We had just finished thirteen miles of hiking in the Smokey Mountains. We were tired and our muscles ached as we made our way back to New England. The car ride to the airport followed by a two-hour flight left our legs in worse condition. When I heard that two seats in first class on our next flight were available for a small upgrade (升级) fee,I jumped at the chance. We agreed to blow our budgets and paid the fee to upgrade our tickets.
As we boarded the plane,we felt as if we were part of an elite group. We took our seats and were happy to join the other few passengers who could fly in such luxury. As we chatted away about hiking, waterfalls and bears,I could hear people around us talking about busy schedules and business meetings.
We noticed that the stewardess (空姐) was working nonstop to ensure the comfort of the first class passengers. As the stewardess walked by our seats near the end of the flight,I looked at her and said,“Thank you and I hope you have a great night.” She stopped at our seats with a look of disbelief on her face.
After a few moments the stewardess walked back to our seats. She asked us what company we were traveling for.“I can tell you work with the public,” she said.“Why do you think so?”I asked. She answered very quietly,“Because you are the only passenger here to say thank you or stop to say something nice to me tonight.”
The sense of belonging to the elite group of people in first class disappeared as we heard her words. Our seats in luxury offered us more than a comfortable ride.

This Mother’s Day will be the 10th year I have spent without my own mother. She passed away less than a month before Mother’s Day in the year 2000.She had been ill for almost two years, and I didn’t cry when she died,or at her funeral, but on that first Mother’s Day without her.On that day,it had sunk in that this person I loved and depended on was gone forever.
Or was she?She still lives in the family’s memories,in the thoughts of her friends and co-workers,in the values she had instilled in her children, and in the lovely flower gardens that she had so carefully tended.
She loved her gladioli and irises. Each fall she would dig the bulbs out of the soil and carefully wrap them in paper. The bulbs would be stored until the following spring when they would be replanted. It seemed like a lot of effort to me,but each year her flower garden was more glorious than the year before. She put the same hard work into caring for her family, instilling in her children a sense of justice and fair play, compassion, and strong moral values so that we blossomed.
Share anecdotes about your mother’s life at your Mother’s Day party.Too often,we avoid speaking of those loved ones who have passed away, fearing that we will unearth sad feelings. It doesn’t have to be that way.Sharing fond memories and stories of the life we shared with her can be a healing process that binds the family together.
My mother passed away when her oldest grandchild was only eight years old.Children will enjoy sharing pictures and stories of the grandmother they may have never known or have little memory of.Sharing anecdotes to pass on to the next generation will give children a feeling of family history and continuity, and it may be one of the best ways to honor our mothers and grandmothers who have gone before us.

My dream ended when I was born.Although I never knew it then,I just held on to something that would never come to pass.__1__But in the morning when you wake up,they are remembered just as a dream. That is what happened to me.
I always had the dream to dance like a beautiful ballerina twirling around and around and hearing people applaud for me.When I was young,I would twirl around and around in the fields of wildflowers that grew in my backyard.__2__I would dance so fast that I would forget where I was, until I would hear sounds that reminded me of where I really was.I thought that if I twirled faster everything would disappear and I would wake up in a new place.Reality woke me up when I heard a voice saying,“I don’t know why you bother trying to dance.__3__Besides,you don’t have the talent to even be a dancer.” I remember how those words paralyzed every feeling in my body. __4__
As I grew older,I began to realize that the reason why my dream was even born in the first place, was that it was something that was inside of me.__5__It’s not that I wanted it to die,but I allowed it to die the day I started listening to the words,“You can’t do it.”

People in the United States honour their parents with two special days:Mother’s Day,on the second Sunday in May,and Father’s Day,on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care. These two days offer an opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers.More mothers now work outside the home.More fathers must help with child-care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways.On Mother’s Day people wear carnations.A red one symbolizes a living mother.A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honour parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery (公墓).On these days, families get together at home,as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father’s Day.These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts.Children make them at school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”.Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies and other stores do lots of business during these holidays.

