课时作业(一) Unit 1 Section Ⅰ Welcome to the unit & Reading
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
In America, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.
Even though they've done this already in the middle school, it's still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places in the school.
One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. These clubs allow students from different grades. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention increasing their chances in future college applications (申请). The school office will have a list of activities offered in the school and information on how to join them.
What's more, to have a great start in high school, students can write down some of their worries, and ask for help from teachers and school workers.

You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Maybe your friends from middle school are going to a different high school. Even if you know other freshmen (新生), you still feel nervous that you don't know any upper classmen. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces
Most high schools hold a freshman orientation (训练) before school actually starts. These are helpful not only because you learn your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but you also get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.
When you talk to people at orientation, you'll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They're all new to the school and don't know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.
The work in high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learned in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it's a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
High school also has more after school activities than middle school do, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
Middle school taught you the basics of academics, time management, and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. High school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.

I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with praise, he will learn to love himself and will be successful in his own way.
Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he would concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn't even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting frustrated, but then it hit me. I started noticing his answers were much quicker and accurate (准确的) when he stood up. Could he be more intent (专心的) while standing up
This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to success. This child would have the discipline (纪律) to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life.
Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality traits (特点) and all you can do is loving and accepting them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids' best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their way.
I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine. We need to learn to accept our kids' ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn't mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being individual (个人的) and unique (独一无二的). It makes us free and happy and that's just the way I want my kids to live their own life.
1.At the beginning, the author tried to keep his son seated in order to make him ________.
A.pay more attention to his study
B.keep silent in the room
C.finish his homework on time
D.get right answers
2.Inspired by the case of his son, the author began to doubt ________.
A.the importance of parents
B.the old form of education
C.the relationship between kids and their parents
D.the good grades of some kids
3.According to the passage, which of the following statements is right
A.We should help kids correct their wrong ways.
B.Parents should study their kids' DNA.
C.Kids should be taught to behave themselves.
D.Parents should love and accept their kids.
4.Which of the following would be the best title of the passage
A.Study Hard and You'll Be Successful
B.Be Friendly to Your Children
C.Children's Success in Their Own Style
D.Parents' Help with Their Children's Study

Like any new ninth grader on the first day of school, Joemar Class had ninth grader emotion (情绪). He was not used to the school in Hartford. He was used to going to school in his hometown of Florida, used to seeing his friends, and used to having classes in Spanish.
“Nervioso,” he said in Spanish.
We first met Joemar in mid October in the San Juan Airport. His father, Guillermo Class, had sold his car to buy plane tickets to get his kids and fly them up from Puerto Rico. The island was almost destroyed by the deadly storm—Hurricane Maria.
Now, they are settling into their new home in Hartford's South End. A week later, using his wife's car, Class drove 16 year old Joemar to Bulkeley High School. After a short ride, he got out in front of his new school. Inside, he met Gretchen Levitz—the school's program director.
“I see you have new uniform (校服),” said Levitz. “You look great. Are you ready for a good first day?”
Then he met a couple of teachers.
“Hello,” they each said in Spanish. They asked where he was from, and told him they were happy to see him. Then Levitz took him on a quick tour of the school before classes began—to her office, the school store, the library, and the dining hall.
A total of 19 languages are spoken in Bulkeley High School. “We have so many new students coming here from other countries every single day,” said Levitz. “So it's not like he's the only one who has that feeling.”
“You could tell he was a little worried,” Guillermo said as we left. “But, at the same time, he was looking forward to it.”
5.What kind of feeling did Joemar have on his first day of school
A.Angry. B.Excited.
C.Nervous. D.Relaxed.
6.Why did Joemar leave Florida
A.His hometown was hit by a terrible storm.

