Early February, I was flying up to Ohio. Well prepared, I had everything in my favour — fuel for five hours, charts in order, my flight plan on my lap, and a beautiful clear sky.
I was wrong.
I had heard about Alberta Clippers coming out of Canada. I knew all about them — how an entire air mass was streaming along at over sixty miles an hour.
That morning, the Weather Briefer informed me that an Alberta Clipper was going over Chicago about the time I got to the airport. Chicago was some 400 miles from my destination — not a factor, or so I thought. That was the first hint I missed.
The controller called and asked if I wanted to adjust my flight plan. I did the check and everything was in the green. So I told him no. Twenty minutes later the controller called again asking whether I wanted to adjust my flight plan. I checked everything. All was fine. I ignored that hint. I was fooled by the smooth air and limited experience with a rapidly moving air mass that was not changing violently. The Alberta Clipper was clipping along.
The first blast of turbulence (气流) struck my plane. I got slammed into the roof, and then slammed sideways hitting the window with such force up my nose that I started bleeding.
After a 2-hour flight of 100 miles I realized fuel was now an issue. So was landing. I called Flight’ Following. We. figured out the airport I could land.
The engine stopped. So did my heart. There is no quiet as quietly stunning as this one at such an altitude. I had run out of fuel in the left tank, and only a little in my right tank. The engine quit for a second time. I declared an emergency. I was told that I might get another few minutes of fuel if I gently banked the airplane. Luckily; it worked. Then, the engine quit for the last time. I was a glider now. I made a long lazy spiral descent. Down I went. I stopped at the very end of the runway.
I made so many mistakes, missed so many clues, and showed my ignorance so much that I beat myself up over and over again in my mind. I learned textbook descriptions of Alberta Clippers and real-life experience with one are totally different. I will never forget the sound of that silence.
I flew home the next day. Older. Wiser. Humbler. Lucky.
25. We can know from the passage that Alberta Clippers ______.
A. can bring snowstorms
B. are quick-moving air masses
C. are violently changing air pressure
D. can lead to a sudden temperature drop
26. What mainly led to the author’s missing all the hints
A. His lack of flying experience.
B. His poor preparation for the journey.
C. His misjudgement about the air mass.
D. His overconfidence in his piloting skills.
27. The passage describes ______.
A. a rewarding training B. a serious accident
C. a painful exploration D. a narrow escape

Eudaimonia is an Ancient Greek word, particularly stressed by the philosophers Plato and Aristotle, which deserves far more attention than it has because it corrects the shortfalls (缺失)in one of the most central, but troubling words in our modem language: happiness.
When we nowadays try to clearly express the purpose of our lives,it is the word “happiness” that we commonly turn to. We tell ourselves and others that the most important principle for our jobs, our relationships and the conduct of our day-to-day lives is the pursuit of happiness. It sounds like an innocent enough idea, but too much reliance on the term means that we frequently unfairly tend to quit or, at least, heavily question a great many challenging but worthwhile situations. The Ancient Greeks did not believe that the purpose of life was to be happy; they proposed that it was to achieve Eudaimonia, a word which has been best translated as “fulfilment”.
What distinguishes happiness from fulfilment is pain. It is very possible to be fulfilled and—at the same time—under pressure, suffering physically or mentally, overburdened and, quite frequently, in an irritable (易怒)mood. This is a slight psychological difference that is hard for the word “happiness” to capture, for it’s tricky to speak of being happy yet unhappy, or happy yet suffering. However, such a combination is readily accommodated within the respected and noble-sounding idea of Eudaimonia.
The word encourages us to trust that many of life’s most worthwhile projects will sometimes be in conflict with contentment, and yet will be worth pursuing. Properly exploring our professional talents, managing a household, keeping a relationship going, creating a new business venture or engaging in politics... none of these goals are likely to leave us cheerful and grinning on a daily basis. They will, in fact, involve us in all manner of challenges that will deeply exhaust and weaken us, provoke (激怒)and wound us. And yet we will perhaps, at the end of our lives, still feel that the tasks were worth undertaking. Through them, we’ll have achieved something deeper and more interesting than happiness.
With the word Eudaimonia in mind, we can stop imagining that we are aiming for a pain-free existence—and then blaming ourselves unfairly for being in a bad mood. We’ll know that we are trying to do something far more important than smile all the time: we're striving to do justice to our full human potential.
28. What do we know about “Eudaimonia” from the passage
A. It was first created by two Greek philosophers.
B. It has received a lot of attention from the public.
C. It still has some shortfalls that need to be corrected.
D. It was regarded as the purpose of life in ancient Greece.
29. According to Paragraph 3, happiness .
A. is the opposite of fulfillment
B. is free from physical or mental pain
C. stresses the psychological difference
D. serves as a respected and noble life goal
30. We can learn from the passage that .
A. aiming for happiness may lead to wrong self-blaming
B. goals that wound and weaken us result in happiness
C. challenges leading to contentment are worth undertaking
D. feeling fulfilled means we should avoid tough situations
31. The passage encourages the readers to .
A. find fulfillment with all efforts B. seek for a pain-free existence
C. keep optimistic whatever happens D. balance happiness and suffering
D
At a museum in Vietnam, Lena Bui’s film Where Birds Dance Their Last reflected on the beauty and vulnerability of Vietnamese feather farms after Bird Flu. During a festival in Rwanda, Ellen Reid’s audio experience Soundwalk was shared in a hopeful discussion about music, parks and mental health. These are a few of the things I have helped bring to life over the years, working at the intersection of scientific research, the arts and advocacy to support science in solving global health challenges.
Science is key to addressing these issues. But it isn’t the only key. To achieve its potential and for its advances to be implemented and reach all who could benefit, science depends on trust and good relationships. People might not always see science as relevant, trustworthy or meaningful to their lives. There are reasons why some see science as having a chequered past, from nuclear weapons to eugenics, and are therefore uninterested in, or suspicious of, what it proposes. Others feel excluded by the incomprehensibility of hyper specialist knowledge.
In its capacity to build upon and test an evidence base, science is powerful, but researchers and funders haven’t been as good at ensuring this evidence base responds to the needs and interests of diverse communities, or informs policy makers to take action. Science might be perceived as distancing itself from the personal, the poetic and the political, yet it is precisely these qualities that can be most influential when it comes to public interest in atopic or how a government prioritizes a decision.
A moving story well told can be more memorable than a list of facts. This is where the arts come in. Artists can give us different perspectives with which to consider and reimagine the world together. They can redress the proclaimed objectivity in science by bringing stories —subjectivities —into the picture, and these can help foster a sense of connection and hope.
In 2012, I set up artist residencies in medical research centres around the world. Bui was attached to the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Vietnam. The head of the research team was delighted, finding that Bui, as a Vietnamese artist, had license to be in, and to share useful insights from, villages where infectious disease researchers weren’t welcome. Six years later, I led Wellcome’s Contagious Cities program, which established artist residencies worldwide to support locally led explorations of epidemic preparedness. The recent pandemic made this work more noticeable, and has informed our Mindscapes program which is currently sharing experiences of mental health through the work of artists.
With pandemic, climate and mental health crises upon us, rising inequality and what feels like an increasingly broken world, never has there been more need to build and nurture hopeful and imaginative spaces to grow human connection and shared purpose for the common good. Science and the arts can work hand in glove to achieve this.
32. The author lists two works in Paragraph 1 mainly to ______.
A. reveal the gap between science and art B. prove his competence in both science and art
C. introduce successful science-related artworks D. show that science can be promoted in art forms
33. What does the underlined word “chequered” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Recent and remote. B. Good and bad.
C Usual and unusual. D. Peaceful and scary.
34. Which of the following would the author agree
A. Policy-makers base their decisions on science. B. Researchers popularize science effectively.
C. Science is well received among the public. D. The arts help people build connections.
35. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A The Value of the Arts to Science B. Where Do Science and the Arts Meet
C. A New Way to Fight Pandemic—the Arts D. Which Matters More, Science or the Arts

