The pupils of Grange town High have been busy getting to know their newest and tallest classmate, a 7-meter-tall giraffe outside their school
The giraffe is a huge sculpture made by a local artist. The school's headmaster noticed the sculpture in the artist's garden as he drove past one day. He thought it would be perfect for his school. “I knew everyone would love it,” he said, “because our basketball team is known as Grange town giraffes, and they wear giraffes on their shirts. So I asked them to write a letter to the artist, asking how much it would cost to buy the giraffe. He was very kind and got it ready to deliver in six weeks - all for nothing. It was expected to arrive on Sunday morning so that the pupils would see it when they got to school on Monday - at that time they had no idea that we were getting it.
The artist, Tom Bennett, was a university professor of chemistry before he left that job in 2006 and only took up metalwork a couple of years ago. “I've always drawn pictures,” he said, “I can even remember doing it on my first day at school - I drew a horse. I wanted it to be the best horse picture ever, but I don't think I succeeded.” Tom's first metalwork was a bicycle for two that he and his wife could go cycling on together. “It was a most uncomfortable bike ever created,” he said, “So I gave up making bicycles and went into sculpture instead.”
Meanwhile, the pupils at Grange town High are very happy with their new classmate. “We are going to hold a competition to give it a proper name.” said one girl. “Everyone likes the expression on his face, so perhaps that will give us some ideas.”
24. According to the text, the giraffe _______________.
A. was as tall as a basketball player B. was given to Grange town High for free

Felix Ruppert and Alexander Badri-Sprowitz at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart, Germany, designed a half-metre-high robot called Morti and gave it the ability to teach itself how to walk, rather than to perform a pre-programmed step. The four-legged robot took only an hour to learn how to walk steadily, roughly the same amount of time as newborn horses need. And it’s the first time that a machine learning technique has been so successfully applied to four-legged robots.
Morti is controlled by an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm (算法) that doesn’t have much information about the robot’s legs, such as the exact shape of each element. “The AI, working like the central nervous system, gives walking instructions for Morti to follow. It then adjusts (调整) them based on readings from foot sensors that signal when the robot falls and loses contact with the ground. Initially (最初), Morti falls down, but after about an hour the AI finds the best way to make it walk,” said Ruppert.
Because the AI learns rather than computing details of each leg’s movement in advance, which can use a lot of energy, Morti walks using 42 percent less energy than when it first starts at the end of an hour-long learning process. Morti’s process copies the way baby animals learn to move, as they also find the most efficient way to use their muscles by trying and initially tripping.
Dhireesha Kudithipudi at The University of Texas at San Antonio said that AI robots can often learn a specific task very well but can’t readjust when the environment changes and that Morti’s design, which relies on continually adjusting the robot’s movements, may perform better in that regard. Ruppert said he and the team are working on adding more sensors and range of motion to Morti to make it a more animal-like robot.
28. What is special about Morti
A. It is pre-programmed to walk. B. It can help teach the newborns.
C It is the first four-legged robot. D. It can learn to walk by itself.
29. Which part of Morti is stressed in paragraph 2
A. Its body structure. B. Its design concept.
C. Its learning process. D. Its working conditions.
30. How does the AI’s learning ability benefit Morti
A. By predicting Morti’s leg movements. B. By training Morti’s muscles to the best.
C. By lowering Morti’s energy consumption. D. By strengthening Morti’s bond with others.
31. What is Dhireesha Kudithipudi’s attitude toward Morti
A. Doubtful. B. Concerned. C. Indifferent. D. Positive.

