Brent Ferguson owns Guitar Riot, a custom guitar store in Cleveland, Ohio. “I remember having music records when I was four or five years old,” says Brent Ferguson. “I was addicted to sitting in front of the music equipment and listening to music.”
Ferguson started Guitar Riot 12 years ago, after noting a lack of custom guitar stores in the area. A custom guitar is made carefully by a luthier, a person who makes guitars, violins and other stringed instruments according to a player’s exact requirements.
Ferguson has spent his life on music. He has played in bands and worked at other local guitar stores. He also was operations manager for Dr. Z Amplification, a store in nearby Maple Heights that sells musical instruments. He eventually decided to pursue (追求) is own business focusing on custom guitar sales.
Although Guitar Riot now sells mostly high-end custom guitars, that was not always the case. They had to achieve certain standards to become a high-end quality retailer (零售商).
“The guitar companies have requirements,” Ferguson said. “One is that we bring in a certain dollar amount. Another is the number of years a retailer has been in business.” Guitar Riot is now a retailer for respected guitar makers such as Gibson, Fender, Nash and Martin. The majority of the store’s business comes from online orders.
Over the years, many well-known musicians have bought their instruments from Guitar Riot. Jack White of the White Stripes, jazz musician Julian Lage, Tommy Henriksen of Alice Cooper, and Noel Gallagher of Oasis have all purchased custom guitars from the store.
Guitar Riot started out serving well-known guitarists, but Ferguson would like to reach new musicians, too. “When kids come in here who are interested in playing guitars,” Ferguson said, “we try to make it a positive experience for them. There definitely needs to be a younger generation interested in rock music.”
Guitar Riot is currently moving. Ferguson hopes that the new location will bring even more foot traffic to the store.
4. Why did Brent Ferguson start his guitar store
A. To realize his childhood dream. B. To learn to make guitars of high quality
C. To make music popular. D. To meet the needs of people around.
5. What do we know about Ferguson
A. He loves all his jobs. B. He is a man of strong will.
C. He has gone through various hardships. D. He has developed a close relationship with music.
6. How does Guitar Riot do its business
A. It sells guitars mainly online. B. It is targeted at young customers.
C. It sells other instruments besides guitars. D. It provides creative ideas for respected makers.
7. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 7 refer to
A. Guitar teachers. B. Kids.
C. Well-known guitarists. D. Former musicians.

Some new comets have been discovered accidentally by amateur (业余的) astronomers. Surprisingly a few bright comets have been discovered with the naked eye (肉眼) by members of the general public. However, a great number of comets are found by comet hunters carrying out telescope searches of chosen areas of the night sky.
As the movement of all comets is directed around the Sun and because these bodies brighten as they move towards the Sun, there is a greater possibility for the discovery of a new comet in the skies towards the Sun rather than away from the Sun's direction. This means that searches should be put on the western sky after evening light and on the eastern sky before morning light.
From the astronomical point there is no time during the year which is the best for the discovery of new comets. A search can be done at any time providing there is no bright Moon.
Studies done on the discovery conditions of comets discovered before show that more comets have been discovered in the morning sky than in the evening sky. Thus the smart comet hunter should make sure that morning activity receives as much if not more attention than any evening effort.
In recent times, the use of advanced CCD technology to discover objects close to the Earth will in the future greatly reduce the chances of new comets being found with small telescopes. An example of the new technology is the very successful LINEAR program operating in New Mexico, However, until a similar system is based in the southern half of the Earth there will continue to be chances for the discovery of new comets which come from the south.
8. What are comet hunters advised to do
A. Look away from the Sun.
B. Stay where there's bright light.
C. Face the western sky in the daytime.
D. Turn to the east in the early morning.
9. What do we know about the time for the discovery of new comets
A. Days when they're close to the Earth are great chances.
B. Certain fixed days are best for watching comets.
C. Every day is the same if there's no bright Moon.
D. Days with the Moon should never be missed.
10. Which of the following is a smart idea for comet hunters
A. Paying more attention in the morning than in the afternoon.
B. Being equally serious both in the morning and afternoon.
C. Being more relaxed in the morning than in the afternoon.
D. Forming a habit of working only in the morning.
11 What can be inferred about the CCD technology
A. It's similar to a telescope. B. It'll disappoint comet hunters.
C. It's spreading all over the world. D. It'll make comet hunters feel lucky.
D
“Regrets, I’ve had a few. But then again, too few to mention,” Frank Sinatra chanted in his 1969 hit “My Way”. The song’s idea is attractive: that anyone can just declare what’s done is done and move on. Some take the declaration a step further and claim they have no regrets at all. Whether a boast or an actual attitude, “no regrets” suggests that life can and should be lived without looking through the rear-view mirror.
Easier said than done, though. In 2020, author Daniel H. Pink launched the World Regret Survey, the largest ever survey on the topic. With his research team, Pink asked more than 15,000 people in 105 countries, “How often do you look back on your life and wish you had done things differently ” 82% said regret is at least an occasional part of their life; roughly 21% said they feel regret “al1 the time.” Only 1% said they never feel regret.
If you are of the “no regrets” type you might think that all this regret is a recipe for unhappiness. But that isn’t the case. True, being overwhelmed by regret is indeed bad for you. But going to the other extreme may be even worse. To rid yourself of regrets doesn’t free you from shame or sorrow; it leads you to make the same mistakes again and again. To truly get over our guilt requires that we put regret in its proper place.
As uncomfortable as it is, regret is an amazing cognitive (认知) achievement. If today your relationship with your partner has soured, your regret might mentally take you back to last year. You would remember your being mean and sensitive, and then imagine yourself showing more patience, being kind instead of hurtful at key moments. Then you would fast-forward to today and see how your relationship could be progressing instead of languishing.
But regret doesn’t have to be left unmanaged. The trick is to acknowledge it and use it for learning and improvement. You can be honest with yourself about what went wrong and use that knowledge to enjoy better relationships in the future.
12. What should we do if we have had a bitter quarrel with a close friend according to Frank Sinatra
A. Attract more people to your argument.
B. Send him/her a letter of apology.
C. Boast about being more reasonable.
D. Forget about it and just let it go.
13. Which of the following statements about regret may the writer agree with
A. We can do nothing about regret.
B. Unhappiness results from regret.
C. Ignoring regrets is missing the opportunity to improve.
D. Ridding yourself of regrets helps free you from sorrow.
14. What does the underlined word “languishing” in paragraph 4 most probably mean
A. Improving.
B. Healing.
C. Showing up.
D. Breaking up.
15. What might be a suitable title for the text
A. Regret to become smarter-if you let it.
B. Long for a different past Regret it!
C. Regret Not my way!
D. Stay away! Regret will heal itself.

