Jim Glaub and Dylan Parker had just been handed the keys to their new Manhattan apartment on 22nd Street when the outgoing tenant (房客) said something curious, “Just so you know, there’s this thing where letters addressed to Santa come to the apartment. The previous tenants received the mail too. It has been coming for years and no one knows why.”
Glaub and Parker settled in to their new home, and for the first two years only a few letters from kids or parents asked “Santa” for gifts they could not otherwise afford. Then in the months leading to Christmas 2010, their mailbox was filled with letters to Santa every day. They responded to as many as they could, writing notes, even buying gifts. Glaub, of course, is not Santa. They could do only so much.
But one night, when he and Parker threw a 1960s — themed Christmas party, a solution appeared. Guests noticed the hundreds of letters they’d yet to act upon and asked about them. Glaub told them the story and his guests were intrigued. “A lot of people were like, ‘I’ll take a letter. I’ll satisfy it.’” And so was born Miracle on 22nd Street.
To spread the word, they started a website, , and a Facebook page. Working with other nonprofits that help those in need, they invited families from around the county to go online and request gifts for their children. Likewise, donors, also known as “elves,” can sign up to buy gifts for a child or family, accompanied by a signed note with Elf before their name, such as Elf Jim or Elf Jody.
Last year, Glaub and Miracle on 22nd Street helped more than 800 families. Glaub no longer wonders why the letters come to the apartment. Putting in the long hours to help the families is what it’s all about for him. “It’s part of Christmas for me,” he says, “It wouldn’t be Christmas without it.”
4. What did the tenant think of receiving the letters in the apartment
A. Odd. B. Exciting. C. Frightening D. Disturbing.
5. What can be implied about the couple in paragraph 2
A. They got really bothered. B. They had tried their best.
C. They overcame the challenge. D. They were content with their new life.
6. What does the underlined word “intrigued” mean in paragraph 3
A. Puzzled. B. Relieved. C. Interested. D. Surprised.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. How a volunteer organization is formed.
B. How Miracle on 22nd Street is operated.
C. How a kind couple deal with letters to Santa.
D. How donors purchase gifts for families in need.
C
I need help! I have to fix a leaking pipe in my bathroom but I'm not sure where to begin. I know I lack the necessary DIY skills but luckily there are numerous books and online videos that will hopefully give me the information I need. Publications that help us to help ourselves are nothing new, but the range of them is increasing with advice being given far beyond practical tasks around the house.
Bookshops these days are full of titles which claim to boost your self-confidence, your wealth, your love life or your career. Some claim to improve your life within seven days! It's big business and it's thought that the self-help industry is worth $10bn in the US alone.
The first self-help book called 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' was published in 1936, and has since sold 30 million copies and is still popular now. It includes guidance on how to make people like you and how to make your life happier. It might seem strange to think that we need a book to tell us how to live our lives but self-help books remain a go to remedy for those of us looking for enlightenment.
There are, of course, trends in what we need help with. Emma Marshall, who works at British bookshop Waterstones, says "at the moment we're in the tidying up, getting rid of things trend... I think the trend right now is about slowing down in your life." It seems there is always something we need help with, and reading about it can be very therapeutic - it makes us feel good, even if we don't do anything about it.
Of course, the internet has become the place to go to for salvation. We've got used to searching for solutions online, and now these solutions even include how to fix or improve our lives. Interestingly, psychologist Caroline Beaton, says people called 'millennials' are self-critical -they are aware of their own faults—which also means they're more likely to spend time and money on self-help. There's also a theory that the self-help industry does well during a recession – people are perhaps even more likely to reach for self-help to improve their situation.
Whatever the reason for the continued interest in self-help, it's good to know help is at hand when we need it. The alternative to finding a happier life is just to come to terms with yourself as you are - I know, I read about it in a book! Do you believe in self-help books
8. Where else can you get self-help advice apart from books
A. from teachers B. from friends
C. from the Internet D. from parents
9. What do you know about self-books
A. They may offer you some keys to success.
B. They hasn't gained great popularity.
C. All of us enjoy them very much.
D. They can certainly improve your life within seven days.
10. Why do millennials spend more money on self-help books according to Caroline Beaton
A. They are stuck in a recession.
B. They realize they are not perfect.
C. They are more likely to have access to books.
D. They haven't got used to searching for solutions online.
11. What can we infer from the passage
A. People don't have interest in self-help books.
B. Accepting yourself as you are makes you happier.
C. The self-help industry makes little difference during a recession.
D. The current trend in self-help books is about rushing around and taking things easier.
D
Have you ever taken a personality test and found the results to be scarily accurate, checked your horoscope and had everything come true or taken an online quiz that told you precisely what your favorite Disney princess means about you Well, we certainly have done so too many times, so we decided to do a little investigation into how Internet -quizzes, magazines and horoscope books seem to know us so well.
We discovered that we’ve all been falling victim to the Barnum effect. The Barnum Effect is the phenomenon that occurs when individuals believe that personality descriptions apply specifically to them, despite the fact that the description is actually filled with information that applies to everyone. It was named after P. T. Barnum, a famous 19th century showman, who would famously say, “There’s a fool born every minute.”
Indeed, Barnum proved to be right, as pseudoscience —such as astrology and personality tests — remains popular to this day. The Bamum effect explains why extremely general statements, such as the results of your personality test, seem so specific to you. Don’t believe us Well, late psychology professor Bertram Forer offered some proof.
In a historic study, Forer conducted a personality test to his students. Forer copied statements such as “You have a great need for other people to like and admire you.” and “You have a tendency to be critical of yourself.” from the newspaper’s horoscope column and gave a test to every student. Forer asked his students to rate the accuracy of the test from one to five, with “one” being the least accurate and “five” being the most accurate. The average rating was 4.26. The universally high ratings from students on the personality test supported the Barnum effect.
One of the most important factors when reproducing this study is to keep the statements as vague as possible, with a mix of mostly positive and some negative content. For example, using the phrase “at times” makes for a powerful Barnum Effect. See “At times you are outgoing and sociable, while at other times you are shy and reserved” who would not agree with that statement
So, keep in mind that we are not immune to the Barnum effect. Take everything you hear with several grains of salt.
12. What is the purpose of Paragraph 2
A. To present a controversial opinion. B. To provide an example of an idea.

13. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Potential application of the Barnum effect. B. Further explanation of the Barnum effect.
C. Supporting evidence for the Barnum effect. D. A reasonable doubt of the research process.
14. Why do so many people believe the statements in horoscope and personality tests
A. They are so specific. B. They are unclear.
C. They are positive. D. They are believable.
15. How is the passage organized
A Phenomenon—analysis. B. Cause—effect.
C. Problem—solution. D. Claim—counterclaim.

Ways to Develop Self-discipline
Five years ago, I was the heaviest I’ve weighed in my life. When I would run, I’d immediately get tired. The worst part is that I had no motivation to get healthier—until I threw my back out. ____16____ When I went to physical therapy (治疗), the young woman helping me pointed to my stomach and said, “we need to awaken these muscles.” From that point on, I knew I had to change. I had to think about how to develop self-discipline with eating and working out.
____17____But I eventually lost 30 pounds and have maintained a consistent workout schedule for the past five years. Of course, self-discipline is bigger than just physical health. Having discipline helps us grow, makes us reliable, and strengthens our moral framework. Here’s how to develop self-discipline.
Set clear end goals. ____18____ If we don’t set clear goals, we’ll float around like feathers in the breeze. If you want to be disciplined, set clear and measurable goals. Then display those goals where you’ll see them every day.
Do the small things. We all want big change quickly. It doesn’t happen that way, though. Self-discipline starts by performing small activities consistently. The small things add up to big results. ____19____ Every small act of faithfulness makes your self-discipline stronger.
Keep record of your progress. It’s pointless to have goals if you aren’t measuring whether or not you are moving toward them. When I don’t track my progress, I stop doing things I need to do and become lazy. It’s easy to lack discipline when you lose focus on where you’re going.____20____
A. It did take a lot of work.
B. I decided to take regular exercise.
C. Keeping track helps you stay on point.
D. We have to keep in mind where we want to go.
E. Occasionally, you may get results without effort.
F. I had shooting pains down my legs whenever I got up.
G. It may take time to see those returns, but stick with it.

To act with integrity was a habit with Susan who always follows the Golden Rule: “Do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you.” But when she thought over her past conduct, a blush of shame crept to her cheeks, as many little acts of selfishness and unkindness came back to her memory. She resolved that for the future, both in great things and small. she would remember and follow the Golden Rule.
It was not long after this that an opportunity occurred, which tried Susan’s principles. One Saturday evening when she went, as usual, to Mr. Thompson’s inn, to receive the money of her mother’s washing for him, which amounted to five dollars, she found Mr. Thompson apparently in a terrible rage with some horse dealers with whom he had been bargaining. He held in his hand an open pocketbook (钱袋子) , full of bills and scarcely noticing Susan as she made her request, except to swear at her for troubling him when he was busy, he handed her a banknote.
Glad to escape so easily, Susan hurried out of the gate. Pausing to put the money safely in her purse, she discovered that he had given her two bills instead of one. She looked around; nobody was near and her first impulse was joy at the unexpected prize.
“It is all mine,” said she to herself. “I will buy my mother a new coat with it, and she can give her old one to my sister Mary, and then Mary can go to the Sunday school with me next winter. I wonder if I can buy a pair of shoes for my brother Tom, too.”
At that moment she remembered that he must have given it to her by mistake. But again the voice of the tempter whispered, “He gave it, and how do you know that he did not intend to make you a present of it Keep it! He will never know it, for he had too many such bills in that great pocketbook.”

