A raffle ticket(抽彩奖券) to win a new 1959 Chevrolet; credit cards with no magnetic strip; family photos in black and white: All hidden behind a bathroom wall in the Plaza Theatre, untouched for decades.
Until 65 years later, when contractors discovered a hidden space behind a broken wall in the bathroom during renovations. Under a mountain of dust, in what used to be a closet, lay a faded red wallet, frozen in time.
From there, Plaza Theatre owner Chris Escobar said he was determined to return the wallet to the family. “It was a portal(正门) back in time,” he said.
That owner was one Floy Culbreth, according to a license inside the wallet. But Escobar ran into his first problem—women were often referred to by their husband’s name at that time, so searching Culbreth’s name yielded few results.
Escobar recruited his wife Nicole, who he calls an “internet sleuth,” to track down the owner of the wallet. She was able to find Roy Culbreth’s obituary(讣告)—Floy’s husband. Through tracing the Culbreth bloodline, Escobar discovered Thea Chamberlain via the Culbreth Cup, a family-run charity golf event. Now 71, Thea recalled her mother’s active community role, including. Sunday school teaching, garden club involvement, and charitable work for cerebral palsy.
The Culbreth family’s gathering at the Plaza Theatre in November to reclaim the wallet was a touching scene. The moment was especially significant for Chamberlain’s young grandchildren. As they explored the contents, they grasped the importance of this family artifact, realizing they were part of a special legacy.

The Central Museum in the Netherlands launched a unique project this month, titled “The Blind Spot,” in a push to enhance accessibility and enjoyment for the visually impaired. This exhibit goes beyond traditional art experiences by recreating well-known paintings with additional dimensions, integrating elements like sound and smell—including the fragrance of ripe cheese. Unlike typical museum rules, visitors are encouraged to touch the artworks.
The project involves the copies of famous paintings, with the addition of representative elements that can be heard or smelled. Visitors, including those with visual impairments, can truly engage with the art, as touchable elements have been integrated. Sighted visitors are even encouraged to wear blindfolds to fully immerse themselves in the experience of works like “Stil life with fruits, nuts, and cheese” by Floris Claesz van Dijck from 1610 and “Stil life (Bowl with apples)” by Bart van der Leck.
The art experience was the brainchild of artist Jasper Cate and designer Jeroen Prins. The inspiration struck when the two were serving food alongside artwork at a food performance event. It took root when a blind woman attending the event expressed being profoundly moved by the experience. “That moment became the starting point,” said Cate.
Visitor Farid El Manssouri clearly enjoyed his experience. A smile lit up his face as he explored the touching elements of cheese, grapes, and bread, all part of the representation of the famous 1610 painting by Floris van Dyck. Sharing his impressions, El Manssouri remarked, “The first thing that struck me was the smell. I could truly sense the scent of the cheese, and I even touched it.” El Manssouri wondered how the food items managed to stay in their seemingly unbalanced positions. “It was incredible. I suppose it was securely attached,” he wowed.
Steffie Maas, the museum’s director, stated that Blind Spot was just one trial on the path to further improvements, emphasizing that improved accessibility and facilities are equally crucial as the exhibition itself.
8. What do we know about the Blind Spot exhibition
A. It offered visitors ripe cheese to taste.
B It challenges conventional museum practices.
C. It encouraged deaf visitors to wear blindfolds.
D. It only accepted blind and partially sighted visitors.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. The inspiration for the art experience. B. The brainchild of the director.
C. The food performance event. D. Food alongside artwork.
10. What caught Manssouri’s interest
A. The sense of touch. B. The smell of the grapes.
C. The firm attachment of the food items. D. The creation procedure of the paintings.
11. Which topic is most likely to deal with in the following paragraph
A. Comparison with other museum exhibitions.
B. More efforts to improve visitors’ experience.
C. Detailed analysis of the artworks in Blind Spot.
D. Challenges faced during the exhibition preparation.

