Lights, camera, action! Have you ever dreamed of being a director At age 29, Di Di already has almost 10 years of directing experience under his belt. Through the media company he founded, he makes advertising and promotional videos, including for Tsinghua University.
For Di, becoming a director is “an adventure based on interest”. Majoring in journalism, he got into directing by chance. “In 2013, I came up with an idea for Tsinghua’s admissions video but couldn’t find a director,” Di said. “So I decided to be the director myself! I ended up really enjoying the process of being creative and working with a team. That was when I knew I wanted to be a director.”
While many people think that directors are experts at art, Di found that directors are, in fact, experts at management. “Only one-third of my time is spent on set. Despite the pressure, Di gets great joy from making an impact through his works. In 2019, he made a film for Tsinghua, which tells the story of a group of first-generation college students. It was viewed more than 15 million times on social media and became a hot top 20 trending topic on Sina Weibo. One month before the national college entrance exam in 2020, Di released a feature film encouraging high school students to keep working hard after the exam was pushed back by one month.

Most of us have heard of the 3Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. It is the core principle of a sustainable (可持续的) life, but few of us can apply it in our own lives. Now, there’s a “lab” you can explore and discover a way toward living sustainably.
3R Lab is located in Xuhui district, Shanghai. It offers exhibitions, activities and goods that showcase the 3R principle. The key to a sustainable life, according to Vincent T. M. Fong, the 32-year-old from Hong Kong who created the lab, is to make it a long-term promise. “A sustainable life should be sustainable itself in the first place. You can’t lead a sustainable life on a whim. Small and comfortable changes are exactly what you need,” Fong said.
The lab regularly hosts ugly fruit markets, offering these strange fruits which are often thrown away by traditional markets and consumers at a quite attractive price. “They’re thrown away simply because of their appearance. Buying fruit regardless of how they look reduces food waste significantly in our daily life,” Fong commented.
A water tank with two types of straws is another equipment in the lab. “One type is made from normal plastics widely used in our daily life while the other is from PHA, a new replacement for plastics, and the water is sourced from the Suzhou River,” explained Ni Li, an employee of the lab. Visitors can see how the PHA straws degrade (降解) into a thin layer in just one month, while the others remain unchanged.
“Leading a sustainable life does not necessarily mean sacrifice,” said Fong. Consuming ugly fruit and using degradable plastics are small changes that are good for the environment and easy to stick to. Only in this way can the 3R principle become part of our lives, he added.
After working there for six months, Ni, who wasn’t mindful of the 3R principle before arriving at the lab, now uses her cup every time she buys a coffee. “The job has reshaped my life,” Ni said.
8. What does the-underlined phrase “on a whim” in the second paragraph probably mean
A. In a rush. B. On a regular basis.
C. Without any reason. D. As a common practice.
9. What is the purpose of the ugly fruit market at 3R Lab
A. To reduce food waste. B. To promote healthy eating.
C. To sell new kinds of fruit. D. To provide more affordable fruit,
10. What can the water tank at 3R Lab show to its visitors
A. The water pollution caused by plastics. B. The degradation of PHA straws.
C. The interaction between two types of straws. D. The disappearance of normal plastic straws.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph about Ni
A. She avoids going to traditional markets. B. She has devoted less time to her hobbies.
C. She has got rid of a few bad habits. D. She is leading a low carbon life now.
【答案】8. A 9. A 10. B 11. D
故选A项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“They’re thrown away simply because of their appearance. Buying fruit regardless of how they look reduces food waste significantly in our daily life,(它们仅仅因为外表而被丢弃。购买水果,不管它们看起来如何,都能大大减少我们日常生活中的食物浪费,)”可知,3R实验室丑陋水果市场的目的是为了减少食物浪费。故选A项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Visitors can see how the PHA straws degrade (降解) into a thin layer in just one month, while the others remain unchanged.(参观者可以看到PHA吸管是如何在一个月内降解成薄薄的一层,而其他吸管则保持不变。)”可知,3R实验室的水箱能向参观者展示PHA吸管的降解。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“After working there for six months, Ni, who wasn’t mindful of the 3R principle before arriving at the lab, now uses her cup every time she buys a coffee.(在那里工作了六个月后,倪在来实验室之前并不知道3R原理,现在她每次买咖啡都要用自己的杯子。)”可推知,倪现在过着低碳生活。故选D项。

