Distance learning has become the new form of education since schools closed, and teachers have adapted — with the help of some truly amazing online applications.
Google Classroom
This popular application allows teachers to create online forums to share courses, news, or lessons as well as a platform to assign, collect, and give feedback on student work. I’ve used Google Classroom for years, and it has become the cornerstone of my classroom throughout distance learning.
Google Forms
This application is often used to gather information in a variety of contexts. Its test feature can be enabled to block users from opening other windows. It also offers auto-grading for multiple-choice tests. It has become a daily application in my classes during distance learning. I use it for pre-assessments, tests, and surveys.
Flipgrid
Flipgrid is a free online application that allows students and teachers to record short online videos Teachers can easily create accounts and then within accounts create “classrooms.” From there, teachers can create posts for students to respond to via short videos.
Google Meet
Google Meet is an online meeting platform where teachers can share their screens with all participants to see as well as record the meeting. I’ve recorded all of my daily lessons and then posted the recordings to Google Classroom at the request of my students. This is a practice I’d like to continue even after distance learning as students really like the option to return to a recording of the day’s lesson to review it at their own pace.
1. Which application is perfect for tests
A. Flipgrid B. Google Meet C. Google Forms D. Google Classroom
2. What is a typical feature of Google Meet
A. Responding to posts with short videos. B. Recording lessons for review.
C. Creating online forums to share news. D. Auto-grading students’ assignments.
3. Where can the text be found

One of the most popular street food found in China is no doubt the barbecue. A new series, called Chinese Barbecue, tells the story of this popular food cooked over hot coals on just about every street corner in cities and towns across the country. Barbecued meat is an important part of people’s nightlife.
Shown on June 20, the series has had more than 80 million clicks on the video site . To find the most popular barbecue stalls (摊位), the production team travelled to more than 500 locations in 30 cities across the country. Some viewers compare Chinese Barbecue to Midnight Diner, a Japanese TV series telling stories from late-night informal Japanese bars.
“I’m happy to hear this comparison because Midnight Diner is a good program, and we share the same topic — night food,” Chinese Barbecue’s director Chen Yingjie said. “However, in terms of the tone, they are quite different.” He said that Midnight Diner focused more on food itself, though there was some conversation while people were eating. In contrast, the night food scene of Chinese people means joy and a more lively spirit. People eating these barbecue snacks develop a feeling of connection, which can be a cure for loneliness.
The barbecue, regarded as the most ordinary and common night street snack, is different from home-made food by mothers as that is a symbol of family, and kinship. The barbecue is where you go to become connected to people in society. And unlike official business lunches, during which people are rather reserved and polite, the barbecue lets people relax with old friends and new friends, leaving a lasting impression of friendship.
The world, as a whole, holds deep-rooted good feelings toward the barbecue, either for the taste or the warmth produced by fire. “What we should do is present the Chinese barbecue just the way it is because with its special ingredients (食材), ways of cooking, and more importantly, the special environment and people, the world will recognize it and might fall in love with it just as we do,” said Chen.
4. What does Chinese Barbecue center on
A. The diverse street food. B. The nightlife in large cities.
C. The barbecued foods across China. D. The story of barbecue stall owners.
5. How does Chinese Barbecue differ from Midnight Diner
A. It focuses more on the feelings. B. It has less conversation.
C. It shows the eating habits. D. It targets at the lonely.
6. What can be inferred about the barbecue from paragraph 4
A. It influences people’s lifestyle.
B. It plays a role in people’s relationship.
C. It is more delicious than home-made food.
D. It serves as formal business lunches sometimes.
7. Why did Chen Yingjie choose the barbecue as the topic of the series
A. To help the world understand China. B. To research a special way of cooking.
C. To show the feature of Chinese food. D. To introduce the history of the barbecue.
C
The ancient silk road was a once in a life time journey. It was one of the most important milestones of trade and culture in world history, and the pioneer, Zhang Qian, could not be easily forgotten by history. He was an outstanding diplomat, traveler and explorer in the Han Dynasty of China, honored as the “the first Chinese to open their eyes to see the world” and “the Columbus of the east”.
In 138 BC, at the reign of Emperor Wudi, Zhang Qian was sent to the west of China for an alliance with the Yue-chi people to fight against the Xiongnu. He started his trip from Chang’an(now Xi’an in Shanxi Province)to Longxi(in Gansu Province). Along the way, no matter how difficult the environment was, his faith was firm. But unfortunately, Zhang was caught by the Xiongnu people just as he left Han, and was held prisoner for ten years.
Zhang finally managed to escape with some of his men and continued to travel west without any dry food or drinking water. Due to the excellent skill of shooting arrows, they survived by eating some birds and other animals along the way. When Zhang at last reached the Yue-chi in Northern India, he was disappointed to find that they didn’t want to fight against the Xiongnu people. On the return journey, Zhang Qian and his men were again caught. It was not until 125 BC that they returned to Chang’an.
Though Zhang hadn’t finished his mission, he brought back first-hand information on the geography, ethnography, and societies of Central Asia. The paths Zhang Qian explored later served as the highways connecting Europe, the Middle East, Mesopotamia, Central Asia, and East modities, crops, animals, religions, ideas, music, technology, and artifacts have been transported by diplomats, merchants and soldiers along this network of highways, which have, since the 19th century been known as the “Silk Road”. Zhang Qian has been remembered as the great explorer that opened up a new era of cultural exchange between East and West with long-lasting treasure well observable today.

