I was 68 when I first stepped on stage as a standup comedian in 2003. I’d never set foot in a comedy club before. I’ve always been a performer - I’ve worked as a singer, actor and musician - but all that came to an end after 9/11. I live in New York, and we watched the twin towers fall from my apartment building. For a year afterwards, nobody wanted to go out or be entertained.
It was then that I started to think about comedy. I realised people needed to laugh, to enjoy themselves again, and thought that with a little training I could do it. I took a few classes, tried to work out a routine, and finally plucked up the courage to get up on stage. That first time was terrifying. I had no idea what the audience would make of me.
In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It’s hard enough to break through as a woman, even harder as someone old enough to be their grandmother. As I stepped on stage that first time, people laughed nervously. They were clearly surprised to see me. I introduced myself, stated my age and tried my first joke. There was silence. But by the time I got to the third line, people were properly laughing, I was addicted.
Now my sets differ. I might be on stage for 10 minutes in front of a dozen people, or my one-woman show is a full hour in front of a crowd of 100. Even today, I’m nervous before I step out. My first line is, “Hello, everybody. I’m 88 and three-quarters years old. I’m telling you that in case I don’t make it all the way through the show.” Then people laugh and I relax.
After a show, people young and old come up to me, saying what an inspiration I am. They say they want to be as active as me when they reach my age. I’m pleased I can show that as an older person you don’t need to take a back seat in life.
I’ve no intention of stopping comedy. I’m taking all these pills, trying to stay alive, and I hope to still be performing when I’m 100. My goal is to still be up there making people laugh. It’s hard work, but it stops me being bored. I’d only be playing golf otherwise

6. How has the writer made progress since her first performance
A. She now performs before larger audiences
B. She no longer feels nervous before performances
C. She remains on the stage for a longer time

7. Which of the following statements would the writer agree with
A. Age is just a number
B. Advancing years bring greater wisdom
C. Old age means a chance to sit back
D. Being elderly means you have to slow down
C
A key part of starting to exercise is choosing when to work out. Morning, afternoon, or evening: Which time is best Scientists have studied this dilemma extensively.
For beginners, morning workouts are often the most frightening. Trading a cozy, nurturing bed for an unpleasant, unforgiving fitness center can be a rude awakening to say the least. But morning workouts have their advantages. Challenging the body triggers the release of endorphins (内啡肽), which can make you more productive and attentive at work. Moreover, for those who struggle to fall asleep at night, habitual morning exercise may help to reset their circadian rhythms, the internal, biological processes that regulate the 24-hour sleep-wake cycle.
But early exercisers may not be able to achieve peak performance. Stiffer muscles, fewer stored energy reserves from overnight fasting, and a slightly cooler body temperature in the morning add up to disturb exercise output. Therefore, more enthusiastic exercisers might prefer working out in the afternoon. A small, 12-week study focusing on pre-diabetic and diabetic men found that afternoon training produced slightly more beneficial metabolic (新陈代谢的) effects and resulted in a little more fat loss compared to morning training.
Finally, some folks may decide to work out later in the evening. Studies centered around this time of day tend to focus on whether or not nightly exercise negatively impacts sleep quality. Gathered research suggests it does not and, instead, actually improves sleep. However. Intense exercise performed within an hour of one’s bedtime absolutely will make it more difficult to fall asleep. For this reason, most exercise experts recommend at least 90 minutes of downtime between the conclusion of an exercise session and attempting to fall asleep.
Whether morning, afternoon, or evening, it is recommended if exercise timing remains somewhat consistent, research has found. For example, a competitive marathon runner will exhibit the best performance when his/her exercise training sessions occur at the same time-of-day as the marathon. Still, it is perfectly fine to mix up your workout times to fit with your schedule. The average person need not worry over when to work out just because of some slight bodily differences based on time-of-day.
8. Which of the following can benefit a man with sleeping disorder
A. Sleeping immediately after workouts.
B. Reducing the exercise time by at least 90 minutes.
C. Regular workouts between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.
D. Exercise between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
9. Which of the following is right for diabetic men
A. It is hard to lose weight in the morning.
B. Exercise may be more efficient in the afternoon.
C. Diabetic men are easy to lose more fat.
D. Morning exercise produces harmful metabolic effects.
10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. It’s good to exercise at the same time every day.
B. A marathon runner will perform best in the training.
C. The average person varies slightly in body.
D. It is fine to exercise ahead of schedule.
11 Which one is the most suitable title
A. Exercise: A dilemma.
B. AM or PM: When is the best time to exercise
C. Exercise timing should remain consistent.
D. The advantage of exercise.

