寓言故事是含有讽喻或明显教训意义的故事，是文学体裁的一种。它的结构简短，多用借喻手法，使富有教训意义的主题或深刻的道理在简单的故事中体现。

1. Read the lesson and answer the questions.
1．What happened to the woodcutter when he was cutting wood beside a lake
He lost his axe in the water.
2．Who appeared as the woodcutter cried
A spirit.
3．How did the woodcutter get back his old axe
The spirit dove into the water and brought it back.
4．Why did the spirit give the woodcutter the other two axes as presents？
Because the woodcutter is honest.

1. spirit
【用法】作可数名词，意为“精灵”，复数形式是spirits。
e.g. They all call her the little spirit.
他们都把她叫做小精灵。
【用法】作不可数名词，意为“精神”。
e.g. We should learn this spirit in our work.
我们应该在工作中学习这种精神。
2. She listened to the woodcutter and felt sorry for him.
她听了伐木人的话，对他感到很抱歉。
句式feel sorry for意为“对……感到抱歉、遗憾、后悔”，后加名词、代词、动名词作介词for的宾语。
e.g.
①She felt really sorry for that matter. 她对那件事情感到很后悔。
②We felt sorry for what we had done. 我们对我们所做的事情感到抱歉。
3. The man looked at the gold axe, knowing it wasn’t his.
那个人看了看这把金斧子，他知道这不是他的。
句中的knowing it wasn’t his是现在分词短语作状语，表示伴随状况。
e.g. Mr. Zhang walked into the classroom, holding two books in his hand.
张先生手里拿着两本书走进了教室。
Note 1:make/earn one’s living 谋生
In order to survive, he has to make his living by selling vegetables.
为了生存，他必须以卖蔬菜为生。
He had to make his own living when he was ten years old.
当他十岁的时候，他不得不靠自己谋生。
Note 2:dive into 投入；潜入
bring back 带回；还回；使记起
I saw a rabbit dive into the hole.
All library books must be brought back before June 30.
Note 3 :admit to “向某人承认”
The student admitted his mistakes to his teacher.
那个学生向老师承认了错误。
He admitted to me that he was wrong.
那个学生向老师承认了错误。