Recently, our class have had a heated discussion about whether web slang should be used in textbooks.Opinions are divided on the topic.
70% of the students hold the view that new words should be added in textbooks with the development of society, for web slang is a reflection of young people’s real life and it can help them to keep up with the times. However, the others hold the opposite views. They worry that web slang’s common use in textbooks would make it more difficult for people of different ages to communicate with each other. They also believe that web slang in textbooks would put students at a disadvantage in using standard Chinese.
As the saying goes, different people usually see the same subject in a different light.

A
Sitting across from a German couple and a Chinese mother and her child,we were waiting at the Guilin airport for our delayed flight to Shanghai. In this last week of our travel-study tour,my husband and I were savoring this short break by reading.
I tuned out the languages I couldn’t understand. But it was an American accent that pulled my attention from my book.It also pulled the attention of three rows of people seated around us as the American barked,“Coming through!Coming through!”
At the same time,an oversized man pulling an oversized carry-on passed our row.His wheeled bag caught the German man’s feet.Turning to see what snagged his luggage, the American bellower yanked his bag so hard that it crossed over the man’s feet.It was then that my horror struck. There was no “I’m sorry”,no “Excuse me” and no “Pardon me” coming from this countryman of mine.
While this wasn’t the first or last incident where I sighted discourteous,ill-mannered,rude Americans in China, each produced similar feelings.First,I was embarrassed that someone from my country was creating a negative impression of Americans. My second reaction was a desire to apologize.I wanted to explain to the Chinese woman and her child, the German couple next to them, and everyone nearby that this was not typical American behavior.I wanted them to know “we” were all not like that.
I never got to explain,or to apologize.Language differences made that option impossible, and rational thinking made it inappropriate. But it turned out not to be a need. The German man caught my eyes with a bit of head-shaking,smiling and eye rolling, which I returned, and it was clear that he knew we were Americans and was expressing that there was “no need” to apologize for “universal idiot behavior”.

B.were having a good time
C.were enjoying reading together

59.Every time the author saw Americans’bad behavior in China she always felt ________.
A.uneasy and apologetic
B.scared and disappointed

