A few years ago, a doctor gave a wrong prescription to a 9-year-old boy because he had accidentally clicked the next medicine listed in the drop-down menu. Unfortunately, the boy died.
Dr. Gidi Stein heard the story and felt forced to do something. “It was like killing someone with a spelling error. He just clicked on the wrong button…Stein said. “One would have thought there’d be some kind of spell-checker to prevent these terrible things from happening. But apparently this is not the case.”
Several things were immediately obvious to the 54-year-old Stein, who had previously studied computer science. “If you look at this problem from a bird’s eye view, there were so many places down the line where this decision could have been stopped-from the physician to the pharmacy (药房) even to the mother. All of them had all the relevant information to have the judgment that this was just the wrong drug for the wrong patient. For Stein, it represented a systematic failure.
Stein compared this with credit cards. “If you use your credit card in the daily routine over time, a pattern emerges of how we use our cards : the grocery store, the gas station in our local town. If your credit card would appear tomorrow in Zimbabwe, it would be unusual. The credit card company would call you and say, “‘Hey, was that you ’”
But nothing like that existed in the field of prescription drugs. So Stein set up a company called MedAware. He came up with a machine learning outliner detection system. In other words, he trained the computers to realize if a doctor accidentally prescribed the wrong medicine.
The system is already used in hospitals and doctor5 s offices. To date, MedAware has used their technology to help nearly six million patients in the United States and Israel.
24.What caused the boy’s death
A.The doctor’s carelessness. B.The doctor’s poor medical skill.
C.The failure of the computer. D.The incomplete health care system.
25.How did Dr. Gidi Stein react to the boy’s death
A.He was annoyed and put the blame on the doctor only.
B.He was regretful and tried to prevent similar accidents happening.
C.He was embarrassed and mistook it as a systematic failure.
D.He was confused and detected the mistakes in prescriptions himself.
26.What does Stein want to tell us by mentioning credit cards
A.Credit cards are available for doctors’ prescriptions.
B.Instructions in using credit cards are offered to users.
C.The boy might have been saved with the technology like credit cards.
D.MedAware’s technology will benefit the patients in Zimbabwe.
27.It can be concluded from the text that ________.
A.MedAware’s technology helps doctors choose right medicine
B.MedAware’s technology checks the prescriptions doctors make out
C.Medical industry worldwide has enjoyed MedAware’s technology
D.The boy s mother was not to blame for his death during the accident
With fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes for the recycling of waste. The word “rubbish” could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else.
The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.
Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars (金属条) which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that founders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally, the rubbish will pass under magnets (磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage.
The first full-scale giant recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps (垃圾场), some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.
28.What is NOT mentioned as a part of the recycling process described in Paragraph 3
A.Sharpening metal bars.
B.Sorting out small pieces of metal.
C.Breaking up whatever is breakable.
D.Separating light elements from the heavy ones.
29.Why will big cities have to build their own recycling plants
A.To protect the environment. B.To reduce transportation expense.
C.To get raw materials locally. D.To get big profits from those plants.
30.What can we know from the passage
A.Dangerous wastes can’t be recycled.
B.Recycling plant only recycle metal and paper.
C.Rubbish will be dealt with in a better way later.
D.The first full-scale giant recycling plants will begin operation in less than 15 years.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.Scientific Ways to Get Energy B.The Location of Recycling Plants
C.Some Methods to Protect the Environment D.New Ways of Recycling Wastes
In September 2022, Artemis Technologies company presented a new type of water ferry(渡船). The Artemis E-24 is the world’s first high-speed, electric, zero-emissions ferry. Currently, the only way to get from Belfast, Northern Ireland to Bangor, Wales without gelling on a plane, is to take a bus or train to Dublin. Ireland and to get on a ferry there. However, that could all change with Artemis E-24 to be applied literally.
The first Artemis E-24 is expected to set sail on a route between Belfast and Bangor as early as 2024. But actually the road to its creation began nearly 20 years ago, in 2005, when Olympic medalist, Dr. Iain Percy, joined the Artemis Racing sailing team. The Artemis ferry used the same hydrofoil(水翼船)technology that the Artemis Racing America’s Cup racing yachts did. It is this technology that can lift the boat out of the water as it picks up speed, much like an airplane’s wings, that make it seem as if it is flying.
Beyond the coolness factor, the reasons why Artemis E-24 uses the hydrofoil technology are practical. Raising the boat above the water, and reducing drug leads to up to a 85 percent reduction in fuel costs. Likewise, the reduced drag also minimizes the impact that running the ship has on shorelines. Reduced drag means lower waves.
The environmental benefit of a transportation technology is obvious to all. However, it also has practical benefits. As Dr. Percy told The Irish World, “this ferry will not only be the cheapest, but also the fastest way in water-based cities. It will get commuters(通勤者)to where they are going in 25 minutes. In addition, this new initiative will also bring more than 1, 000 new jobs into the Belfast area over the next few years. ”
The Artemis Ferry is a proof to the fact that new and creative technologies can make huge impacts, not only for the world and the environment, but for the local economics that produce them.
32.Why is the route from Belfast to Bangor mentioned in paragraph 1
A.To analyse the new ferry.
B.To make a list of evidence.
C.To come up with an idea.
D.To add the background of the topic.
33.What does the paragraph 2 mainly show
A.The shape of the Artemis E-24
B.The origin of the new invention.
C.The experiences of an Olympic medalist.
D.The effect of the hydrofoil technology.
34.How can we describe the Artemis E-24
A.It is light and energy-efficient.
B.It is cheap and fully automatic.
C.It is high-speed and cost-effective.
D.It is oil-burning and multifunctional.
35.Whal is the best title of the text
A.New Flying Ferry Could Revolutionize Water Travel
B.New Technology Balances Economy and Environment
C.The Artemis Ferry with Airplane’s Wings Will Set Sail
D.Hydrofoil Technology Leads to Reduction in Fuel Costs

