One Day University
One Day University was founded by Steven Schragis in 2006. He came up with the idea after he dropped his daughter off at college in upstate New York. The school had about a dozen professors giving short talks about a variety of subjects. All the parents had the same reaction: “I wish I were the one going to college!”
One Day University creates fascinating days of learning designed to inspire your mind. We work with over two hundred professors from the country’s top colleges to create events. No matter what you love, you’ll find that every One Day U event is filled with exploratory talks that will challenge you as if you were a student in college once again! And just like your college days, you’re sure to meet new friends who share the belief that learning is a rewarding lifelong process. At One Day U, there’s no homework and no grades. Just learning for the sake of learning!

根据第二段的“We work with over two hundred professors from the country’s top colleges to create events.(我们与来自全国顶尖大学的200多名教授合作举办活动。)”
通读全文,尤其是第二段的“At One Day U, there’s no homework and no grades. Just learning for the sake of learning!(在One Day U,没有作业,也没有分数。为学习而学习!)”可知,本文介绍的是One Day University这个活动,目的是为这个活动打广告,故选C。

After lab-grown meat, are you getting ready for animal-free cow’s milk A San Francisco startup believes it has found a solution.
Through a combination of yeast(酵母), cow DNA and plant nutrients, Perfect Day claims to have created a product identical in taste and nutritional value to cow’s milk, but without any cows involved. It will satisfy consumers who love eating dairy(乳制品的)ice-cream, cheese and yoghurt, but loathe factory-style farming and its environmental footprint.
Sales of milk alternatives such as soy, coconut and more recently pea milk are expected to be on the rise. But until now they have not cut traditional milk and dairy production. “The alternatives for yoghurt, cheese and ice-cream are so bad that people don’t even want to try them,” says Perfect Day co-founder Ryan Pandya.
The missing ingredient (成分)in plant-based alternatives is cow’s milk proteins. To make the animal-free cow’s milk, Perfect Day puts cow DNA—which is readily available thanks to decades of research by the dairy industry—into yeast and adds sugar to create cow’s milk proteins through fermentation (发酵). These milk proteins are then combined with sugar, fats and nutrients to create the final product.
“We’re taking plant nutrients and transforming them into animal proteins the same way that cows do, using the same milk proteins as found in cow’s milk, but much more efficiently, because we’re using a yeast cell not an animal,” said Pandya.
Although comparisons have been made with lab-grown meat, Pandya said they are not using novel technology. Many people initially go ‘oh is this like lab or test-tube milk’, but that’s wrong. There are no test tubes in our fermentation process. The meat folks are trying to invent technology that doesn’t exist today, but our milk is made through techniques that have been in use for more than three decades.
4. What does the underlined word “loathe” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Ignore. B. Hate. C. Doubt. D. Tolerate.
5. Which of the following is a part of Perfect Day’s milk-making process
A. Mixing cow DNA with yeast and sugar.
B. Adding sugar and fats to plant milk.
C. Mixing plant milk with cow milk.
D. Adding cow DNA to plant milk.
6. How is Perfect Day’s milk different from pea milk
A. It costs less energy.
B. It is cheaper in price.
C. It has cow’s milk proteins.
D. It contains less sugar and fats.
7. What does Pandya think of their product
A. It tastes like test-tube milk.
B. It needs to be tested further.
C. It is well-received by green food lovers.
D. It is produced with existing technology.
B 5. A 6. C 7. D
根据第二段的“It will satisfy consumers who love eating dairy(乳制品的)ice-cream, cheese and yoghurt, but loathe factory-style farming and its environmental footprint.(它将满足那些喜欢吃乳制品冰淇淋、奶酪和酸奶,但loathe工厂化农业及其环境足迹的消费者。)”
根据第四段的“To make the animal-free cow’s milk, Perfect Day puts cow DNA—which is readily available thanks to decades of research by the dairy industry—into yeast and adds sugar to create cow’s milk proteins through fermentation(发酵). These milk proteins are then combined with sugar, fats and nutrients to create the final product.(为了制造无动物牛奶,Perfect Day将奶牛DNA——得益于乳制品行业数十年的研究这种DNA很容易获得——放入酵母中,并添加糖,通过发酵产生牛奶蛋白质。这些牛奶蛋白然后与糖、脂肪和营养物质结合,形成最终产品。)”可知,要制成这种无动物的牛奶,需要将奶牛的DNA放入酵母中,再添加糖,使它们之间发生反应,最终才能制成产品。故选A项。
根据第四段的“The missing ingredient in plant-based alternatives is cow’s milk proteins. To make the animal-free cow’s milk, Perfect Day puts cow DNA—which is readily available thanks to decades of research by the dairy industry—into yeast and adds sugar to create cow’s milk proteins through fermentation.
根据最后一段“Although comparisons have been made with lab-grown meat, Pandya said they are not using novel technology. Many people initially go ‘oh is this like lab or test-tube milk’, but that’s wrong. There are no test tubes in our fermentation process. The meat folks are trying to invent technology that doesn’t exist today, but our milk is made through techniques that have been in use for more than three decades.(尽管已经与实验室培育的肉进行了比较,潘迪亚说他们没有使用新技术。许多人最初会问‘哦,这是实验室还是试管牛奶’,但这是错误的。我们的发酵过程中没有试管。肉类行业的人们正试图发明今天并不存在的技术,但我们的牛奶是通过已经使用了三十多年的技术制成的。)”可知,这种无动物牛奶是使用三十多年的技术制成的,也就是说使用的是现有的技术,而不是通过新技术制成的。故选D项。