●It took me a long time to go through all your responses to our last video game story (“The Violent Side of Video Games”),and I learned a lot. Many of you,for example, pointed out correctly that I should have played the games I wrote about first,or at least researched the details.I apologize for making mistakes in the way I described certain games. In retrospect,I wish I had been able to give them a try.
●What interested us most about your comments was how long, thoughtful, and even emotional they were. The subject obviously struck a nerve.Lots of you pointed out that video games should come with ratings, like movies do.You said that parents should take responsibility for keeping their young children away from M-rated games. Many of you argued that kids can and should be able to tell the difference between real life and make-believe.An overwhelming number of respondents found it hard to believe that there is a link between video games and violent behavior because they themselves are not violent people.
●Carefully designed research studies are the best way to distinguish between personal opinions and scientifically solid facts.I tried to address both in the next story, and I’m sure you’ll let me know how well I do.In the meantime, here are some of your thoughts about the topic we covered last time.(I touched up spelling and grammar errors, but left your thoughts intact.)
◆I’m eager to hear what you have to say next.—Emily
◆Yes,video games desensitize people, but so do movies and television shows.Blaming children being violent on games and such isn’t right.Parents who are too busy living their own lives to pay attention to their kids are to blame more than games.Soon, someone will say that playing with cowboys and Indians,or playing with toy soldiers,is bad for young children.—Akemi,22
◆I have been playing video games for a large majority of my life.I (as many of my friends) do not like these violent video games because they are violent, but they create a great form of competition between my friends and me.—Curtis,17
◆I think that while, yes, video games may contribute_to violence, there are many other factors for the kids to allow the violence to affect them.—Heather,16
◆www.pbs.org/kcts/videogamer/evolution/impact/myths.html:go there and read it.Video games don’t cause violence,society does.—Bob,16
60.What is the article mainly telling us?
A.Different descriptions of video games.
B.Various comments of video games.
C.Different functions of video games.
D.Various experiences about video games.
61.From the 1st paragraph we can infer that people’s attitudes to the last video game story were ________.
A.neutral B.positive
C.not clear D.not quite content
62.By reading the second paragraph we can see that ________.
A.people have similar opinions of video games
B.people have different opinions about video games
C.people are always arguing with each other for no reason
D.people are confused by the video games
63.In the last but one paragraph, the underlined phrase “contribute to” means “________”.
A.help to decrease B.cause damage to
C.help to increase D.help to fight with
C
Everybody is happy as his pay rises.Yet pleasure at your own can disappear if you learn that a fellow worker has been given a bigger one.Indeed,if he is known as being lazy, you might even be quite cross.Such behavior is regarded as “all too human”,with the underlying belief that other animals would not be able to have this finely developed sense of sadness. But a study by Sarah Brosnan of Emory University in Atlanta,Georgia, which has just been published in Nature, suggests that it_is_all_too_monkey,as well.
The researchers studied the behaviors of some kind of female brown monkeys. They look smart. They are good-natured,co-operative creatures, and they share their food happily.Above all, like female human beings, they tend to pay much closer attention to the value of “goods and services” than males.
Such characteristics make them perfect subjects for Doctor Brosnan’s study. The researchers spent two years teaching their monkeys to exchange tokens(奖券)—some rocks, for food.Normally, the monkeys were happy enough to exchange pieces of rock for pieces of cucumber. However, when two monkeys were placed in separate and connected rooms,so that each other could observe what the other is getting in return for its rock, they became quite different.
In the world of monkeys, grapes are excellent goods(and much preferable to cucumbers). So when one monkey was handed a grape in exchange for her token, the second was not willing to hand hers over for a mere piece of cucumber. And if one received a grape without having to provide her token in exchange at all,the other either shook her own token at the researcher,or refused to accept the cucumber.Indeed, the mere presence of a grape in the other room(without an actual monkey to eat it) was enough to bring about dissatisfaction in a female monkey.
The researches suggest that these monkeys, like humans, are guided by social senses. In the wild, they are co-operative and group-living.Such co-operation is likely to be firm only when each animal feels it is not being cheated.Feelings of anger when unfairly treated,it seems, are not the nature of human beings alone.Refusing a smaller reward completely makes these feelings clear to other animals of the group. However, whether such a sense of fairness developed independently in monkeys and humans,or whether it comes from the common roots that they had 35 million years ago,is,as yet,an unanswered question.
64.Female monkeys of this kind are chosen for the research most probably because they are ________.
A.more serious about what they get
B.attentive to researchers’ instructions
C.nice in both appearance and behaviors
D.more ready to help others than their male companions
65.The underlined statement “it is all too monkey” means that ________.
A.monkeys are also angry with lazy fellows
B.feeling bitter at unfairness is also monkey’s nature
C.monkeys, like humans, tend to be envious of each other
D.no animals other than monkeys can develop such feelings
66.When one monkey received a grape for free, the other would ________.
A.not be willing to hand over her token
B.shake her hands and get angry
C.have to exchange her token for the cucumber
D.refuse to accept the cucumber
67.Which of the following conclusions is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Human beings’ feelings of anger are developed from monkeys.
B.In the research, male monkeys are less likely to exchange food with others.
C.Co-operation between monkeys stays firm before the realization of being cheated.
D.Only monkeys and humans have the sense of fairness dating from 35 million years ago.
D
Your friend might be in Australia or maybe just down the road, but they are all just a few clicks away. Life has changed for millions of children across the world who now make friends online. Whether you use chat-rooms(聊天室), QQ, MSN or ICQ, you are part of virtual community(虚拟社会).
“I seldom talk with my parents or grandparents, but I talk a lot with my old friends on QQ,” said Fox’s Shadow, the online nickname used by a Senior 2 girl in China. “Eighty percent of my classmates use QQ after school.”
QQ is the biggest messaging service in China. Four million people used it one Saturday night in October, according to Tencent, the company which developed QQ.
And Fox’s Shadow might well have been one of them. “I log in on Friday nights, and Saturdays or Sundays when I feel bored. I usually spend about 10 hours chatting online every week,” she said,“ But I hardly talk with strangers, especially boys or men.”
Even though she likes chatting, she is careful about making friends with strangers online. “You don’t know who you are talking to. You should always be careful about who you trust online.”
Many people would like to meet offline when they feel they have got to know someone very well. Fox’s Shadow once met one of her online friends face to face. It was a girl who was a comic (喜剧) fan like herself and they went to a comic show together.
A 16-year-old Beijing boy, known online as Bart Simon, dislikes QQ users. “I used to chat on QQ, but I found that most people were talking about useless things, ”he said. Now he chats online in English, using MSN. “I only chat online because I’ve got friends in Japan, the USA and Singapore,” he said, “I want to learn more about foreign cultures. ”But he spends little time chatting as he sees it as a waste of time and money.
“If you are really addicted (沉迷) to it, sometimes you can’t listen carefully in class,” he said, “And the friends in your real life are always more important than those so-called friends you meet online.”
68.How many messaging services have been mentioned in the passage?
A.2. B.3. C.4. D.5.
69.What’s the meaning of the phrase “log in” in the fourth paragraph?
A.Take off. B.Get online.
C.Set out. D.Set up.
70.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Chat Online
B.Caught in the Web
C.Do You Know Messaging Service
D.QQ, MSN and ICQ

