Adrian’s “Amazing Race” started early, when his parents realize that he, as a baby, couldn’t hear a thing, not even loud noises. In a special school for the hearing-impaired (听觉受损的), he learned sign language and got to mix with other disabled children. However, the sight of all the disabled children communicating with one another upset his mother. She wanted him to lead a normal life. So after speaking to an advisor, she sent him to private classes where he learned to read lips and pronounce words.
Later on, Adrian’s parents decided to send him to a regular school. But the headmaster tried to prevent them from doing so, saying regular schools couldn’t take care of a special-needs student. His parents were determined to take the risk and push him hard to go through his work every day because they want to prove that, given the opportunity, he could do anything. Adrian made the grade and got accepted. It was a big challenge the pace was faster so he had to sit at the front of the class and really pay attention to the teacher, which wasn’t always easy. But he stuck to it and did a lot of extra work after school.
The effort made by Adrian and his parents paid off Adrian graduated with good grades and got into a top high school. He also achieved a lot in life outside school. He developed a love for the outdoors and went to Nepal to climb mountains. He even entered the World Yacht Race 05/06 — being the first hearing-impaired Asian to do so.
But none of these achievements would have been possible without one of the most important lessons from his mother. “If you believe in yourself and work hard, you can achieve great result,” she often said.

Plants may tell us when they’re in trouble. Thirsty tomato and tobacco plants make clicking sounds, researchers have found. The sounds are ultrasonic (超声波的), meaning they are too high-pitched for human ears to hear. But when the sounds are transformed to lower pitches, they sound like popping bubbles (爆破的泡泡). Plants also make clicks when their stems (茎) are cut.
“It’s not like the plants are screaming” says Lilach Hadany, an evolutionary biologist working at Tel Aviv University in Israel. “Plants may not mean to make these noises. We’ve shown only that plants create informative sounds.”
Hadany and her colleagues first heard the clicks when they set microphones next to plants on tables in a lab. The microphones caught some noises. But the researchers needed to make sure that the clicking was coming from the plants. So, the scientists placed plants inside soundproof boxes in the basement, far from the noise of the lab. There, microphones picked up ultrasonic pops from thirsty tomato plants. Though it was outside humans’ hearing range, the clicking made by plants was about as loud as a normal conversation.
Cut tomato plants and dry or cut tobacco plants clicked, too. But plants that had enough water or hadn’t been cut stayed mostly quiet. Wheat, corn and grapevines also made sounds when stressed out.
The researchers don’t yet know why plants click. Bubbles forming and then popping inside plant tissues that transport water might make the noises. But however they happen, pops from crops could help farmers, the researchers suggest. Microphones, for example, could monitor fields or greenhouses to detect when plants need to be irrigated (灌溉).
Hadany wonders whether other plants and insects already tune into plant pops. Other studies have suggested that plants respond to sounds. And animals from pests (害虫), moths to mice can hear in the range of the ultrasonic clicks. Sounds made by plants could be heard from around five meters away. Hadany’s team is now studying what the living things near the plants will do after hearing the sounds.
23. What is the main idea of the first paragraph
A. Interpreting plant sounds isn’t easy.
B. Plants sound off when they’re in trouble.
C. It’s interesting to hear the sounds of plants.
D. Plants make sounds in a different way from humans.
24. Why did the scientists put plants inside soundproof boxes in the basement
A. To enjoy the sounds made by the plants.
B. To have a better conversation with the plants.
C. To find out whether the plants did make sounds.
D. To keep the plant sounds within their hearing range.
25. In what way can microphones be used to benefit plants
A. Weed prevention. B. Pest control.
C. Temperature monitoring. D. Timely irrigation.
26. What still remains unknown to Hadany’s team
A. Whether the sounds of plants can travel far.
B. Whether animals can hear the sounds of plants.
C How the neighbors of plants respond to their sounds.
D. How plants and animals communicate with each other.

