The weather forecast tells what the temperature and air conditions will be in the near future. 4 The weather can be sunny or stormy. It can be warm or cool. It also can be rainy, cloudy or windy. Sometimes, weather is terrible. A snowstorm or a thunderstorm may happen quickly. When we get information ahead of time, 5
A meteorologist(气象学家) is a person whose job is to forecast the weather. 6 A tool for getting a correct measurement of the temperature is a thermometer. A high temperature probably means plenty of sunshine for everyone.
In rainy weather, a meteorologist uses a rain gauge. A rain gauge gives data about how much rain is falling outdoors. After it rains, you may be able to see a rainbow. A rainbow comes up when the sun comes out and there is still rain in the air.
Wind brings us our weather. It blows clouds from one place to another. 7 A wind vane(风向标) provides this information. Knowing the wind direction helps a meteorologist know what weather is coming.

Bottled water first appeared in the United States in the 1760s. It was said that the water could be good for bodies. Since then, bottled water has become more and more popular all over the world.

However, research (研究) suggests such worries are unnecessary. For most families, bottled water is not better than tap water. In fact, almost half of all bottled water comes from the tap. And when it comes to taste, most of us can’t tell the difference.
However, making bottled water needs a lot of resources. Bottles are usually used only once. Besides, more water goes into the making of a bottle of water. One study found that on average (平均而言), 1.39 liters (升) of water is used to make one liter of bottled water.

Bright red in color, with wonderful sweet-and-sour taste, Tanghulu is a popular traditional snack in most parts of China. In the past, people mainly used the hawthorn (山楂) to make Tanghulu. But now, people like to use other fruits like oranges, bananas, grapes and strawberries. To make Tanghulu, you can follow these steps:
STEP ONE: Start off by washing the hawthorns or any other fruit you choose. Once done, dry the fruit. Put the fruit on bamboo sticks (竹签).
STEP TWO: Add water and white sugar in a pan and then mix them well. Heat the pan until bubbles (气泡) appear and color changes. When doing this, you can test the temperature of the mixture by putting a spoon of the mixture in cold water. It is the key to making wonderful Tanghulu.
STEP THREE: Now, put each fruit stick into the sugar mixture to easily coat the fruit. Remember to turn it to coat all of the sides. Once done, place each stick on a plate. Remember to leave enough space between each other to stop them from sticking. After a few minutes, you can taste them.

Like humans, sometimes animals also need to communicate (沟通) with each other. They communicate to tell each other where food is or to show how they feel. In fact, there are many ways for animals to do that.
The first and most usual way is by using sound. For example, if the monkey sees a snake, it’ll give an alarm call for all the other monkeys to climb onto the trees. It means they’re in danger. Another example is the dolphin (海豚). Each dolphin has a special whistle (口哨声). This is similar to calling someone by his or her name. Scientists even think dolphins will whistle to talk to each other about a situation or the day’s events.
A second way animals communicate is through body language. For example, a pet dog will keep moving its tail when it is happy or excited. A scared cat will stand with its back high. Bees dance in patterns to tell other bees where and how far food is.
Another kind of animal communication is touch. For example, giraffes will wrap their necks together if they like each other. Horses touch their noses together as a sign that they are comfortable with another horse. Some monkeys will touch their hands together to say “Hello”.
Next time you may watch carefully how two animals are communicating with each other when you meet them. It must be great fun.

The temperature has dropped to 30 degrees below zero. But that doesn’t stop the fishermen of Songyuan City in Jilin Province. Each morning, they get up early and rush to Chagan Lake with a group of horses. The fishermen use the horses to help pull fishing nets out of the frozen (结冰的) lake.
For centuries, those living around Chagan Lake have kept alive the tradition of ice fishing. They dig holes through the thick ice and use a huge net to catch winter fish in the freezing waters. This special method has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产).
Every year in December, there is a winter fishing festival, which marks the beginning of the winter fishing season. Over 20 activities are held during the festival, such as winter sports competitions, nature watching, and the selling of the first-caught fish.
None of the tourists at this year’s festival would ever imagine that Chagan Lake used to be only tens of square kilometers in size. In the past, there was little rainfall and the lake grew smaller over time. Also, overfishing is one of the main reasons.
To bring Chagan Lake’s beauty back, the government used a lot of different methods. They brought in water from the Songhua River, grew more plants, and kept the water clean. The lake now covers about 500 square kilometers, and fish numbers have returned to a normal level. Now, an increasing number of tourists flock to the lake each year to experience the ancient ice-fishing tradition.

“What! You, too I thought I was the only one.” Have you ever said this to someone If so, you may have ended up becoming friends with this person.
It seems that similarity often helps form friendships. The Greek philosopher (哲学家) Aristotle once said, “Some define (下定义) ‘friendship’ as a matter of similarity (相似性); they say that we love those who are like ourselves.”
Now, there is some science behind this idea. Scientists from University of California said friends have similar brains, Scientific American reported.
The scientists invited 42 university students to take part in an experiment. Each student watched the same set of videos, which included a comedy, a debate (讨论) and a soccer match. Meanwhile, scientists scanned (扫描) their brains and recorded their brain activity. According to their scans, friends who watched the same video clips reacted in similar ways. Similar parts of their brains lit up while watching the videos. However, people who weren’t friends had different reactions to the same video.
But brain similarity is not the only thing that can result in friendship. Scientists also found that friendship is also based on how close you are to someone. They did an experiment with students who met in class for the first time. In this experiment, students who sat in neighboring scats were more likely to become friends.
39.What does “this idea” in Paragraph 3 refer to