Earth’s protective ozone(臭氧) layer is slowly but noticeably healing at a pace that would fully mend the hole over Antarctica in about 43 years, a new United Nations report says. The layer of ozone in Earth’s atmosphere shields the planet from harmful radiation linked to skin cancer, cataracts and crop damage. The progress is slow. The global average amount of ozone 18 miles high in the atmosphere won’t be back to 1980 pre-thinning levels until about 2040, the report said. And it won’t be back to normal in the Arctic until 2045. Antarctica, where it’s so thin there’s an annual giant gaping hole in the layer, won’t be fully fixed until 2066, the report said.
Scientists and environmental advocates across the world have long hailed the efforts to heal the ozone hole—springing out of a 1987 agreement called the Montreal Protocol that called on all countries to ban a class of chemicals often used in refrigerants and aerosol—as one of the biggest ecological victories for humanity. “Our success in phasing out ozone-eating chemicals shows us what can and must be done to transition away from fossil fuels, reduce greenhouse gases and so limit temperature increase,” professor Petteri Taalas said in a statement. Signs of healing were reported four years ago although the observations at that point were in the early stages. “Those numbers of recovery have solidified a lot recently,” Petteri said.
“There has been a sea change in the way our society deals with ozone reducing substances,” said lead researcher David W. Fahey. Decades ago, people could go into a store and buy a can of refrigerants that eat away at the ozone. Now, not only are the substances banned but they are no longer much in people’s homes or cars, replaced by cleaner chemicals.
Natural weather patterns in the Antarctic also affect ozone hole levels. And the past couple years, the holes have been a bit bigger because of that but the overall trend is one of healing. This is “saving 2 million people every year from skin cancer,” United Nations Environment Programme Director Inger Andersen said in an email.
12. What can be concluded about ozone layer from the United Nations report
A. It has been improved. B. It has little harmful radiation now.
C. It will be in the best condition in 2040. D. It will free Antarctica of biological risks in 2066.
13. What leads to present situation of ozone layer
A. New household appliances. B. Development in fossil fuels.
C. Global efforts and cooperation. D. Measures to slow global warming.
14. What happens to substances consuming ozone
A. They are likely to be prohibited. B. They are not easily obtainable currently.
C. They fail to meet great demand. D. They are produced at a low cost.
15. Which one of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. Antarctic: a promising island.
B. Ozone layer: on track to recovery.
C. Restoration Progress: Overcoming Challenges.
D. The Montreal Protocol: A Global Success Story.

What Color Is a Hug
When my daughter Bernadette was 10 years old, I found myself very worried about her. Her mother had passed away before she turned one, and I, needing to provide for our livelihood, had to work long hours, leaving little time for her. Although she was close to her grandparents, unfortunate circumstances took them away as well. The series of losses implanted unbearable pain on her young soul.
A merciless series of losses like that is hard on anyone, especially a child. But it was particularly hard on Bernadette because of her sensitive and loving nature. Prolonged periods of isolation and silence led her into a deep depression. The sparkle in her eyes faded, and her face lost the once-present smiles. She lost interest in playing, learning, and even declined invitations from friends. She often lost in her own thoughts without uttering a word for a long time.
Witnessing my daughter’s suffering, I felt a deep sense of guilt and helplessness. I knew she needed more than just companionship; she needed a healing of the soul. I began reading more about child psychology, attempting to understand how to guide her out of this situation.
Over the next few months, I adjusted my work schedule to spend more time by her side. I tried to communicate with her, stepping into her inner world. I encouraged her to join some extracurricular classes, developing new friendships. Slowly but surely, Bernadette began to regain her interest in certain things, and smiles started to reappear on her face.
Meanwhile I started using hugs to comfort her. Each embrace conveyed my love and support, providing her with warmth and a sense of security. Gradually, she became more cheerful and confident. She initiated social interactions, sharing her thoughts with friends. Her mood gradually lifted, and life regained its brilliance.
After years of effort, Bernadette finally stepped out of depression. Our habit of hugging has persisted to this day, becoming the most sincere bond between us. Now, as my daughter is about to enter university, and I am approaching my fiftieth birthday, she has promised me a special gift.

Meanwhile, I started using hugs to comfort her.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
As her summer vacation began, she seemed even busier than before. Every single day, she set out on her journey early in the morning and returned late in the evening, immersed in activities that remained a mystery to me. Despite the apparent fatigue that accompanied her daily return, a noticeable transformation unfolded within her — a gradual increase in the glow of her smile and an overwhelming sense of inner fulfillment and joy that enveloped her. The embrace we shared daily, often described by her as the wellspring of warmth and security, persisted and continued between us. In the blink of an eye, my birthday approaching, she mysteriously expressed her desire to take me to a special place. Eagerly following her lead, we found ourselves at the doorstep of a community activity center.
Paragraph 2:
Before us was a warmly decorated studio, with a sign reading “Heartwarming Embrace Association.” I was profoundly moved, understanding the reason behind her busy summer days. With her explanation, I grasped the mission and goals of this association. Bernadette hadn’t forgotten the unbearable pain of the past; she deeply understood the importance of hugs in healing the soul. Thus, she resolved to extend this warmth from me to a broader audience. She established an organization called the “Heartwarming Embrace Association”, dedicated to providing hugs and comfort to those in need of care and support, bringing warmth to hearts that felt lonely, lost, or injured. Looking at my daughter, full of love and vitality, I felt a wave of pride flooding over me. At that moment, I seemed to better sense the color of hugs and I couldn’t help but acknowledge that this was the most extraordinary and meaningful gift I could receive on my fiftieth birthday.
