Five years ago, when I taught art at a school in Seattle, I used Tinkertoys as a test at the beginning of a term to find out something about my students. I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student, and said: “Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have 45 minutes today — and 45 minutes each day for the rest of the week.”
A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see what the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.
Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time, his constructions filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I was delighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect(感染) other students.
Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside. I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking. Without fail one would declare, “But I’m just not creative.”
“Do you dream at night when you’re asleep ”
“Oh, sure.”
“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.” The student would tell something wildly imaginative. Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads. “That’s pretty creative. Who does that for you ”
“Nobody. I do it.”
“Really-at night, when you’re asleep ”
“Sure.”
“Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay ”
15. The teacher used Tinkertoys in class in order to ________.
A. know more about the students
B. make the lessons more exciting
C. raise the students’ interest in art
D teach the students about toy design
16. What do we know about the boy mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. He liked to help his teacher. B. He preferred to study alone.
C. He was active in class. D. He was imaginative.
17. What does the underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Mistake. B. Drawback.
C. Difficulty. D. Burden.
18. Why did the teacher ask the students to talk about their dreams
A. To help them to see their creativity.
B. To find out about their sleeping habits.
C. To help them to improve their memory.
D. To find out about their ways of thinking.
A 16. D 17. B 18. A

Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations. 故选A。
Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect(感染) other students.
I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking.

Satellites are an important part of our ordinary lives. For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of the Earth to show how clouds are moving. Satellites are also used to connect our international phone calls.
Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to US through satellites. Airplane pilots also sometimes use a satellite to help them find their exact location.
We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35, 880 kilometers above the equator. Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11, 000 kilometers an hour—exactly the same speed that the earth rotates (旋转), because a satellite must stay in a certain position and it must orbit the Earth with its antennae (天线) facing the earth. Sometimes, it moves away from its orbit, so there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days.
Space is not empty! Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the Earth. A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years. Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to Earth to be repaired. Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit the Earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and they can crash into each other.
19. Which of the following is NOT done by satellites according to the passage
A. Sending information for weather forecast. B. Taking photographs of the Earth.
C. Sending TV pictures. D. Providing food for airplane pilots.
20. What does the underlined word “This” in the 3rd paragraph refer to
A. A satellite.
B. A little rocket.
C. A satellite seems to stay in the same place in the sky.
D. The satellite puts the rockets in the right position.
21. Why does the satellite move around the world at the same speed as the Earth rotates
A In order to take photograph.
B. In order to stay in a right position in the orbit.
C. In order to move away from its orbit.
D. In order to send television pictures.
D 20. C 21. B
根据文章第一段“Satellites are an important part of our ordinary lives. For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of the Earth to show how clouds are moving.(卫星是我们日常生活的重要组成部分。例如,天气预报的信息是由卫星发送的。有些卫星装有照相机,可以拍摄地球的照片,以显示云是如何移动的。)”和文章第三段“We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another.(我们用卫星把电视图片从世界的一个地方传送到另一个地方。)”
根据上文“Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place.(有时我们可以在天空中看到一颗卫星,它似乎停留在同一个地方。)”
根据文章第三段“This is because it is moving around the world at 11, 000 kilometers an hour—exactly the same speed that the earth rotates (旋转), because a satellite must stay in a certain position and it must orbit the Earth with its antennae (天线) facing the earth.(这是因为它以每小时11000公里的速度绕地球运行——与地球自转的速度完全相同,因为卫星必须保持在一定的位置,并且它的天线必须面向地球绕地球运行。)”
D
Are you addicted to computer games Do you stay up all night playing them Do you feel happy after you play computer games
There’s no doubt that the excitement and appealing of games these days makes them hard to put down. We are attracted by the choice when it comes to gaming: You can role play—creating your own fantasy characters and stories, giving you a chance to step out of everyday life into an imaginary world. And there are shooting games where you can let out your anger and depression in violent situations where you kill people with guns. You can get excited from the games.
However, can these kinds of games really be fun and can being absorbed in virtual reality be good for us Should we worry about their effects on our health Popular games like Grand Theft Auto have been blamed for everything from falling results at school to causing acts of extreme violence. Internet safety adviser, Alan MacKenzie, thinks “any people understandably will just think that a game is just a game and not realizing the exact content that’s in there”. He gives an example of the violence, which he says is “wholly inappropriate for anybody, not to mention children.”
Others will argue that gaming is a harmless form of entertainment. There is evidence that playing video games could actually be good for us. Some games like Game of Thrones and World of Warcraft are educational and using games certainly can help children learn good qualities. Studies have also shown that the skills used in playing games can cause growth in certain areas of the brain, the ability to think in 3D and even improve our eyesight.
Video game players are also no longer just simple creatures. For some, gaming is having a positive effect on their social lives with games like Halo and World of Warcraft often being played in groups. When your group works together to win the game, your sense of achievement is higher than when winning by yourself.
So every coin has two sides. It seems today, gaming isn’t just for game fans and if used in a proper way, we can all take part. If video games have two sides, what side do you stand by

