Travel is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you’re going to get, especially when using a mystery box plane ticket. Earlier this year, mystery box travel purchases increased and became trendy among China’s young people. In normal trips, people often plan their vacations well in advance. After buying a mystery box at a low price — usually 100 or 200 yuan — however, the travelers using this method will select their departure airport and receive several destination options to choose from. After the destination is decided, their trip begins.
Liao Liangyu, 16, has turned his eagerness to go on a mystery box trip into reality. He took a mystery box trip to Changsha with a couple of friends months ago. Right before their departure, a friend told Liao that Changsha was a super hyped-up (被炒作的) Internet sensation (网红). But he still decided to go and see it for himself.
“My biggest discovery is that Changsha is a city full of contrasts,” Liao explained to China Daily. “You can see skyscraper (摩天大楼) and old houses in the same view.”
Since the destination options include many less popular cities, travel mystery boxes also bring energy and economic benefits to these destinations. For example, Dehong city is a beautiful city in Yunnan province, yet has few visitors due to a lack of promotion. Following its inclusion as a mystery box travel destination, however, it has gained a lot of attention and is now thought of as a solid location for tourism.
But even so, a large number of people feel disappointed with travel mystery boxes because they can encounter many problems after purchasing one, such as inappropriate travel time, sudden flight cancellations, or even challenges with refunds. Su Weili from Ctrip suggested in an interview with Haibao News that visitors should choose reliable platforms and sign contracts to guarantee their interests.
4. What is the appeal of mystery box travel
A. Traveling with like-minded strangers.
B. Unplanned traveling at a low cost.
C. Fixed routes to choose from.
D. Popular destinations to visit.
5. How did Liao Liangyu feel about his mystery box trip
A. He regretted traveling with his friends.
B. He felt Changsha didn’t deserve its fame.
C. He disliked the unpredictability.
D. He discovered something unexpected.
6. How do travel mystery boxes affect places like Dehong city
A. They help these places better known.
B. They often cause overcrowding.
C. They lead to environmental problems.
D. They enrich local people’s lives.
7. What is the main topic of the last paragraph
A. Reliable platforms to buy travel mystery boxes.
B. Various mystery box travel options available.
C. Potential issues related to travel mystery boxes.
D. Mystery box travel regulations and policies.

China’s leading liquor (烈性酒) producer, Kweichou Moutai (贵州茅台), and domestic coffee chain, Luckin Coffee, have launched a sauce-flavored latte (酱香拿铁) recently, as the Chinese luxury liquor maker aims to pull in more younger consumers. The 38-yuan sauce-flavored latte, which Luckin discounted to 19 yuan on the first day of sales, was one of the most popular topics on Chinese social media platform Weibo.
Moutai is a colorless spirit that is usually served at banquets (宴会) in China, and drinkers say that the flavor of Moutai latte is similar to soy sauce. The companies said the latte alcohol content was lower than 0.5 percent of its volume.
Kweichow Moutai has been looking for ways to be more accessible and appeal to a new generation of users. The company, based in China’s southwestern Guizhou province, also launched a baijiu-infused ice cream last year. With baijiu in it, the new ice cream became a hit.
Chinese social media users posted videos of themselves picking up cups of the drink and being told by sales staff that they should not drive after drinking it. By Monday afternoon in Beijing, the app showed buyers would need to wait for more than an hour to pick up their drinks.
Independent food industry analyst Zhu Danpeng said the cooperation would most likely benefit both brands. “Moutai and Luckin are the leading firms in the domestic liquor and coffee sectors, respectively,” Zhu said, “On the one hand, Moutai accelerates its brand rejuvenation (复兴) through cooperation with Luckin. On the other hand, for Luckin, its cooperation with Moutai also helps to improve its comprehensive strength and brand tone in the coffee industry.”

