Najib is an Afghan who grew up in Iran. He led a tough life. When he found his children would be in the same situation, his family initially returned to Afghanistan. But with the country filled with conflicts, they decided to leave for Indonesia.

Refugees (难民) cannot work in Indonesia and there are limited choices for refugee children to attend local schools. Determined to avoid such a fate, a group of refugees in Puncak took action and scraped together (东拼西凑) their resources to set up a school—the Refugee Learning Center (RLC).
“Our only goal and task is to provide basic education, and prepare the refugee children for their future,” says Abdullah Sarwari. “We’re also trying to provide a normal life as much as possible for them.”
The RLC has also started offering Bahasa Indonesia classes to the refugee community. “Between the refugee and the local community, I feel like there’s a language barrier which stops the refugee from having an honest and open interaction with Indonesians,” says Abdullah.
“If you try your best, to learn the language of a particular place or country, it really helps make things easier,” says Najib. He is among those who signed up for classes, although he admits progress has been slow. But life has improved in some ways for him and his family.

C
Saying farewell to someone you love, even for a night, can be difficult, much less saying goodbye for a lifetime or forever in death. Juliet bid Romeo adieu (再见) for the evening with the words, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” Sweet sorrow is an oxymoron. But this seeming contradiction is true in the context of relationships.
Relationships are based on feelings, emotions, and passion. Deep friendships and loving relationships are measured by the level of emotional attachment. Emotions intensify over time. People spend time with the people they like. The more one person likes another person, the closer the relationship becomes. Each person in the relationship receives an emotional benefit from knowing the other person.
Saying goodbye means separating from the people who make up a significant part of your emotional identity. Separation, even a temporary absence, from the people you have a deep emotional connection with can cause sorrow because you will no longer be able to enjoy their company.
The sweet side of saying goodbye is the emotional fulfillment of being in a close relationship. The time spent together is emotionally rewarding, especially if that person is seen as a soulmate. Humans are social beings. We seek the love and comfort of other people. Loneliness devastates the human condition and leads to sadness. Sad people will do anything they can to find fulfilling relationships. Likewise, happy people will do anything they can to maintain or enhance relationships. Herein lies the essential point of the emotional problem.
The more intense relationships become, the more devastating the emotional loss that is felt upon separation. The exhilaration of relationships cannot be truly measured without experiencing the overwhelming loss of a deep emotional connection.
Enjoy the company of the person you are with as long as you can; knowing the pain you will feel at the end of the relationship is the true measure of the relationship. If it doesn’t hurt to say goodbye, perhaps it wasn’t worth saying hello.
28. Which of the word group can create the same effect as “sweet sorrow”
A. icy cold B. clicking sound C. deafening silence D. endless speech
29. What can we learn from paragraph 3
A. Saying goodbye is unavoidable in our daily life.
B. The companion of close friends can lessen sorrow.
C. A person’s identity is connected with relationship.
D. Separation is the sorrowful part of saying goodbye.
30. What gives a person emotional satisfaction in social life
A. Making more communication with others.
B. Building deep emotional connections with others.
C. Comforting friends with love and intense feelings.
D. Being a thoughtful person by standing in others’ shoes.
31. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Sweet sorrow is very common in close relationships.
B. The pain of separation is the measure of relationships.
C. Human beings are eager to get emotional fulfillment.
D. Happiness is meaningless without sadness to compare it.
【答案】28. C 29. D 30. B 31. B

Emotions intensify over time,(深厚的友谊和爱的关系是由情感依恋的水平来衡量的。情绪会随着时间的推移而加剧)”以及第四段中“The time spent together is emotionally rewarding, especially if that person is seen as a soulmate.
通读全文以及根据最后一段中“Enjoy the company of the person you are with as long as you can; knowing the pain you will feel at the end of the relationship is the true measure of the relationship. (尽可能地享受和你在一起的人的陪伴;知道在一段关系结束时你会感受到的痛苦是衡量这段关系的真正标准。如果说再见无伤大雅,那也许不值得说你好)”可知,文章通过“告别”带给人看似矛盾的情感体验这一现象,通过对比等手段,深入分析了痛苦这种情感体验在人际关系疏密中的作用。B选项“The pain of separation is the measure of relationships.(分离的痛苦是衡量感情的尺度。)”概括文章主要内容。故选B。

The idea of low material desire, low consumption and refusing to work, marry and have children, concluded as a “lying down” lifestyle, recently struck a chord with many young Chinese who are eager to take pause to breathe in this fast-paced and highly-competitive society.
Many millennials (千禧一代) and generation Zs complained to the Global Times that burdens, including work stress, family disputes and financial strains, have pushed them “against the wall”. They said they hate the “involution(内卷),” joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than get trapped in an endless competition against peers.
“Instead of always following the ‘virtues’ of struggle, endure and sacrifice to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary lying down as catharsis (宣泄) and adjustment,” said a scholar. “It is no wonder that some young people, under the growing pressures from child-raising to paying the mortgage (按揭) today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.”
Interestingly, the majority of millennials and Gen Zs reached by the Global Times, who claim to be big fans of the lying down philosophy, acknowledged that they only accept a temporary lying down as a short rest. It is true that with the great improvement of living conditions, some Chinese youth have partially lost the spirit of hardship and are not willing to bear too much hard work. But in fact, lying down is not entirely comfortable. Young people who lie down always feel guilty about their constant loss of morale (士气) far beyond their reach.
“Young people on campus have both aspirations and confusion about their future, but most of us have rejected setting ourselves up in chains to waste opportunities and challenges,” a postgraduate student told the Global Times. “It’s no use running away. I have to ‘stand up’ and face the reality sooner or later.”
32. What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 1 mean
A Warned. B. Punished. C. Amused. D. Touched.
33. What might have caused the “lying down” lifestyle among the young
A. Improvements in living conditions.
B. Growing pressure from family and social life.
C. Increasing material possessions from families.
D. Temporary adjustment to failure in competitions.
34. What’s the scholar’s attitude toward the “lying down” group
A. Understanding. B. Intolerant. C. Supportive. D. Unclear.
35. What can be inferred about the young generation from the text
A. They never really drop their responsibilities.
B. They really enjoy the “lying down” lifestyle.
C. They find their dreams far beyond their reach.
D. They would rather escape than take challenges.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. A 35. A
【解析】

