Many pupils in school think of science as just another subject on the time-table containing more facts to be learned. This is wrong. Science does not mean believing and remembering what other people tell us. The real scientist examines facts in order to find out the truth for himself. This is called the scientific method.
Let us see how scientists work and what is meant by the scientific method. In these days we hear a lot about science, but scientists, the men and women, who do the work and make the discoveries, seem distant and strange to us. Science often appears to be very difficult, and sometimes even a kind of magic. Certainly we feel we shall never be able to understand how it works. It is difficult of course, but I think we are wrong if we believe that we can not understand it. The important thing about the scientific method is that we get answers to questions by making tests. We do not just guess the answer or believe what anybody tells us. In fact, in simple ways we all use the scientific method every day.
We can see from very simple examples that the scientific method is not only for the use of a few people called scientists, but something we can all use with advantage. But patience and hard, careful work are necessary to find out the truth.
4. What does the text mainly talk about
A. The scientific method. B. The science subject.

A. The scientists. B. School pupils. C. The Scholars. D. Everyone.
7. What can we learn from the text
A. The scientific method is too difficult to use.
B. We can find out the truth from very simple examples.
C. Care and diligence is important for the scientific method.
D. The scientific method is only for the use of a few people.

A British woman who won a S1 million prize after she was named the World's Best Teacher will use the cash to bring inspirational figures into UK schools
Andria Zafirakou,a north London secondary school teacher, said she wanted to bring about a classroom revolution (变革). “We are going to make a change, ”she said.“I’ve started a project to promote the teaching of the arts in our schools.”
The project results from the difficulties many schools have in getting artists of any sort - whether an up-and-coming local musician or a major movie star - into schools to work with and inspire children.
Zafirakou began the project at Alperton Community School, her place of work for the past twelve years. “I've seen those magic moments when children are talking to someone they are inspired by - their eyes are shining and their faces light up,” she said. “We need artists . more than ever in our schools."
Artist Michael Craig-Martin said: “Andria's brilliant project to bring artists from all fields into direct contact with children is particularly welcome at a time when the arts are being downgraded in schools." It was a mistake to see the arts as unnecessary, he added.
Historian Sir Simon Schama is also a supporter of the project. He said that arts education in schools was not just an add-on. “It is absolutely necessary. The future depends on creativity and creativity depends on the young. What will remain of us when artificial intelligence takes over will be our creativity, and it is our creative spirit, our visionary sense of freshness, that has been our strength for centuries."

Owning a pet, like a dog or a cat, especially for five years or more, may be linked to slower cognitive decline (认知衰退) in older adults, according to a new study.
“Previous studies have suggested that the human-animal link may have health benefits like decreasing blood pressure and stress,” said the study author Tiffany Braley. “Our results suggest raising pet may also be protective against cognitive decline.”
The study looked at cognitive data from 1.369 senior adults with an average age of 65 who had normal cognitive skills at the start of the study. A total of 53% owned pets and 32% were long-term pet owners who owned pets for five years or more.
Researchers used data from the Health and Retirement Study. In that study, people were given several cognitive tests. Researchers used those cognitive tests to record cognitive score for each person, ranging from 0 to 27. The score included common tests of subtraction (减法), number counting and word memory. Researchers then used participants’ cognitive scores to judge the connections between years of pet ownership and cognitive function.
Over six years, the cognitive scores decreased at a slower rate in pet owners. This difference was stronger among long-term pet owners. Considering other factors known to affect cognitive function, the study showed that long-term pet owners usually had a higher cognitive score compared to non-pet owners. The researchers also found that the cognitive benefits connected with longer pet ownership were stronger for college educated adults and men.
“As stress can negatively affect cognitive function, the possible stress-reducing effects of pet ownership could provide a proper reason for our findings,” said Braley.
12. What is the finding of Tiffany Braley’s study
A. Both dogs and cats make perfect pets. B. Pets may help keep the brain work well.
C. Females tend to be long-term pet owners. D. A human-animal link helps decrease blood pressure.
13. How did the researchers carry out their study
A. By referring to previous studies.
B. By monitoring several cognitive tests.
C. By tracking the changes in cognitive scores.
D. By correcting data from the Health and Retirement Study.
14. What is Braley’s attitude towards the study results
A. Puzzled. B. Cautious. C. Surprised. D. Unsatisfied.
15. What would be the best title of the text
A. Why should we keep pets
B. How long should we keep pets
C. Does the human-animal link have health benefits
D. Do pets have a positive effect on people’s brain health
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. D

