Norwegian playwright and author Jon Fosse has just been awarded the 2023 Nobel prize in Literature for his “innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable”.
The Swedish Academy credit s Fosse as “one of the most widely performed playwrights in the world”, although the 64 -year-old originally made his name as a novelist, beginning with Red, Black in 1983. He has since written many works of prose and poetry. “His literary works, spanning a variety of genres(体裁), consist of about 40 plays and a wealth of novels, poetry collections, essays, children’s books and translations,” said Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel committee for Literature.
Jon Fosse draws inspiration from his rural living environment and personal struggles which have deeply influenced his distinctive writing style. Growing up in a small coastal village, Fosse was lost in the beauty of nature and the vastness of the sea, which filled him with a sense of solitude and introspection(内省) that is reflected in his works. Fosse’s writing discussed themes of loneliness, longing, and the search for meaning in life. Additionally, his battles with depression have enabled him to explore the depths of human emotions and existential despair.
“He touches you so deeply when you read his works,” said Anders Olsson. “What is special about him is the closeness in his writing. It touches your deepest feelings -anxieties, insecurities, questions of life and death -which are things that every human being actually faces from the very beginning. In that sense I think he reaches very far and there is a sort of a universal impact of everything that he writes - it has appeal to this basic humanity.”
Fosse is the first-ever winner of the award writing in Nynorsk, one of the two official languages of Norwegian, but only used by just 10% of the population. As The Guardian writes, “Many Nynorsk speakers see Fosse ‘as a kind of national hero’ for his championing of the language.” Fosse’s recognition on a global stage contributes to the visibility of Nynorsk as a written standard. It will attract more attention to Nynorsk literature, inspire and encourage Nynorsk speakers to continue preserving and highlighting their linguistic(语言的) heritage.
4. What can best describe Jon Fosse’s writing life
A. Productive. B. Historical. C. Unrecognized. D. Unfulfilling.
5. What is Para.3 mainly about
A. Fosse’s education background. B. Fosse’s growing environment.
C. Main reasons for Fosse’s writing style. D. Reflection on Fosse’s personal struggles.
6. What is special about Fosse’ works according to Anders Olsson
A. They explore the meaning of rural life. B. They appeal to young people especially.
C. They access the core of human emotions. D. They show bond between human and nature.
7. Why was Fosse viewed as “a kind of national hero”
A. He resets writing standards of Nynorsk. B. He inspires the preservation of Nynorsk.
C. He promotes interaction across cultures. D. He champions Nynorsk as a global language.

Wildfires, when allowed to burn in areas without human development, can contribute to the restoration of the surrounding watershed(集水区), renewal of the soil, and resetting the clock for the ecosystem.
Many forests cannot sustain themselves without natural wildfire, including pine barrens, lodgepole pine forests and many more. These forests require canopy fires, which primarily affect the upper layer of plants in a forest, to reproduce because the trees in the forest are adapted to only produce seeds following a major fire event. Hence, fires can be restorative for the forest, and without them many of these forest types would decline on the landscape. How is a fire restorative for the watershed It restores in many ways including, but not limited to, improving water quality, offering habitat for insects that serve as food for fish, promoting the growth of fire adapted plants, etc... Not to mention renewal of the soil chemistry which is vital to the forest and the watershed.(My attitude is that of someone who has studied wildfire and streams since the disastrous 1988 Yellowstone wildfires.) The science backs up how natural wildfire can be favorable through research publication after publication.
It’s like “resetting the clock” on the ecosystem, allowing it to smoothly all over again for another 200 years. By the way, a canopy fire such as Yellowstone in 1988 also results in the reproduction of younger trees after fire which act to stop the spread and progress of a potentially destructive wildfire immediately. Without it, future wildfires are very likely to become bigger and bigger.
The bottom line is that we may need today’s natural wildfires on our forested landscape to prevent more serious fire events in the future. That lesson was learned in 1988 Yellowstone wildfires which was a year of disastrous large-scale fires despite more than 50 years of thorough and tight fire monitoring.
8. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Seeds. B. Wildfires. C. Trees. D. Ecosystems.
9. What is the function of younger trees after wildfires
A. Making wildfires easier to be spotted. B. Reducing occurring rates of wildfires.
C. Stopping a major wildfire in its tracks. D. Preventing potential wildfires completely.
10. What can be learned from the 1988 Yellowstone wildfires
A. We should accept wildlife on its own terms. B. Fire monitoring in Yellowstone was successful.
C. Natural fires may reduce the risk of larger ones. D. Serious wildfires are caused by human activities.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The beneficial effects of wildfires. B. Impacts of wildfires on development.
C. The necessity of watershed preservation. D. Measures to prevent large-scale wildfires.
B 9. C 10. C 11. A

