(T= teacher L=Lucy P=Pin J=Jack)
A teacher, Miss Jiang, is talking with her class about a poetry competition.Listening textPart 1
T: Remember that the deadline for the
poetry competition is the 24th. Who’s
going to enter the competition? Lucy,
how about you?
L: I’ve written something but if I had an
extra week. I could improve it.T: Lucy, I’m sure it’s very good
already. Now what about your poem,
Pitt?
P: I’m not going to enter a poem this
year. I just cannot think of anything
to write about.
T: Well, what about you, Jack?J: I haven’t begun mine yet. I plan to do
it this weekend- but only if I feel
inspired!
Part 2
T: OK everybody, let’s talk about
how to become inspired to write
poetry. Jack, let’s start with you. How
will you inspire yourself this weekend?J: Well, I intend to go for a hike in
the countryside and sit quietly
somewhere by myself.
T: How does that help, Jack?
J: Well, I notice a lot more-maybe an
insect carrying something, the shapes
and colors of flowers, how the wind
sounds, or the different smells in the air.
Anyway, I find that as I look around
me all sorts of interesting thoughts and
words come into my mind.T: That sounds great. Would anybody else
like to tell us how they become inspired to
write? Yes, Lucy?
L: Usually I write best when I’m
surrounded by familiar things, so I need to
be in my own house. But now I’ve listened
to Jack, I think I’ll try out this way too
some time.P: Actually I work best on my
homework when I’m listening to my
favorite music. I’ve never tried it
with poetry before but I’m going to
try it tonight.T: Great, Pitt. Well, we’ve had some
good ideas about how to become
inspired. And now I’m looking
forward to reading all your poems.Speaking Talking about plans

1. Work in groups. Write a list poem starting with “If I ...” like Poem C on page 10. Write two lines each. It does not have to rhyme. Your group can choose one of these lines to start your group poem. Then share your poems in class. EXAMPLE:
If I were the ruler of the world, I would ...
If I won a scholarship to a university abroad, I would ...
If I were a gifted pianist/violinist, I would ...
If I had taken your advice, I would/wouldn’t have ... On your own write a poem that starts
with “Slowly ...” and make each pair of
lines rhyme. Try to write about 6 lines.
EXAMPLE:
Slowly the moon climbs in the sky,
Slowly the blackbird lets out a cry.
Slowly the dog crosses the road,
Slowly the old man carries his load.
... People meet and people pass by
Some laugh while some cry
Some give up while some always try
Some say hi while some say bye
Others may forget you but never I.Enjoy yourselfAn example of clerihews (嵌名打油诗):Our art teacher, Mr. Shaw,
Really knows how to draw.
But his awful paintings,
Have caused many faintings. Pattern: a a b b pattern:rhyme:a a b b a走进一间房,