【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Owning a pet, like a dog or a cat, especially for five years or more, may be linked to slower cognitive decline (认知衰退) in older adults, according to a new study.(一项新的研究表明,养宠物,比如狗或猫,尤其是养了五年或更长时间的宠物,可能会延缓老年人的认知能力下降)”可知,文章主要介绍了一项新的研究结果,研究表明随着时间的推移,养宠物与认知能力下降的速度减慢有关。由此可知,D选项“宠物对人的大脑健康有积极影响吗?”最符合文章标题。故选D。

Among the decorative things in a fifteen-year-old girl’s room, one stood out—a bright blue vase (花瓶). Not a perfect or beautiful vase, it’s broken in several places. The owner of the vase has carefully repaired it, but cracks remain. If this vase could talk, it would tell the story of two girls and a friendship.
Amy and June met on an airplane on their way home from Bangkok where their fathers, who were business partners, were attending meetings. June sat behind Amy. Halfway toward home. Amy turned around and gave June a bright blue vase. June accepted it. They smiled shyly at each other. On that day, a simple friendship between two four-year-old girls was built.
Years flew by. Amy and June grew up together, played together, studied together and, naturally, became closest friends. They supported and comforted each other whenever the other faced sadness, embarrassment, etc.
However, life isn’t a bed of roses. People change as they grow up. Sometimes these changes are hard to accept. And even the friendship can be destroyed. When Amy was 14, she admired a group of very popular girls in her and June’s school. Thus. Amy began hanging out with them and regarded them as her good friends.
Although June was hurt, she tried to be understanding. She was still there for Amy each time Amy found the popular girls didn’t seem to like her and needed a shoulder to cry on. But Amy wasn’t there when June needed her.
Upset about the state of their friendship, June finally invited Amy to her house to talk. When June tried to talk about her difficulties and her problems, Amy turned her back on her by saying. “Later.” Instead, Amy asked June for ideas for what she could do to be accepted by the group of girls. June became angry.
She shouted, “What am I to you, Amy Your friend or just your little dog ” Amy was annoyed and shouted back. “That is it. June! I hate you!”
Amy rushed out of June’s room, shutting the door hard behind her.

【答案】范文
A blue vase on the shelf jumped and fell onto the floor, breaking into pieces. Unstoppable tears flowed as June picked up the pieces. Ten years of friendship broke like the vase. June felt great pain. After their argument, Amy eventually realized June was her true friend and that her behavior hurt June. Amy was so regretful. Soon, June’s 15th birthday came. She missed Amy. She could still remember an image of 4-year-old Amy holding out the vase to her. Suddenly, the doorbell rang.
When June opened the door, Amy handed her a gift, saying. “Hap, happy birthday. June!” The former best friends looked at each other, their emotions mirrored on each other’s faces. Amy pressed the gift into June’s hand and ran down the pathway. Going back to her room, June sat down and opened the gift. It was a notebook. Attached to it was a note that read, “Dear June, I’m sorry.” June finally felt relieved. She called Amy and then they decided to repair the vase together. That’s why the vase told the story of two girls and a friendship.

C. The scientific discoveries. D. The real scientists.
5. Which of the following does the author agree with
A. We all understand how science works.

C. We sometimes feel science confusing.
D. We know answers by making guesses.
6. Who can use the scientific method
A. The scientists. B. School pupils. C. The Scholars. D. Everyone.
7. What can we learn from the text
A. The scientific method is too difficult to use.
B. We can find out the truth from very simple examples.
C. Care and diligence is important for the scientific method.
D. The scientific method is only for the use of a few people.

A British woman who won a S1 million prize after she was named the World's Best Teacher will use the cash to bring inspirational figures into UK schools.
8. What will Zafirakou do with her prize money
A. Make a movie. B. Build new schools.
C. Run a project. D. Help local musicians.
9. What does Craig-Martin think of the teaching of the arts in UK schools

A. Moral principles. B. Interpersonal skills.
C. Creative abilities. D. Positive worldviews.
