I still remember that busy autumn evening as I hurried with my eldest daughter, Athena, to get to her classroom on time for the parent-teacher night. We walked in and all eyes were on me. A few adults quickly quieted their kids’ whispers. A classmate yelled to my daughter, “What’s wrong with your mom’s face ” Shocked, I started to explain my condition, but my six-year-old daughter looked at him and said, “It’s my mom’s birthmark! Don’t be rude!” I was extremely proud of how she handled that situation.
I was quite young when I realized I looked different because of my large facial birthmark. I always thought I would be alone because of it. Being compared to Batman’s evil Two-Face made me believe I could never find love. But I was lucky enough to meet my husband, who saw me for who I am inside. When I had my first daughter, I was overjoyed, but I began to worry if the world would judge my children. I always worried I might pass my condition onto my children; I didn’t want them to grow up feeling judged. Unfortunately, my facial difference has influenced my children. My daughters get disinvited from birthday parties or sleepovers, or I learn certain kids are no longer friends with mine after their parents saw me at school.
When my kids were young, I explained how my special purple skin was rare and we talked about acceptance and never judging others on how they look. When my girls kiss my purple-skinned cheek, I feel “normal” around them and their unconditional love. With time going by, both my daughters have become my strongest supporters. Thanks to them, I’ve begun to feel more self-confident as I try to be a good role model.
Their worldviews are similar to mine. We see the world a little differently and with a kinder, more accepting heart. As the saying goes, your daughters will grow up to be your best friends. I know that will be the case for me!

Blue whales are the largest creatures to live on Earth after the dinosaurs. These amazing creatures are not only the largest whale species but also the largest mammal(哺乳动物) species to have ever existed on Earth.
The average length of a blue whale is 23—27 meters and its weight is from 100 to 150 tons. In spite of their large size, blue whales can swim at a fast speed of 25 to 30 miles per hour. The blue whales are not really blue in color but are actually gray. Blue whales feed on krill(磷虾).They take in a lot of water. They have a very unique way of communicating with each other by sending low frequency sound waves, which is even higher than the sound produced by a plane.
Before the whale hunting time started, blue whales could be found in all major oceans. Once, there were more than 200,000 blue whales that swam in the oceans. The Seas of Canada, North Atlantic Ocean and the seas to the south of Madagascar are among the most popular regions where blue whales can be found nowadays. Other major parts are the Antarctic Ocean and the Davis Strait.
Early whaling was limited by simple tools and whaling skills. So the damage to whale populations was not great. But with the development of powerful guns and steam-powered boats, whaling advanced. More whales were hunted at a rapid rate. In 1931 alone,29,649 whales were killed. Humans competed to hunt the big animals. Besides, the number of blue whales is low due to more man’s deep-sea activities.

Regularly practicing facial “yoga”, or exercises for your facial muscles, may actually make you look younger, early research suggests.
In a new study, researchers taught 27 middle-aged women(ages 40 to 65) how to perform32 facial exercises, which included simple actions such as smiling in the cheeks. After this training, the participants performed these exercises at home for 30 minutes a day, every day for eight weeks. On the ninth week of the study, the participants reduced the frequency of their 30-minute exercise routine to every other day (three to four days a week), and continued the exercise for 20 weeks.
The participants also had their photos taken at the beginning and end of the study, and several doctors rated these photos using a standard method for assessing the appearance of aging in the face and neck. The raters, who didn’t know which photos were taken before and which photos were taken after the exercises, also estimated the age of the person in the photo.
After 20 weeks, the participants had better ratings for the fullness of their cheeks, on average, compared with their ratings at the start of the study. In other words, their cheeks looked fuller after their 20-week facial exercise. This change in cheek fullness also made the participants look younger. Raters estimated that the participants looked nearly three years younger after the exercises, compared with before.
However, the findings are preliminary and should be confirmed with a larger study, the researchers said. And many questions remain about exactly which exercises are beneficial and who might benefit from them. “The study involved middle-aged, mainly white women, who stayed in the study for 20 weeks, so it’s not known whether the effects seen in the study would apply to men, or to people of other ages or races. It’s also not clear how long people need to perform the exercises in order to see benefits,” lead study author Dr. Murad Alam said.
32.What did the researchers first do in the study
A.They divided the participants into groups.
B.They trained the participants.
C.They took photos of the participants.
D.They checked the faces of the participants.
33.What was the participants’ specific change according to the study
A.They looked healthier. B.They got to smile more frequently.
C.They became interested in Yoga. D.They got full er facial outline.
34.What does the underlined word “confirmed” in the last paragraph mean
A.challenged B.questioned
C.proved D.affected
35.What can be inferred from Dr.Murad Alam’s words
A.More facial exercises will be performed.
B.Men participants will appear in later studies.
C.Middle-aged women will not be included.
D.20 weeks is enough to test if an exercise works.

In the first and second grade in junior high school, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn’t in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people’s conversations.
I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy, I often imagined that I was the main character in the story. My teacher, Mrs. Sather, always encouraged me to write more and be myself. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with great efforts. I thought she was one of the first people to see my inner strength.
One day, she showed us a play she had written and announced that our class was going to perform it. “I’ll begin to choose all the performers tomorrow,” she said, “I need someone who is not afraid to be onstage in front of a lot of people to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody wants to try ” A few excited hands shot up—mine, of course, was not one of them and Mrs. Sather smiled. “We’ll talk more about it later,” she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.
“I will never do that,” I thought. But after rereading the play, I was deeply attracted by the story and couldn’t help imagining myself to be the main character Dorothy. There seemed to be a new person inside me, a much braver, more outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear. However, I still felt shy and could never picture myself acting in a play in front of two hundred people. Having struggled for a few minutes, I still did not know how to make the decision.