A dog’s devotion to his home is making national headlines after his owner found him gardening the property weeks after the residence and the surrounding area was burned to the ground by Northern California’s Camp Fire.
Madison, an Anatolian shepherd dog, reunited with 75-year-old Andrea Gaylord on Wednesday — the first day she was permitted to return to her land in the town of Paradise. After the fire, animal rescuer Shayla Sullivan received a request to search for Gaylord’s two dogs, Madison and Miguel. When the fast-moving Camp Fire broke out, Gaylord had just minutes to escape and wasn’t able to find Madison and Miguel. Other rescuers managed to capture Miguel not long afterward, while Madison’s whereabouts remained a mystery. Sullivan had a feeling that he wasn’t too far away. After all, some type of animal was eating the food and water she was regularly leaving out.
“The third day I went there, I felt like I saw a flash of white movement nearby,” Sullivan said. As it turned out, she was right — but it took a familiar person coming home to convince Madison it was safe to show his face. When Gaylord drove up to the property the first day, it took about five or ten minutes for Madison to come running to greet her. Even more amazing was seeing Miguel and Madison reunite with each other. Miguel had been “so upset and so depressed” being without his brother and away from his home.
Anatolian shepherd dogs are from Turkey and have been bred for thousands of years to protect and guard livestock, their property and their owners. They are appreciated for their loyalty, intelligence and independence and Madison is perfect example of a livestock guardian dog. He dealt with a natural disaster bravely and went right back to where he belonged and stayed there until his owners and close friend returned.
8. What made Madison well-known to the public
A. Escaping from the fire quickly and skillfully.
B. Guarding the property for weeks after the fire.
C. Managing to survive weeks without any food.
D. Saving residents in the community from the fire.
9. What does the underlined word “capture” probably mean in Paragraph 2
A. Frighten. B. Encourage. C. Catch. D. Reward.
10. What can be inferred about Miguel
A. Miguel failed to recognize Gaylord after the fire.
B. Miguel had a deep emotional bond with Madison.
C. Miguel hid himself until Shayla Sullivan appeared.
D. Miguel suffered psychological damage from the fire.
11. According to the text, Anatolian shepherd dogs ________.
A. have been used as livestock guardians
B. are expert at dealing with natural disasters
C. became family pets one thousand years ago
D. behave differently in face of different persons
B 9. C 10. B 11. A