Different sports filled my days in my youth. I dreamed or a big win some day, with a big trophy (奖杯). I was skillful and fast, or so I thought. However, I soon learned my skills seemed quite weak because the bigger, stronger boys seemed to occupy every corner of the playground. Once I was in the 100-yard hurdles, the only recognition I received for my performance was two bloody knees.
In college, I took a swim competition, dreaming of the glory! It turned out I achieved nothing. As an older adult, I still maintained an active lifestyle. In 2010 I signed up for a stair-climbing challenge to raise money for fighting against lung cancer. My father had died of the same disease, so this was a meaningful cause for me. Then, in 2019,the organization offered an even more challenging climb option: the vertical (垂直的) mile. So I would have three hours to climb up and down twenty-eight floors fifteen times, plus three more.
I trained hard. When the challenge started. I felt confident. But soon my legs started feeling heavy. What was worse, I began experiencing leg cramps (抽筋). My progress slowed dramatically and I quickly fell behind. When came down after finishing lap 14, it was past the time limit, so my big win had escaped once again.
Soon after the climb, I struggled to experience the sense of self-satisfaction. And I had, after all, set a goal for myself to prove what I was made of, what I had inside me. And what I had inside me was, “Nice try, but you didn’t make it.” So, a year later, at age 62 and after numerous workouts, I was back. Like last year, I was well ahead after an hour and I again started feeling some discomfort in my legs. I heard myself cry out loud, “Oh, no not again!” I finally stopped and sat down on the stairs, feeling quite depressed and wondering if my dream was over. A few climbers stopped to offer help. I was touched, but embarrassed to accept. Except for one climber. An angel climber, really.
Jessica, who I happened to know, was a salesman’s friend when I bought new running shoes at his store. And without that connection, she might have climbed past me as I sat on those steps, my legs shaking. But all those things did happen, and Jessica stopped to help.

M: We need to decide exactly when we’re going to move. Any suggestions
W: I think July would be the best time. Our sales are always down that month. We could move all the office equipment at a weekend, do everything at once.
M: I think a weekend is too short. Maybe we should do it department by department.
W: What do you mean
M: Well, each week, a different department would move. That way, there would always be people here to handle customer inquiries, phone calls, and so on.
W: Emm, that’s a good idea.

W: How do you feel about meeting Sarah’s parents
M: I’m worried about making a bad impression. I find it difficult to get along with people straight away.

W: What are you most nervous about
M: Well, I gave up studying to become a DJ, and I don’t think Sarah’s parents will be satisfied with that. Also, I changed my hair style last week, and they’ll probably be shocked by that.
W: How are you going to try and make a good impression
M: Well, I’m going to wear smart clothes. And I’ll take her mom some flowers.

It was the first time for both of us to travel by air. We sat near the window of the plane and enjoyed an unusual and beautiful view of the world. We went there because the cost was lower. We stayed at a hotel on the beach. We slept late every morning and then had breakfast outdoors near the pool. When the weather was not too hot, we went sightseeing in the morning. In the afternoon, we would go swimming in the ocean, lie in the sun, or go water-skiing. After dinner in the evening, we usually went dancing or enjoyed ourselves in the nightclubs. The two weeks went by (流逝) too quickly. We were both very sorry when we had to leave.

