the usage of can
1. 情态动词有一定的意义, 但无人称和数的形式上的变化; 其后通常接不带 to 的动词不定式,表示说话人的语气和情态。
其否定式的构成:情态动词+not (cannot = can’t)。
2. 情态动词can的用法
(1) (表示有能力做或能够发生)能,会。
e.g. I can run fast. 我能跑得快。

(2) 表示客观可能性,意为 “可以,可能”。
e.g. The stadium can be emptied in four minutes.
这个体育场能在四分钟以内让观众全部散场。
Temperature can reach 39 degree ℃ in the summer here.
这儿夏天的气温能达到39摄氏度。
(3) 表示允许,意为“可以”。
e.g. You can take the car, if you want.
如果想用那辆车,你就尽管用吧。
We can’t wear jeans at work. 我们工作时不准穿牛仔裤。

(4) (表示疑惑或惊讶)究竟能,难道会,到底是。
e.g. Can he be serious
他难道会当真么?

3. can是情态动词,没有人称和数的变化。如果要询问某人能否做某事,需要将can放至句首。
e.g. — Can you speak Chinese
— 你会说汉语吗?
— Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.
— 是的,我会。/不,我不会。
— Can she swim
— 她会游泳吗?
— Yes, she can. / No, she can’t.
— 是的,她会。/不,她不会。
1. Work in pairs. Add two or three more activities to the list.
Talk about other activities in pairs and add them to your lists.
Practise in pairs by asking about the activities on your lists.
