Zebby beat thousands of others and won the title of National Cat of the Year, an award given by Cats Protection, a charity that rescues and rehomes cats. To win the award, Zebby first won the Family Fur-ever category, which honors cats that “make a family complete”.
Zebby’s owner, 66-year-old Genevieve Moss, lives alone in the UK, aside from her animal friend, of course. Living alone can be troublesome and her problems were further worsened by the fact that she can’t hear anything without her hearing aid. Once, she was robbed in the middle of the night. “I used to be scared to go to sleep, and I used to lie awake. But now, with Zebby, I can rest easily,” said Moss.
Zebby warns her of different sounds in their home. He also fetches the mail for Moss and drops it into the bedroom. He even takes her slippers (拖鞋) to her. “He seems to know that when the phone rings, he needs to tell me. At nighttime, if my security light goes on, he will wake me up by hitting my face gently. Sometimes to protect me, Zebby takes up his position at the front door to tell me it’s not happening when I try to leave the house,” Moss said.
“I am so proud of Zebby for showing the world how caring cats can be, and what a positive effect they can have on people’s lives,” she said. “I can’t imagine life without Zebby and I’m over the moon about his being honored with the National Cat Awards.”
Cats Protection’s National Cat Awards organizer Ashley Fryer said, “From the moment we read his entry form, we knew Zebby was something special. He is clearly devoted to Moss and their story highlights the powerful bond that exists between people and their cats. He shows a shining example of the joy and comfort a cat can bring.”

Tariq Qaiser, an architect, is trying to protect mangroves (红树林). The trees could save Pakistan’s largest city Karachi, sitting on the Arabia Sea, from natural disaster. He comes to Bundal Island several times a week to document the illegal cutting of mangrove trees. Very often, “You can’t hear a single bird because the chain saws (锯) are so loud. The trees are cut down illegally for firewood,” he says, shaking his head. Besides, developers clear the mangroves to make room for construction.
Karachi has a hot climate, and its concrete buildings and paved roads make it even hotter. Offshore, there are islands where mangroves grow. They could be the key to slowing climate change. Mangrove forests pull carbon dioxide out of the air, holding four times as much of the planet-warming gas as other forests can. They support diverse ecosystems. As sea levels rise with global warming, the trees could play a big role in protecting coastal cities like Karachi from flooding. Karachi’s mangroves are disappearing. But its numbers are rising in other parts of Pakistan. With replanting efforts, the country has tripled (三倍于) its mangrove coverage over the past 30 years.
Qaiser’s work may have worked. Recently, a court in Karachi declared Bundal Island’s mangroves to be protected forests. But unforested parts of the island remain unprotected, and developers want to build there. City officials say this could provide much-needed housing and bring in billions of dollars. They claim that some of that money could be used to plant mangroves in other parts of Pakistan.
Ecologist Rafiul Haq appreciates Qaiser’s “extraordinary work” educating the public about mangroves. But he wishes Oaiser would look at the bigger picture. “Only 7% of Pakistan’s mangroves are in Karachi,” Haq says. He thinks it’s wrong to focus on the losses in 7% of the country while ignoring the success in 93% of it. But Qaiser believes it’s important to protect every bit.
8. What do we know about Karachi’s mangroves
A. They occupy the building land.
B. They’re home to various birds.
C. They’re primarily being used as firewood.
D. They protect the city from climate disasters.
9. Why are efforts made to preserve the mangrove trees
A. Their birthplaces meet crisis.
B. They boast huge diversity.
C. Their bonds with nature are close.
D. They grow at a rapid speed.
10. What does the Karachi government plan to do
A. Grow mangroves in other areas.
B. Destroy buildings to grow mangroves.
C. Build more mangrove reserves.
D. Use mangroves to make profit.
11. What does Haq think of Qaiser’s work on Karachi’s mangroves
A. Challenging. B. Effective. C. Significant. D. Partial.
D
Historical heritages are human beings’ wisdom. Cultural relics, however, as time goes by, suffer different degrees of erosion (侵蚀). People used to protect cultural relics by hand work combing photographing and rubbing techniques. Although this method can keep the basic information, many important details are still ignored.
3D scanning technology features in fast measurement speed and accurate catching capacity. It’s good at collecting enough and accurate 3D data from different angles, which is beneficial to the restoration of cultural relics when coming into accidental damage. Experts can also virtually restore the heritages through the computer, and finish assistant researches via accurate 3D models.
For cultural relics’ protection, 3D printing contributes to displaying cultural relics. It provides people with more chances to get to know cultural relics and better understand human beings’ history.
Yucheng Museum has dug out a new collection of cultural relics in April 2019. One of the most important issues for archaeologists is data storage. Invited by Quimbaya ArtxTech, ScanTech conducted 3D scanning immediately on these relics by the 3D scanner. This handheld 3D ray scanner carries a big weight in acquiring very accurate 3D data and brings great convenience for further restorations and researches.
To avoid any damage, Yucheng Museum combined with 3D printing technology based on 3D data to reproduce 1:1 3D model of cultural relics for exhibition, which aims to make more people get close to history and pass on these precious cultural heritages.
Time flies and many thousand-year cultural treasures have gradually disappeared from our sight due to technical problems. However, 3D scanning and 3D printing technologies put forward very effective 3D solutions for cultural relic display and protection.
12. What is the disadvantage of the method people used to protect cultural relics
A. It eroded cultural relics in a degree.
B. It made the research of cultural relics inconvenient.
C. It damaged the restoration of cultural relics.
D. It took no notice of many important information.
13. How is 3D scanning technology applied to heritage conservation
A. Gather the data of cultural relics efficiently.
B. Restore a damaged cultural relic on a computer.
C. Evaluate the original looks of cultural relics.
D. Restore cultural relics in the real world.
14. Why is Yucheng Museum mentioned in the text
A To emphasize the value of cultural relics.
B. To compare the two 3D technologies.
C. To show the application of 3D digitalization.
D. To draw more attention to cultural museums.
15. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Scientifle ways of restoring cultural relics.
B. The rapid development of3D technologies.
C. 3D technologies for protecting cultural relics.
D. Many effective functions of 3D technologies

