and describe them;
To learn about different painting styles in Western art.
What do you know about this painting
School of Athens 《
The fresco shows many famous philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, and Pythagoras, though it is not clear who they all are. Although all shown together, they were not all contemporaries
School of Athens
The painting is of the fresco (湿壁画) painting School of Athens by Raphael (拉斐尔, 1483-1520). It was painted between 1509 and 1511 on a wall in the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City
Fresco painting
Fresco painting is a technique of painting on wet plaster (灰泥). Water is mixed with dry powdered paint (研磨好的干粉颜料), so the painting mixes with the plaster and becomes part of the wall.
Raphael
Raphael (1483-1520) was the architect of the high renaissance (文艺复兴), a short period in Italian history when many incredible works of art were produced. He produced many works of art and, along with Michelangelo (米开朗基罗) and Leonardo da Vinci (达芬奇), is considered the third great master of the period. He is best known for his frescoes in the Vatican.

Post-reading

Discuss the following questions in groups. Then choose one to answer.
1. Which period of Western art do you like most Why are you fond of it
I like Modern Art most. There are many different styles within this period. The paintings of Modern Art can mean different things to different people.
2. How would you answer the question, “What is art ”
I think that art is anything that someone has created and is
beautiful or produces emotion inside us. Art is not just
painting and drawing. It can be photography, or cooking,
or music, or dancing, or playing a sport. If it is done with
skill and moves the viewer, then I think it is art.
Which artwork do you like best
Why was the painting created
What is the painting about
Who is the painter
In which period was the painting created
How do you feel about it
My favourite artwork
This painting is an art piece of Impressionism. The focus of the painting is a person. It does not have a detailed record of the scene, but it is full of light, shadow, colour, and life. I guess it was painted by Renoir. During this time, with the invention of photography, he didn’t have to paint
what he saw realistically, and could convey his subjective impression. I can feel the inner warmth and humanity from the outer image.
Love of beauty is taste.
The creation of beauty is art.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
Art as the creation of beauty is a process which involves a lot of motivation, energy, and effort, and of course, imagination. Having good taste and appreciating art perhaps help one’s ability to create art, and therefore beauty.
