There’s a quote putting, “life doesn’t come with a manual (手册); it comes with a mother.” Thankfully, for Jabez and Christopher, their manual — or mother — found a creative way to keep her little boys’ fingers safe around a sewing machine. And as a result, she turned them into successful business owners.
Queenie Jenkins from Atlanta worked in the fashion industry and in her spare time, made matching scarves and skirts on her sewing machine at home. But once she became a mother with two energetic boys at her feet, her hobby became both difficult and dangerous. So, she turned the problem into a life lesson. Jenkins taught her boys how to use the sewing machine skilfully and safely. It wasn’t long before the boys were no longer green hands. As they grew older, they knew how to change the trousers into shorts for the summer months well.
When Jabez’s elementary school held a Career Day, he made 30 bow ties and 30 hair bows to sell. Within minutes, all of them had sold out. Then Jabez launched Kings and Gents Accessories, a small workshop, in 2018 with his brother. In addition to making and selling their bow ties, the brothers have also written a book and created a YouTube channel to host meetings for other potential “kidpreneurs (儿童企业家)”.
Now as a freshman in high school, Jabez said inspiring the next generation of business owners is an important part of their mission. “We just wanted to show younger kids how we got started, and how they can get started,” said Jabez, “We’re no different than any other kids.”
Jenkins has plenty to be proud of. Not only have her boys created a successful business, but they’ve gained valuable life skills along the way. “They’ve learned not to give up, to be more creative, and to be thinkers,” said Jenkins. “They don’t allow their fear to stop them.”
4. In which aspect do Jabez and Christopher benefit most from their mother’ sewing machine
A. Life skills. B. Safety rules.
C. Business plans. D. Cloth materials.
5. What do the underlined words “green hands” in paragraph 2 mean

6. Which of the following best describes the brothers’ impact on other potential kidpreneurs
A. Over-all. B. One-sided. C. Short-lived. D. Far-reaching.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Mama’s sewing machine
B. Business on the rocks
C. Sewing the seeds of success
D. Developing creative thinking

Our two-year investigation into caged (关在笼中) tigers in America sent us through 32 US states—with some truly shocking experiences. But as the deadline neared, I still needed a powerful and hopeful image.
When we began our reporting in 2017—Sharon, writing; me taking photos; and our son, NickRuggia, filming—more tigers likely lived in cages in the US than remained in the wild. The number ranged from 5,000 to 10,000, but without strict government oversight, no one knew for sure.
Roadside zoos that allowed tourists to take pictures of young tigers were the main cause of what’s been called a US tiger crisis (危机). Caged cats often ended up in the illegal wildlife trade. Young tigers, parted from their mothers at birth, were fed poorly and touched by hundreds of people. When they grew too big and dangerous to pet at around 12 weeks, young tigers were put on show, or simply disappeared.
While we documented the unpleasant part of this industry, we also wanted to show the good life these impressive animals could have. With two weeks left before my deadline, I headed to the Wild Animal Sanctuary near Denver, where well-cared cats walked freely in their habitat.
There I met Clay Daniel, and Enzo, three of 39 tigers rescued from an animal park in Oklahoma. These nearly grown cats raced beside our car, which I’d seen only in the wild. It was a hot July day and soon two of the cats jumped into a pool to cool off. The third rested beside them on the ground. I crossed the road to take a picture of them. Then quietly, I came up close, trying not to disturb (打扰) them. I had the shot.
8. Why did the author start her reporting
A. To dig out the dark truth of caged tigers. B. To explore the amazing land in the country.
C. To tell people that baby tigers are harmless. D. To share the happy moment during the trip.
9. What is the main cause of the US tiger crisis according to the text
A. Forest fires. B. Climate change. C. Roadside zoos. D. Water pollution.
10. What can we learn about these young tigers from paragraph 3
A. They prefer to stay indoors. B. They are badly treated.
C. They get used to the changes. D. They are traded legally.
11. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning the Wild Animal Sanctuary
A. To praise her family for their effort. B. To explain what the animals suffered.
C. To introduce a special kind of tigers. D. To show some tigers lead an easy life.
D
Laughter has long been known as a universal language that can bring people closer together. However, not many people know that it can also cause physical pain. “Hah! I’ve been fooled!” said Bob as he realized he had fallen victim to one of Alice’s practical jokes. Bob’s upper back is in pain where Alice patted and a burning sensation shoots up to his head.
Is laughter always good for our health A new study suggests that while laughing does cause the release of “happy hormones” in the brain, it can also lead to discomfort in the upper body. The study, led by Professor Wang from the Beijing-based Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, involved 300 healthy participants, aged between 20 and 45 years old. Half of them were exposed to laughter, while the other half were not.
The study found that those who were exposed to laughter reported feeling more social connection and happiness than those who were not. However, the laughing group also reported experiencing more discomfort in their upper backs and heads. “Laughter can bring people closer together, but it can also activate the stretch receptors (伸展感受器) in the diaphragm (横膈膜), causing discomfort,” said Wang in an interview.
Previous research has linked laughter to improved immunity (免疫力), lower blood pressure, and overall well-being. Laughter has also been shown to improve the function of mitochondria (线粒体), which are the energy factories inside cells. However, like any other physical activity, laughing too much can also cause tiredness and shortness of breath. “Moderation (适度) is key, that is, you can’t laugh too much.” said Professor Xu from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, who was not involved in the study. “While laughter is good for us, we should also be mindful of how much we laugh.”
The findings of the study suggest that the health benefits of laughter are not automatic; rather they require a balance between enjoyment and awareness of discomfort.
12. What’s the function of Bob’s experience in paragraph 1
A. To explain a concept. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To show a public concern. D. To describe a vivid story.
13. What can we learn from Professor Wang’s study
A. People are too happy to be exposed to laughter.
B. People are likely to feel discomfort while laughing.
C. Laughing more is beneficial to improving our health.
D. Laughing is the best way to become socially connected.
14. What does paragraph 4 mainly discuss
A. The health benefits of laughter.
B. The side effects of never laughing.
C. The importance of moderation in laughing.
D. The connection between laughter and discomfort.
15. What does the last paragraph suggest
A. Laughter can help us stay healthy automatically.
B. Laughter definitely goes hand in hand with discomfort.
C. We should laugh more to keep ourselves joyful and healthy.
D. It’s necessary for us to strike a balance between laughter and comfort.