根据第一段“A dog’s devotion to his home is making national headlines after his owner found him gardening the property weeks after the residence and the surrounding area was burned to the ground by Northern California’s Camp Fire.(一只狗狗对自己家的忠诚成为了全国的头条新闻,因为它的主人发现它在住宅和周围地区被北加州的营火烧毁几周后还在守卫自己的财产)”可知,Madison之所以出名是因为在火灾后还在守卫主人的财产。
根据第二段“After the fire, animal rescuer Shayla Sullivan received a request to search for Gaylord’s two dogs, Madison and Miguel.(火灾发生后,动物救援人员Shayla Sullivan接到一个请求,要求寻找盖洛德的两只狗,Madison和Miguel)”可知,动物救援人员是在寻找Madison和Miguel。
根据第三段“Miguel had been “so upset and so depressed” being without his brother and away from his home. (失去了Madison,Miguel“很难过,很沮丧”,离开了家)”可推断,它们之间有着很深的情感纽带。故选B。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Anatolian shepherd dogs are from Turkey and have been bred for thousands of years to protect and guard livestock, their property and their owners.(安纳托利亚牧羊犬来自土耳其,已经被培育了数千年,用来保护和看守家畜、它们的财产和它们的主人)”可知,安纳托利亚牧羊犬被用来看守家畜。故选A。
D
Cosplayers can invest considerable time, money and effort into making best head-to-toe presentations that are one-of-a-kind. But what inspires cosplayers to present themselves with so many detailed artistic designs Psychologists try to reveal the facts through research.
When a cosplayer selects a particular costume, he/she is often getting inside a specific character—or combination of characters—because something about that role speaks to them personally, according to Robin S. Rosenberg, a clinical psychologist at the University of California, San Francisco.
Batman, for example, can be an especially meaningful cosplay choice for someone coping with trauma. The dark superhero faced destructive trauma when he was a child—witnessing the cruel and violent murder of his parents—which he overcame to become a hero. “When people are dressed as Batman, many talk about having experienced their own traumatic experiences,” Rosenberg said. “He survived and found meaning and purpose from his experience, and that is inspiring to them.”
Rosenberg noted that Wonder Woman is another popular choice which calls up many women’s feelings, partly because she holds her own in the male-dominated world of costumed comics superheroes. “For those cosplayers, dressing as Wonder Woman is a way of celebrating and embracing her power,” Rosenberg said.
Cosplay is a type of performance, which frequently moves strangers to approach the character for conversation and photos. So it surprised Rosenberg to discover that many cosplayers were identified as introverts. “When they wore a costume, they became much more socially outgoing,” Rosenberg said. She explained that, sometimes, wearing a costume allows a person to obtain confidence they didn't know they had, and helps them overcome shyness in real life.
“When you do any kind of costuming—but particularly cosplay—on the one hand, it gives you permission to step outside yourself,” Rosenberg said. “But on the other hand, it can bring out something in you that doesn’t usually come out.”
12. What does Rosenberg try to convey in Paragraph 2
A. Cosplayers have a special liking for costumes.
B Cosplayers play different roles within one day.
C. Cosplayers have nothing to do but talk to themselves.
D. Cosplayers express themselves through costumes.
13. Batman and Wonder Woman are cited to reveal cosplayers’ ________.
A. childhood abuse B. need to repair personal difficulties
C. gender inequality D. eagerness to defeat other people
14. Why did Rosenberg feel surprised
A. Cosplayers changed their personality once in costumes.
B. Cosplayers couldn’t wait to socialize when costumed.
C. Many cosplayers attracted strangers to talk with them.
D. So many cosplayers were considered as pessimistic people.
15. What may serve as the most suitable title of the text
A. Devotion to cosplay B. People in costumes
C. Batman or Wonder Woman D. Psychology behind cosplay
D 13. B 14. A 15. D