First-grade classrooms with poor environments—not enough resources, teachers who feel disrespected by colleagues—have been linked to a higher number of mental health problems in students, according to a new study.
The study doesn’t prove that classrooms that face more challenges directly cause mental health problems in kids. However, “being in a classroom with a lack of resources might disadvantageously affect children’s mental health because children are frustrated or disheartened by their surroundings,” said study lead author Melissa A. Milkie, a sociology professor at the University of Maryland.
“Teachers may also be more discouraged when they can’t teach properly due to the fact that they are missing key parts,” she explained.
Milkie said the study shows that schools and teachers play important roles in children’s mental health. “I think parents care a lot about their children’s mental health—their emotional and behavioral well-being—but we as a society don’t focus on that as much as we talk about and think about academic outcomes,” Milkie said.
The study is based on interviews with the parents and teachers of about 10,700 first-graders in the United States. The researchers found that students in classrooms with fewer resources, in terms of inadequate teaching materials and teachers who didn’t feel supported by colleagues, were more likely to experience problems in several mental health areas.
For teachers, to get the support and encouragement that they need from colleagues, including the principal (校长), is likely important for whether the teachers are able to create a classroom climate that helps children grow healthily. If teachers are feeling stressed out because they aren’t getting what they need from their colleagues, that stress may carry over to the kids.
Although the current study only looked at students in first grade, Milkie thinks the findings would probably be very similar in higher grades. “I would be surprised if there were different findings for older children,” she said.
12. Which of the following is given the most attention by the society according to Milkie
A. Children’s mental health. B. Students’ academic outcomes.
C. Teachers’ welfare. D. Classroom environments.
13. How can we help teachers create a health y classroom climate 2
A. Support and encourage them. B. Make students feel relaxed.
C. Help them with their family life. D. Reduce their teaching tasks.
14. How does Milkie think the findings will be if a study is carried out in higher grades
A. Surprising. B. Uncertain. C. Almost the same. D. Completely different.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Teachers Should Have Enough Teaching Materials
B. First-grade Classrooms Need Better Environments
C. Classroom Environments May Affect Kids’ Mental Health
D. Schools Can Pay More Attention to Students’ Mental Health

【8题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“The ancient silk road was a once in a life time journey. It was one of the most important milestones of trade and culture in world history, and the pioneer, Zhang Qian, could not be easily forgotten by history. He was an outstanding diplomat, traveler and explorer in the Han Dynasty of China, honored as the “the first Chinese to open their eyes to see the world” and “the Columbus of the east”.(古丝绸之路是一次千载难逢的时间旅行。它是世界历史上贸易和文化最重要的里程碑之一,而其先驱张骞是历史不会轻易忘记的。他是中国汉代杰出的外交家、旅行家和探险家,被誉为“中国人第一个睁眼看世界的人”和“东方的哥伦布”。)”以及最后一段中“Zhang Qian has been remembered as the great explorer that opened up a new era of cultural exchange between East and West with long-lasting treasure well observable today.( 张骞被人们铭记为开启东西方文化交流新时代的伟大探险家,时至今日,他的宝藏依然历久弥新)”可知,首段提到了张骞是中国汉代一位杰出的外交家、旅行家和探险家,并被誉为“第一个睁开眼睛看世界的中国人”和“东方的哥伦布”,最后又提到了他带回了关于中亚地理、人种学和社会的第一手信息。由此可见,本文主要是讲述了张骞与丝绸之路的故事。故选D。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词前面的内容“In 138 BC, at the reign of Emperor Wudi, Zhang Qian was sent to the west of China(公元前138年,汉武帝时期,张骞被派往中国西部)”以及划线词后面的内容“with the Yue-chi people to fight against the Xiongnu(和越池人一起对抗匈奴)”可知,张骞被派往西部与越人结盟,意思是与他们达成一个协议。故划线词与C选项“agreement(协议)”为同义词。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Commodities, crops, animals, religions, ideas, music, technology, and artifacts have been transported by diplomats, merchants and soldiers along this network of highways, which have, since the 19th century been known as the “Silk Road”. But unfortunately, Zhang was caught by the Xiongnu people just as he left Han, and was held prisoner for ten years.( 一路上,无论环境多么艰难,他的信念都是坚定的。但不幸的是,就在他离开汉的时候,被匈奴人抓住了,被囚禁了十年)”以及第三段中“Zhang finally managed to escape with some of his men and continued to travel west without any dry food or drinking water. (张最终和他的一些手下成功逃脱,在没有干粮和饮用水的情况下继续向西行进)”以及最后一段中“Though Zhang hadn’t finished his mission, he brought back first-hand information on the geography, ethnography, and societies of Central Asia. (虽然张还没有完成他的使命,但他带回了关于中亚地理、人种学和社会的第一手资料)”可知,尽管张骞在与匈奴的战斗中被抓住并作为囚徒,但他最终成功逃脱并继续他的旅行,最终带回了有关中亚地理、人种学和社会的第一手信息。这显示了他的勇敢和坚定的意志。因此,A选项“Brave and strong-willed(勇敢而坚定)”是最合适的描述。故选A。

【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. C
