81-year-old Harry Smith of Port St. Lucie, Florida takes his 9-year-old dog Sarah Jane for a walk around the lake across the street from his house twice a day, every day. Smith, who uses an electric wheelchair to get around, was on one of his regular walks earlier this month when something out of the ordinary happened. The left wheel of his wheelchair got stuck in some loose mud (泥土), and as he tried to reverse (倒车)out of it, his wheelchair lost balance. He ended up turning over his wheelchair and rolling down the bank into the lake.
Sensing her owner was in trouble, Sarah Jane began barking (吠叫)loudly as Smith struggled to keep his head above the water. Her continuous barking caught the attention of two neighbors working in their driveway across the street, who rushed over to see what was wrong.
One of those men was Edward Shuling, who said in the beginning he thought the dog might have gotten into a fight with a crocodile (鳄鱼), before he saw Smith's head sticking out of the water.“Immediately I just jumped in,”Shuling told TCPalm.“It's just a natural reaction.”A second neighbor, Aby“Jacob”Chacko, was following closely behind and happened to spot Officer Adam Doty on his way down to the water. Together, the three men pulled Smith out of the water and back to safety, much to his—and Sarah Jane's—relief.
With no serious injuries, Smith was cleared to go home but his electric wheelchair was no longer working due to water damage. And in a post showing the sweet moment by the Port St. Lucie Police Department, Officer Doty and Sarah Jane, of course, helped Smith get back to his house.“We are thankful to Mr. Smith's dog and the two passers-by that helped save his life!”the post reads.
4. What caused the accident
A. The wheelchair tripped over a dog. B. Harry Smith tried to move closer to the bank.

5. What did Edward Shuling think was happening at first
A. A dog was struggling with a crocodile. B. A man was being run after by a dog.
C. A dog was warning people of a crocodile. D. A man was fighting with a crocodile.

B. Sarah Jane was praised by the post for what she did.
C. Harry Smith was seriously injured in the accident.
D. The police looked into the case and found out the reason.
7. Which of the following sayings agrees with the story
A. Every dog has its day. B. A barking dog does not bite.
C. A man's best friend is his dog. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

He’s as big as a small golden dog and covered with scales (鳞片). He is the pangolin (穿山甲), an endangered animal.
According to the wildlife trade monitoring organization Traffic, about one million pangolins were killed from 2000 through 2013, mainly for their scales, which are used in medicine. Pangolins are sensitive creatures and picky eaters that only eat certain species of ants, a diet that’s very difficult to copy in the food chain.
“In the last decade, there’s been a huge growth trade in pangolins between continents, especially their scales,” says Dan Challender, chair of the pangolin specialist group. Previously, most pangolin killing happened within Asia, he says. This shift means that Asian pangolins are becoming difficult to find but that the value of the scales makes it worth the extra cost to take pangolins from Africa to Asia secretly.
All eight species of pangolins, four in Africa and four in Asia, are in danger of extinction due to the illegal trade. International trade in the four species of Asian pangolins has been banned since 2000. In the past few years, a ban on international commercial trade in all eight species has gone into effect. It was voted by 183 governments that are parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which is in charge of cross-border trade in wild animals and their parts.
Pangolins are eaten as bushmeat in western and central Africa and by some local groups in South and Southeast Asia. Their parts also are used in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa as traditional medicine. Typically dried, ground into powder, and put into pills, pangolin scales are used in a range of traditional medicines to help mothers who have given birth to babies to recover. But they are now endangered. Perhaps no pangolins can be seen when our next generation grow up.
8. What do you know about pangolins from Paragraph 2
A. Their meat is very delicious.
B. Their scales are of great value.
C. They are smaller than young dogs.
D. They are on the top of the food chain.
9. Why are pangolins brought from Africa to Asia
A. Pangolins are cheaper in Africa.
B. No laws protect pangolins in Africa.
C. People in Asia can really save pangolins.
D. Pangolins have sharply decreased in numbers in Asia.
10. What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us
A. Pangolins have many different species.
B. The bans on pangolin trade are ineffective.
C. People used to take advantage of pangolins in different ways.
D. Governments have tried to contribute to the protection of pangolins.
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards pangolins’ future
A. Positive. B. Uncaring. C. Concerned. D. Confident.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has hit the headlines in recent months, particularly since the launch of ChatGPT in November. The chatbot can not only answer a broad range of questions, but also create original poems and stories.
Japan’s first fully AI-created comic, Cyberpunk: Peach John, was released on March 9 by Shinchosha, a major publishing house.
The comic is based on the futuristic imagination of the author, whose pen name is Rootport. It describes how the Japanese folklore (民间传说) hero Momotaro, who is said to have been born from a giant peach, lives in a dystopian (反乌托邦的) future.
All the fancy futuristic objects and creatures in the book, however, were designed and created by Midjourney along with other popular online image-generation AI tools such as Stable Diffusion and DALL-E 2.
Unlike traditional comic volumes which are usually black-and-white and short in length, Cyberpunk: Peach John comes in full color and spans more than 100 pages. A work of this length would normally take over a year to complete by even authors who are familiar with comic creation. However, with AI creation, it took the writer a surprisingly short period — only six weeks — to finish the whole work.
Despite gaining widespread attention as the first fully AI-drawn comic in Japan the work has also raised some questions and concern as well. According to Gulf News and CNN, some people are worried that AI technology will threaten jobs and copyright ownership in the nation’s thriving comic book industry, as well as creativity and artistic value.
One Twitter user described the project as “an absolute insult (侮辱) to comic and comic artists everywhere.” Another wrote: “Weird to publish a comic by AI when your country has some of the most talented artists in existence.”
But Rootport has insisted that his comic book should be considered a work of art. “AI cannot yet create a perfect work on its own. Human assistance is essential,” he said.
12. Who is the writer of the comic, Cyberpunk: Peach John
A. Shinchosha. B. Rootport. C. Momotaro. D. Midjourney.
13. Which of the following is true
A. The comic book is colorful and extremely time-saving in creation.
B. AI technology will definitely threaten jobs and copyright ownership.
C. Japan has the most talented comic artists in the world.
D. The comic book is considered a work of art.
14. What’s people’s attitude towards the AI-drawn comic in the text
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Unconcerned. D. Neutral.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. AI-drawn comics have advantages over traditional ones.
B. AI-drawn comics have become a new trend in Japan.
C. Japan released its first fully AI-created comic.
D. People have different opinions on the first AI-created comic.