It was one of Nilsa’s favorite dishes, and the national dish of Panama — a country in central America and the hometown of Nilsa’s family. Just thinking about sancocho made her mouth water.
Finally, it was time for lunch. Nilsa carefully poured some sancocho into a bowl. When she looked up, she saw her classmates staring.
“What is that It smells really bad,” said Gus, covering his nose. “It’s sancocho,” Nilsa responded. “It’s kind of like chicken soup.” Codi glanced at the bowl and said, “Soup It’s more like a science experiment.” He laughed, pointed to his lunch, and asked, “That’s one weird lunch. Why don’t you eat something normal, like pizza ”
Nilsa looked at everyone else’s lunches: pizza, fries, and sandwiches. Suddenly she didn’t feel hungry any more.
When Nilsa returned home and complained about her classmates’ negative comments, her mother wasn’t mad. Instead, she listened attentively and reminded Nilsa that there is no such thing as “normal” or “weird” food, and that different cultures have their own unique dishes that are loved and appreciated by those who grew up with them.
Nilsa’s mother also suggested making a fresh batch for Nilsa to bring to school the next day. “Then you can share it with your classmates and tell them sancocho tastes great, and that our family has been eating it for hundreds of years.

In recent times the use of advanced CCD technology to discover objects close to the Earth will in the future greatly reduce the chances of new comets being found with small telescopes.
11. What can be inferred about the CCD technology
A. It's similar to a telescope. B. It'll disappoint comet hunters.
C. It's spreading all over the world. D. It'll make comet hunters feel lucky.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. B
【解析】
【分析】本文是说明文。文章介绍了观测彗星的一些建议。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“This means that searches should be put on the western sky after evening light and on the eastern sky before morning light. ” (这就是说, 搜索应该放在黄昏后的西边天空和黎明前的东边天空)可知,清晨应观测东面的天空。故选D项。
【9题详解】

【10题详解】
推理判断题。第四段中的“Thus the smart comet hunter should make sure that morning activity receives as much if not more attention than any evening effort.(因此,聪明的彗星猎手应该确保早晨的活动即使不比晚上的活动得到更多的关注,也要一样多。)可知,早晚观测彗星应该投入一样的精力。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“In recent times, the use of advanced CCD technology to discover objects close to the Earth will in the future greatly reduce the chances of new comets being found with small telescopes.”

If you are of the “no regrets” type, you might think that all this regret is a recipe for unhappiness.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. A

根据第一段二三句“The song’s idea is attractive: that anyone can just declare what’s done is done and move on. Some take the declaration a step further and claim they have no regrets at all.(这首歌的想法很吸引人:任何人都可以宣布所做的事情已经完成,然后继续前进。有些人更进一步,声称自己完全不后悔。)”可知,如果我们采纳Frank Sinatra的观点,在与朋友争吵后,我们不会道歉,我们只会任凭争吵已发生,然后朝前看。故选D项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段后两句“To rid yourself of regrets doesn’t free you from shame or sorrow; it leads you to make the same mistakes again and again. To truly get over our guilt requires that we put regret in its proper place.(摆脱后悔并不能让你摆脱羞耻或悲伤;它会让你一次又一次犯同样的错误。要真正摆脱内疚,我们必须把后悔放在适当的位置。)”可知,作者并不赞同一个人永远都不后悔这一观点,相反他觉得,如果人永远都不后悔,它就会以此犯同样的错误,得不到任何提升和进步。故选C项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段最后一句“Then you would fast-forward to today and see how your relationship could be progressing instead of(然后你会快进到今天,看看你们的关系会如何进展而不是)”可知,instead of前后为转折关系,前文说关系需要有进展,而有进展的反面则是结束关系,或者关系破裂,故推测languishing 意为“关系结束”。故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段一二句“But regret doesn’t have to be left unmanaged. The trick is to acknowledge it and use it for learning and improvement.(但后悔不必被忽视。诀窍是承认它,然后将其用于学习和改进中。)”可知,作者建议读者利用好“后悔”这一举动来促进自我的进步,故选项A“Regret to become smarter-if you let it.(如果你愿意-后悔能让你变得更聪明)”符合文章主旨大意。故选A项。

Your great-grandmother taught your grandmother who then taught me.
