When I was nine years old. I pulled out my grandmother’s dress over my young frame, admiring myself in the mirror. I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. Later in senior high school, I began to dream of being an adult to explore a big world and make adventures. However, I knew adulthood for me was still distant because I supported myself mainly with the money from my family.
Fresh out of college, I was working as a middle school teacher. I was in charge of young people and heavy with that responsibility. I arrived at school early and stayed late, preparing lessons and chatting with students. I was an official adult. I paid my rent and taxes. But I still felt as if I were playing a role. I was the adult authority figure who secretly didn’t feel grown-up in a room full of children. But I wasn’t worried; I was convinced that it would happen soon.
To me, an adult is someone who is mature and trustworthy—a contributing member of the society. We strive to become adults while there is also someone who spends life constantly partying and avoiding responsibility. A grown-up, however, is a state of mind. Our body gets older but something inside us doesn’t feel as if it is progressing as quickly.
In the following ten years, I followed the routines of adulthood: getting married, giving birth and working. My 6-year-old daughter and I often held hands, running breathlessly and laughing wildly. I tried to avoid eye contact with the nearby people who glared at us. I suspect they would prefer adults who would never slide down a giant hill of sand.
I turned 57 recently and it occurred to me that maybe I had it all wrong; I should stop waiting to feel grown-up. What if we embraced (拥抱) the child-like part of ourselves to enjoy it, guilt free If we’re responsible adults and do all the adult things in a way that works, why should it matter if we don’t feel grown-up deep inside Non-grown-ups don’t necessarily play games, but it isn’t fun embracing the playful side of life Why can’t we feel 57 and 15 years old at the same time

A. What an adult means in her opinion.
B. What an adult’s state of mind can be.
C. Why some people spend life avoiding responsibility.

Family members of brain-damaged patients may no longer have to wait anxiously to see if their loved ones will regain awareness since scientists have developed a test to predict who will wake up.
Yale researchers discovered that measuring how much glucose (葡萄糖) the brain uses is a good sign of how much damage has been done, and whether a patient will recover awareness within a year.
Currently there is no way of telling how long it will take for someone with brain damage to regain consciousness, and families are often forced to take the heartbreaking decision of switching off life support system. Keeping someone on life support is also expensive.
“In nearly all cases, whole-brain energy turnover (流转) directly predicted either the current level of consciousness or the brain’s later recovery,” says Dr. Ron Kupers of the University of Copenhagen and Yale University. “In short, our findings indicate that there is a minimal energy requirement for sustained consciousness to arise after brain injury. The important message is that consciousness is a highly energy-demanding process, involving the brain. The feature can help doctors determine the potential for recovery of awareness in patients suffering from severe brain injuries of any kind.”
The researchers thought that a brain which was still functioning would still need energy supplies, and that measuring how much glucose was absorbed by the organ could indicate that it was still active.
They injected patients with glucose which contained a tracer molecule (分子) that could be picked up on scans and watched to see how much was absorbed by the brain. They found patients with glucose metabolism (新陈代谢) below 42 percent of normal activity did not recover awareness within 12 months.
The new test can predict with 94 percent accuracy if a patient will wake up. There are likely to be ethical (伦理的) concerns, however, as the test would not work for a small number of people, meaning families could make the wrong decisions on switching off life support.
8. How do the scientists predict whether unconscious patients will wake up
A. By observing the level of the recovery of the brain cells.
B. By figuring out how much energy the brain requires.
C. By calculating how much glucose the brain uses.
D. By measuring whether the brain still functions.
9. What can be inferred from the text
A. Brain injury can speed up metabolic activity in nearly all cases.
B. The new test can tell exactly when a brain-damaged patient will come to himself.
C. A certain level of energy is needed for sustained consciousness to appear after brain injury.
D. Patients whose glucose metabolism is below the normal level will not regain consciousness.
10. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 5 refer to
A. The function. B. The brain. C. The energy. D. The glucose.
11. What is the subject of the last paragraph
A. The value of the test. B. The disadvantage of the test.
C. The process of the test. D. The complexity of the test.
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. B 11. B