We usually divide a year into four seasons. However in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, there are five seasons — spring, summer, late summer, fall, and winter. Each of the five has many features which guide us to change our habits to keep the balance between our body and the external environment.
Winter in TCM
The ancient Chinese believed that winter is the Yin “阴” season in nature. ___16___ So, winter is the time of year to reflect on health, save strength and regain energy, preparing ourselves for the start of new life in the spring. Different aspects of our lives like exercise, diet and emotions can influence our health and, therefore, our well-being in winter.
___17___
In TCM theory, winter is a season to feed ourselves both spiritually and physically. Activities in the season have a turn inwards. For example, we can do more writing, reading and other soul-nourishing (滋养灵魂的) activities. Although energetic exercise should be avoided, it’s important to keep our body healthy with gentle exercise, especially outdoor activities, in which we can get fresh air and sunlight. In addition, we should also go to bed earlier to save more energy. ___18___
Foods for winter
The principle of harmony between what we eat and the season is based on hundreds of years of experience in TCM. It suggests that we embrace locally-grown and seasonable foods, which is the way nature intends us to eat. During the winter, there are many foods beneficial to us. ___19___ — pumpkins, potatoes, root vegetables, winter greens, carrots, cabbage, mushrooms, and pears. Besides, hot soup, whole grains and roasted nuts also offer nourishment to feed the body in cold winter months. But always remember, moderation in all things is important.
Moods in winter
According to TCM theory, stress, depression and unresolved anger can also weaken our immune system, allowing external factors to affect our body in winter. ___20___ Meditation (冥想) and breathing techniques are particularly helpful, especially in relieving stress. TCM also offers a variety of treatments such as massage (按摩) and herbal formulas to manage our moods.
A. Activities in winter
B. Exercises in winter
C. Most of them naturally grow in this season
D. It is inactive, cold and dark, which makes us slow down.
E. If you exercise properly in winter, you can enjoy yourself.
F. Everyone can enjoy winter if they live and exercise appropriately.
G. So keeping a good mood is especially important in this cold season.