Kids and Food: Advice for Parents
It is important for parents to know how to help their kids eat healthily. Here are a few easy ways:
Parents control the supply lines.
___26___ Though kids may keep asking for less nutritious foods, parents should decide which foods are regularly provided in the house. Kids won’t go hungry. They’ll eat what’s available in the fridge at home.
Say goodbye to the “clean-plate club”.
___27___ Lots of parents grew up under the clean-plate rule, but that way doesn’t help kids listen to their own bodies when they are full. When kids feel full, they are less likely to overeat.
___28___
Food preferences are developed early in life. Likes and dislikes begin forming even when kids are babies. So parents need to serve new food on different occasions for a child to accept it, which should be started when he is young.
Food is not love.
Find better ways to say “I love you.” When foods are used to reward kids and show love, they may start to turn to food when feeling worried or unhappy. ___29___
Kids do as you do.
___30___ When trying to teach good eating habits, try to set the best example. Choose nutritious foods, eat at the table, and don’t forget breakfasts.
A. Rewrite the kids’ menu.
B. Start them young.
C. You decide which foods to buy and when to serve them.
D. Let kids choose what to eat and how much they want.
E. Be a role model and eat healthily yourself.
F. Let kids stop eating when they feel they’ve had enough.
G. Offer praise and attention instead of food treats.
C 27. F 28. B 29. G 30. E
由该段标题“Parents control the supply lines(父母控制着供给线)”和下文“Though kids may keep asking for less nutritious foods, parents should decide which foods are regularly provided in the house.(尽管孩子可能一再要求营养少的食物,但父母应该决定家里有哪些食物是定期提供的)”可推知,设空处应陈述父母要决定家里吃什么食物,以及吃的频率。
由该段标题“Say goodbye to the ‘clean-plate club’(对‘吃完盘子里的食物俱乐部’说再见)”和下文“Lots of parents grew up under the clean-plate rule, but that way doesn’t help kids listen to their own bodies when they are full.(很多父母都是在‘吃完盘子里的食物’的规则下长大的,但这种方式并不能帮助孩子们在吃饱的时候听从自己身体的声音)”可推知,“吃完盘子里的食物”规则对于吃饱的孩子来说没有帮助,所以如果孩子吃饱了就不要再强迫他们非得把盘子里的食物吃光, F项“当孩子吃饱时就让孩子不吃了”符合语境。
根据本段内容“Food preferences are developed early in life. Likes and dislikes begin forming even when kids are babies. So parents need to serve new food on different occasions for a child to accept it, which should be started when he is young.(食物偏好在生命早期就形成了。好恶在孩子还是婴儿的时候就开始形成了。所以父母需要在不同的场合提供新的食物,让孩子接受它,这应该从他小的时候就开始)”可知,本段主要是说要帮助孩子从小养成不挑食的好习惯。B项“小时候就开始”可以作为本段小题,选项中的them指的是“Food preferences(对食物的喜好)”,即饮食习惯。故选B项。
【29题详解】

B make the lessons more exciting
C. raise the students’ interest in art
D. teach the students about toy design

They are usually 35 880 kilometers above the equator.
A. In order to take photograph.
B. In order to stay in a right position in the orbit.
C. In order to move away from its orbit.
D. In order to send television pictures.