How has global warming changed your life Perhaps you experience hotter summers. But for reindeer herders (驯鹿游牧民), the influence goes far beyond that.
Living in the Arctic region spreading from Russia to Sweden local reindeer herders make a living by herding. For generations, they have been living in harmony with the cold winters with their deep understanding of snow and ice types, weather patterns and animal behaviors. This allows them to predict and prepare for winters.
However, the warming Arctic is messing up these traditional signals, making herders’ traditional ways of predicting weather less useful. In 2014, during the winter migration (迁徙) southward with their reindeer in North Russia, something unexpected happened. Heavy rainfall formed an ice shield above the lichen (地衣), normally covered by soft snow. Unable to access the lichen beneath the ice, the reindeer suffered from hunger, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of them.
The warming climate goes beyond threatening reindeer herders’ livelihood; it also threatens their culture. “We are an Arctic people, and our culture is written in snow. But climate change means the snow will get less and less,” Henrik Blind, a member of Sami herding family in Sweden, told The Guardian. In his language, there are over 300 words to describe snow. But with less snow, the Sami culture faces the risk of losing elements of its cultural identity.
Despite these challenges, herders have been cooperating with scientists to better deal with climate change. For example, for scientists, the difference between various types of snow is hard to tell. But local people who live with snow every day can see what scientists fail to see. At the same time, satellite data from modern scientists could help predict disasters for the local people. To combine these two different knowledge systems together, the US National Science Foundation set up the Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledge and Science this September. The goal is to recognize the value of indigenous (土著) knowledge alongside modern research methods.
“We must realize we can’t over-consume our planet. This is urgent. We need to listen to all the indigenous people who know how to live in harmony with the planet,” Blind told The Guardian.
12. What led to the deaths of many reindeer during their winter migration southward in 2014
A. A disease outbreak after heavy rainfall.
B. Food shortage due to ice-covered lichen.
C. Attacks by other wildlife.
D. Unexpectedly strong snowstorms.
13. How is global warming posing a risk to Arctic culture
A. By reducing language diversity B. By threatening their cultural elements.
C. By changing traditional eating habits. D. By challenging ice type descriptions.
14. Why are scientists and herders cooperating
A. To spread indigenous customs. B. To test modern research methods.
C. To predict global natural disasters. D. To bridge their knowledge gap.
15. What might be Blind’s attitude toward the establishment of the Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledge and Science
A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Worried. D. Uninterested.
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. D 15. A

Out in the fields of rural Kentucky lived a young teenage girl named Amanda. She stayed with her parents in a one-story house on a large plot of land. Her closest friends were far from her, but she didn’t have her driver’s license yet. Amanda could still keep herself busy for hours by exploring the grassy fields, enjoying the natural beauty that surrounded them. On the weekends, Amanda would even volunteer on neighbouring farms to help take care of sheep, goats, and horses.
Still, it was easy for Amanda to feel lonely in her big house without any brothers, sisters, or even a pet she could relate to. That was until one day, just as Amanda was about to leave for another morning spent exploring the fields and rivers nearby, she saw a stray (流浪的) cat jump onto the porch (门廊) with a long, drawn-out meow (喵喵叫) toward her. The cat had long whiskers (须) and a black-and-white fur pattern, which seemed to start from the animal’s chest and move outward, and tiny white paws like little boots. Even though the cat looked dirty, the cat was beautiful, with bright blue eyes.
Amanda’s feeling of surprise quickly gave way to a feeling of pity. Thinking of what she could offer the cat, Amanda hurried to the kitchen and prepared two bowls: one filled with fish and the other with water. After sniffing (嗅) them carefully, the cat then began to hungrily eat the bowls’ contents. Once it finished its meal, the cat ran away into the thick grass and disappeared.
From that point onward, at the same time each day, the cat would appear on the porch in the morning and beg for food and water, and Amanda would always be there ready. Their relationship started to deepen as Amanda enjoyed regularly seeing her new “furry neighbour”. The cat was too nervous to be taken indoors, but Amanda enjoyed its company.

【答案】However, one day, everything took a different turn. In the morning, Amanda brought the two bowls near the porch and waited for the cat as usual, but the cat didn’t appear. Amanda waited for some time and went back home alone. The next day, the day after that, the cat didn’t show up either. On the fourth day, the cat was still nowhere to be seen. Amanda’s feeling of disappointment gave way to a feeling of fright. “What happened to the little poor cat ” Without the least hesitation, Amanda stepped into the thick grass where the cat usually went and searched carefully. Suddenly, she noticed a pile of grass shaking. She walked towards it.
As Amanda approached, she could hear some soft sounds of kittens meowing. She slowed her breathing, followed the sounds, and was surprised to find her “furry neighbor” lying in the grass with four kittens beside her. The cat had become a mother! So excited was Amanda that she covered her mouth with her hands, worrying that her sudden presence would scare the cute little creatures. Amanda quickly rushed back home to prepare some food and water for them. Amanda felt happy and satisfied. She knew her five “neighbors” would totally change her lonely life.

D Popular destinations to visit.

Moutai is a colorless spirit that is usually served at banquets (宴会) in China and drinkers say that the flavor of Moutai latte is similar to soy sauce. The companies said the latte alcohol content was lower than 0.5 percent of its volume.

How has global warming changed your life Perhaps you experience hotter summers. But for reindeer herders (驯鹿游牧民), the influence goes far beyond that.
Living in the Arctic region spreading from Russia to Sweden, local reindeer herders make a living by herding.
“We are an Arctic people and our culture is written in snow.
