Dragon or Loong
We will soon enter the Year of the Dragon. Or should that be the Year of the Loong That is a question that has been a subject for debate in China, as some say there is a difference between the two in Chinese and Western mythology.
为迎接新年，China Daily特别推出了一期关于龙年工艺美术展的报道。

早在清末期，在美华人就将“中国龙”译作loong，以和西方的dragon区别开来。新加坡总理李显龙的英文名也翻译成Lee Hsien Loong。
What’s the difference between the Chinese Dragon and the Western Dragon
The differences in perception of the mythical creatures in China and the West are rooted in their different cultural values.
而西方的dragon被描述为“a large aggressive animal with wings and a long tail, that can breathe out fire.
Thus the answer to the question at the beginning is clear: Whether or not to use loong instead of dragon is not important. What is important is that as we enter a new lunar year people globally appreciate the cultural values embodied in such Chinese symbols as loong.

Spring Festival Gala
The 2024 Spring Festival Gala official mascot吉祥物, “Loong Chenchen,” was unveiled 推出 by the China Media Group on December, 6.
The name “Loong Chenchen” incorporates吸收 the Chinese character “Loong,” 1 translates to “dragon” in English. The dragon has long held significant 2 (spirit) and cultural importance in China, 3 (feature) prominently in literature, art, folklore, architecture, clothing, 4 painting for thousands of years. In line with this rich heritage, the mascot embodies auspicious吉祥的 meanings of good fortune, peace and 5 (happy).
The mascot is intricately错综复杂的 designed, drawing inspiration from 6 (China) deep and enduring traditional culture. An example of this is 7 incorporation of the unique ancient dragon nose into its design. This element 8 (inspire) by a dragon-shaped artifact历史文物 dated back to the Xia Dynasty (around 2070 BC-1600 BC). The artifact is crafted from over 2,000 pieces of turquoise 绿松石 and was unearthed 9 the Erlitou archaeological site in Yanshi District, Luoyang, Henan Province.
10 (additional), the design of the dragon claw in “Loong Chenchen” draws inspiration from the pattern of the Nine-Dragon Wall of the Palace Museum in Beijing, exuding 流露,显露 a sense of solemnity 庄严；庄重.

6.As a mythical animal, Chinese Loongs are all masculine. There is no female Loong. When we talk about Yin and Yang, then the Loong is on the Yang side, while the Pheonix is on the Yin side;
7. Up to now, there are still some Dragon King Temple all over the country, which were always built by the rivers, lakes and seas in the hope of keeping away the floods or other disasters, and letting the locals stay safe.
5. The Loong ranks the fifth place in the animals of Chinese Zodiac.
