Most students, when asked about their ideal graduation gift, would probably reply, “Acar”, or “Money for a deposit on a house”. Cai Kaiyuan,21, made a different choice. As a graduation gift to himself, he decided to work as a volunteer teacher in a remote village in Tibet.
Cai, a senior majoring in electrical engineering at Huan Railway Professional Technology College, originally planned to cycle from Sichuan to Tibet. During his journey, Cai’s idea for a different graduation gift to himself began to take shape. “I did not know beforehand what the journey would mean to me. I just want to gain a unique experience and have pleasure in appreciating the view there,” he said.
It turned out cycling on a plateau (高原) was extremely challenging. And it has kept changing his view on life. Cai’s fingers even became frostbitten while cycling up a 5008-metre-high mountain, where temperatures often dropped to 18 below zero. At night, the ice covered the road and he fell off his bike three times. The lack of oxygen made him feel dizzy and weak. “At the most serious moment, I felt that my life was on the line,” said Cai.
However, he also gained something unexpected. At Ya’an, a city in Sichuan, he met a group of tourists who are also university students. A girl called Wu Ling told him that she planned to work as a teacher in a primary school in Tibet after her journey. He was impressed by the idea as she looked thin and weak.
It was not until he reached a family-run hotel in Shigats e that Cai’s spirits began to rise. The hotel manager’s two daughters enjoyed talking with him. The kids asked about his experiences on his trip, and showed him the beautiful local lakes. “They told me that they always liked to talk to guests, as they wanted to improve their Mandarin,” he said. “Their parents and many locals can only speak Tibetan. ”
Cai was touched by the girls’story. Their situation is tough and the local people have little chance to learn Mandarin because the schools are short of teachers. “I want to do something to improve the situation for kids like them,” said Cai. His parents finally gave their agreement and his teachers also supported him.
4. According to the passage, Cai Kaiyuan’s graduation gift to himself is ______.
A. to have money for a deposit on a house B. to travel by cycling from Sichuan to Tibet
C. to own a new car and marry a slim girl D. to work as a volunteer teacher in a Tibetan school
5. What words can be used to describe Cai’s journey to Tibet
A. Unique and pleasant. B. Freezing cold and boring.
C. Challenging but rewarding. D. Relaxing but unexpected.
6. The underlined phrase “on the line” in the third paragraph means “______”.
A. making a phone call B. at risk
C. very hopeless D. very painful

C. give advice on how to travel to Tibet D. encourage us to be a teacher in Tibet
D 5. C 6. B 7. A

C
Over 7,000 species around the world are considered endangered. That number doesn’t even include the plants, animals, and other lifeforms that are listed by some scientists as vulnerable, critically endangered, or extinct in the wild.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) maintains the most-comprehensive list of endangered species around the world. The Red List of Threatened Species, as it’s called, judges each species on five different standards for an in-depth scientific approach. According to the IUCN, an endangered species is one that meets any one of the following criteria (标准): a 50%-70% population decrease over 10 years, a total geographic area less than 5,000 square kilometers, a population size less than 2,500 adults, a restricted population of 250 adults, or a statistical prediction that it will go extinct within the next 20 years.
Though the IUCN’s Red List covers a wide range of what qualifies as an endangered species, it doesn’t quite say how a species reaches those low points. Prepare to feel guilty: the most common factor when it comes to species decline is human intervention. Loss of habitat, the introduction of a foreign species into the environment, hunting, pollution, disease, and loss of genetic variation (基因变异) are all causes of species decline and most often are a result of human activities. Take the bald eagle for example: the rise in human population and urban development of North America limited the animal’s habitat; an increase in hunting the eagles for sport lowered their population size; and the use of the pesticide DDT on farms harmed the animal’s reproductive capabilities.
But even though humans are the number one cause of species decline, classifying species as endangered encourages action to reverse the effects of human intervention. Conservation efforts by the US Fish and Wildlife Service criminalized (使非法) the hunting of bald eagles and the use of the pesticide DDT in the mid- to late 20th century. The effect was positive, as bald eagles have been on the rise and were taken off the endangered species list in 1995.
8. Which of the following species can be considered endangered
A. One that will go extinct within the next 50 years.
B. One whose population size is less than 5,000 adults.
C. One whose habitat is less than 2,500 square kilometers.
D. One whose population decreases 20% over twenty years.
9. What does paragraph 3 focus on
A. The causes of species decline.
B The disadvantages of the pesticide.
C. A list of worldwide endangered species.
D. Common features of endangered species.
10. Why is the bald eagle mentioned as an example in the last paragraph
A. To show its rareness.
B. To blame humans for its decline.
C. To stress its importance in nature.
D. To show the meaning of ranking it endangered.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Entertainment. B. Health. C. Science. D. Education.
C 9. A 10. D 11. C