W: Yeah. I was surprised to get one. Climbing was awful — I couldn’t reach the top of the wall.
My team was the best at the walking, though. We were left in a place and had to find our way back. We were first because luckily I could read the map.
M: That’s great! What about the sailing Did you have a good time going sailing
W: Yeah. I really enjoyed the sailing, even though I wasn’t very good at it.

A few years ago, a doctor gave a wrong prescription to a 9-year-old boy because he had accidentally clicked the next medicine listed in the drop-down menu. Unfortunately, the boy died. 故选A。
根据第二段中“It was like killing someone with a spelling error. He just clicked on the wrong button…Stein said. “One would have thought there’d be some kind of spell-checker to prevent these terrible things from happening. But apparently this is not the case.”可知“这就像杀了一个拼写错误的人。他只是点错了按钮……Stein说。“人们会认为会有某种拼写检查程序来防止这些可怕的事情发生。但显然情况并非如此。”由此可推知Dr. Gidi Stein对男孩的死很遗憾,结合后文Stein开发识别处方错误的软件可知,Stein试图阻止类似的事故发生。故选B。
26.推理判断题。根据第四段中If your credit card would appear tomorrow in Zimbabwe, it would be unusual. The credit card company would call you and say, “‘Hey, was that you ’”可知如果你的信用卡明天出现在津巴布韦,这将是不寻常的。
In other words, he trained the computers to realize if a doctor accidentally prescribed the wrong medicine.

根据第三段关键句“First, it will pass through sharp metal bars (金属条) which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed”可知,首先,垃圾会穿过锋利的金属条,这些金属条会撕开通常用来装垃圾的塑料袋。 故选A项。
根据最后一段关键句“Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps (垃圾场), some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.”
根据第一段关键句“The word “rubbish” could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dumps would be made into something useful.”
结合文章内容及第一段关键句“The word “rubbish” could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dumps would be made into something useful.”

根据第一段中“he Artemis E-24 is the world’s first high-speed, electric, zero-emissions ferry. Currently, the only way to get from Belfast, Northern Ireland to Bangor, Wales without gelling on a plane, is to take a bus or train to Dublin. Ireland and to get on a ferry there. However, that could all change with Artemis E-24 to be applied literally.”(Artemis E-24是世界上第一艘高速、电动、零排放的渡轮。
根据第二段“The first Artemis E-24 is expected to set sail on a route between Belfast and Bangor as early as 2024. But actually the road to its creation began nearly 20 years ago, in 2005, when Olympic medalist, Dr. Iain Percy, joined the Artemis Racing sailing team. The Artemis ferry used the same hydrofoil technology that the Artemis Racing America’s Cup racing yachts did. It is this technology that can lift the boat out of the water as it picks up speed, much like an airplane’s wings, that make it seem as if it is flying.”(第一艘Artemis E-24预计最早于2024年在贝尔法斯特和班戈之间的航线上起航。
根据倒数第二段中“As Dr. Percy told The Irish World, this ferry will not only be the cheapest, but also the fastest way in water-based cities. It will get commuters to where they are going in 25 minutes.”(正如珀西博士在接受《爱尔兰世界报》采访时所说,“这艘渡轮不仅是水基城市中最便宜的,也是最快的方式。它可以让通勤者在25分钟内到达他们要去的地方。)可知,Artemis E-24速度快,性价比高。故选C项。
35.主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段中“In September 2022, Artemis Technologies company presented a new type of water ferry. The Artemis E-24 is the world’s first high-speed, electric, zero-emissions ferry.”(2022年9月,Artemis Technologies公司推出了一种新型水上轮渡。 以及第二段中“The first Artemis E-24 is expected to set sail on a route between Belfast and Bangor as early as 2024.”(第一艘Artemis E-24预计最早于2024年在贝尔法斯特和班戈之间的航线上起航。)和“The Artemis ferry used the same hydrofoil technology that the Artemis Racing America’s Cup racing yachts did. It is this technology that can lift the boat out of the water as it picks up speed, much like an airplane’s wings, that make it seem as if it is flying.”(Artemis轮渡使用了与Artemis美洲杯帆船赛相同的水翼技术。

Dear Xiao Wang,
I have received your letter, in which you mention that you want to lose weight by dieting.
It is natural for young girls at your age to hope to look beautiful. However, in my opinion, health is more important than beauty. As a student, you should put your study in the first place and not let others’ opinions affect your normal life. Keep in mind that it is a person’s inner qualities that really count. However, if you do want to lose weight, you are supposed to use scientific methods. What matters most is that you ought to keep a healthy state of mind and stay confident.
I hope my advice will be helpful to you and I’m looking forward to your next letter.
Yours,
Li Hua
