Students at St. Stanislaus High School in Mississippi are among the volunteers along US coasts raising oysters (牡蛎) to help restore, or repair weakened reefs (礁). Oyster reefs are an important part of coastal environments. Each oyster cleans 95 to 190 liters of water a day. The reefs provide living space for shrimp, crabs and fish. They also protect coastlines. In the states of Maryland, Virginia, Mississippi, and Alabama, now there are more than 1,000 oyster gardens. Most of them are in wire cages hanging from private ports.
Colin Wood, one student looking after the St. Stanislaus garden, said he was excited by the hands-on work. “I didn’t realize oysters had a big influence on the environment. And 50,000 to 55,000 adult oysters grown here each year go to reefs in Mobile Bay,” he said.
In the 1950s, an average of 37,400 tons of oysters were taken yearly from partly salty waters in the US. But US oyster harvests fell sharply in the 1990s. Data showed the cause of the drop could be overharvesting, pollution, pests and other problems. Then oyster gardening started.
Oyster gardening uses many of the same methods as farming. Farmers around the country grow oysters near the surface of water. Oysters develop much faster where the water holds more food they eat and enemies can be more easily removed. But the oysters are not being grown to be eaten. Oyster gardens get pulled from the water every seven to ten days. The time out of the water is used to clear out small animals, keep oysters from growing through the wires, and dry and clean off plant-life growing on the wires.
Bob Stokes, the director of the Galveston Bay Foundation in Texas, says, “Oyster gardening is as much about education as it is restoration.”
4.How does Colin Wood feel about his work

B.To pick weak oysters out.
C.To examine the water quality.
D.To keep a good environment for oysters.
7.What can be the best title for the text
A.What oyster gardening is
B.Oyster reefs are becoming endangered
C.Volunteers keep oysters to restore reefs
D.Why oysters are growing popular in the US

Sending a thumbs-up can be seen as passive aggressive(冒犯的), according to Gen Z (those born between 1995 and 2009) who say they feel attacked whenever it is used. Whether the chat is informal, between friends or at work the symbol appears to have a very different, ‘rude’ meaning for the younger generation.
A 24-year-old on Reddit summed up the Gen Z argument, saying it is best ‘never used in any situation’ as it is ‘hurtful’. “No one of my age in the office does it, but the Gen X (those born between 1966 and 1980) people always do it. Take me a bit to adjust and get it out of my head that it means they’re mad-at me,” he added. Other young people agreed it is bad form, especially at work where it can make the team appear unfriendly and not easygoing.
“My last workplace had a WhatsApp chat for our team to send information to each other on, and most of the people on there just replied with a thumbs up. I don’t know why but it seemed a little bit hostile to me,” one woman said. One Reddit user also said the thumbs up actually means that “I’ve read your message and have nothing to add and I hope and pray...all the people in this group chat have nothing to say on it too.”
Older workers appear confused by the reaction, saying they use the thumbs up in work-related chats to show “I agree” or “I understood and will follow.”
Part of the issue is that young people tend to use the thumbs-up in jokes. Barry Kennedy, 24, he said he only used it to communicate with older people like his parents or older colleagues. A survey of 2, 000 people conducted by Perspectus Global showed that a majority of people between the ages of 16 and 29 believe that you are “officially old” if you use thumbs-up or heart emoji.
8.Which of the following point is not the Gen Z’s understanding of the emoji thumbs-up
A.Being rude. B.Being agreeable.
C.Being hurtful. D.Being unfriendly.
9.What does the underlined word “hostile” mean in paragraph 3
A.Unfriendly and aggressive. B.Tough and difficult.
C.Unwanted and unacceptable. D.Strange and unusual.
10.Why can’t older workers understand the young’s reaction to the thumbs-up emoji
A.Because of their poor communications kill.
B.Because of their being old with worse memory.
C.Because of their less communicating with the young.
D.Because of their different understanding of the emoji.
11.Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.The Thumbs-up Emoji: Rejected by the younger generation
B.The Thumbs-up Emoji: Highly Welcomed by Old People
C.The Thumbs-up Emoji: A Sign of Generation Gap
D.The Thumbs-up Emoji: A Sign of Being Aggressive

