Doctor are known to be terrible pilots. They don't listen because they already know it all. I was lucky: I became a pilot in 1970, almost ten years before I graduated from medical school. I didn't realize then, but becoming a pilot makes me a better surgeon. I loved flying. As I flew bigger, faster planes, and in worse weather. I learned about crew resource management (机组资源管理), or CRM, a new idea to make flying safer. It means that crew members should listen and speak up for a good result, regardless of positions.
I first read about CRM in 1980. Not long after that, an attending doctor and I were flying in bad weather. The controller had us turn too late to get our landing ready. The attending doctor was flying; I was safety pilot He was so busy because of the bad turn, he had forgotten to put the landing gear (起落架) down. He was a better pilot - and my boss - so it felt unusual to speak up. But I had to: Our lives were in danger. I put aside my uneasiness and said, "We need to put the landing gear down now!" That was my first real lesson in the power of CRM, and I've used it in the operating room ever since.
CRM requires that the pilot/ surgeon encourage others to speak up. It further requires that when opinions are from the opposite, the doctor doesn't overreact, which might prevent fellow doctors from voicing opinions again. So when I'm in the operating room, I ask for ideas and help from others. Sometimes they're not willing to speak up. But I hope that if I continue to encourage them, someday someone will keep me from “landing gear up”.
5. What does the author say about doctors in general
A. They like flying by themselves.
B. They are unwilling to take advice.
C. They pretend to be good pilots.

6. The author deepened his understanding of the power of CRM when_______.
A. he saved the plane by speaking up
B. he was in charge of a flying task
C. his boss landed the plane too late
D. his boss operated on a patient
7. In the last paragraph“landing gear up” probably means ______.
A. following flying requirements.
B overreacting to different opinions.
C. listening to what fellow doctors say
D. making a mistake that may cost lives
8. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. CRM: A New Way to Make Flying Safe
B. Flying Makes Me a Better Doctor
C. The Making of a Good Pilot
D. A Pilot-Tumed Doctor
B 6. A 7. D 8. B

根据第一行的 “Doctor are known to be terrible pilots. They don't listen because they already know it all.(众所周知,医生是糟糕飞行员。他们不听,因为他们已经知道了一切。) ”可知,作者总体上认为doctors不喜欢倾听,他们认为他们什么都懂。B选项“他们不愿意采纳意见”符合文意,故选B。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段最后一句“But I had to: Our lives were in danger. I put aside my uneasiness and said, "We need to put the landing gear down now!" That was my first real lesson in the power of CRM, and I've used it in the operating room ever since.(我们的生命处于危险之中,危机时刻我大声地说:“我们必须按下起降架” 这是我运用CRM的第一堂课。)”

Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness(荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.
Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche(雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.
But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go — to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City — its present population is 762.
9. What attracted the early settlers to New York City
A. Its business culture.
B. Its small population.
C. Its geographical position.
D. Its favourable climate.
10. What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson
A. Two-thirds of them stayed there.
B. One out of five people got rich.
C. Almost everyone gave up.
D. Half of them died.
11. What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson
A. They found the city too crowded.
B. They wanted to try their luck elsewhere.
C. They were unable to stand the winter.
D. They were short of food.
12. What is the text mainly about
A. The rise and fall of a city.
B. The gold rush in Canada.
C. Journeys into the wilderness.
D. Tourism in Dawson.
C 10. B 11. B 12. A
Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River.
Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.
根据文章最后一段中and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come.
故A正确。
D
Before the 1830s, most newspapers were sold through annual subscriptions in America, usually $ 8 to $ 10 a year. Today $ 8 or $ 10 seems a small amount of money, but at that time these amounts were forbidding to most citizens. Accordingly, newspapers were read almost by rich people in politics or the trades. In addition, most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to a mass audience. They were dull and visually forbidding. But the revolution that was taking place in the 1830s would change all that.
The trend, then, was toward the “penny paper” —a term referring to papers made widely available to the public. It meant any inexpensive newspaper; perhaps more importantly it meant newspapers that could be bought in single copies on the street.
This development did not take place overnight. It had been possible( but not easy) to buy single copies of newspapers before 1830, but this usually meant the reader had to go down to the printer’s office to purchase a copy. Street sales were almost unknown. However, within a few years, street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in eastern cities. At first the price of single copies was seldom a penny-usually two or three cents was charged -and some of the older well-known papers charged five or six cents. But the phrase “penny paper” caught the public’s fancy, and soon there would be papers that did indeed sell for only a penny.
This new trend of newspapers for “the man on the street” did not begin well. Some of the early ventures (企业) were immediate failures. Publishers already in business, people who were owners of successful papers, had little desire to change the tradition. It took a few youthful and daring businessmen to get the ball rolling.
13. Which of the following best describes newspapers in America before the 1830s
A. Academic. B. Unattractive.
C. Professional. D. Popular.
14. What did street sales mean to newspapers
A. They would be priced higher. B. They would disappear from cities.
C. They could have more readers. D. They could regain public trust.
15. Who were the newspapers of the new trend targeted at
A. Local politicians. B. Common people.
C. Young publishers. D. Rich businessmen.
B 14. C 15. B

They were dull and visually forbidding.( 19世纪30年代之前,…… A.

