An obstacle usually refers to a difficulty or problem that prevents you from achieving something. Whether it was in your past, or you’re presently facing an obstacle, you have to resolve it. Some people avoid obstacles or deny their existence. Others let obstacles control them, and they feel defeated. Your attitude towards obstacles will define the outcome of whether you rise from the challenge, or remain stuck in it. Here are some more great things to love about obstacles.
First, obstacles give you purposes. Sometimes obstacles can reset your goals. You might have always had a particular way of doing things, or wanted to pursue certain goals; but when you’re faced with setbacks or difficulties, you’re forced to re-think, and re-examine your path. You may end up focusing on something new and exciting. Or, you may concentrate on something that you otherwise wouldn’t have if not for the particular setback. By having to overcome an obstacle, you’ll be fulfilling a purpose, rather than just going through the motions. Second, obstacles prepare you for the unexpected. Obstacles serve as guides for where to go next. Even though obstacles can bring out many negative emotions in us, such as frustration, anger, or sadness, it’s important to realize that they don’t stop you from reaching your intended goals. Instead, they, in a way, give you time to stop and think if perhaps there is a new and better path to take and what you can prepare for what will happen along the way. Obstacles shift your perspective.
Obstacles whether you like them or not are unavoidable. Life will never stop throwing you new obstacles. So, the best thing to do is know how to better see and address these obstacles, and transform them into opportunities for self-improvement. The more you’re able to see obstacles as being an advantage to your life, the better you’ll be at managing them.
Accepting obstacles will be rewarding. It will make you constantly change and adapt to new situations, allowing you to grow into a better version of yourself.
24.What does the word “obstacle” in the passage probably mean
A.passion. B.adversity.
C.reputation. D.expedition.
25.What determines the outcome of obstacles you face
A.Your own attitude. B.Your quick adaptation.
C.Your adequate preparation. D.Your optimistic perseverance.
26.How would obstacles result in benefits
A.They prevent your negative emotions.
B.They give you advantages over others.
C.They make you think quickly and critically.
D.They allow you to view things from new angles.
27.What’s the main idea of the passage
A.Avoiding obstacles does harm to life. B.Loving obstacles benefits a lot.
C.Obstacles are actually unavoidable. D.Obstacles are double-edged swords.

Students who date (约会) in middle school have significantly worse study skills, are four times more likely to drop out of school and report twice as much alcohol and tobacco use than their single classmates, according to new research from the University of Georgia.
“Romantic relationships are a symbol of adolescence(青春期), but very few studies have examined how adolescents are different in the development of these relationships.” said Pamela Orpinas, study author and professor in the College of Public Health.
Orpinas followed a group of 624 students over a seven-year period from 6th to 12th grade. Each year, the group of students completed a survey indicating whether they had dated and reported the frequency of different behaviors, including the use of drugs and alcohol. Their teachers completed questionnaires (调查表) about the students' academic efforts. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school.
“At all points in time, teachers rated the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skills,” according to the journal article. Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to academic success such as doing work for extra credit, being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters.
“Dating a classmate may have the same emotional complications of dating a co-worker,” Orpinas said, “When the couple break up, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the ex-partner dating someone else. It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression and divert (转移) attention from studying.”
“Dating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school.”Orpinas concluded.
32.According to the passage, students who date in middle school may_____.
A.have poorer academic performances
B.be more likely to hurt others
C.enjoy better school lives
D.are less likely to use alcohol and tobacco
33.When doing his study, Orpinas _____.
A.followed a group of students of 6th and 12th grade
B.found that the students' study skills have connection with their frequency of dating
C.completed questionnaires about the students' academic efforts
D.completed a survey and a report each year
34.What can possibly happen to the school couples after they break up
A.They will miss their ex-partners sometimes.
B.They don't want to see each other any longer.
C.Their attention to studying will be affected.
D.They will think it's reasonable to get depressed.
35.Orpinas’ attitude towards dating in middle school is _____.
A.supportive B.negative
C.indifferent D.positive

We met at the Leeds Grenville SPCA.We were here to find the best fit for our little family of three. In my heart, however, I think I already knew which one was the right cat. Portia, a quiet brown tabby (斑猫), watched us with partially closed eyes, seemingly saying, “Take your time…” and I know it’s going to be me. As I neared her cage, one paw extended. Finally we decided to bring home a cat that day.
After a day or two of settling in, Portia became a sort of small and furry nanny to my kids. She would travel from room to room with us during the day, usually staying closest to my son. She wanted to sit where he sat, look out the windows from which he peered, and make courageous attempts to share whatever he was eating. At night, she would sprawl onto his lap during story time. We nicknamed her “Guardian Kitten” for the way she always wanted to be where he was, watching over him as if he were her own.
One day, I was gathering leaves while my child delighted in disturbing the piles. Portia was dozing on the porch, her cars sometimes shifting toward the sound of our voices. Then suddenly, from down the street, a desperate voice cried, “No! Come back here!” The phrase was repeated and the volume increased as the speaker drew closer. A Golden Retriever ignored his owner and reached my property first. In a split second it leaped over the low fence surrounding the front yard.
The dog rushed toward my son with boundless energy and body language that expressed that it wanted to play. “Puppy!” my son exclaimed, spreading his arms apart in a welcoming gesture. Unlike me, he was not aware that this dog would, at the very least, knock him down with its uncontained enthusiasm. And I wasn’t going to be able to close the space between us in time.

67.One possible version:
When I was wondering how to protect my son, a scream erupted behind me. It was from Portia. She flew from the porch in a blur of brown and black stripes, landing between the dog and pared to the fully grown dog, Portia was tiny, but her outrage compensated for that. Every hair on her body was raised. Her back was arched and sharp teeth were revealed. She screamed again, claws extended as one paw exploded outward and struck the dog’s nose. She took a step back. Once more she closed the gap, claws ready to slice. The dog was a bit frightened and retreated. Hissing and striking, she successfully drove the Retriever out of the yard.
After a while the owner arrived, out of breath. Seeing my son was safe and sound, he was relieved. A bit embarrassed, he apologized to me earnestly while taking hold of his pet’s collar before returning home. Portia watched with dismissive eyes until they rounded the corner and disappeared. I stroked her with affection and gratitude for her heroic act. She was definitely a good guardian and beyond compare. Also, her certainty toward us and the way she became a part of our family encouraged me to feel as if there was a kind of destiny to this encounter.