Tom appeared in front of the house with a can of paint and a big brush. He was going to paint Aunt Poly's fence as he was asked to. A deep sadness settled upon his heart. The fence was long and tall. He dipped the brush into the can and moved it along the first plank unwillingly. He did it again and again. The painted part was very small but the whole fence was endless. He felt tired and sleepy and stopped painting.
Just then Tom heard a noise. He recognized it easily. It came from one of his schoolmates, Ben, who would make strange noises as he ate. Ben was walking by and eating an apple. At that moment, a wonderful idea came to Tom and he felt energized. He wanted first to attract Ben's interest and then let Ben work for him. If other boys passed by, he would do the same to them.“Maybe they even need to give me something for getting the chance to show their ability,”he thought.
He quickly took his brush and painted quietly. Ben saw Tom, walked up to him and greeted him with a wide smile.
Continuing with his painting, Tom intentionally did not look at Ben. He wished for his plan to work and therefore, he did not turn from his work. Tom moved his brush gently and slowly, all the while ignoring Ben. Ben went closer and taunted Tom with sarcasm,“Tom, it's unfortunate that you have work to do. I'm going swimming. Don’t you wish you could go too ”
Tom turned suddenly. “Oh, Ben. I didn't see you. What do you mean by‘unfortunate’ It may be work but it may not be.”
“Do you mean that you enjoy it ” Ben asked, feeling puzzled.
“Of course! How often do we get the chance to be in charge of painting a whole fence ”said Tom. Moving his brush and stepping away, Tom looked at the end result proudly.

A. Pangolins are cheaper in Africa.
B. No laws protect pangolins in Africa.
C People in Asia can really save pangolins.
D. Pangolins have sharply decreased in numbers in Asia.
10. What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us
A. Pangolins have many different species.
B. The bans on pangolin trade are ineffective.

Despite gaining widespread attention as the first fully AI-drawn comic in Japan, the work has also raised some questions and concern as well.
B AI technology will definitely threaten jobs and copyright ownership.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Tom's idea took effect. Ben stopped eating his apple, watched Tom and became more and more interested. He then begged Tom to allow him to paint the fence. He even offered Tom his half-eaten apple. Tom flatly refused,“Aunt Poly wants this main fence to be perfect. If it was the fence behind the house, you could help, but this main fence along the street must be done very carefully. Everyone can see it. There is not one boy in a thousand who can do it well.”
At last, Ben persuaded Tom into letting him paint the fence. Tom handed the brush to Ben“reluctantly”and sat under a tree to watch Ben do the work for him. Other boys came along and stopped to laugh, but eventually, like Ben, they wanted to paint the fence too. Tom was excited. Each boy gave some sort of payment to work. By then, Tom's plan had become very fruitful. The whole fence was painted nicely without Tom sweating a bit and on top of that, he even had some earnings.