根据第二段“When a cosplayer selects a particular costume, he/she is often getting inside a specific character—or combination of characters—because something about that role speaks to them personally, according to Robin S. Rosenberg, a clinical psychologist at the University of California, San Francisco.(加州大学旧金山分校的临床心理学家Robin S. Rosenberg说,当一个角色扮演者选择一套特定的服装时,他/她通常是进入了一个特定的角色——或角色的组合——因为这个角色的某些东西与他们本人相契合)”可推知,Rosenberg在第二段中试图表达角色扮演者通过服装表达自己。
根据第三段“Batman, for example, can be an especially meaningful cosplay choice for someone coping with trauma. The dark superhero faced destructive trauma when he was a child—witnessing the cruel and violent murder of his parents—which he overcame to become a hero. “When people are dressed as Batman, many talk about having experienced their own traumatic experiences,” Rosenberg said. “He survived and found meaning and purpose from his experience, and that is inspiring to them.”(例如,蝙蝠侠是一个特别有意义的角色扮演选择,对于那些正在应对创伤的人来说。这位黑暗的超级英雄在童年时目睹了父母被残忍而暴力地杀害,他经历了毁灭性的创伤,最终成为了英雄。Rosenberg说:“当人们装扮成蝙蝠侠的时候,很多人都在谈论自己经历过的创伤经历,他活了下来,并从他的经历中找到了意义和目标,这对他们来说是鼓舞人心的。”)”以及第四段“Rosenberg noted that Wonder Woman is another popular choice which calls up many women’s feelings, partly because she holds her own in the male-dominated world of costumed comics superheroes. For those cosplayers, dressing as Wonder Woman is a way of celebrating and embracing her power, Rosenberg said. 【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“So it surprised Rosenberg to discover that many cosplayers were identified as introverts. “When they wore a costume, they became much more socially outgoing,” Rosenberg said.(因此,Rosenberg惊讶地发现,许多角色扮演者都被认为是内向的。“当他们穿上服装时,他们在社交方面变得更加外向,” Rosenberg说)”可知,Rosenberg感到惊讶是因为角色扮演者一旦穿上戏服就会改变个性。故选A。
根据第一段“Cosplayers can invest considerable time, money and effort into making best head-to-toe presentations that are one-of-a-kind. But what inspires cosplayers to present themselves with so many detailed artistic designs Psychologists try to reveal the facts through research.(角色扮演者可以投入相当多的时间、金钱和精力来做出最好的从头到脚的展示,这是独一无二的。但是是什么激发了角色扮演者们用如此多的细节艺术设计来呈现自己呢?心理学家试图通过研究揭示事实)”结合全篇文章都在剖析角色扮演者背后的心理原因,并用具体的人物来说明。可知,D选项“角色扮演背后的心理学”最符合文章标题。故选D。

【16题详解】
设空在第一段末尾,应起到引起后文的作用。根据后文的小标题“When looking for a new pet, where do you start (当你想要一个新的宠物时,你应该从哪里开始 )”,“How can you be sure the pet you pick will be the right fit (你怎么能确定你选择的宠物是合适的 )”,“How can you get him to do what you need him to (你怎么能让它做你需要它做的事 )”可知,后文主要内容都是讲解如何选择宠物以及如何让它们健康快乐,因此设空句应表达此意。选项C“Here we share how to choose pets and keep them happy and healthy.(在这里我们分享如何选择宠物,并保持它们的快乐和健康。)”
根据前文“Consider adopting from a shelter, as you will be helping pets in need. If you go to a breeder, aim to see any animal in person and in the place where they were born, better with their mothers.(考虑从收容所领养,因为你将帮助需要帮助的宠物。如果你去一个饲养员那里,你可以亲眼看到任何动物,在它们出生的地方,最好和它们的母亲在一起。)”可知,选择宠物不是件容易的事情,需要等待,甚至需要去看看它们出生的地方,然后才能找到合适的宠物。设空句应对此内容进行总结。选项E“Be prepared to wait and possibly travel to find the perfect companion.(做好等待和出行的准备,以找到完美的伴侣。)”
根据后文“Some humans want an energetic dog to take jogging, while others want a lapdog to watch TV with. Take the time to find the right animal for your lifestyle.(一些人想要一只精力充沛的狗去慢跑,而另一些人想要一只哈巴狗和他们一起看电视。花点时间来找到适合你生活方式的动物。)”可知,不同的人需要不同精力类型的宠物。选项A“Energy level is also important.(精力水平也很重要。)” 故选A项。
根据后文“So it is necessary to invest time and communicate with him.(所以有必要花时间和他沟通。)” B“A dog’s intelligence can be increased through education and training.(狗的智力可以通过教育和训练来提高。)”

