“I want my video to record my high school memory and that of everyone in China who has gone through gaokao,” said Lian Yingcheng, 20, a student from Shenzhen University. The 18-minute vlog got over 1 million views on Bilibili.
However, Lian said that he didn’t expect this video to go viral at all when he was making it. “I have loved using videos to record my life for a long time,” Lian said. “The idea of this long vlog has been in my mind since I started high school.”
Throughout the three years of high school life, Lian’s camera went everywhere. No matter if it was a tug-of-war (拔河) activity, before a big exam, or simply just a Tuesday noon when everyone was running towards the canteen, Lian was always there to catch the reactions (反应) of himself and his classmates. “I didn’t want to design any scene,” he said.
With Lian’s words in the background, the video tells the story of an ordinary high school boy who struggles to fight gaokao, repeatedly questioning himself and rebuilding his confidence. The friendship between him and his classmates, and his broad outlook after failure are all recorded in the scenes. “The original idea in my mind was to tell an encouraging story of gaokao, but then my gaokao result didn’t turn out that well. After dealing with the pain, I realized that accepting failure and regrets is a more important lesson to learn than ‘getting my wish’,” Lian said.
People online expressed how much they could relate to the feelings in the video. Some said that Lian did something they couldn’t do. “I realized that this means more than just recording my life and thoughts,” Lian said. “I want to keep on running this channel, to touch and warm more people in the future.”
4. What is the 18-minute vlog about
A. School activities. B. Gaokao in China.
C. University students. D. Lian’s high school life.
5. What does the underlined word “viral” mean in Paragraph 2

6. Which can best describe Lian’s gaokao
A. Creative. B. Successful. C. Boring. D. Unsatisfying.
7. What can we know from the text
A. The video is for parents.
B. Lian will continue to make more videos.
C. The vlog records the happy moments only.
D. Every scene in Lian’s video was designed by himself.

An international team of researchers, led by Dr Christine Batchelor of Newcastle University, UK, used clear pictures of the seafloor to show just how quickly a former ice cover retreated (退去) at the end of the last Ice Age, about 20,000 years ago.
The team mapped more than 7,600 small-scale landforms across the seafloor. The ridges (山脊) are less than 2.5m high and are spaced between about 25 and 300 metres apart. These landforms are understood to have formed when the ice cover’s retreating edge moved up and down with the tides (潮汐), pushing seafloor into a ridge every low tide. Given that two ridges would have been produced each day, the researchers were able to work out how quickly the ice cover retreated. Their results, reported in the journal Nature, show the former ice cover rapidly retreats at a speed of 50 to 600 metres per day.
The seafloor landforms also give light into the way in which such rapid retreat can happen. Dr Batchelor and co-workers noted that the former ice cover had retreated fastest across the flattest parts of its bed.
“An ice can go away from the seafloor and retreat quickly when it becomes buoyant (有浮力的),” explained co-author Dr Frazer Christie. “This retreat only happens across relatively flat beds, where less melting (融化) is required to thin the overlying ice to the point where it starts to float (漂浮).”
The researchers believe that the quick retreat could soon be observed in parts of Antarctica. This includes at West Antarctica’s vast Thwaites Glacier. The authors of this new study suggest that it could go through quick retreat because it has recently retreated close to a flat area of its bed.
“Our findings suggest that present-day rates of melting are enough to cause quick short retreat across flat-bedded areas of the Antarctic Ice Sheet, including at Thwaites,” said Dr Batchelor. “Satellites (卫星) may well know this ice-cover retreat in the near future, especially if we continue our climate warming.”
8. What is the purpose of Paragraph 1
A. To provide some advice for the readers.
B. To add some background information.
C. To make the story interesting.
D. To bring in the topic.
9. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us
A. Where the ice cover’s retreating lies.
B. Why the ice cover’s retreating is formed.
C. What the result of ice cover’s retreating is.
D. How the speed of ice cover’s retreating is worked out.
10. Why is Thwaites Glacier mentioned in the text
A. To give an example of quick retreat.
B. To tell where it is located.
C. To compare different types of retreat.
D. To explain why it is important.
11. What is Dr Batchelor’s attitude to the ice cover’s retreating
A. Unclear. B. Anxious.
C. Positive. D. Doubtful.
D
Everyone wants to hold people’s attention. So do media companies. The reason is simple: The further down a news story readers read, the more advertising income (收入) from the article creates. And the more a piece of content holds attention, the more customers learn about the product, service, or problems discussed.
Why do some articles encourage readers to keep reading, while others make them lose interest after just a few sentences And how does the content (i.e., the language used) shape whether people stay engaged (参与)
It is important to differ long-time attention from other types of engagement. One way of measuring (测量) engagement is clicks, views, or others that measure how many people were interested in a piece of content. As a researcher, Berger explains, “While the research before has examined how headlines or advertisements attract attention, we wish to find out how the content is able to hold a reader’s attention. Focusing on views and clicks does not necessarily lead to content being focused.”
Companies such as YouTube and Facebook use measures like “standing time”, or how long users spend reading a piece of content, to better measure engagement. A catchy headline might lead readers to click on a link, for example, but once they open the article, how much of it do they actually read Do they stop after the first few sentences Do they continue for most of the article Holding attention refers to whether content keeps the attracted attention, making people engaged.
“Our study shows that language that is easier to understand encourages continued reading, as does language that brings feelings,” says Moe, another researcher. But not all emotional language has the same effect. “That is, language that is worrying, exciting, and hopeful encourages reading while language that makes you feel down discourages it,” adds Schweidel, a third researcher.
12. Why do media companies want to hold people’s attention
A. To make more money.
B. To provide more services.
C. To improve the environment of network.
D. To attract more people to work for them.
13. What does “standing time” refer to in Paragraph 4
A. The time spent on the first few sentences.
B. The time spent on the headline.
C. The time spent on the content.
D. The time spent on Facebook.
14. What may make people stop reading according to Schweidel
A. Easy language. B. Anxious language.
C. Sad language. D. Positive language.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. How Language Make Effects on Attention
B. Why Everyone Wants to Hold Others’ Attention
C. How Media Companies Make Money from Readers
D. What Is the Connection Between Language and Feelings