Having a teenager at home can be a real headache. Many teenagers smoke, drink and even fight. They often do something dangerous.
Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely to make irrational decisions than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers are too young to tell right from wrong Not really. So what’s the reason
According to Laurence, a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care a lot about how their peers (同龄人) view them—that is “peer influence”.
As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates, and also they care more about what they think of them. This makes teenagers make decisions without thinking about the costs.
In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends watching around them, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely.
Why do peers have such a big influence on teens’ behavior
As Laurence sees it, a teenager’s brain is like a car with a good accelerator (油门) but a weak brake (刹车). The “accelerator” is fully developed by teenage years while the “brake” is still not fully developed. When teenagers are watched by their peers, they usually push hard on the accelerator. With their weak brake, it is likely that they are going to end up in an accident.
But the good news is that a violent (暴力) teenager doesn’t necessarily become a violent adult. About two-third to three-quarters of violent youth grow out of it. “They get more self-controlled. ”
32. What does the underlined word“irrational”in the 2nd paragraph mean
A. Quick. B. Crazy. C. Careful. D. Correct.
33. Why are teenagers likely to make wrong decisions according to the text
A. They like difficult tasks. B. They don’t care about costs.
C. They are too young to tell right from wrong. D. They care a lot about what their peers think of them.
34. How does Laurence explain the influence of peer pressure on teens’ behavior
A. By comparing it with how a car works. B. By comparing it with an accident.
C. By showing research findings. D. By giving examples.
35. According to the passage, who intends to make wrong decisions
A. A pupil. B. A high school student. C. A home schooling child. D. An adult.

Tina was a 13-year-old girl. She was playing in the yard one morning when she overheard her parents’ dialogue. Her father, a sheepherder who raised hundreds of sheep, was going to the nearest town to do some urgent things. He suggested that Tina should herd (放牧) the sheep while he was away. But her mother, a disabled woman, doubted whether Tina could do that.
Hearing this, Tina stepped into her parents’ room. “Mom, I can herd the sheep. I have grown up,” said Tina, full of expectation. Her parents smiled and agreed. After putting some bread and water into her bag as lunch, Tina drove the sheep out of sheepfold (羊圈), walking them south to a distant grassland. Her mother repeatedly told her that she didn’t have to herd the sheep until the sunset like her father did. But Tina had made up her mind to prove that she had grown up.
It was the first time that Tina had herded the sheep. That day seemed much longer than any other day before. The sun seemed to have stopped in the middle of the sky. The bread was eaten up soon and so was the water. So after some hesitation, Tina finally decided to drive the sheep back home while the sun was still high in the west.
Tina’s father was waiting outside the sheepfold, as if he had expected all that. He smiled at Tina but Tina just kept her head down. The sheep soon got into the sheepfold. Tina was about to shut the door when her father told her to count the sheep in case that some sheep were lost. Tina followed her father’s orders despite her unwillingness.
The sheep were not cooperative (配合的) at all. They were coming and going. Tina counted the sheep three times but each was a different number. She tried again and again and at last she told her father that she had lost three. Her father was not angry but said, “Three Are you kidding ” Tina felt so guilty that she turned around immediately and went to look for the missing sheep and the pride as well.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
It was getting dark and Tina walked along the path to the grassland in search of the sheep.

M: This is a message for Marco Taylor. My name is David Wilson. I’m sorry I missed your call. I know you want some information about the volleyball club. The club meets once a week, on Thursday evening. There are sometimes matches on Sunday morning, but those are just for our players. Our meetings begin at 7:30, and are about two hours long. Most people like to get home in time for the sports programme on television at ten o’clock. We meet in Jubilee Hall, just in the Park Street. The hall doesn’t have very good heating, so you’ll need to bring a sweater to put on afterwards. The hall is quite expensive to rent so we need to pay 30 each week. I hope this answers your questions and we’ll be very pleased to see you at our next meeting.