Ancient builders across the world created structures that are still standing today, thousands of years later. Roman engineers built thick concrete sea barriers, for example. And Chinese builders raised walls against invaders. But there are many recent structures that are already starting to fail. The concrete that makes up much of our modern world lasts around 50 to 100 years.
A growing number of scientists have been studying materials from long ago. They are breaking apart pieces of buildings and reading historical texts hoping to learn how they have stood for thousands of years. The research has turned up a surprising list of materials that were mixed into old buildings. They include tree bark, volcanic ash, rice, beer and even urine (尿液). These unexpected materials could have the ability to get stronger over time and “heal” cracks when they form.
Figuring out how to copy these features could have real impacts today. While our modern concrete has the strength to hold up very tall buildings and heavy infrastructure (基础结构), it cannot compete with the endurance of these ancient materials. With the rising threats of climate change, there is a growing call to make construction more sustainable. A recent UN report estimates that the built environment is responsible for more than a third of carbon dioxide emissions worldwide. Cement (水泥) production alone makes up more than 7 percent of those emissions.
Is ancient Roman concrete better In places where seawater has been hitting structures for ages, you will find concrete “basically the way it was when it was poured 2,000 years ago,” said John Oleson, an archaeologist at the University of Victoria in Canada.
Most modern concrete starts with Portland cement, a powder made by heating limestone (石灰岩) and clay to super-high temperatures and breaking them up. That cement is mixed with water to create a paste. Then, materials like rock and gravel are added. Records from ancient builders show the Roman process was similar. The ancient builders mixed materials like burnt limestone and volcanic sand with water and rocks, creating chemical reactions to tie everything together.
Now, scientists think they have found an important reason why some Roman concrete has held up structures for thousands of years. The ancient material has an unusual power to repair itself. Exactly how is not yet clear, so scientists are starting to find reasons why.
12. What is the purpose of the comparison in Paragraph 1
A. To introduce a topic. B. To list a motivation.
C. To give a definition. D. To present an argument.
13. Which aspect of ancient Roman building materials surprises scientists
A. Their necessary ingredients. B. Their processing procedure.
C. Their amazing sustainability. D. Their high-end technology.
14. According to the passage, ________ remains a mystery.
A. what made up those ancient Roman materials
B. where the ancient Roman materials were produced
C. how those ancient Roman materials were transported
D. why the ancient Roman materials healed automatically
15. Where is the text probably from
A. A travel brochure. B. A science fiction.
C. An architecture essay. D. An environment report.

Ollie Simmons was good at maths, but Ruby Riley wasn’t. Well, Ruby didn’t think she was. She sat next to Ollie and so she just copied him. This was the best way she had found to do maths and she didn’t have to think at all.
One day the teacher said, “We will be having a maths test after lunch.” Ruby felt there were butterflies in the stomach. “Can I copy off you ” she whispered to Ollie. Ollie thought for a minute. “What will you give me ” he whispered back. Ruby showed Ollie a stone she had. It was round and smooth and the colour of the sea. “OK!” he said, “Give me the stone, and then you can copy my answers.” Ollie got full marks in the maths test and so did Ruby. Their names went on the top of the maths champion chart.
Every week there was a maths test and every week Ollie and Ruby got full marks together. Ollie had to share the top place with Ruby, but it was worth it. He had a torch, a key chain, a golf ball and a gift box!
One day, there was a maths test again. This time, Ruby picked a watch, thinking everything would go as usual—Ollie would let her copy and they would be on the top of the chart together again. But she was wrong. The headmaster came into Ruby’s class. “I want to see Ollie Simmons,” she said. Ollie was gone for a long time. Then the door opened. It was the headmaster again. “Ruby Riley,” she said, “Come with me, please.” Ruby felt like a bird in a cage—there was no way to escape. The headmaster told Ruby that every lunchtime for five weeks she had to do maths. “You have to learn to think for yourself,” she said. “And Ollie has to learn a lesson, too. He’s going to teach you.”