Thomas watched the irrigation canal (灌溉渠) for a sign of water. It looked as dry as he felt inside. Thomas's thoughts were interrupted as his younger sister, Maggie, came skipping across the field.
"What are you giving Mama for her birthday " she asked.
Thomas felt his stomach turn. He had forgotten that Mama's birthday, the first since they left their hometown, was tomorrow. "It's a surprise, Maggie," he answered. It was the truth.
Even he would be surprised.
Thomas would wish to be back in the mountains of their hometown. Surely Mama would want the same. At least it rained there. Each time it did, Mama, Thomas, and Maggie would sit on the front porch and watch for a rainbow. Then each of them picked out a favorite color in the rainbow. Mama always gave the same answer. "Turquoise (蓝绿色,绿松石)," she would finally say with a dreamy smile, pointing at the sky. "Squeezed in tight, between the blue and green. Close your eyes and you can see it. If you could touch it, it would feel cool, like a breeze blowing across the stream."
Thomas was discouraged. The sun would be setting soon, and he still had nothing to give his mother. What he saw around were rocks and sand. He picked up a large, flat rock, scooped up the dirt and watched it fall to the ground. Suddenly, something caught his eye. A speck of color peeked through the dirt.
"Hey, what's this " he asked.
"Let's find out," Maggie yelled. Thomas and Maggie dug with their fingers and uncovered a small, round stone. In the center, there was a tiny hole.
"That's just a turquoise bead (珠子)," Thomas exclaimed. "My friend Jack's sister has a jar full of them."
"Let's see if there are more," Maggie got excited.