C. It is the first four-legged robot. D. It can learn to walk by itself.
29. Which part of Morti is stressed in paragraph 2
A. Its body structure. B. Its design concept.
C. Its learning process. D. Its working conditions.
30. How does the AI’s learning ability benefit Morti
A. By predicting Morti’s leg movements. B. By training Morti’s muscles to the best.
C. By lowering Morti’s energy consumption. D. By strengthening Morti’s bond with others.
31. What is Dhireesha Kudithipudi’s attitude toward Morti
A. Doubtful. B. Concerned. C. Indifferent. D. Positive.
D 29. C 30. C 31. D
根据第一段中“Felix Ruppert and Alexander Badri-Sprowitz at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart, Germany, designed a half-metre-high robot called Morti and gave it the ability to teach itself how to walk, rather than to perform a pre-programmed step.(德国斯图加特马克斯·普朗克智能系统研究所的菲利克斯·鲁珀特和亚历山大·巴德里-斯普罗维茨设计了一个半米高的机器人Morti,并赋予了它自学走路的能力,而不是执行预先编程的步骤)”可知,Morti可以自己学习走路。
根据第二段中“Morti is controlled by an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm (算法) that doesn’t have much information about the robot’s legs, such as the exact shape of each element. “The AI, working like the central nervous system, gives walking instructions for Morti to follow. It then adjusts (调整) them based on readings from foot sensors that signal when the robot falls and loses contact with the ground. Initially (最初), Morti falls down, but after about an hour the AI finds the best way to make it walk,” said Ruppert.( Morti由人工智能算法控制,该算法没有关于机器人腿的太多信息,比如每个元素的确切形状。“人工智能就像中枢神经系统一样,向Morti发出行走指令。然后,它会根据足部传感器的读数来调整它们,当机器人跌倒并与地面失去联系时,足部传感器会发出信号。一开始,Morti摔倒了,但大约一个小时后,人工智能找到了让它走路的最佳方法。”)”可知,本段主要强调的是Morti的学习过程。故选C。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Because the AI learns rather than computing details of each leg’s movement in advance, which can use a lot of energy, Morti walks using 42 percent less energy than when it first starts at the end of an hour-long learning process.(由于人工智能学习而不是提前计算每条腿的运动细节,这可能会消耗大量的能量,在一个小时的学习过程结束后,Morti走路消耗的能量比第一次开始时减少了42%)”可知,人工智能的学习能力减少了Morti的能量消耗。
根据最后一段中“Dhireesha Kudithipudi at The University of Texas at San Antonio said that AI robots can often learn a specific task very well but can’t readjust when the environment changes and that Morti’s design, which relies on continually adjusting the robot’s movements, may perform better in that regard.(德克萨斯大学圣安东尼奥分校的Dhireesha Kudithipudi表示,人工智能机器人通常可以很好地学习特定任务,但不能在环境变化时重新调整,而Morti的设计依赖于不断调整机器人的动作,在这方面可能表现得更好)”可知,Dhireesha Kudithipudi对Morti应是持肯定的态度的。故选D。

According to Laurence a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care a lot about how their peers (同龄人) view them—that is “peer influence”.
D. An adult.
B 33. D 34. A 35. B

这里用形容词修饰名词,shine的形容词形式可以是shiny/shining,故填shiny/shining。
so…that… 故填so。
故填a。

Paragraph 1:
It was getting dark and Tina walked along the path to the grassland in search of the sheep. Tina searched everywhere she could think of, but in vain. The grass and jungle along the path seemed like beasts that were ready to attack her. Tina might lack the courage to walk in such a dark night before, but not that night. After 3 hours’ searching, she was exhausted. So she went back home. Her parents were sitting on the bed, seeming to be waiting for her. Tina gathered her courage and said in a low voice, “Dad, I failed. I didn’t find them back.”
Paragraph 2:
“No, you didn’t lose them,” her father said calmly, much to her surprise. He then told her the best time to count the sheep was when they were getting into the sheepfold through the door. Tina said she was too stupid to think of that. But her mother comforted her, saying that her father followed all the way to make sure Tina was safe. Tina was so touched and went forward to hug her parents. They smiled and patted Tina, “We are proud of you. You have really grown up!”