D
You spend a third of your life asleep, a certain part of which involves dreaming. But most often, you don’t remember any of your dreams. While the exact reason of why we can hardly recall our dreams is not fully known, scientists have gotten some insight into memory processes during sleep, leading to several ideas that may explain our forgetfulness.
You are awake, but is your hippocampus (海马体) awake When we fall asleep, not all the brain’s regions go offline at the same time. Researchers have found one of the last regions to go to sleep is the hippocampus, a structure in brain that is important for moving information from short-term memory into long-term memory.
“If the hippocampus is the last to go to sleep, it could very well be the last to wake up,” said Thomas Andrillon, a neuroscientist at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. While this might explain why dream memories are so fleeting, it doesn’t mean that your hippocampus has been inactive throughout the night. In fact, this region is quite active during sleep.
Sometimes your dreams are just not memorable. Do you remember what you were thinking about this morning when brushing your teeth Dreams, especially ordinary ones, may be just like daydreaming thoughts and believed by the brain to be too useless to remember. But dreams that are more vivid, emotional and coherent (连贯的) seem to be better remembered.
If you are interested in improving your dream recall, there are a few tricks to try. One is drinking water before bed, because it will make you wake up at night to use the bathroom. These middle-of-the-night awakenings are frequently accompanied by dream recall. Repeatedly reminding yourself that you want to remember your dreams may increase your chances, and so does keeping a dream journal, some studies have suggested. Upon waking up, hang on to that fragile (脆弱的) dream memory: keep your eyes closed, stay still and replay the dream memory, until your hippocampus catches up and properly stores the memory.
27. What does the underlined word “fleeting” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Inactive. B. Short-lived. C. Significant. D. Slight.
28. You can remember your dreams more easily when you wake up probably because ______.
A. your dreams are vivid, emotional and coherent
B. you are forgetful and poor in remembering things
C. your hippocampus is active in receiving new information
D. your brain needs to start up to move dreams into long-term memory
29. Which of the following CANNOT help you to recall a dream
A. Keep reminding yourself of the need to remember your dreams.
B. Record what you can remember in your dreams upon awakening.
C. Improve the ability of your hippocampus to catch up information.
D. Think back on the things in your dreams directly after you wake up.
30. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To tell the importance of dreams.
B. To present some methods to recall dreams.
C. To explain our forgetfulness in dreams.
D. To analyze how our brain deal with information.

(研究人员发现,海马体是最后进入睡眠状态的区域之一,海马体是大脑中的一个结构,它对将信息从短期记忆转移到长期记忆很重要。)”和划线词前的“If the hippocampus is the last to go to sleep, it could very well be the last to wake up.( 如果海马体是最后一个入睡的,那么它很可能是最后一个醒来的。)”说明海马体能够将信息从短期记忆转移到长期记忆,但是它可能最后醒来,所以人们梦的记忆往往是短期的,从而推知划线词所在句“While this might explain why dream memories are so fleeting, it doesn’t mean that your hippocampus has been inactive throughout the night. (虽然这可以解释为什么梦的记忆如此fleeting,但这并不意味着你的海马体整晚都不活跃。)”其中划线词汇意思是“短暂的,短期的”。故选B项。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“But dreams that are more vivid, emotional and coherent (连贯的) seem to be better remembered. (但更生动、更情绪化、更连贯的梦似乎更容易被记住。)”可知,因为你的梦生动、情绪化、连贯,所以当你醒来时更容易地记住你的梦。故选A项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Repeatedly reminding yourself that you want to remember your dreams may increase your chances, and so does keeping a dream journal, some studies have suggested. Upon waking up, hang on to that fragile (脆弱的) dream memory: keep your eyes closed, stay still and replay the dream memory, until your hippocampus catches up and properly stores the memory.
通读全文,根据第一段中“But most often, you don’t remember any of your dreams. While the exact reason of why we can hardly recall our dreams is not fully known, scientists have gotten some insight into memory processes during sleep, leading to several ideas that may explain our forgetfulness. (但大多数情况下,你不记得你做过的任何梦。虽然我们很难回忆起自己做过的梦的确切原因还不完全清楚,但科学家们已经对睡眠中的记忆过程有了一些了解,并提出了一些可能解释我们健忘的想法。)”可知,文章的主要目的是解释我们在睡梦中的遗忘。故选C项。

【答案】 Dear fellow students,
In order to improve the students’ reading interest and encourage everyone to form the habit of reading, November is regarded as the Reading Month in our school, whose theme is Read A Good Book. It’s widely known that reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body(water is to fish). As far as I’m concerned, we should attach importance to it and take active part in it.
To start with, we are supposed to raise our awareness of reading and make our efforts to read everyday, which is of great help to see and think clearly. Moreover, it is also very important to read a good book, because reading a good book is like making a good friend. In terms of the recommended book, The Story of the Stone by Cao Xueqin would top my list. The book is not only a masterpiece of realism written in middle of the 18th century, but also a great combination of Chinese history, culture, arts and traditions. Please keep in mind that reading everyday should be part of our daily life.

The effort made by Adrian and his parents paid off. Adrian graduated with good grades and got into a top high school.

“It’s not like the plants are screaming,” says Lilach Hadany, an evolutionary biologist working at Tel Aviv University in Israel.
Cut tomato plants and dry or cut tobacco plants clicked too.

B. To have a better conversation with the plants.
C. To find out whether the plants did make sounds.
D. To keep the plant sounds within their hearing range.
25. In what way can microphones be used to benefit plants
A. Weed prevention. B. Pest control.
C. Temperature monitoring. D. Timely irrigation.
26. What still remains unknown to Hadany’s team
A. Whether the sounds of plants can travel far.
B. Whether animals can hear the sounds of plants.

A Inactive.
