Part 1Mum, Dad, Brian and I put all the Christmas presents under the tree and then helped prepare the Christmas dinner for the next day. We were all so happy and excited that it took me a long time to get to sleep.I’d only been asleep for about an hour when I was woken up by a very loud noise. I felt a little confused. A moment later, Mum and Dad flew into the room. Mum was carrying my little brother in her arms. Dad shouted at me but I couldn’t hear what he was saying because of the noise. He pulled me out of bed and pointed to the door and then pushed me from behind.I followed Mum into the bathroom. She put Brian in the bath and shouted to me to get in too. Then Dad came in carrying the mattress from my bed. Mum pushed us down so we were almost lying in the bath and Dad threw the mattress over the top of us. It suddenly became much quieter. Mum shouted “Everything’s going to be OK, it’s just a bad storm. It’ll soon be over and you’ll be safe in the bath.” She pushed some blankets into the bath and covered us again with the mattress.Part 2Even with the mattress on top of us, we could still hear the sounds of the cyclone. I wrapped the blankets round us and hugged Brian. He was only seven years old and trembling with fear and cold. At some point the noise stopped altogether. I pushed the mattress off us and looked out. Mum was sitting in the small space between the wall and the toilet and Dad was between the toilet and the bath. Dad told us not to move. “We are in the calm centre of the cyclone,” he said. “It’s called the eye. The cyclone will soon move away and the wind making that noise will come back.” So we waited. That was the worst time, sitting in the quiet waiting for the noise and violence to return. When it was finally over, Dad lifted the
mattress off our hiding place and we
stepped out into a changed world. We
were all shocked. The side of our house
was gone and so was most of our furniture.
Worst of all, the Christmas tree and all
the presents had disappeared. It was
going to be a most unusual Christmas!Reading task (P72)Trapped by the floodPre-reading

and why?
Sara’s husband Tony told her because he
was afraid the valley would become flooded.
Sara’s mother’s house was on higher ground
so it was less likely to be flooded.2. What was the first sign Sara had that she was
in danger?
A sound like water going down the drain in
the bath.
3. Who was in the house with Sara?
Her baby, a dog and a cat.
4. Why did Sara climb onto the roof of her car?
The water was rising and she had to get
somewhere above it.Discussion Imagine you are Sara. Tell your partner
what happened on the day of the flood.
Use your imagination to invent an
ending to the story.I was in the house by myself. Tony phoned and
told me to leave the house right away because
the river was going to flood. Suddenly I noticed
that water was coming into the house. I was
really worried because I knew that the house
would soon be flooded. I put Brian into his
backpack and the cat in its basket and we
rushed out the front door as fast as we could,
the dog swimming beside me. At first I couldn’t
think what to do, then I ran over to the car. First I pushed the cat and dog onto the roof
then I climbed up on it myself. I looked down
and saw the water was still rising. I was
frightened.
We stayed on the roof for about two hours
and all the time the water was getting higher
and higher. I didn’t know what to do next.
Then all of a sudden I saw a motor boat
coming towards us. It was Tony! We were
going to be rescued.A few days after Sara was rescued from the flood she told her mother about her experience. Listen and make notes about the main events in the story. Then use your notes to make a timeline, starting at 9:40 am when Sara climbed onto her car and ending at 6 pm when she arrived at the hospital.Listening Task on page 73Sara climbed on to the roof of the car.climbed on to the roof of the housefound a place to sit and took

A few days after Sara was rescued from the flood she told her mother about her experience. Listen and make notes about the main events
in the story.M: How are you feeling now, love?
S: Much better, thanks, Mum. I’m just
relieved we’re all safe.
M: Mmm. And it’s all thanks to you.
How did you get onto the roof
anyway?S: Well, first I got onto the roof of the car, but I could see the water was getting higher. Luckily, the car was parked outside the garage. So all I had to do was climb onto the garage roof and from there onto the house roof. The hardest part was climbing up to the top of the roof. It was very wet and I was worried I might slide down.M: You must have been terrified.
S: I think I was too busy to be frightened.
I found a safe place to sit. I took James
out of the backpack and held him in my
arms. That’s when I realized Rosie wasn’t
with us. She was still standing on the
garage roof, soaking wet and trembling.
I called and called until she ran to where
we were sitting and buried her nose
under my arm. I was so glad to have
her with us.M: You must have been very cold up there.
S: Freezing. The rain was still pouring
down and the water was getting closer
and closer to us.
M: I hate to think what would have
happened if you’d been up there all
night.
S: Yes, we were so lucky the helicopter
found us before it got dark.
M: Thank goodness.重要词汇拓展1. erupt v. (指火山)爆发; 突然发生