That was the night before Christmas, and all through my head, were the three words my friend Julia said, “Santa’s not real.”
It was 1994, and at age nine I was way too old to still believe in Santa Claus. And yet, blindsided by Julia’s response to my deep love for Santa that year, I doubled down and branded (加污名于) Julia a liar. After all, movies had taught me that Christmas magic was more important than what I’d already begun doubting as fact. What did she know, anyway
But by Christmas Eve, I realized that Julia wasn’t wrong; that there was no way the Santa I was looking at while standing next to my parents could possibly make it to the North Pole and back to Cambridge, Ontario, by nightfall.
My dad headed off to buy a new suit for the holidays, and my mum led me to Shoppers Drug Mart. I looked at the chocolate while listening to the Christmas music playing over the store speakers. With each mention of Santa Claus or red-nosed reindeer I started to feel warm. I silently followed my mum up to the check-out counter, and felt the words rising, knowing there’d be no turning back once they came out.
“Mum,” I said, as the cashier rang us through. “Are you and Dad Santa ”
The cashier began scanning (扫描) items faster and faster, her widened eyes stuck to the digital display. I didn’t wait for a response before pressing on. “Is Santa real ”
The cashier was moving at record speed, and couldn’t wait to get me away. My mother, forever honest, simply looked at me. “Well, sweetie, what do you think ”
That was enough. I wan’t stupid. “SANTA’S NOT REAL!” I cried. By the time we made it to the car, I was crying quietly, looking out of the car window, vowing (发誓) never to forget the pain their lies had caused.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150左右;

But not all emotional language has the same effect. “That is, language that is worrying, exciting, and hopeful encourages reading while language that makes you feel down discourages it,” adds Schweidel, a third researcher.(另一位研究人员Moe说:“我们的研究表明,更容易理解的语言会鼓励人们继续阅读,就像能带来感觉的语言一样。” 故选A。

By the time we made it to the car I was crying quietly, looking out of the car window, vowing (发誓) never to forget the pain their lies had caused.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】At home, I sat sadly on the living room floor. I had to accept the fact that our Christmas tree was an obvious lie. “You already know the truth,” my mum said as my dad tended to his new suit. “I know this is hard, but now you’ve got to help keep the magic alive for your little cousin. You get to help make her Christmases feel extra special. She will stay with us this Christmas, remember ”
I certainly didn’t want to ruin my little cousin’s Christmas. I would try my best to keep the magic of Christmas alive for her. This made me cheer up. With all the beautiful Christmas decorations and surprising presents from “Santa Claus”, we had a wonderful time. Suddenly, I understood the true meaning of Christmas: not presents or the man in red, but power. The power to give and the power to take away. As my first act of this new found adulthood, I agreed never to ruin Santa Claus for anyone.