M:She doesn’t look any thinner. My sister eats eggs to lose weight.Only eggs for breakfast, for lunch, and for dinner.
W:That’s bad for the heart!Something in eggs is good for losing weight, but too many eggs are bad for the heart.
M:I’ve read that, too. Then what about a steak diet? One of my cousins doesn’t eat anything but steak, even for breakfast.

Text 10
We settled back in deep armchairs and enjoyed an unusual and breathtaking view of the world. We went there because the cost was lower out of season. We stayed at a hotel on the beach. We slept late every morning and then had breakfast outdoors near the pool. When the weather was not too hot,we used to go sightseeing in the morning. We visited the campus of the University of Miami and the Everglades. In the afternoon,we used to go swimming in the ocean or the pool, lie in the sun,or go water-skiing.After dinner in the evening,we used to go dancing in a discotheque to enjoy ourselves in the nightclubs. The weather was very good every day,and the two weeks passed by too quickly. We were both very sorry when we had to leave.
the number of……
get to know慢慢地了解,逐渐地熟悉;regret doing sth.
24.A [can’t help doing sth.禁不住做某事;burst into后接名词;burst out后接v.-ing形式。]
25.C [at a time每次,逐一;in time及时;迟早,终于;on time按时;at one time一度,曾经。]
turn up出现,来到;turn down拒绝;turn off关掉;turn out证明是。]
29.C [make up for弥补;take up拿起;从事;占据;put up提高,增加;turn up开大;出现;露面。]
be to blame应受责备,为固定表达。
32.B [tear up撕碎;tear down拆除。]
get over克服,战胜,掌握;get in获得,收获;get along进展(相当于get on);get through通过。]
mean to do sth. I meant to是I meant to do的省略说法。]
此外,本段中间部分的“I couldn’t shake the thought”也是提示。
根据上文“a single,middle-aged woman”及“she doesn’t have a family in town”可知lonely“孤独的”最符合题意。所以选A。]
make one’s day表示“使某人一天都很愉快”。
由本句前面的“the way it is”可知,此处不再需要表方式的how。]
此外,第四段后半部分中的“the little effort it had taken”也是提示。
根据第一段中的“...my husband and I were savoring this short break by reading.”
联系第二段和第三段中的描写,特别是结合文中的“There was no ‘I’m sorry’,no ‘Excuse me’ and no ‘Pardon me’ coming from this countryman of mine.”
根据第四段中的“While this wasn’t the first or last incident where I sighted discourteous,ill-mannered,rude Americans in China, each produced similar feelings.”
从第一段中“I should have played the games I wrote about first... I apologize for making mistakes...”
根据文章第二段中“... like female human beings, they tend to pay much closer attention to the value of ‘goods and services’ than males”以及第三段第一句“Such characteristics make them perfect subjects for Doctor Brosnan’s study”可知答案为A项。]
根据文章第四段中“And if one received a grape without having to provide her token in exchange at all,the other either shook her own token at the researcher,or refused to accept the cucumber”可知答案为D项。]
Such co-operation is likely to be firm only when each animal feels it is not being cheated”可知C项正确;A、B两项无信息依据;根据文章最后一段中“whether such a sense of fairness developed independently in monkeys and humans... an unanswered question”判断D项错误。]
71.D 72.A 73.E 74.C 75.B