并在最后一句“Meanwhile, here are the stories behind other brand names.(同时,以下是其他品牌背后的故事。)” 故选A。
根据第四段中的“Nike was named for the Greek goddess of victory.(耐克是以希腊的胜利女神命名的。)” 故选A。
根据第三段中的“give his company a Danish-sounding name”和第六段“is a contraction of the Danish phrase leg godt, meaning ‘play well’”可知,乐高和哈根达斯都与丹麦语有关。故选C。

4. What can we infer about Zebby
A. He was once a homeless cat.
B. He helped prevent a robbery.
C He is highly sensitive to sounds.
D. He gives Moss a feeling of security.
5. To Moss, Zebby fails to play the role of __________.
A. a cleaner B. a watchman C. a companion D. a postman
6. What does the underlined phrase “over the moon” probably mean in the fourth paragraph
A. Inspired. B. Astonished. C. Moved. D. Excited.
7. Which can be the best title of the text
A. Amazing Cat Making a Family Complete
B. Award-winning Cat Listening for His Owner

根据第二段中Moss所说的话“I used to be scared to go to sleep, and I used to lie awake. But now, with Zebby, I can rest easily (我曾经害怕睡觉,我曾经躺在床上睡不着。但现在,有了Zebby,我可以安心了)”可知,因为Zebby的存在,曾经睡觉困难的Moss可以安心入睡了。由此可知,Zebby给了Moss一种安全感。故选D项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“He also fetches the mail for Moss and drops it into the bedroom. He even takes her slippers (拖鞋) to her. (他还为Moss取邮件,并把它扔进了卧室。他甚至把她的拖鞋拿给她)”和“He seems to know that when the phone rings, he needs to tell me. At nighttime, if my security light goes on, he will wake me up by hitting my face gently. (他似乎知道电话一响,他就得告诉我。晚上,如果我的安全灯亮着,他会轻轻地打我的脸把我叫醒)”可知,Zebby像邮递员一样为Moss取邮件,充当她的守夜人,也是她的陪伴者,但没有扮演清洁工的角色。故选A项。
根据画线词的上文“I can’t imagine life without Zebby (我无法想象没有Zebby的生活)”可知,Moss对Zebby的存在心怀感激,再结合画线词的下文“about his being honored with the National Cat Awards (他被授予国家猫奖)”可推知,Moss会对Zebby得到这样的奖项感到非常兴奋,over the moon意思应该是“兴奋的”,与excited意思一致。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Zebby beat thousands of others and won the title of National Cat of the Year (Zebby击败了成千上万只猫,赢得了“年度国家猫”的称号)”和第三段中“Zebby warns her of different sounds in their home. (Zebby警告她家里不同的声音)”可知,文章围绕名叫Zebby的猫展开,讲述了他和听力有问题的主人Moss生活在一起,帮助她听各种声音,为她做各种事情,让她变得安心,对她的生活产生了积极的影响,从而赢得了“年度国家猫”的称号。因此,B项“倾听他的主人的获奖猫”突出了文章核心内容,最适合作为标题。故选B项。

D. Partial.

I have an idea," Thomas said cheerfully. "We can give Mom turquoise for her birthday, because she likes rainbows like that." "I think it's a good idea," Maggie said. "Mother will love it. Let's go back to digging. We'll find as many as we can, picking the prettiest. The more, the better." Thomas and Maggie immediately began digging, hoping to find more such small stones. They were digging for stones, and dark fell before they knew it.
Early the next morning, Thomas and Maggie set a small package on the table. Inside was the turquoise they had dug. It's a birthday present for their mother. "Mom, come here quickly. What do you think is in the parcel " Maggie shouted. Mother came out of the kitchen and looked very surprised. When their mother opened the package, she saw the beautiful stones like a rainbow. Mother said "thank you" happily, saying it was the best birthday present she had ever received. Thomas and Maggie laughed happily.
