1.Can people prevent certain accidents 人们能阻止某些事故吗？
(1) prevent〔及物动词〕阻止；防止
prevent ...(from) doing sth. = stop ...(from) doing sth.
阻止……做某事
We must do something to prevent fires.
我们必须做点儿事来预防火灾。
The heavy rain stopped soldiers (from) moving on.
大雨阻止了士兵们继续前进。
(2) certain 〔形容词〕
① 某些；某个
常在名词前作定语。
The library is only open at certain times of day.
这座图书馆只在一天的某些时段开放。
②确定；无疑; 确信
不在名词前作定语。
be certain of/about...对……确定
be certain that...确信……
Are you certain about/of that 你肯定是那样吗？
I’m certain that I left the keys in the kitchen.
我确定把钥匙落在厨房里了。
2. Many people hurt themselves by falling off chairs.
很多人从椅子上掉下来伤着自己。
fall off
①从 ……上掉下来（=fall down from...）
Be careful, or you’ll fall off the tree.
当心，否则你会从树上掉下来。
②掉落；跌落（=fall down）
Danny fell off and hurt himself.
丹尼掉下来了，并伤着了自己。
【拓展】fall的常考短语还有：
fall over 跌倒
fall asleep 入睡；睡着
fall in love with... 爱上……
3. Don’t use water to put out kitchen fires.
不要用水来扑灭厨房里的火。
put out 扑灭；熄灭
该短语为“动词+副词”结构，代词作其宾语时，应位于put和out之间；
名词作其宾语时，可位于两词之间也可位于out之后。
Fire is dangerous. Please put it out.
火是危险的，请熄灭它。

put on穿上；上演 put away 收起来，收拾
put down 放下；写下 put in 放进
put off 推迟；延期 put back 放回
put up举起；张贴；竖起；搭建

（1）scissors〔名词〕剪刀
在英语中，由两部分构成的物体常以复数形式存在， 通常用a pair of来说明其数量。
Look！Five pairs of scissors are on the table.
看！桌子上有五把剪刀。
（2）knife 〔名词〕刀。其复数形式为knives。
a knife一把刀
five knives 五把刀
【拓展】英语中，常见的以f/fe结尾，变复数时要把f/fe变为v再加-es的单词还有：
half（半） leave（树叶） self（自己）
wife（妻子） shelf（架子） wolf（狼）
thief（小偷） life（生命）
【助记】巧记复数形式需把f/fe变为v再加-es的单词
树叶半数自己黄，妻子拿刀去割粮；
架后窜出一匹狼，就像小偷逃命忙。