Do you waste food
How much food do you buy each week Are you someone who fills your fridge and cupboards with treats so that you'11 always have something to eat and so that you'll never go hungry ____16____
Throwing away unwanted food has become a big issue in the developed world. While some of us throw away unwanted items, people in other parts of world face food shortages and are starving. ____17____ The actual figure is 1.3 billion tons of food, which is enough to feed a billion hungry people.
You may think supermarkets are mainly to blame for this mountain of food. After all, they do cast stuff that's past its sell — by — date. They've also been criticized for encouraging customers to buy more than they need. ____18____ In Europe an incredible 53% of food waste comes from households, which results in 88 million tons of food waste a year. So instead of filling our bellies, our food is filling up landfill sites. Unfortunately, this causes greenhouse gases which eventually leads to global warming and climate change.
In Denmark, a woman called Selina Juul has been working hard to tackle this problem. She convinced some supermarkets to stop selling their items in quantity so that people bought only what they needed. She's set up an education program in schools. ____19____
____20____ And when we're at home we should make the most of the food we have — using recipes that use up our leftovers or even sharing our extra food with our friends and neighbours.
A. People buy more than they need and throw too much away.
B. Or maybe, you're efficient with your shopping, only buying what you need.
C. But the biggest contributor to food waste is us.
D. Clearly, we need to think twice when shopping.
E. We simply need to stop throwing away food and enjoy it instead.
F. This has helped create a 25% reduction in food waste.
G. It's shocking that a third of the world's food is wasted each year.
B 17. G 18. C 19. F 20. D

To broaden your understanding, I suggest exploring online resources, watching documentaries, engaging with native Chinese speakers through language exchange platforms, and perhaps even considering joining cultural exchange programs or visiting Chinese communities nearby. I also genuinely hope you’ll have the opportunity to visit China in person someday soon. Experiencing the country firsthand will undoubtedly deepen your appreciation and understanding. Keep me posted on your discoveries!

Rain pattered outside, and the low rumble of thunder was felt more than heard. Inside the cozy living room, 10-year-old twins, Jake and Ben, huddled on the couch, browsing through their favorite songs on the tablet.
“Hey Jake, I think we should perform this one,” Ben said, pointing to a classic track they both loved.
Jake hesitated, “I love that song, Ben, but it has high notes. You know I struggle with those.”
Ben smirked, “That’s why we’re a team, right I’ve got the high notes, and you’ve got those amazing low tones. Together, we’re unbeatable.”
Jake sighed, feeling a pinch of anxiety. The school’s annual singing contest was only a weekaway, and they had decided to participate as a duo (搭档). Both brothers were talented, but while Ben was confident and had an impressive range, Jake often battled stage fright and doubted his abilities.
“Okay, let’s give it a shot,” Jake finally agreed, taking a deep breath.
The following days were filled with rehearsals. After school, they would lock themselves in their bedroom and practice. Their parents would occasionally hear their harmonies, smiles playing on their lips, proud of their determined sons.
However, not every rehearsal went smoothly. There were times Jake would miss a note, and Ben’s high notes would sometimes waver. There were disagreements over pacing, key changes, and even the kind of emotions they should evoke during specific parts of the song.
Yet, what made their bond unbreakable was their unwavering support for each other. When Jake felt nervous about the impending (逼近的) performance, Ben would reassure him. “You have a gift, Jake. Trust in it. And if you ever falter, remember I’m right there with you.”
On the other hand, when Ben struggled with his high notes, Jake was his pillar of strength. “Just relax, take a deep breath, and let it out. We’ve got this, bro.”
Days passed, and the day of the contest arrived. The school auditorium was buzzing with excitement. Families, teachers, and students filled every seat. As Jake and Ben waited backstage, Jake felt his heart racing. The murmur of the audience was deafening, and the weight of the stage lights made everything seem surreal.
“Hey,” Ben whispered, squeezing Jake’s hand, “remember the time we sang in front of our entire family during the reunion It’s the same, just a slightly larger family.”
Jake chuckled, feeling a bit better. “Yeah, a ‘slightly’ larger one.”
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为 150左右;

Before they knew it, their names were announced. The stage lights shone brightly as they stepped onto the stage, feeling nervous but excited. The familiar melody filled the auditorium, and Jake suddenly felt a surge of adrenaline mixed with fear racing through his veins. Jake’s heart pounded in his chest, his voice shaky at first. He turned to Ben and trying to avoid the eyes from the audience. Ben kept calm and didn’t respond, but he knew how his brother felt.
Sensing his brother’s unease, Ben subtly squeezed Jake’s hand and continued singing, letting Jake gather himself. Feeling Ben’s peace and strength, Jake turned back and started to focus on the performance with confidence. Together, they navigated through the song, their voices mixing in perfect harmony. As they reached the climax of the performance, Jake closed his eyes, letting the music lead him. When the final note echoed through the auditorium, the audience erupted into thunderous applause. Jake and Ben shared a triumphant smile, knowing that they had overcome their fears together.

D. his boss operated on a patient
7. In the last paragraph“landing gear up” probably means ______.
A. following flying requirements.
B. overreacting to different opinions.
C. listening to what fellow doctors say
D. making a mistake that may cost lives
8. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. CRM: A New Way to Make Flying Safe
B. Flying Makes Me a Better Doctor
C. The Making of a Good Pilot
D. A Pilot-Tumed Doctor