Smart and highly sensitive (灵敏的), a new soft sensor developed by UBC (University of British Columbia) and Honda researchers opens the door to a wide range of applications in robotics and prosthetics (假肢).
When applied to the surface of prosthetic or robotic arms, the sensor skin provides touch sensitivity and flexibility, making it possible for difficult tasks to be completed by machines, such as picking up a piece of soft fruit. The sensor is also soft to the touch, like human skin, which helps make human interactions safer and more lifelike.
“Our sensor uses weak electric fields to sense objects, even at a distance, much as touchscreens do. But unlike touchscreens, this sensor is soft and can detect (检测) forces into and along its surface,” explained Dr. John Madden, senior study author and a professor of electrical and computer engineering who leads the Advanced Materials and Process Engineering Laboratory at UBC.
The UBC team developed the technology in cooperation with Frontier Robotics, Honda’s research institute. Honda has been innovating in humanoid robotics since the 1980s, and developed the well-known ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) robot. It has also developed devices to assist walking and the emerging Honda Avatar Robot.
“Dr. Madden’s lab has significant expertise in flexible sensors and we’re happy to cooperate with this team in developing touch sensors that can be applied to robots.” said Mr. Ishizaki Ryusuke, one of the study’s lead authors and chief engineer at Frontier Robotics.
Dr. Madden said. “Human skin has a hundred times more sensing point s on a fingertip than our technology does, making it easier to light a match or sew. As sensors continue to develop to be more skin-like, and can also detect temperature and even damage, there is a need for robots to be smarter about which sensors to pay attention to and how to respond. Developments in sensors and artificial intelligence will need to go hand in hand.”
12.What do we know about the new sensor
A.Its surface feels soft. B.It is far from sensitive.
C.Its interaction with humans seems unsafe. D.It is unable to pick up a piece of fruit.
13.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the new sensor
A.Its types. B.Its structures.
C.Its advantages. D.Its directions for use.
14.What is Mr. Ishizaki Ryusuke’s attitude toward the UBC team
A.Doubtful. B.Positive.
C.Unconcerned. D.Unclear.
15.What can be learned from the last paragraph
A.Human skin is easily hurt. B.A fingertip has few sensing points.
C.Sensors can light matches easily. D.Robots need further improvement.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Setting boundaries (界限) with people, especially those you care about, can be difficult. You may feel guilty about doing so, but there’s no need to. You won’t be able to care for others if you can’t care for yourself. 16
Offer alternatives (选择) to what they want.
You may have a friend who wants to come over and stay all day. Being a good friend doesn’t mean doing everything they want you to do. You have every right to decide what you feel comfortable with. 17 However, you can offer alternatives. You can say, “It’s OK to come over, but only one hour is available.”
Tell your friend you’ll help, but you expect help, too.
You may find that you are always asked for help but never receive any in return. 18 For example, if your friend always asks for a lift, you could say, “I don’t mind taking you places, but I’ll need some gas money if this is going to continue.”
19
Let them know you’ll be there for them with conditions. Some “friends” want to use up all you’ve got, but never offer anything in return. 20 These are “friends” you don’t need, and you’ll need to let them know now. Offer a warning about boundary violations to let your friend know when they occur. You might say, “Hey, you failed to keep an appointment as arranged and that wasn’t cool.”
A.Give a warning.
B.Do some helpful acts.
C.You don’t have to cut them off completely.
D.They may borrow things from you but refuse to return the favor.
E.Setting up boundaries gives you a chance to practice this self-care.
F.They may constantly borrow things from you but refuse to return the favor.
G.Let your friends know that you expect the same amount of help that you give.