On a bitterly cold January day, I saw Bobby in my fourth-grade classroom for the first time. He was wearing worn-out shirt and jeans, obviously too small. One of his shoes was missing a lace, flopping (移动) up and down when he walked. He looked so disgusting that nobody would treat him as a normal child.
Bobby’s behavior was strange too. His normal tone of voice was a yell. He never made eye contact with anyone, and made his comments continuously during class.
Besides, Bobby’s academic skills were non-existent. He couldn’t read or write, not even the letters of the alphabet.
I thought Bobby should belong in a classroom that taught basic social skills. I checked his records and was shocked to learn that his IQ was normal. The school counselor (辅导顾问) told me that Bobby was a lot closer to normal than his mother was. He had been placed in Children’s Welfare Home for the first three years of his life before he was returned to his mother. They had moved to a different town at least once a year. Bobby’s intelligence was normal, so he would remain in my classroom.
I hated it but had to accept his being in my class. I had never taught someone like Bobby before. It was a struggle to even plan lessons for him. I took pride in being a good teacher, and I was disgusted with myself for not liking him and not wanting him in my class. One day, Bobby came into the classroom with his shirt torn and his nose bloodied. He had been jumped on by a group of my students. Bobby sat down and opened his book, pretending nothing had happened. Blood and tears dropped onto the pages. I sent Bobby to the nurse and scolded (训斥,责骂) those students angrily. I yelled that they ought to be ashamed of themselves for not liking him just because he acted strangely. His being different was even more reason to treat him kindly.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
That incident changed how I felt about Bobby.

It was amazing to see the change in Bobby that resulted from the new clothes and extra attention.

A. Awkward learners. B. Attractive experts.
C. Admirable pioneers. D. Amazing artists.
6. Which of the following best describes the brothers’ impact on other potential kidpreneurs
A. Over-all. B. One-sided. C. Short-lived. D. Far-reaching.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Mama’s sewing machine
B. Business on the rocks
C. Sewing the seeds of success
D. Developing creative thinking
A 5. A 6. D 7. C

根据第一段“Thankfully, for Jabez and Christopher, their manual — or mother — found a creative way to keep her little boys’ fingers safe around a sewing machine. And as a result, she turned them into successful business owners. 故选A。
根据第二段中“Jenkins taught her boys how to use the sewing machine skilfully and safely.(Jenkins教她的孩子们如何熟练安全地使用缝纫机。)”以及“As they grew older, they knew how to change the trousers into shorts for the summer months well. (随着年龄的增长,他们很清楚如何在夏天把裤子换成短裤)”可知,在母亲的教导下,可以熟练安全地使用缝纫机,随着年龄的增长,他们知道如何在夏天把裤子改成短裤;由此可知,划线词所在句“It wasn’t long before the boys were no longer green hands.(没过多久,男孩们就不再是green hands)”指的是不久孩子们就能熟练安全地使用缝纫机,短语“green hands”表示“生手”,与awkward learners意义相近。故选A。
根据第三段中“In addition to making and selling their bow ties, the brothers have also written a book and created a YouTube channel to host meetings for other potential “kidpreneurs (儿童企业家)”.(除了制作和销售他们的领结,兄弟俩还写了一本书,并创建了一个YouTube频道,为其他潜在的‘儿童企业家’举办会议)”以及第四段“Now as a freshman in high school, Jabez said inspiring the next generation of business owners is an important part of their mission. “We just wanted to show younger kids how we got started, and how they can get started,” said Jabez, “We’re no different than any other kids.”(现在还是一名高中新生的Jabez说,激励下一代企业主是他们使命的重要组成部分。
根据第一段“There’s a quote putting, “life doesn’t come with a manual (手册); it comes with a mother.” Thankfully, for Jabez and Christopher, their manual — or mother — found a creative way to keep her little boys’ fingers safe around a sewing machine. And as a result, she turned them into successful business owners.

There I met Clay, Daniel, and Enzo, three of 39 tigers rescued from an animal park in Oklahoma.

The findings of the study suggest that the health benefits of laughter are not automatic; rather, they require a balance between enjoyment and awareness of discomfort.
B The side effects of never laughing.
B 13. B 14. C 15. D

We usually divide a year into four seasons. However, in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, there are five seasons — spring, summer, late summer, fall, and winter.
G. So, keeping a good mood is especially important in this cold season.

Bobby’s behavior was strange, too.

That incident changed how I felt about Bobby. Witnessing a little boy in desperate need of care and help, I realized not only should a teacher teach academics but also meet the needs of the students! I bought Bobby some nice clothes, with which he wouldn’t be teased any more. Thrilled and grateful, he marveled, “Thanks, Miss!” with glittering tears in his eyes like stars. A surge of being trusted wrapped me, and I offered to help him with his homework before school.
It was amazing to see the change in Bobby that resulted from the new clothes and extra attention. Coming out of his shell, he started making brief eye contact with me and performed properly, through which I found he really was a likeable child. I no longer dreaded going to work, and even looked forward to seeing him coming down the hallway in the morning. Afterwards, as my attitude toward him changed, so did the other students. They stopped picking on him and included him as a part of the group. Just give more attention and love. Every child deserves a chance to change.