I had a dream from primary school: to work in television. My parents owned a little grocery store, so we were definitely not fancy people. Thankfully, my dad had raised me to have a lot of confidence. He often said, “You can do anything you want to do.” My dad was particularly supportive. He was my steady rock — always there for me.
With his help and encouragement, I was admitted to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson in Toronto. I really loved the program and worked hard and I was named the most outstanding graduate. I felt like I was already living my dream. I began to think that maybe I could apply for an internship in CBC or CTV.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself: I’m new and they're new, so if Fm going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president. I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, “Good, Faye. That’s exactly what you should do.”
With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television. Suddenly Mr. Slaight was on the phone. “I’ve heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o’clock on Monday or eleven o’clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better ” I caught him totally off guard. He stuttered a bit, and then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but excited.
I arrived at the studio on the appointed day. When Mr. Slaight took me around, he looked at me and said, “What do you want ” He sounded furious but curious. “All I want is a chance to audition. I just want you to know my face. That’s all I’m asking.”
I didn’t know whether I’d ever hear from him again but two weeks later, his secretary called, “Mr. Slaight wants to know if you’d like to come and audition for a new school life show.” I immediately answered,“Sure!”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
When I arrived at the station, I went direct into the audition and began my short performance.

Paragraph 2:
Finally came the day of my first public appearance on live TV with my parents at home watching.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
When I arrived at the station, I went direct into the audition and began my short performance. With boldness, I finished my performance relatively smoothly though palms were sweating. Never in my wildest dream did I imagine that I was indeed assigned the intern job to act on a school life show and my first public appearance on TV was in five days. After sharing the thrilling news with my dad, I received the warmest congratulations and expectations from my family. Picturing my families eagerly waiting for my performance, I worked day and night as busy as a bee for fear that I would make a fool of myself live on TV.
Finally came the day of my first public appearance on live TV with my parents at home watching. Wearing fancy dress and delicate make up, I was so proud but nervous that my show would be watched by so many audience. My mind suddenly went blank as I was immersed in my thoughts and totally forgot my lines. Deep frowns gradually climbed on my partners' face, with whose sudden vigorous pull, I was driven back to the reality. I soon came up with a little trick to make up for the embarrassing blank. As the show went on, so concentrated was I that I hardly dared to even blink my eyes. After my debut, I rang my dad with frustration and disappointment, only to reap his trust and encouragement again. It was literally dad's love that supported me along my way to be an outstanding actor.

6. How is Perfect Day’s milk different from pea milk
A. It costs less energy.
B. It is cheaper in price.
C. It has cow’s milk proteins.
D It contains less sugar and fats.
7. What does Pandya think of their product
A. It tastes like test-tube milk.
B. It needs to be tested further.
C. It is well-received by green food lovers.
D. It is produced with existing technology.

B. Cosplayers play different roles within one day.
C. Cosplayers have nothing to do but talk to themselves.
D. Cosplayers express themselves through costumes.
13. Batman and Wonder Woman are cited to reveal cosplayers’ ________.
A childhood abuse B. need to repair personal difficulties
C. gender inequality D. eagerness to defeat other people
14. Why did Rosenberg feel surprised
A. Cosplayers changed their personality once in costumes.
B. Cosplayers couldn’t wait to socialize when costumed.
C Many cosplayers attracted strangers to talk with them.
D. So many cosplayers were considered as pessimistic people.
15. What may serve as the most suitable title of the text
A. Devotion to cosplay B. People in costumes
C. Batman or Wonder Woman D. Psychology behind cosplay

I didn’t know whether I’d ever hear from him again, but two weeks later, his secretary called, “Mr. Slaight wants to know if you’d like to come and audition for a new school life show.” I immediately answered,“Sure!”
