My five-year-old daughter and I were just about to leave the supermarket Target when it started to pour rain. We stood behind the glass doors and looked outside. Some shoppers were waiting, either for someone to pick them up or for the rain to stop.
“Do we wait or just get wet ” I asked my daughter.
“Mum, let’s just get wet,” she said.
On our way out, I asked my daughter if she was sure.
“It’s going to be cold,” I said.
“Let’s go,” she answered.
We hurried across the parking lot, with buckets of rainwater dumping on us. I got her into the car, put our bags in the back and sat in the front seat. I turned the heater on, thinking my daughter would complain she was cold. As I drove home, I thought about all the people still at Target.
How often do we let life’s storms keep us from going where we want We think, if we just wait, whatever difficulty we are facing might go away. We thought we might have made the better choice. But when we avoid facing life’s challenges, we miss out on something important.
My daughter was brave to go out into the rain. She took the difficulty as part of the day’s journey. She was willing to take on a challenge to get where she wanted to go. Sometimes in life, you have to get wet.
Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.

B. We should stay outside while it’s raining.
C. We can’t escape from being hurt by the rain.

B. Accept a child’s decision carefully.
C. Be brave to face the challenges in our life.
D. Make a better choice in front of the difficulties.

When did Chinese civilization(文明)start After more than 20 years of research, Chinese researchers have their own answers.
China’s national project to study the origins(起源)of Chinese civilization started in 2002. About 400 researchers across the country have taken part in the project.
According to their findings, Chinese civilization can date back more than 5,000 years based on research done on many of the country’s ruins(废墟), China Daily reported.
For example, Liangzhu site in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, dates back 5,300 years. It is the ruins of a capital-level city. There was a small city inside with an area of nearly 3 million square metres and a larger city outside. People at that time grew rice and used jade(玉)to make valuable things. Erlitou site in Luoyang, Henan Province, dates back 3,750 years. It was probably the capital of the Xia Dynasty(夏朝), the first central dynasty recorded in Chinese history.
The research helps us better understand Chinese civilization, according to Wang Wei, a researcher of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Its development never stopped. Different origins of the civilization were connected with each other and often influenced each other. “They slowly made a shared community,” he said.
Chinese civilization is inclusive as well. Growing wheat which all started in West Asia, was introduced into Zhongyuan, the central part of China more than 4,500 years ago. China then developed its own civilization. China also shared some key cultural traditions, such as the planting of millet(粟), with other parts of the world.
8. What do we know about China’s national project to study the origins of Chinese civilization
A. It started more than 20 years ago.
B. It will continue for the next 20 years.
C. No clear answers or results have been reached yet.
D. About 400 researchers around the world took part in it.
9. Which of the following is TRUE about the Liangzhu site
A. It was the capital of the first central dynasty recorded in Chinese history.
B. It shows that people grew rice there about 5,000 years ago.
C. The city inside was larger than the city outside.
D. Jade wasn’t used by people there.
10. What does the underlined word “inclusive” mean in Chinese
A. 深远的 B. 成熟的 C. 包容的 D. 神秘的
11. What is the best title for the passage
A. How Chinese Civilization Spread
B. The World—A Shared Community
C. Where Chinese Civilization Started
D. Chinese Civilization—A Long and Great History

But one day, my friends gave me a big surprised on my twelfth birthday—they showed up with a kitten named Bandit! My heart was soon filled with great pleasure.
②Sadly, Bandit was the shyest cat I had ever seen. Every time I wanted to play with him, he tried to run away. I didn’t know how to deal with him. Sad and angry, I shouted at him, but that didn’t work! Then I tried a rude way: carrying him to the outside world and just letting him meow(喵喵叫)helplessly. But as a matter of fact, I regretted to tell you that it didn’t work, either.
③However, I found that he loved to stay with my mum. How could the one thing I loved most love my mum more I thought of many reasons: maybe she could speak the language of cats, or she was drawing his attention with a secret treat. I went to talk with her about both, puzzled(困惑的).
④“The answer is simple, dear,” my mum replied, “What I do have is patience!”
⑤So I learned to talk with Bandit and treated him just as a baby like Mum did. Then one day, I was surprised to find Bandit rubbing(磨擦)against my face lovingly! “Wow! I won Bandit’s heart now!” I cheerfully told Mum.
⑥Bandit has helped me to grow into a more patient person and also brought my family closer. Naturally, the topic about this important member never ends!

Dear Tina
I’m sorry to hear that you are in trouble. In my opinion, you needn’t give up playing the guitar. But as a student, schoolwork is also important. You should manage your time well. Here I want to give you some advice. First, make a list of study plan and follow it. Second, play the guitar only on weekends. Third, make good use of your free time. For example, you can spend less time watching TV every night and spend more time studying. I believe you will do better in your next exam.