A 5. B 6. C 7. C

根据第一段“Jim Glaub and Dylan Parker had just been handed the keys to their new Manhattan apartment on 22nd Street when the outgoing tenant (房客) said something curious, “Just so you know, there’s this thing where letters addressed to Santa come to the apartment. The previous tenants received the mail too. It has been coming for years and no one knows why.”(Jim Glaub和Dylan Parker刚拿到他们在曼哈顿第22街的新公寓的钥匙,那个即将离开的房客说了些奇怪的话:“告诉你们一声,有个地方,给圣诞老人的信会寄到公寓里。之前的房客也收到了邮件。它已经来了很多年,没有人知道为什么。”)”可推知,房客对在公寓里收到这些信感到奇怪。故选A。
根据第二段的“They responded to as many as they could, writing notes, even buying gifts. Glaub, of course, is not Santa. They could do only so much.(他们尽可能多地回复,写便条,甚至买礼物。Glaub当然不是圣诞老人。他们能做的也就这么多了)”可推知,这对夫妇已经尽力了。故选B。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词下文“A lot of people were like, ‘I’ll take a letter. I’ll satisfy it.’(很多人说,‘我要一封信。我会满足它的。’)”可推知,他的客人们都很感兴趣。由此可知,划线词intrigued的意思是“感兴趣的”,和interested意思相近。故选C。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段的“Glaub and Parker settled in to their new home, and for the first two years only a few letters from kids or parents asked “Santa” for gifts they could not otherwise afford. Working with other nonprofits that help those in need, they invited families from around the county to go online and request gifts for their children. Likewise, donors, also known as “elves,” can sign up to buy gifts for a child or family, accompanied by a signed note with Elf before their name, such as Elf Jim or Elf Jody.(为了传播这个消息,他们建立了一个网站,和一个Facebook页面。

I need help! I have to fix a leaking pipe in my bathroom but I'm not sure where to begin. I know I lack the necessary DIY skills, but luckily there are numerous books and online videos that will hopefully give me the information I need.

Some claim to improve your life within seven days!(如今,书店里到处都是声称能提升你的自信,财富,生活或事业的书名。 故选A项。

C. To offer a solution to a problem. D. To define the meaning of a term.
13. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Potential application of the Barnum effect. B. Further explanation of the Barnum effect.
C. Supporting evidence for the Barnum effect. D. A reasonable doubt of the research process.
14. Why do so many people believe the statements in horoscope and personality tests
A. They are so specific. B. They are unclear.
C. They are positive. D. They are believable.
15. How is the passage organized
A. Phenomenon—analysis. B. Cause—effect.
C. Problem—solution. D. Claim—counterclaim.
D 13. C 14. B 15. A

根据文章第二段“We discovered that we’ve all been falling victim to the Barnum effect. The Barnum Effect is the phenomenon that occurs when individuals believe that personality descriptions apply specifically to them, despite the fact that the description is actually filled with information that applies to everyone. It was named after P. T. 13题详解】
根据文章第三段最后一句“ Don’t believe us Well, late psychology professor Bertram Forer offered some proof. (不相信我们?嗯,已故的心理学教授Bertram Forer提供了一些证据)”和第四段“In a historic study, Forer conducted a personality test to his students. Forer copied statements such as “You have a great need for other people to like and admire you.” and “You have a tendency to be critical of yourself.” from the newspaper’s horoscope column and gave a test to every student. 【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段中“We discovered that we’ve all been falling victim to the Barnum effect. The Barnum Effect is the phenomenon that occurs when individuals believe that personality descriptions apply specifically to them, despite the fact that the description is actually filled with information that applies to everyone. (在复制这项研究时,最重要的因素之一是让陈述尽可能模糊,主要是积极的内容和一些消极的内容)”可推知,很多人相信占卜和性格描述,是因为这些描述中充满了适用于所有人的信息,也就是说这些描述其实是很模棱两可的。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。阅读文章可知,文章第一段“Have you ever taken a personality test and found the results to be scarily accurate, checked your horoscope and had everything come true or taken an online quiz that told you precisely what your favorite Disney princess means about you Well, we certainly have done so too many times, so we decided to do a little investigation into how Internet -quizzes, magazines and horoscope books seem to know us so well. 故选A项。

D We have to keep in mind where we want to go.
E. Occasionally, you may get results without effort.
F. I had shooting pains down my legs whenever I got up.
G. It may take time to see those returns, but stick with it.
F 17. A 18. D 19. G 20. C
