Many America ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )n youngsters earn their own allowance by doing temporary jobs for their neighbors. Babysitting is one of the common of these jobs. Most couples do not have maids or relatives living with them, and they need to have someone watch the children if they want to go out.
Another way is by mowing lawn in summer and clearing snow from side-walks and driveways in winter. Many people mow their own lawns, but often people prefer to give the job to a neighbor's child. In winter, snow clearing from streets and highways is the government's responsibility. Homeowners or tenants, however, must clear side-walks and driveways. Since clearing snow is very tiring, many people prefer to hire teenagers for this job rather than do it themselves.
Besides, many American teenagers usually work two to three hours after school and all day on Saturday or Sunday at the local supermarket. They work as cashiers or stockroom clerks. Or they help customers carry things to their cars. Other favorite jobs are waiting on tables in restaurants or working part-time at stores or gas stations.
By earning their own allowance(津贴), teenagers acquire a feeling of independence and a sense of responsibility which prepares them for a productive life in society.2·1·c·n·j·y21·cn·jy·com2-1-c-n-j-y

Deadrick has been ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 ) a stunt coordinator (协调员) for the Nickelodeon channel for 12 years. He has worked with famous actors, directors and producers, and he has traveled all over the world. But that doesn’t mean his work is easy.
It took him years ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 ) of hard work to get where he is today. Deadrick’s father, Vince Deadrick Sr., was also a stuntman, but his family connection didn’t give Deadrick a free pass into the movie business. He learned from his dad how to set up cardboard boxes and fall pads for high falls, and he started training on his own once he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps.21·世纪*教育网2-1-c-n-j-y 21*cnjy*com

Many of the inventions ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 ) that form part of our everyday lives had their roots right here in the UK. Let’s take a look at some of the most important inventions.
The bagless vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器) James Dyson, 1979
There are some t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )hings we don’t know we need until someone invents them. Step forward, the bagless vacuum cleaner. James Dyson came up with the idea after spending a lot of money on an expensive cleaner that simply pushed dirt around.
Most of us w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )ould have left it that, but Dyson went on to change the basic principle of a vacuum cleaner — an idea that hadn’t been challenged for 100 years — by designing a system that removed the necessity of the bag for good. His final version took five years of research.21·cn·jy·com21教育网21教育网21教育网2·1·c·n·j·y
However, when Dyson fi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )rst approached manufacturers (制造商) with his idea, he couldn’t interest them. But he didn’t give up and set up a factory in Wiltshire in 1993 to produce them himself. Two years later, Dyson products were outselling the competition.21教育名师原创作品2·1·c·n·j·y21·世纪*教育网

The London sewage system (污水处理系统) Joseph Bazalgette, 1865
Like any major cit ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )y, London has always produced large amounts of waste. Give thanks, then, to Joseph Bazalgette, an engineer who developed a far-reaching underground sewage system. It changed the process of getting rid of waste by dumping it into the Thames River. Even more impressive was his idea to construct pipes that would function for nearly 150 years and still be large enough to meet the need of an increasing population. As he said, “We’re only going to do this once.”
28. What do we know about James Dyson and his idea
A. His efforts paid off at last.
B. He enjoyed immediate success.
C. His idea attracted many manufacturers.
D. He set up the first vacuum cleaner factory.

The sequence (顺序) that ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 ) we meet matters in how we judge subsequent (后来的) information. The big influence of first impressions is related to the halo effect, where the perception (看法) of positive qualities in one thing or part gives rise to the perception of similar qualities in related things or in the whole.
Here is an ex ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )ample: You meet a friendly person at a party and later are asked to collect money for a worthy cause. You call that person because you think she will make a contribution. In reality, there is no connection between being pleasant and being generous. Yet the halo effect leads you to think that the two are related.
The halo effect is p ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )owerful, but it is questionable whether it matters much in long-term relationships, such as that between teacher and student. While dressing up may make students think the teacher must know his subject matter because he creates a professional first impression, the effect wears thin if the person turns out to be a poor teacher after all.
First impression ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )s matter but they don’t have the final word. Facts speak louder. If you had never seen or heard of Einstein, the first time you saw him your impression would most likely be negative. Now his face is connected with genius, not madness because he is the person who has come to define what genius is.
The problem is ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 ) that few of us are Einsteins and we often don’t get the chance to change a negative first impression.【版权所有:21教育】21·世纪*教育网

