I had always wanted to see England, Scotland and Wales. So when my brother suggested that we take a week — long vacation together somewhere, I immediately did an Internet search. It was at that time when I found Expat Explore. It was a travel agency that could offer just what I wanted at an acceptable price. In fact, I was afraid that it was too good to be true! So I went back to Google to look for evaluations (评价) of Expat Explore. And I could only find positive things.
My second trip with Expat Explore was my first solo trip. I met several people travelling alone on my first trip and after talking with them, I decided to give it a try. When I landed in London by myself for the first time. I wondered why I had thought this was a good idea. My fears didn’t go away until the next morning I met up with the tour group.
I have lived my entire life in the U.S. , so it is so amazing to visit a place like the Colosseum (角斗场) in Rome that was built over 1, 500 years before America was discovered! Many buildings I have always considered historical in the U.S. are very modern in comparison to those in Europe. The more of the world I see, the more I want to discover the rest of it.
There are my tips for travelling to a place that you never have been to. You’d better plan your vacation through a combination of suggestions from travel agencies and relevant information from the Internet. And there are still many things you couldn’t expect before the trip. I still remember the day when I first visited London, I couldn’t find my way to the hotel I booked before. I felt really anxious at first, but later I tried to keep calm and ask the locals how I could go to the hotel. They were friendly to give me several ways to choose. You can also download apps such as iTranslate and Google Maps on your phone, so that you could understand people who only speak their native language.
4. What did the author find about Expat Explore according to Paragraph 1
A. It provided free travel choices.
B It mainly focused on travels in Europe.
C. It offered satisfying services at affordable prices.
D. It allowed tourists to design special travel programs.
5. How did the author feel when she travelled alone for the first time
A. Satisfied. B. Excited.
C. Frightened. D. Bored.
6. According to Paragraph 3, what does the author think of travelling
A. Travelling encourages her to broaden her view.
B. Travelling gives her more chances to make friends.
C. Travelling develops her interest in modern America.
D. Travelling increases her desire to learn foreign languages.
7. What’s the author’s purpose by mentioning her travelling experience in the last paragraph
A. To tell us the importance of translation tools.
B. To teach us how to communicate with the locals.
C. To warn us about the common accidents when travelling.
D. To show how to plan for unexpected situations during travelling.
C
To develop one’s taste in English, the most effective way is to read English books widely. Yet one may be at a loss to choose the proper books, especially as a beginner. As a native Spanish, I would like to share some of my reading experience.
My first English novel was Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But my experience was somewhat horrible. I had great difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it. It’s not the vocabulary that troubled me, but rather the way Austen constructs sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed rather unfamiliar to me at that time. My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway’s novel-A Farewell to Arms. No long and puzzling sentences. And I particularly liked his brief style. So my first suggestion is, as a beginner, you’d better choose modern novels instead of classical ones.
However, if you limit yourself to novels, you will miss a lot of treasures. Besides, English essays also play a key role. They can at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell’s work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the special sense of humor. His simple language enables his philosophy within the reach of ordinary people. Therefore, here comes my second suggestion-essays are also vital.
Never follow others’ recommendations and opinions blindly, however famous or influential the person might be. We should be open to various ideas, but always think independently and determine for ourselves. As a saying goes, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. With that in mind, we are bound to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.
8. What made the first English novel that the author read hard to understand
A. Difficult conversations.
B. The old-fashioned vocabulary.
C. Not knowing the social background.
D. Sentences and Austen’s way of thinking.
9. What does the underlined word “vital” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Important. B. Challenging.
C. Typical. D. Convenient.
10. What advice does the author give in the last paragraph
A. Compare books before buying.
B. Read books that are influential.
C. Don’t blindly follow others’ choices.
D. Choose books that challenge us most.
11. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage
A. Give comments on literature works.
B. Tell beginners how to choose English books.
C. Encourage people to read more English books.
D. Recommend first class books to English learners.
D
While telling others your zodiac sign (星座), you are being evaluated (评估). Evaluations are being made about your luck, your personality, future development and how you will do in a given year. So what is the Chinese zodiac, exactly It’s a 12-year cycle labeled (标记) with animals, starting with a Rat and ending with a Pig. For example, if you were born in 2004, you are a Monkey.
The Chinese believe some animals are luckier than the others, such as the Dragon. Unlike in Western tradition, the Chinese Dragon stands for power, strength and wealth. It’s everyone’s dream to have a Dragon baby. Ma Yun’s parents must have been very proud. And they are not the only ones. In 2012, the Year of the Dragon, the birthrate in China increased by about 5%. That means another one million more babies. With a traditional preference for baby boys, the boy-girl ratio that year was 120 to 100. When those Dragon boys grow up, they will face much more serious competition in love and job markets.
According to the BBC and Chinese government reports, January 2015 saw a peak of cesarean sections Why That was the last month for the Year of the Horse. It’s not because they like horses so much, it’s because they try to avoid having unlucky Goat babies.
Tiger is another unwelcome animal, because of its dangerous and unstable (不稳定的) personality. Many Chinese places saw a considerable decline of birthrate during those years.
Perhaps one should consider zodiac in a different way, as those Tiger and Goat babies will face much less competition. Maybe they are the lucky ones. I went through the Forbes top 300 richest people in the world, and it’s interesting to see the most unwelcome two animals, the Goat and Tiger, are at the top of the list, even higher than the Dragon. So maybe we should consider that it’s much better to have less competition.
12. What can we infer from Paragraph 2
A. Dragon boys are much more competitive when growing up.
B. There were about one million dragon babies in 2012.
C. There were 20% more boys than girls born in 2012.
D Ma Yun is proud that he is a Dragon.
13. Why was there a peak of cesarean sections in January 2015
A. People wanted to have Horse babies very much.
B. People considered Goat babies to be unlucky.
C. It’s the first month of the year.
D. People tried to avoid dangers.
14. What does the underlined word “decline” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Drop. B. Need.
C. Increase. D. Change.
15. What does the author say about Tiger and Goat babies
A. They have fewer competitors.
B. They are difficult to get along with.
C. They will be more popular in job markets.
D. They will become richer than Dragon babies.