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“In short, our findings indicate that there is a minimal energy requirement for sustained consciousness to arise after brain injury.(简而言之,我们的研究结果表明,脑损伤后持续意识的能量需求最小)”可知,脑损伤后需要一定程度的能量才能出现持续的意识。故选C。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“The researchers thought that a brain which was still functioning would still need energy supplies, and that measuring how much glucose was absorbed by the organ could indicate”以及后文“was still active.”
根据最后一段“The new test can predict with 94 percent accuracy if a patient will wake up. There are likely to be ethical(伦理的) concerns, however, as the test would not work for a small number of people, meaning families could make the wrong decisions on switching off life support.(这项新测试可以预测病人是否会醒来,准确率为94%。然而,这可能会引起道德上的担忧,因为这项测试对一小部分人不起作用,这意味着家庭可能会在关闭生命维持系统方面做出错误的决定)”可知,最后一段的主题是测试的缺点。故选B。

Greece has criticized the United Kingdom for canceling (取消) a planned meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, apparently so that Sunak could avoid talking about ancient artefacts (历史文物) that Greece says were taken illegally. Mitsotakis and Sunak were set to meet on Tuesday, but Sunak canceled it on Monday, reportedly after learning that Mitsotakis planned to talk about the Parthenon sculptures.
The UK government initially believed Mitsotakis would not talk about the sculptures, which are now in the British Museum. The sculptures were once part of the Parthenon in the Greek capital Athens. The row (纠纷) became more serious after Mitsotakis told the BBC on Sunday the UK’s offer to store some of the sculptures in London and some in Athens was akin to cutting the Mona Lisa in two. He also said the sculptures had been essentially stolen.
Mitsotakis said he was deeply disappointed by the abrupt cancellation of the meeting. “Those who firmly believe in the correctness and justice of their positions are never hesitant to engage in constructive argument and debate,” he was quoted by The Associated Press as saying. The BBC reported that sources in the Greek government were puzzled and annoyed by the meeting cancellation.
Greece has long criticized the way in which the Parthenon sculptures ended up in London, after they were bought by British diplomat Lord Elgin and shipped to the UK between 1801 and 1804. Because the two nations disagree on the legality of the deal and have firm positions, they have tended to avoid talking about the issue during high-level diplomatic meetings.
The UK’s Transport Secretary Mark Harper said on the BBC’s Breakfast program on Tuesday that it was regretful that the prime ministers would not meet during Mitsotakis’UK visit. He said Mitsotakis had been offered the chance to meet instead the UK’s deputy prime minister, Oliver Dowden, but he had refused the meeting. “The views of Greece on the Parthenon sculptures are well known,” Mitsotakis was quoted by The Guardian as saying. “I had hoped to have the opportunity to discuss them with UK Prime Minister along with other international challenges. ” The UK’s opposition Labour Party criticized Sunak for canceling the meeting and said his behavior appeared disrespectful.
12. Which can replace the underlined phrase “akin to” in paragraph 2
A. Contrary to. B. Similar to. C. Relevant to. D. Adapted to
13. How did the Parthenon sculptures end up being in Great Britain
A. An Englishman purchased them and sent them there.
B. Some stole them and sold them to a British diplomat.
C. The then Greek government presented them to the UK as a gift.
D. The then British army took them by force and transported them there.
14. Why did Mitsotakis refuse to meet the UK’s deputy prime minister, Oliver Dowden
A. He was too occupied with other affairs.
B. He was supposed to meet UK Prime Minister.
C. He didn’t approve of his words and behaviors.
D. He had arranged for another official to meet him.
15. What is the best title for the news report
A. Sunak and Mitsotakis set to meet on Tuesday
B. Mitsotakis thinks highly of Greece artefacts stored in UK
C. Mitsotakis plans to take back Parthenon sculptures from UK
D. Greece’s arguing with UK about artefacts sparks diplomatic row
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. B 15. D