【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Many millennials and generation Zs complained to the Global Times that burdens, including work stress, family disputes and financial strains, have pushed them “against the wall”.(许多千禧一代和Z一代向《环球时报》抱怨说,包括工作压力、家庭琐事和经济压力在内的负担把他们逼到了“绝境”)”可知,来自家庭和社会生活的压力越来越大导致了年轻人“躺平”的生活方式。故选B。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段““Instead of always following the ‘virtues’ of struggle, endure and sacrifice to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary lying down as catharsis and adjustment,” said a scholar. “It is no wonder that some young people, under the growing pressures from child-raising to paying the mortgage today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.”(一位学者说:“他们不总是遵循斗争、忍耐和牺牲的‘美德’来承受压力,而是喜欢暂时躺下,作为宣泄和调整。难怪一些年轻人在今天从抚养孩子到支付抵押贷款的压力下,会试图以一种简单的方式生活,并把担忧抛在脑后。”)”可推知,学者对“躺平”群体的态度是理解。故选A。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“But in fact, lying down is not entirely comfortable. Young people who lie down always feel guilty about their constant loss of morale far beyond their reach.(但事实上,躺平并不完全舒服。躺平的年轻人总是为自己的士气不断丧失而感到内疚)”以及最后一段““Young people on campus have both aspirations and confusion about their future, but most of us have rejected setting ourselves up in chains to waste opportunities and challenges,” a postgraduate student told the Global Times. “It’s no use running away. I have to ‘stand up’ and face the reality sooner or later.”(一名研究生在接受《环球时报》采访时表示:“校园里的年轻人对未来既有抱负,也有困惑,但我们大多数人都不愿把自己束缚起来,浪费机会和挑战。逃跑是没有用的。我迟早要‘站起来’面对现实。”)”可推知,年轻一代从未真正放下自己的责任。故选A。

With a wide smile on her face, 15-year-old Sirin eagerly ran to her mother to proudly show off her new painting. Mother raised in surprise and spoke impatiently, “Not now, baby. I’m busy with an important conversation. Just wait for a while, okay ”
Holding her oil painting, Sirin frowned (皱眉), and then searched for her dad. “Dad, see what I have done,” Sirin exclaimed (大声叫喊) cheerfully. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her, and made a thumbs-up sign!
Immediately, Sirin replied angrily, “Dad, you haven’t seen it yet.”
He smiled at her, saying, “No time, baby. I will see it later.” He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.
She was hard to please with a simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed into her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils (鼻孔). Her face turned red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed (砰地关上) the door and threw herself on her bed.
“Why is everybody so busy ” She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in preschool, middle school and even high school too! She assumed at least her own family members would give some feedback on her thoughts, but they were no exception. Unconsciously (无意识地), her eyes were filled with tears.
The knocking sound on the door put a sudden brake on her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sirin intentionally came late to join them. She kept silent and didn’t look at anyone, scratching (刮擦) at the table mat with her nail. Her mom was puzzled at her unusual behavior. Suddenly, the morning incident came to mind. Softly, she asked, “Honey, did I do anything wrong ”
At this very moment, Sirin could no longer contain her anger.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
At this very moment, Sirin could no longer contain her anger. “Why are both of you so busy ” she roared, tears streaming down her cheeks. She had assumed that her mom and dad would feel proud of her great talent, but she was neglected with everybody having “no time” for her. “I hate both of you!” she screamed angrily, grabbed the painting on the table and tore it in half. Shocked, her mom threw her arms around Sirin tightly, whispering, “Baby, I am so sorry! I promise that this mistake will not be repeated.”
Paragraph 2:
When back from school the next day, Sirin was surprised to see her painting on the wall. It was beautifully framed and below the painting was a sentence “We are so proud of you!” On seeing it, she burst out crying. She ran to her mom and hugged her tightly, fully aware of her mom’s love. Recalling her mom’s busy daily life, she regretted her previous behavior. So she ducked her head, apologizing, “Sorry, my dear mom!” It dawned on them that it is mutual understanding in the family that counts.

Najib is an Afghan who grew up in Iran. He led a tough life. When he found his children would be in the same situation, his family initially returned to Afghanistan. But with the country filled with conflicts, they decided to leave for Indonesia.
“When we first came here, we were in a bad situation. Its language, culture and even weather were different. We had moved away from friends and family,” says Najib. “I was in a tough position but I acted strong because there were no other choices.”

D
The idea of low material desire, low consumption and refusing to work, marry and have children, concluded as a “lying down” lifestyle, recently struck a chord with many young Chinese who are eager to take pause to breathe in this fast-paced and highly-competitive society.
Many millennials (千禧一代) and generation Zs complained to the Global Times that burdens, including work stress, family disputes and financial strains, have pushed them “against the wall”. They said they hate the “involution(内卷),” joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than get trapped in an endless competition against peers.
“Instead of always following the ‘virtues’ of struggle endure and sacrifice to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary lying down as catharsis (宣泄) and adjustment,” said a scholar.
A. Warned. B. Punished. C. Amused. D. Touched.

“Why is everybody so busy ” She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in preschool middle school and even high school too!