Play the tape for the students.
T: So much for listeni ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )ng. Let’s underline some important sentences and phrases.
Task 4 Explanation
Show the following on ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )the screen. These sentences or phrases may be difficult for the students to understand.
1. ... many roads are in bad condition and accidents are frequent.
2. a sheer drop
3. ... on average one vehicle comes off the road every two weeks.
4. But thanks to one man, the death toll has fallen.21*cnjy*com
5. But often they ju ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )st pass by, taking the human traffic signal for granted.
6. He had a close encounter with death.
First ask the students ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 ) to guess the meanings of the sentences and phrases using the context. Then explain them to the students.
1. ... on one side ar ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )e the high mountains and on the other side is a steep drop, and there are many bends on the roads. So the roads are very dangerous and accidents often happen.
2. “A sheer drop” means “a steep slope of a mountain”.
3. According ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )to the average, the accidents often happen, about two weeks a time.
4. Because Timoteo Apa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )za directs the traffic every day, the accidents don’t happen so often. He saved a lot of people’s lives.
5. Most of the dri ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )vers just drive their cars away from him, as if they didn’t take notice of him, or they think they have nothing to do with him.
6. An accident almost killed him.
Step IV Discussion
The discussion is desi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )gned to help the students understand the text further and build up a correct concept of life value. Make them form a right attitude towards work and society. 21·cn·jy·comwww.21-cn-jy.com
T: Well, boys and girl ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )s. I don’t know whether you are moved or not. Timoteo Apaza is a volunteer. He does the job without any pay. What do you think of his job Is it a job worth doing I will give you five minutes to discuss the question. Then give me your opinions.
Five minutes for discussion.
T: Time is up. Which pair wants to have a try
Ask a pair to present their opinions.
S1: I really can’t un ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )derstand why he chooses the job, for he can’t make any money from it. I think it is not a job worth doing.
S2: That is beca ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )use he once had a close encounter with death. He knows the values of life. So he wants to save the others’ lives. He thinks it is his mission and a job worth doing.
S1: But don’t yo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )u think it unnecessary for him to do that Isn’t there any practical and modern way to solve the problem For example, he can make electrical lights, using red and green lights.21·世纪*教育网
S2: Maybe there i ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )s much difficulty for him to solve the problem in that way. But he is the only person who has done something for this and he has saved a lot of people. In my opinion, he is a person who deserves our respect. He sacrifices a lot for others’ happiness. We should learn the spirit from him.
S1: Oh, I see. I can’t agree with you more.
T: I am glad that yo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )u two have learnt something from him. You did a good job. Please sit down.
Step V Text Analysis
T: Now read th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )rough the text again and summarize the writing characteristics of it.
A sample version:
The writer uses an u ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )nusual title “The Human Traffic Signal” to attract the readers’ attention and arouse their interest. Then the text tells us the bad condition of many roads in La Paz. Afterwards, it tells us why the death toll has fallen — because of the human traffic signal (Timoteo Apaza). At last it tells us why he chooses the job. After reading it, we are easily moved.21*cnjy*com
T: What is the main idea of the text
S1: Let me try. Both ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 ) life and communication are difficult in La Paz. Accidents often happen on some dangerous roads. Timoteo Apaza, a volunteer, who had an accident and had a close encounter with death, realized that it is necessary to direct the traffic. Because of him, the death toll has fallen. He is an ordinary as well as great man.
T: Then who can tell us the writing purpose of this text?21世纪教育网版权所有
S2: By describing ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )the special job of Timoteo Apaza, the author wants to show us that the value of a job is not money. Instead, it lies in the happiness of serving society. We should form right attitudes towards work and society. 【来源:21cnj*y.co*m】
Step VI Homework
T: Today we have lear ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )nt some words about job and a passage about a person. From the text we know that Timoteo Apaza is an ordinary person, and he does an ordinary job, but he has a noble mind. He devotes himself to saving others’ lives. We can say he is greatly respectable. From this story, we know we can make great contributions to society even we do ordinary jobs. If everyone of us has this spirit, the future will become better. T: We have reviewed t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )he different past tenses, but how to use them correctly is a problem. You should pay attention to them when using them. Let’s come to FUNCTION.
Step III Function
This part is ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )to help the students make different deductions about the past using different modal verbs.
Show the followin ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )g on the screen and get the students to learn the different usages of these modal verbs.
“must + have do ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )ne sth.” is used to show that the speaker is certain about something happened.
e.g. Since the di ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )tch is full of water, it must have rained last night.
“can’t + have done sth ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 ).” is also used to show that the speaker is certain about something happened, but in a negative way.21世纪教育网版权所有
e.g. You can’ ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )t have met my grandmother. She died before you were born.
“may / might + have ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 ) done sth.” is used to express possibility. But “may” expresses stronger possibility while “might” expresses weaker possibility.
e.g. I can’t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )find my keys. I may / might have left them at the school yesterday.
T: OK, complete t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )he sentences in Exercise 1 and then answer the two questions.

2. He must have had a tight schedule.
3. He might have been delayed by traffic jam.
Step IV Vocabulary
T: In the first peri ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )od, we have learnt some words about job. In this period, we will learn more words about job. Now do Exercises 1-2. You can look the words up in your dictionary if you don’t know their meanings.
Five minutes later, check the answers together.
T: Look at the tw ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )o groups of words in Exercise 3. When we put a word from Group a and another from Group b together, we can get a new word. For example, when we put “data” and “analyst” together, we get the word “data analyst” which means “项目分析师” in Chinese. Match the proper words from the two groups and see how many jobs we can get.
After the student ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )s finish matching, check if they put the right words together.
T: OK. Make sure they ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )make sense when they are put together. In this way, your vocabulary will be enlarged. Now, match the questions in Exercise 4 with the jobs you get in Exercise 3. Then work in pairs, ask and answer the questions.

In your lette ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com" \o "欢迎登陆21世纪教育网 )r of application, aim to say just enough to introduce yourself. If you are answering an advertisement, any information for what it asks must, of course, be given. This will usually cover your school record, further education and training. Your purpose is to bring to the notice of the boss any good reason why you rather than any of the other applicants (申请人) should be chosen for the job. If therefore you feel you have any special skill for the work or, for example, any particular interest in the line of business, let this be known. 21*cnjy*com