The year 2023 marked the 20th anniversary of China’s first manned space mission, with Yang Liwei becoming the first Chinese astronaut to go to space. Since then, another 17 astronauts have reached for the stars. The selection of the fourth generation of astronauts began in 2022 and is now in full swing. Experts revealed how difficult the training is before astronauts can explore the space.
The human body is not designed for space life. Astronauts are faced with multiple challenges on a space mission. The changes in gravity can have an impact on their bodies. The feeling of isolation and closed living in a small spacecraft for months can damage their mental health. Emergencies during missions challenge their knowledge and ability to solve problems under huge pressure. So it’s no wonder that astronauts have to meet extremely high standards and go through a tough training program.
To make sure that Chinese astronauts complete their missions and return to Earth safely, “Eight types, including over 200 subjects of training, were set,” Huang Weifen, chief designer of the astronaut system for China’s manned space project, told CCTV News. Apart from physical fitness training, it also includes basic scientific theories, psychological health, and mock (模拟的) missions.
Among the training subjects, the most tiring one is underwater training. This training is designed for astronauts to adapt to the microgravity environment in space. According to Huang, astronauts stay underwater in suits weighing over 100 kilograms for six hours at a time. Water resistance (阻力) and the heavy suit make every move exhausting. “Nie Haisheng once reported a two-kilogram loss in weight after one underwatei training exercise,” said Huang. Each astronaut receives training for at least three and a half years before having the chance to go to space.
Who can become astronauts The first and second generations of Chinese astronauts were selected only from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force. However, since 2018, when the third-generation selection process began, ordinary people have been invited to apply. They can fly with pilot astronauts to space.
12. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. High standards astronauts need to meet. B. Health problems caused by microgravity.
C. Requirements of the tough astronaut training. D. Different challenges astronauts face in space.
13. Which is the most physically demanding for its participants according to the article
A. Mock mission. B. Underwater training.
C. Physical fitness training. D. Scientific theory learning.
14. Why did Huang mention Nie Haishertg’s two-kilogram weight loss
A. To stress how challenging the training is. B. To describe Nie’s personal achievements.
C. To introduce the weight limit for astronauts. D. To explain the importance of proper training.
15. What is the most suitable title for the passage
A. The Qualities of Being an Astronaut B. Astronauts Faced with Multiple Challenges
C. Preparing the Mind and Body for Space D. The 20th Anniversary of China’s Space Mission
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C

根据第四段“Among the training subjects, the most tiring one is underwater training. (在训练科目中,最累人的是水下训练。)”可知,水下训练对参与者的体力要求最高。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“This training is designed for astronauts to adapt to the microgravity environment in space. (这项训练是为宇航员适应太空微重力环境而设计的。据黄说,宇航员穿着重达100多公斤的宇航服,一次在水下呆6个小时。水的阻力和沉重的衣服使每一个动作都筋疲力尽。“聂海胜曾经报告说,在一次水下训练后,他的体重减轻了两公斤。”黄说)”可知,黄提到聂海胜的两公斤体重损失是为了强调训练的挑战性有多大。故选A。
【15题详解】

On a sunny afternoon, the off-duty registered nurse, Samantha Baxer, at St. Mary’s Hospital was on her way to a store for mothers and babies with her best friend Kieran Horn, preparing to buy some necessities for her unborn baby — she was six months pregnant (怀孕的).
Samantha was in such a good mood at that moment, just like the white clouds in the blue sky, because as a nurse, she seldom had time to relax. “She was always on-duty and putting everybody first before herself.” Kieran said.
Suddenly, terrible things happened. A loud crash came into her ear, followed by people screaming. A car crashed at the comer of West Broad Street and West End Drive in Henrico. The damaged car rolled round and round, and finally stopped at the side of a telephone pole. “Jesus!” passers-by stood there stunned. Seeing this, two police officers and a citizen soon rushed towards the car, positioning their body weight against the vehicle to keep it from moving.
“Help! Help! The driver is bleeding heavily!” A man shouted anxiously. Samantha’s heart was in her mouth, and her professional ability sent her rushing to the scene of the accident, even if she didn’t know whether anyone was alive or not. Although she knew that pregnancy might cause trouble to her actions, she did not hesitate because she knew that every second could make a difference between life and death.

【答案】
She hurried to the driver. Seeing that he was unconscious, she quickly checked his breathing and pulse and found that his heartbeat was weak. Immediately she started CPR, in the meantime shouting to passers-by to call emergency service. Absorbed in the first aid, sweat ran down her forehead. Suddenly, Samantha felt a sharp pain coming from her belly. Her face gradually turned pale, but she still gritted her teeth and carried on because she knew this driver needed her. After the driver’s condition got better, she finally sighed with relief. Exhaustion and pain in her belly made her fall down in a faint.
The ambulance soon arrived and Samantha was rushed to hospital. Doctors quickly conducted a thorough examination and treatment to Samantha, after which both her and the baby were stabilized. A few days later, the driver’s family visited Samantha in her ward with a bunch of flowers, hugging her tightly to express their sincere gratitude. “It’s you that give him the chance to live.” Before leaving, They left a small gift—a handicraft with the inscription “To a nurse, a mother, and a brave woman.” At the sight of this, a mixture of warmth and relief flooded over Samantha. She knew that she had fulfilled her duty as a nurse with the right and worthwhile decision.

The rest of the time, I’m doing lots of planning with my customers and colleagues,” he said. This planning process includes working out the video’s theme with the client, creating a script, bringing together the visuals and text content, and also managing logistics like where to park the cars and how to bring electricity to the set.
Despite the pressure, Di gets great joy from making an impact through his works. In 2019, he made a film for Tsinghua, which tells the story of a group of first-generation college students. It was viewed more than 15 million times on social media and became a hot top 20 trending topic on Sina Weibo. Being a first-generation college student himself, Di felt very passionate about the videos goal of inspiring students to use their education to make a better life for their families. One month before the national college entrance exam in 2020, Di released a feature film encouraging high school students to keep working hard after the exam was pushed back by one month.
“I want to uncover and share China’s stories with the world, true stories of Chinese youth fighting for their dreams,” said Di.
4. What do we know about Di Di

8 What does the-underlined phrase “on a whim” in the second paragraph probably mean
A. In a rush.
D