11. Which one is the most suitable title

【答案】12. A 13. A 14. D 15. C

The vast majority of parents expect their children to grow up to be healthy, happy, and productive members of society. ____16____ If we don’t give parenting everything we’ve got, our kids will wind up unemployed, living in our basements, and there will be no one to blame but ourselves. That’s what I like to call the “perfect parent myth”.
The standards of perfection for parents these days are extremely high. Perfect parenting expectations begin with a drug free natural birth. Once our young are born we must breastfeed each baby for years. If we can’t breasted, we must at least feed on demand. ____17____ Let’s also not forget to organize our children’s days so they are engaged in educational pursuits in case they fall behind the curve (弯道). We must be involved in every aspect of our children’s schools. There is no free time for the perfect parent. ____18____
These standards are unreasonable. They’re also crazy. Parents can’t be perfect. Why Because we’re human and so are our children. ____19____They are predictable and when they are unruly we can shut them down. Parenting is nothing like that.
____20____But, by the parent being less than perfect, the child will need to adapt and develop skills to overcome little disappointments. There is flexibility and room for real-life mistakes and limitations to our parenting abilities.
A. We must make our own baby food.
B. They are pushing themselves too far.
C. Robots would be much easier to parent.
D. There is only unlimited devotion to our children.
E. A good enough parent meets the needs of their children.
F. Parents have no enough time to live up to these high standards.
G. To meet those goals parents are told that they must spare no effort.
【答案】16. G 17. A 18. D 19. C 20. E
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇议论文,人们对于完美的父母有很多高标准,但作者认为父母没有时间去达到那些高标准,现实生活中的错误和养育孩子的能力是有弹性和空间的。
【16题详解】
根据前一句“The vast majority of parents expect their children to grow up to be healthy, happy, and productive members of society.(绝大多数父母希望他们的孩子成长为健康、快乐和对社会有贡献的成员)”并结合空后一句“If we don’t give parenting everything we’ve got, our kids will wind up unemployed, living in our basements, and there will be no one to blame but ourselves.(如果我们不尽一切努力养育孩子,我们的孩子最终会失业,住在我们的地下室里,那就只能怪我们自己了)”可知,父母对孩子有很多期望,如果孩子最后没有成功就只能怪父母,所以推测空处讲述父母为了让孩子成功应该奉献一切,G项“为了达到这些目标,父母们被告知必须不遗余力。”承上启下,G项中的these goals呼应前一句中“to be healthy, happy, and productive members of society”,故选G项。
【17题详解】
结合空前两句“Once our young are born we must breastfeed each baby for years. If we can’t breasted, we must at least feed on demand.(一旦我们的孩子出生,我们必须多年母乳喂养每个孩子。如果我们不能哺乳,我们至少得根据需要喂养)”可知,此处是讲述孩子喂养方面对父母的高标准,A项“我们必须自己做婴儿食品。”符合语境。故选A项。
空前“They are predictable and when they are unruly we can shut them down. Parenting is nothing like that(他们是可以预测的。当他们是不受控制的时候,我们可以关闭他们。养育子女无法比的上那个)”根据下文内容,在叙述机器人的优点,结合选项,C选项:机器人比养育子女更容易。且robots与下文they相呼应。使they指代明确。故选C。
【20题详解】
根据空后一句“But, by the parent being less than perfect, the child will need to adapt and develop skills to overcome little disappointments.(但是,如果父母不够完美,孩子将需要适应和发展技能,以克服小失望)”可知,空处与下文是转折关系,应是描述完美父母的情况,E项“一个好的父亲或母亲能够满足孩子的需要。”符合语境。故选E项。