根据第二段“The Red List of Threatened Species, as it’s called, judges each species on five different standards for an in-depth scientific approach. According to the IUCN, an endangered species is one that meets any one of the following criteria (标准): a 50%-70% population decrease over 10 years, a total geographic area less than 5,000 square kilometers, a population size less than 2,500 adults, a restricted population of 250 adults, or a statistical prediction that it will go extinct within the next 20 years.(《濒危物种红色名录》根据五种不同的标准对每个物种进行了深入的科学评估。根据世界自然保护联盟的定义,濒危物种是指满足以下任何一个标准的物种:在10年内种群数量减少50%-70%,总栖息地面积小于5000平方公里,种群规模小于2500个成年,250个成年的限制种群,或者统计预测它将在未来20年内灭绝)”可知,栖息地小于2500平方公里的动物可以被视为濒危物种。故选C项。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Though the IUCN’s Red List covers a wide range of what qualifies as an endangered species, it doesn’t quite say how a species reaches those low points. Prepare to feel guilty: the most common factor when it comes to species decline is human intervention. Loss of habitat, the introduction of a foreign species into the environment, hunting, pollution, disease, and loss of genetic variation (基因变异) are all causes of species decline and most often are a result of human activities. Take the bald eagle for example: the rise in human population and urban development of North America limited the animal’s habitat; an increase in hunting the eagles for sport lowered their population size; and the use of the pesticide DDT on farms harmed the animal’s reproductive capabilities.(尽管世界自然保护联盟的红色名录涵盖了很多有资格成为濒危物种的物种,但它并没有完全说明一个物种是如何达到这些低点的。 故选A项。
根据最后一段“But even though humans are the number one cause of species decline, classifying species as endangered encourages action to reverse the effects of human intervention. Conservation efforts by the US Fish and Wildlife Service criminalized (使非法) the hunting of bald eagles and the use of the pesticide DDT in the mid- to late 20th century. The effect was positive, as bald eagles have been on the rise and were taken off the endangered species list in 1995.(但是,尽管人类是物种减少的头号原因,将物种分类为濒危物种鼓励采取行动扭转人类干预的影响。在20世纪中后期,美国鱼类和野生动物管理局的保护努力将猎杀秃鹰和使用杀虫剂DDT定为犯罪。效果是积极的,因为秃头鹰的数量一直在上升,并于1995年从濒危物种名单上除名)”可知,本段提到秃鹰作为一个例子,是为了说明将其列为濒危物种的意义,有效的提升了秃头鹰的数量。故选D项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Over 7,000 species around the world are considered endangered. That number doesn’t even include the plants, animals, and other lifeforms that are listed by some scientists as vulnerable, critically endangered, or extinct in the wild.(世界上有超过7000个物种被认为是濒危物种。这个数字甚至不包括被一些科学家列为脆弱、极度濒危或在野外灭绝的植物、动物和其他生命形式)”以及纵观全文可知,本文介绍了国际自然保护联盟对濒危物种的判断标准,并阐明了导致物种濒危最常见的原因,所以本文可能来自报纸的自然科学板块。故选C项。
D
How did nearsighted people manage in the pre-glasses past Have you ever thought about this Aristotle may have written the first observations of myopia around 350 B.C. Because their eyeballs are too long, people with this condition can see objects that are close by, but distant objects tend to look blurry.
Neil Handley, a museum curator, said not much is known about how people dealt with myopia before the first lenses for nearsighted people were invented in the 15th century in Europe. And he noted that “even in the history of the invention of spectacles, that is a late development.”
There are 13th-century European examples of handheld convex lenses that were used to treat age-related vision loss known as presbyopia. But the technology wasn’t applied to treat nearsightedness for another 200 years.
“Because of the way that lens is held, you can see through it, and the artist has captured the effect that the glass has,” Handley said. Myopia could be something of a modern condition. Rates of myopia have risen sharply in recent decades, and researchers have projected that half the world will be myopic by 2050.
Doctors are still trying to figure out the cause behind this trend. Some have blamed genetic causes or an increase in studying and screen time.
It’s likely that myopia didn’t affect as many people in the past as it does now. Handley said the late creation of nearsighted glasses suggests that treating the small number of people with myopia wasn’t regarded as a priority and that people could have gotten by with this condition by making some adaptations in their lifestyle. Or, maybe there was more of an emphasis on putting people in jobs that were suited to their ability to see, he said.
For example, people with myopia were historically valued in artisan contexts, such as medieval European monasteries, where illuminating manuscripts and painting required making tiny, precise skills.
12. What can be learned about the first myopia glasses
A. They came into people’s view around 350 B.C.
B. They could help shorten people’s eyeballs.
C. They didn’t come out until the 15th century.
D. They were initially designed for old people.
13. What does the underlined word “projected” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Noticed. B. Predicted. C. Doubted. D. Conducted.
14. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A. People in the past didn’t develop myopia.
B. My opia could be cured by changing one’s lifestyle.
C. People with myopia could also lead a normal life.
D. Most art-related jobs favored near sighted people.
15. What does the passage mainly tell us
A. Glasses for nearsighted people have developed a lot.
B. Nearsightedness is increasing at an alarming rate.
C. Various reasons contribute to modern myopia.
D. Myopia was not so disturbing in the past.
C 13. B 14. C 15. D