C.He wanted to see his mother.
D.He expected to have a new life.
7.What did Joemar do before he walked into his new classroom
A.He had a long talk with his father.
B.He learned some simple Spanish words.
C.He said hello to some of his classmates.
D.He had a short look around his new school.
8.What can we learn about Bulkeley High School

My teacher held up a piece of broken glass and asked, “Who broke this window?”
Thirty boys tried to think about not only what they had done, but also what our teacher might have found out. She seldom became angry, but she was this time.
“Oh,” I thought. I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a naughty throw of a baseball. If I admitted guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that I didn't even get an allowance. “My father is going to have a fit,” I thought. I didn't want to raise my hand, but some force much stronger than I was pulled it skyward. I told the truth, “I did it.” It was hard enough to say what I had done.
My teacher took down a book from one of our library shelves and I had never known my teacher to strike a student, but I feared she was going to start with me.
“I know how much you like birds,” she said as she stood looking down at my guilt ridden face. “Here is that field guide about birds that you are constantly checking out. It is yours now. It's time we got a new one for the school anyway. You will not be punished as long as you remember that I am not rewarding you for your misdeed, but I am rewarding you for your truthfulness.”
I couldn't believe it! I wasn't being punished and I was getting my own bird field guide—the very one that I had been saving up money to buy.

What a day! I started at my new school this morning and had the best time. I made lots of new friends and really liked my teachers. I was nervous last night, but I had no reason to be nervous. Everyone was so friendly and polite. They made me feel at ease. It was like I'd been at the school for a hundred years!
The day started very early at 7:00 a.m. I had my breakfast downstairs with my mom. She could tell that I was very nervous. Mom kept asking me what was wrong. She told me I had nothing to worry about and that everyone was going to love me. If they didn't love me, Mom said to send them her way for a good talking to. I couldn't stop laughing.
My mom dropped me off at the school gate about five minutes before the bell. A little blonde (金发的) girl got dropped off at the same time and started waving (招手) at me. She ran over and told me her name was Abigail. She was very nice and we became close straight away. We spent all the morning together and began to talk to another girl called Stacey. The three of us sat together in class all day and we even made our way home together! Time went on so quickly. Enjoy the challenge of a new term
The new term is finally here, which means, of course, it's time to return to school.
For many students across China, that also means having to leave home for the next several months and move into a school dormitory.
Being away from our family for a long time, however, often leads to homesickness, a feeling that most students have experienced at some point.
A study by the UK's National Union of Students found that up to 70 percent of UK students living away from home experience homesickness within their first few weeks of being away.
But homesickness isn't just a feeling of sadness that happens in our mind; it can also affect us physically.
“You feel homesickness in your stomach—it's an unease in which you feel uncomfortable, nervous, stressed because you're in a place or situation that's not familiar,” Joshua Klapow, a professor of public health at the University of Alabama, US, told HuffPost.
According to Klapow, the body reacts physically when it's placed in an unknown situation such as being separated from one's familiar surroundings for a long time.
“It's an evolutionary (进化的) thing that makes us protect ourselves from danger when something is unknown,” he told the HuffPost.
“When we think about home, we know that the sense of unknown...is not happening there, so we want to return.”
So, how can we overcome these physical reactions
Ruth Hardy of the Guardian offered advice for students who are feeling the effects of being away from the safety of home.
“Try and establish routines(常规)quickly. This can make your new environment feel more stable and will hopefully make you feel more settled,” she wrote.
Making friends with others who are in your situation is also a great way to feel less homesick, according to Hardy.
The most important thing to remember, however, is that homesickness is completely normal and is nothing to be ashamed of.
And once it's gone, you're free to enjoy the adventures and challenges of a brand new school year.
9.The study by the UK's National Union of Students is mentioned to ________.
A.show how homesickness causes harm to students
B.prove it's common for students to feel homesick
C.introduce some causes of homesickness
D.show how all young people are troubled by homesickness
10.What can we learn about homesickness
A.It's only a feeling in our mind.
B.It usually disappears after a few weeks.
C.It has a physical influence on our body.
D.It always happens once we visit an unfamiliar place.
11.According to Klapow, why is homesickness helpful to humans
A.It shows people the importance of their family.
B.It drives people to get used to changes.
C.It encourages people to express their feelings.
D.It keeps people away from possible dangers.
12.How does Hardy suggest people deal with homesickness
A.Take part in as many activities as possible.
B.Talk about your problems with your friends.
C.Get into a routine as early as possible.