B
After a 2-hour flight of 100 miles, I realized fuel was now an issue.
B 26. C 27. D

由第五段中的“I ignored that hint. I was fooled by the smooth air and limited experience with a rapidly moving air mass that was not changing violently. (我忽略了这个暗示。我被平稳的空气和有限的经验愚弄了,认为快速移动的空气团没有剧烈的变化)”可知,是作者对气团的错误判断使他忽略了暗示。故选C项。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。由第六段中的“The first blast of turbulence (气流) struck my plane. I got slammed into the roof, and then slammed sideways hitting the window with such force up my nose that I started bleeding. (我的飞机受到了第一次气流的冲击。我被摔在顶上,然后侧身撞在窗户上,鼻子上的力量太大,我开始流血)”、倒数第三段中的“I had run out of fuel in the left tank, and only a little in my right tank. The engine quit for a second time. I declared an emergency. (我的左油箱没油了,而我的右油箱只有一点油。发动机又一次熄火了。我宣布了紧急情况。)”及“I stopped at the very end of the runway. (我在跑道的尽头停了下来)”和最后一段“I flew home the next day. Older. Wiser. Humbler. Lucky. (第二天我就飞回家了。年纪大了。要更聪明的,更谦卑。真幸运)”可知,文章主要描述了作者死里逃生的一次飞行经历。故选D项。
C
It is very possible to be fulfilled and—at the same time—under pressure, suffering physically or mentally, overburdened and, quite frequently, in an irritable (易怒的)mood.
D 29. B 30. A 31. A
由第二段“The Ancient Greeks did not believe that the purpose of life was to be happy; they proposed that it was to achieve Eudaimonia, a word which has been best translated as “fulfilment”.古希腊人不相信生活的目的是快乐;他们提出,生活的目的是为了实现Eudaimonia,这个词最好翻译 理解为“满足”可知,在古希腊,Eudaimonia被认为是生活的目的。故D选项正确。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。由第三段“What distinguishes happiness from fulfilment is pain. It is very possible to be fulfilled and—at the same time—under pressure, suffering physically or mentally, overburdened and, quite frequently, in an irritable mood. This is a slight psychological difference that is hard for the word “happiness” to capture”快乐与满足的区别在于痛苦。
由末段“With the word Eudaimonia in mind, we can stop imagining that we are aiming for a pain-free existence—and then blaming ourselves unfairly for being in a bad mood.”
由第四段“The word encourages us to trust that many of life’s most worthwhile projects will sometimes be in conflict with contentment...Through them, we’ll have achieved something deeper and more interesting than happiness.”
由末段“With the word Eudaimonia in mind, we can stop imagining that we are aiming for a pain-free existence—and then blaming ourselves unfairly for being in a bad mood.”
C. Usual and unusual. D. Peaceful and scary.
34. Which of the following would the author agree
A. Policy-makers base their decisions on science. B. Researchers popularize science effectively.
C. Science is well received among the public. D. The arts help people build connections.
35. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. The Value of the Arts to Science B. Where Do Science and the Arts Meet
C. A New Way to Fight Pandemic—the Arts D. Which Matters More, Science or the Arts
D 33. B 34. D 35. A