ChatGPT--a conversational language model which was launched in November and is free and simple to use -- can swiftly produce poems, math equations or essays on topics, bringing concern that students will misuse the technology. And because it doesn’t copy an existing text, there is no easy way to be certain whether a human or a bot wrote the answer.
As many educators began to worry about whether students may use ChatGPT to generate papers, Edward Tian had an idea. The 22-year-old student, who studies computer science and journalism, decided to build an app to detect whether a text- was human-written or AI-written.
Over a few days in a Toronto coffee shop during winter break, he got to work. On Jan. 2, he launched’ GPTZero. It analyzes different properties of a text for its “perplexity”, which is the randomness of the text, and the “burstiness”, which is the variation of the text over time. So, a human-written text would have high perplexity, something very unfamiliar to an Al model, and exhibit properties of burstiness, which are non-common items that appear in random clusters (集 群), rather than being uniformly distributed.
Tian said he expected a few dozen people to ever try it. But he woke up the next morning stunned by the response. He has even heard from people all over the world— many of them are teachers or college admissions officers, Many people have subscribed for updates from Tian as he works to improve the technology.
The quick response to Tian’s effort highlighted the breakneck pace at which technology is changing classrooms, teaching, and the ways that people define and understand learning. Tian believed everyone deserved to reap the benefits of Al, but safeguards were needed to make sure new technologies were not abused.
Tian said it would be sad if, years from now, people mostly relied on AI and writing became far more uniform. “There’s something implicitly(含蓄地) beautiful in human prose,” he said, “that computers can never copy.”
12. Why did Edward Tian create GPTZero
A. To predict abuse of ChatGPT.
B. To analyse properties of texts.
C. To relieve educators of anxiety.
D. To recognize Al-generated texts.
13. What features do human-written texts share
A. They are random and varied.
B. They are plain and unfamiliar.
C. They are common and diverse.
D. They are uniform and complex.
14. What does the public think of Tian’s invention
A. It is safely guarded.
B. It is highly anticipated.
C. It is quickly updated.
D. It is thoroughly developed.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Human will win the competition against AI.
B. Most people will benefit from AI in the future.
C. Writing will become more common than before.
D. There is incomparable charm in Human writings.
D 13. A 14. B 15. D

One way is approaching whatever task is at hand by searching for the things that you didn't see in the first time around. First, recognize that everything is always changing.___18___Second, remove judgment from the experience, if possible, and just observe what's new. For example, look for the ways in which a change in your neighborhood is interesting or exciting.
___19___That could mean removing sugar, coffee, a certain kind of media from your life for a specified time. Once the break is over, that same thing will have more of its former interest or excitement._____20_____So is true that novelty is fun, but given enough of a break in between, repeated experiences regain that initial excitement.
A. Repeated experiences like this are valuable.
B. Visiting a new country brings fresh experience.
C. Coffee will never taste better if you quit it for a month.
D. But the piece of art that made me cry was a familiar one.

G. Another way is changing your routine and taking a break of some kind.
D 17. E 18. F 19. G 20. C
根据空前“Today I visited San Francisco’s modern-art museum. I was there to see a new exhibit about spaceflight.” 尤其是空后“I like to “visit” this particular painting every time I go to the museum not only because it evokes(唤起)strong feelings”我每次去博物馆都喜欢“参观”这幅画,不仅因为它能唤起强烈的感情......。 这对应了D项中的cry(哭)。
根据空前的“Some of that enjoyment comes from the feeling of familiarity of course.” 以及空后“There’s always plenty more to see, hear, taste, smell, feel, of understand the second or third time around. But how do you discover the exciting new thing in the familiar ”可知,在熟悉的事物中还有很多东西要去看,去听,去尝,去闻,去感觉,去理解。 E(But it also comes from noticing new things in what is so familiar)但也来自于在如此熟悉的事物中发现新事物,可知E项符合题意,故选E。
根据空前的 “One way is approaching whatever task is at hand by searching for the things that you didn't see in the first time around. First, recognize that everything is always changing.” 以及空后的“remove, judgment from the experience, if possible ,and just observe what's new.”
上一段“One way is approaching whatever task is at hand by searching for the things that you didn't see in the first time around. ” 一种方法是通过寻找你第一次没有看到的东西.....那么下一段就要说明“另一种方法...... ”分析选项可知G项(Another way is changing your routine and taking a break of some kind)就有对应的 “Another way...”。本空格后“That could mean removing sugar, coffee, a certain kind of media from your life for a specified time. Once the break is over, that same thing will have more of its former interest or excitement.”
根据本空前的“That could mean removing sugar, coffee, a certain kind of media from your life for a specified time. Once the break is over, that same thing will have more of its former interest or excitement.”

Norwegian playwright and author Jon Fosse has just been awarded the 2023 Nobel prize in Literature for his “innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable”

C Natural fires may reduce the risk of larger ones. D. Serious wildfires are caused by human activities.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The beneficial effects of wildfires. B. Impacts of wildfires on development.
C. The necessity of watershed preservation. D. Measures to prevent large-scale wildfires.
