If you are reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s. The oh-ohs. The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking, too. Right But what do other people think about your generation
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face-down generation” because you use your phone so much. They wonder how you will deal with school, friends and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies(自拍)to become successful in real life—or “IRL”, as you would say
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoilt (溺爱) and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents” who were always there to guide and help their children with a busy schedule filled with homework and after-school activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today’s youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Noble Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you’re one of the oh-ohs, there’s no reason to be worried about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation. Chances are that you do GR8(great)and LOL(laugh out loud).
4 Who is this passage written for
A. The teenagers B. The teachers
C. The parents D. The oh-ohs
5. What do helicopter parents always do
A. Help and direct their children. B. Do homework instead of children.
C. Guide children to face challenges. D. Plan a busy schedule for children.
6. How does the writer feel about the younger generation
A. Anxious. B. Confident. C. Satisfied. D. Helpless
7. What can we learn according to the passage
A. Parents should put down their phones.
B. Young people should be better educated.
C. The oh-ohs should be hopeful about the future.
D. Face-down generation should raise their heads.

As a mother and a professional working full time, I spent all of my 30s saying yes. Saying yes to things I wanted to do, but a lot of the time saying yes to things I disliked. This was a people-pleasing technique that would affect people’s opinion of me: the woman who could do it all, so that I can obtain a nice fame in their mind.
Little did I know that I was also developing an autoimmune(自身免疫的) disease, which I have to believe was my body’s way of telling me to slow down. I had severely swollen joints and brain fog but I pushed through so that I could look in the mirror at the end of the day and feel “accomplished”. The only things I was accomplishing were bad health and bed habits.
And then a series of events changed everything: serious medical issues and losing my job. It took all that to help me see how intensely burnt out I was. I spent a lot of time thinking about where I had to be next instead of being present in the moment. But now, I wake up each day knowing that everything on my schedule has been purposefully agreed to.
Looking back, I had the capability to suffer the pressure to say yes. I also felt it necessary to say yes, from driving people to the airport to seeing family every Friday night. I always wanted to solve everyone’s problems and offered sound and immediate solutions. It was one big “yes” to everything.
I was everyone’s cheerleader, but forgot how to cheer for myself along the way. But saying no is being my own cheerleader. And it’s not saying no to caring for family and friends. Instead, it’s a minor change in mindset, taking a pause before automatically agreeing. I take a breath, do a quick count of my energy and ability before jumping in.
8. Why did the author say yes to things she disliked
A. To please her boss. B. To prove her profession.
C. To push herself to the limit. D. To earn herself a good reputation.
9. How did the author deal with the changes in her body
A. She got rid of bad habits. B. She thought little of them.
C. She slowed down her life pace. D. She paid more attention to her health.
10. Which word can best describe the author
A. Purposeful. B. Stubborn. C. Reflective. D. Encouraging.
11. What will the author do before saying yes
A. Find a cheerleader. B. Evaluate her situation.
C. Breathe in some fresh air. D. Seek help from her friends.
D
Fatima Bushin was losing her sight and was scared. She said what worried her most wasn’t the fear of a long, painful journey to blindness. She feared being unable to feed her family because blindness would keep her from working, as mothers do. The tragedy is that Bushin’s condition was preventable and, if caught in time, stoppable. She was among thousands of women in Tanzania who suffered from trachoma (沙眼), an infectious disease affecting largely poor communities in developing countries. Trachoma is one of neglected tropical diseases, or NTDs, so named because they receive less attention than other tropical diseases.
All NTDs can be controlled or cured entirely with known public health approaches and interventions. Improved sanitation (环境卫生), medicines and medical procedures have produced truly remarkable results in preventing and controlling NTDs, including trachoma, in some of the world’s poorest communities. Preventing, controlling and curing these diseases puts out poverty’s fire at its base.
We know it can be done. Through long-term efforts, several of these NTDs have been stamped out in some countries such as Laos. To wipe out extreme poverty around the world. many countries continue to invest in what is one of the most successful foreign assistance programs. For example, U.S. Agency for International Development programs to combat NTDs have reached nearly 300 million people affected by diseases that can spoil the patients’ appearance or weaken the patients physically.
For Bushin, the story ends well. Through foreign assistance program, she was able to lave the surgery needed to treat trachoma and save her eyesight. The surgery is relatively simple, performed in an hour at an outpatient clinic, and costs less than $300. In return, Bushin avoided a lifelong disability that would have recondemned her family to poverty with little hope for escape.
Jan. 30 marks the World NTD Day, a day that global public health experts say is needed to focus attention on the fight against tropical diseases. The success of the global fight against NTDs is good news for millions of people. It has been life-changing for a mother in Tanzania who continues to be able to provide for her family thanks to the constant efforts being made that kept her family out of poverty by saving her eyesight.
12. What was the greatest concern of Bushin
A. The possible loss of her eyesight.
B. The slim chance of getting rid of poverty.
C. The potential inability to support her family.
D. The deliberate neglect of her by her parents.
13. What does the underlined part “stamped out” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean
A. Caught. B. Removed. C. Tracked. D. Analyzed.
14. In what tone does the author describe the treatment of NTDs
A. Critical. B. Regretful. C. Humorous. D. Positive.
15. What can we infer from the text
A. NTDs could be cured earlier than expected.
B. Poverty and disease tend to be largely connected.
C. Infectious diseases will be the biggest global issue.
D. International cooperation is a must for treating a disease.

7. What can we learn according to the passage
A. Parents should put down their phones.
B. Young people should be better educated.
C. The oh-ohs should be hopeful about the future.
D. Face-down generation should raise their heads.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. B 7. C

Little did I know that I was also developing an autoimmune(自身免疫) disease, which I have to believe was my body’s way of telling me to slow down.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11. B

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“I had severely swollen joints and brain fog but I pushed through so that I could look in the mirror at the end of the day and feel ‘accomplished’.(我有严重的关节肿胀和脑雾,但我坚持了下来,这样我就可以在一天结束时照镜子,感觉‘很有成就感’。)”可知,作者在身体出现问题后依然硬撑,只为了让自己在一天结束的时候有所谓的“成就感”,由此可推知,她对身体的变化没有太在意。故选B.
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“It took all that to help me see how intensely burnt out I was. I spent a lot of time thinking about where I had to be next instead of being present in the moment.(这一切让我明白了自己是多么地积劳成疾。我花了很多时间思考我下一步该去哪里,而不是在当下。)”可知,作者在健康出问题和失业后对自己的生活方式进行了反思,由此可推测出,她是一个具有反思意识的人。故选C。

【答案】12. C 13. B 14. D 15. B

【答案】Dear Jackie
Learning that you’re suffering from peer pressure, I’m writing to give you some tips.
Peer pressure comes naturally in your teenage years, however, you should take it seriously and learn to deal with it if you’re too anxious.
First, you should be careful when choosing friends. You may try to get together with friends with similar values so as to reduce the pressure from different thoughts. Besides, you must be confident. Paying attention to your own feelings and beliefs about what is right will help you make your own decisions. Additionally, when finding peer pressure is too great, you may as well turn to people you trust.
Hopefully my suggestions will help you.
Yours
Li Hua
