Have you ever found yourself in a group of people with similar ways of thinking and interests to yours They understand you. They really get you. They may even be wearing similar clothing to yours. We have a great expression for this: Birds of a feather flock together. This means people of the same kind or with the same tastes and interests often find each other.
We have many similar expressions, and many of them use the word “mind” or “brain.” If someone thinks like me, I can say we are like-minded. I can also say we are of the same mind. There is also something called a hive mind. In a beehive; the bees all work together to reach the same goal. People who are part of a hive mind have similar thoughts, ideas, and opinions.
If you are a spiritual kind of person, you can call them your kindred spirits (灵魂伴侣). If you are more of a science person, you can say you are on the same wavelength. And if you are a person who likes to make things, you can use the expression: cut from the same cloth. All these expressions mean the same thing — you feel a strong connection to someone and feel very similar to them.
We have another expression that can also be used in this situation. But we only use it when we have a similar idea with another person: Great minds think alike. If you often listen to VOA Learning English, you belong to a community of like-minded people: People who want to practice their English.

To fight against learning loss over the vacation, Tennessee is funding (提供资金) the delivery of surprise books to keep almost a quarter million kids interested in reading.
In response, Governor’s Early Literacy Foundation (GELF) has taken a step further by expanding its K-3 Home Library program to include all lower grade students in a public school across the state. Working in partnership with Scholastic, the program will provide 1.2 million books for over 200,000 students, teachers and librarians.
To ensure the books reach their intended readers, they will be delivered directly to the homes of participating students in six packages filled with grade-level books, at no cost to families or schools. One parent who joined the program last summer said her son struggled to read but was improving every week. These couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. A Morgan County educator praised the program for getting much-needed books into the hands of students who may not have access (使用的机会) to them at home, for it can have a significant impact on their overall academic performance.
“If we don’t get reading right, everything else can go wrong,” said James Pond, GELF President. “Our goal is to encourage a culture of reading in Tennessee. We achieve this by meeting students and providing them with the books and resources they need to become lifelong learners. We hope other states look to us as a leader in early literacy (读写能力) efforts.”
Most parents reported that their children were excited to receive the books and said they were valuable to their families. The books included in the Home Library program were selected by a group of 28 Tennessee educators. With this program, Tennessee is showing that it takes vacation learning loss seriously and promises to improve literacy rates for its young students. It’s a model that other states would be willing to follow.

One day, Charlie’s mother noticed her son’s situation. As Charlie stared sadly at his textbooks, she sat beside him with a warm smile that made the room a little brighter. “Why don’t we turn this into a game ” she suggested, her voice gentle and encouraging.
Together, they created fun quizzes and made colorful flashcards. They turned historical dates into a song and math problems into a treasure hunt Charlie’s mother believed in learning with joy, and she never stopped smiling, even when Charlie felt like giving up. As weeks passed, Charlie began to smile too, his fear of lessons slowly disappearing. He wasn’t the top of his class, but he was climbing, one cheerful step at a time. Then came the day of the big science test. Charlie walked into class with a nervous heart but remembered his mother’s encouraging smiles. When the results came, his name was at the top! In disbelief, he rushed home to find a note on the fridge, “The true test was believing in yourself, and that, you have done extremely well!”
But along with the note was a mysterious envelope, sealed (封口) with a smiley face sticker (贴纸). It wasn’t from his mother, and Charlie couldn’t guess who else knew about their little secret. 考查句子结构。As Charlie stared sadly at his textbooks是as引导的时间状语从句,可翻译为“当查理伤心地盯着他的课本时”;she sat beside him with a warm smile可翻译为“她坐在他身边,带着温暖的微笑,”,she sat是主谓句型,介词短语beside him作地点状语,with a warm smile为方式状语;that made the room a little brighter可翻译为“这让房间顿时明亮起来”,that引导限制性定语从句,修饰先行词smile。故翻译为:当查理伤心地盯着他的课本时,她坐在他身边,带着温暖的微笑,这让房间顿时明亮起来。
【47题详解】

Then came the day of the big science test. Charlie walked into class with a nervous heart but remembered his mother’s encouraging smiles. When the results came, his name was at the top!( 几个星期过去了,查理也开始微笑了,他对上课的恐惧慢慢消失了。 Charlie overcame his fear, faced difficulties with a smile, and happily climbed up step by step, finally was at the top.
【50题详解】

In a little house filled with laughter and love, there was a boy named Charlie who was always struggling with his studies. Because of his low grades, he often came home disheartened.
Who could it be from, and what could be inside Charlie’s journey of learning was about to get even more interesting.