My English Learning Experience
I’ve learned English for years and have made great progress in it. But the process used to be painful for me.
When I was in primary school, I found it difficult to pronounce new words properly, let alone remembering them. With my teacher’s help, I began to set small, achievable goals and practiced more. Listening to English songs and watching English movies also helped excite my interest and increase my confidence. Now I’m no longer afraid of learning English and have become a passionate English learner who can communicate with foreigners fluently.
In my point of view, the secret to learning English lies in hard work and a strong belief in yourself. So be confident and try your best. I’m sure you can make it too!

One week later, it was time for me to perform on the stage.I felt really nervous at first. Then I remembered all the hard work that I’d put in over the last week.I devoted myself to the play, studying the character, memorizing lines and practicing before the mirror.Gradually, I became more and more confident on the stage.Through misty eyes, I saw Mrs. Sather, who was smiling at me and looking at me encouragingly.I knew I made it! I was very grateful to Mrs. Sather.

Text 1
W: You look a little pale. What’s wrong Stomachache again
M: No. I have to give a speech in class this morning. I stayed up all night thinking about it.
Text 2
M: Hi, Julie. I’m ringing to remind you that I’ll pick you up tonight.
W: Thank you. When will you come
M: The film doesn’t start until 8: 15. I’ll leave here at 7: 20. It’ll take 20 minutes to get to your house.
Text 3
W: Wait! Don’t sit on that chair. It’s broken. I’ve been putting off fixing that chair for over a week.
M: Oh, thanks. You’d better hurry up before someone gets hurt.
W: I’ll see to it this afternoon.
Text 4
M: Have you been to the new department store yet
W: I went there on Saturday, but I drove around the parking lot for nearly an hour looking for a space before I finally gave up and came home.
M: I think I’ll wait a few days before I go.
Text 5
M: Wow…so beautiful. I like the color you painted the walls. Why did you decide on purple
W: I was inspired by a movie I saw last month.
M: I think you should get a new carpet. This one doesn’t match anything in the room.

M: Have you seen the latest play at the Golden Street Theater It’s called April Dreaming and I just read a great review about it in the paper.
W: I saw it last weekend with my friend and it was amazing. I highly recommend it.
M: Well, I was trying to get tickets for Friday night, but they were sold out. Saturday, too. That’s a big disappointment because I really want to see it.

M: Hello, Bertie.
W: Hi. I want to find a place to have supper. There are many restaurants in this area. It is difficult to decide which one to go to. When I choose a restaurant, I always take its nearby restaurants into consideration; it must be the super one among all of them.
M: It sounds reasonable. But it’s simpler for me to pick a restaurant as long as the restaurant is big enough and has seats available.
W: Oh, look! I think this one is pretty good.
M: It seems that the number of seats there is great.
W: OK. Let’s go.

W: The weekend is almost here. Let’s do something together.
M: You’re right. How about going camping
W: It’s a bit cold for camping, don’t you think
M: Alright, let’s go hiking instead.
W: Hmm, I don’t have energy to do that. Every time I go back from hiking, I need several days to have a rest. How about going to the museum
M: Well, it doesn’t sound very exciting, but I’ll go. Then afterwards, let’s go out for dinner.
W: Why don’t we eat at home instead I went shopping this morning and there’s a lot of food in the fridge.
M: Sounds good. Well, how about going to see a movie in the cinema after dinner
W: Great. Now let’s try and decide what movie to watch.

W: Well, I’m really worried about how I’m going to deal with university life. Maybe if I knew the university a bit better, that might help.
M: Do you have a map of the university
W: Yes.
M: Well, let’s look at it together. OK, we are here now in Dalton House. Opposite this building is the Arts Block where you will find the computers. The computer rooms are open from 9: 00a. m. till8: 00 p. m. on weekdays.
W: Fine.
M: Another important building is the students’ union. To get to the students’ union you keep going down University Lane, past the Science Block on your left. Opposite the Science Block are the Chemistry labs and the students’ union is just on the right, next to Lab B.
W: Fine. But I get a bit confused about the directions.
M: Probably the best thing to do is to walk around and familiarize yourself with everything. Now I need you to fill in this form. Take it away with you and then make an appointment to see me again and we’ll go over it. My telephone number is on the form. You can ring me anytime, except on Thursday.

M: Attention please! Now I will give you a brief introduction to the Winter Festival. It is a free event for all people to enjoy, and is organized by a team of volunteers. The first Winter Festival was introduced the year before last. Sadly due to a lack of money no festival was held last year. This year the government may provide $15,000 to the festival. They also persuaded the businessmen around the town to offer the rest $5,000.
There will be a free art exhibition on Friday 18, Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 December in the Center Park of the town. The opening hours are from 10:00 a. m. to 4:00 p. m. , and there is an opening night only on Friday, from 7: 30 p. m. to 10: 00 p. m .Different from other exhibitions, this art exhibition is really a special one because the public will have the chance to watch the paintings which are from the town’s school. And all the paintings are created by the students. It is great that the Festival is going to host a wonderful sound of music in the Main Exhibition Hall this year. This programme aims to show some of the musical talents that we have in town. Everyone watching the performance had better not wear formal clothes, but fancy dress. And in the programme, you will hear classical music, pop music, rock music and operas.