根据第二段中的“Neil Handley, a museum curator, said not much is known about how people dealt with myopia before the first lenses for nearsighted people were invented in the 15th century in Europe.(博物馆馆长Neil Handley表示,在15世纪欧洲发明第一批近视镜片之前,人们对近视的治疗方法知之甚少)”可知,第一副近视眼镜直到15世纪才问世。
根据划线词上文“Rates of myopia have risen sharply in recent decades, and researchers have (近几十年来,近视率急剧上升,研究人员)”以及后文“that half the world will be myopic by 2050 (到2050年,世界上一半的人将目光短浅)”可知,近视问题近几年越来越严重,研究者预测,到2050年全世界将近一半的人都会患上近视。
根据倒数第二段中的“Handley said the late creation of nearsighted glasses suggests that treating the small number of people with myopia wasn’t regarded as a priority and that people could have gotten by with this condition by making some adaptations in their lifestyle (Handley说,近视眼眼镜的发明很晚,这表明治疗少数近视患者并不是优先考虑的问题,人们本可以通过调整自己的生活方式来应对这种情况)”可推知,近视的人也可以过正常的生活。
根据第一段中的“How did nearsighted people manage in the pre-glasses past (在没有眼镜的时代,近视的人是如何生活的?)”

Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed. A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let’s go and have a look!” But Henry refused, “It’s none of our business. We’d better go home and don’t get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.
But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

Paragraph 1:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
At that moment, Henry happened to pass by.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Possible Version
A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny. That afternoon after school, Ronny was bathing with some of his new friends in the river happily. Suddenly, he was stuck in the mud and couldn’t get out. He struggled hard but he was still trapped. He screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could. They were so scared and did not even try to help him.
At that moment, Henry happened to pass by. He heard the screams and ran to the river as soon as possible. Seeing Ronny was almost drowned, Henry took off his clothes immediately and jumped into the water without any hesitation. He reached Ronny just as he was sinking the last time. With great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Ronny to the shore in time. Henry was happy to help his friend, though he was extremely tired.

However he also gained something unexpected.
7. The purpose of writing this passage is to ______.
A. tell us about an unusual graduation gift B. introduce a dangerous journey to us
C. give advice on how to travel to Tibet D. encourage us to be a teacher in Tibet
A Noticed. B. Predicted. C. Doubted. D. Conducted.