D 9. A 10. C 11. B
根据第二段中的“It’s not the vocabulary that troubled me, but rather the way Austen constructs sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed rather unfamiliar to me at that time.(困扰我的不是词汇,而是奥斯汀的造句方式,以及她的思维方式,这在当时对我来说似乎相当陌生。)”
根据第三段中的“Besides, English essays also play a key role. They can at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell’s work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the special sense of humor. His simple language enables his philosophy within the reach of ordinary people.(此外,英语文章也起着关键作用。 故选A项。
根据尾段中的“Never follow others’ recommendations and opinions blindly, however famous or influential the person might be. We should be open to various ideas, but always think independently and determine for ourselves. As a saying goes, one man’s meat is another man’s poison.(永远不要盲目听从别人的建议和意见,不管这个人多么有名或有影响力。我们应该对各种各样的想法持开放态度,但总是独立思考并为自己做决定。俗话说,一个人的美味是另一个人的毒药。)”可知,作者建议不要盲目地听从别人的建议和意见。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据首段中的“To develop one’s taste in English, the most effective way is to read English books widely.(要培养一个人的英语品味,最有效的方法是广泛阅读英语书籍。)”和“As a native Spanish, I would like to share some of my reading experience.(作为一个土生土长的西班牙人,我想分享一些我的阅读经验。)”

D. Ma Yun is proud that he is a Dragon.
C 13. B 14. A 15. A

根据第三段中“Why That was the last month for the Year of the Horse. It’s not because they like horses so much, it’s because they try to avoid having unlucky Goat babies.(为什么 那是马年的最后一个月。这并不是因为他们很喜欢马,而是因为他们尽量避免生下不走运的羊宝宝)”可知,2015年1月出现剖宫产高峰的原因是人们认为属羊的孩子不吉利。故选B项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“Tiger is another unwelcome animal, because of its dangerous and unstable (不稳定的) personality. Many Chinese places saw a considerable decline of birthrate during those years.(老虎是另一种不受欢迎的动物,因为它的危险和不稳定的性格。在那几年里,中国许多地方的出生率都出现了大幅decline)”中“Tiger is another unwelcome animal”可知,人们不喜欢老虎,所以也不愿意自己的孩子属虎,由此推知,虎年的出生率会下降,所以划线词与动词drop同义。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Perhaps one should consider zodiac in a different way, as those Tiger and Goat babies will face much less competition.(也许我们应该换个角度来考虑生肖,因为属虎和属羊的宝宝面临的竞争要少得多)”可知,作者认为虎宝宝和山羊宝宝的竞争对手更少。故选A项。