Nancy did cleaning in a commercial building with a fancy supermarket, a gym, a spa (温泉疗养中心), and a few fast food places. It was fairly populated, and people often showed kindness to her.
She often bought bread that was to be expired (过期的) soon in the supermarket and the employees there were familiar with her. During her break time, she liked to observe people, especially families. Nancy often saw a lady in the building. Usually the lady went to the gym first and then headed to the spa. Later, she’d come out dressed like a manager. One day, the woman took her kid with her. The little boy was no more than eight years old and didn’t look happy to be there with his mom.
“Henry, come on. I have to go to the gym now and hurry to get to work on time later,” the mother said in a rush.
The boy protested (反对) with a sad voice,“What am I going to do while you’re working out ” “Just sit still and read your book in the waiting area,” the mother replied.
“Can you at least buy me some candy You promised earlier,” the boy complained. “I don’t have time right now. Please hurry inside,” the mother answered.
Then the mother took the son’s hand and rushed into the gym. Nancy witnessed this all and was reminded of her own similar busy life in the past. She was once also a young busy woman. Her personal and work-related matters always came first in her life. She failed to spare enough time for her son and attach enough importance to his wishes. When she realized her problems, it was too late. Her son lost his life in an accident, leaving her with deep sadness and regret. To make matters worse, her company went bankrupt (破产) soon after.
Reflecting on her past life, Nancy had a thought. Though she was not wealthy, she wanted to do something nice for the boy: buy him a bar of chocolate.

【答案】Nancy knew where to buy a bar of chocolate. She went inside the supermarket. Seeing Nancy coming in, the employees in the supermarket greeted her warmly and one of them asked Nancy, “Are you going to buy any bread that is to be expired ” “No, not today,” answered Nancy, “I want to buy a bar of chocolate. ”Amazed, the employee looked at Nancy. After choosing a bar of chocolate, Nancy left the supermarket. She returned to the gym and found the boy in the waiting area.
Nancy thought the boy must be happy to accept the bar of chocolate. Smiling, she presented it to the boy. Astonished, obviously the boy didn’t want to take the chocolate from a stranger. “Don’t be afraid, boy. I am a worker here. Your mother promised to buy you some candy, but she was too busy to buy some, so she asked me to buy this chocolate for you. You can have it while waiting for your mother,” said Nancy. Hearing this, the boy took the chocolate and smiled, saying “Thank you”. Seeing the boy enjoying the chocolate, Nancy felt very happy as if she were watching her son tasting the chocolate.

What if we embraced (拥抱) the child-like part of ourselves to enjoy it, guilt free If we’re responsible adults and do all the adult things in a way that works, why should it matter if we don’t feel grown-up deep inside Non-grown-ups don’t necessarily play games, but it isn’t fun embracing the playful side of life Why can’t we feel 57 and 15 years old at the same time
4. How did the author feel about adulthood when she was a teenager
A She was unwilling to make adventures if she became an adult.
B. She showed no interest in thinking about it.
C She was expectant and hopeful about it.
D. She had unknown fears for it.
5. What did the author believe would happen to her before long according paragraph 2
A. Being respected by her children.
B. Becoming a capable teacher.
C. Living on her own.
D. Being a real adult.
6. What does the author mainly talk about in the third paragraph
A. What an adult means in her opinion.
B. What an adult’s state of mind can be.
C. Why some people spend life avoiding responsibility.
D. Why it doesn’t progress so quickly to become a grown-up.
7. What advice does the author give to us through her story
A. Be true to your inner self.
B. It’s never too late to learn.
C. Life is a bittersweet journey.
D. Nice souls are a masterpiece of time.
C
