课时作业(四) Unit 2 Section Ⅰ Welcome to the unit & Reading
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
It's not easy being a teenager (13至19岁青少年)—nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt, or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you'll still be there for him when he needs you.
Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don't insist he tell you what's on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he'll clam__up. Instead, let him attempt to solve (解决) things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you're always there for him should he seek advice or help. Show respect for your teenager's privacy (隐私). Never read his mail or listen in on personal conversations.
Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family's telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for 15 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least an equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation (节制). Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part time job.
1.The main purpose of the text is to tell parents ________.
A. how to get along with a teenager
B. how to respect a teenager
C. how to understand a teenager
D. how to help a teenager grow up
2.What does the phrase “clam up” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Become excited. B.Show respect.
C.Refuse to talk. D.Seek help.
3.What should parents do in raising a teenager according to the text
A.Not allow him to learn driving or take drugs.
B.Give him advice only when necessary.
C.Let him have his own telephone.
D.Not talk about personal things with him.
B
On my first round the world trip in 2006, I planned everything out in advance. I knew where I was going, how long I would stay, and how I would get there. And then halfway through the trip, I ditched the plan and went with the flow. Over the years, how I plan my travel has changed. Now, I'm a last minute planner and seldom travel with any plan.
Travelling without a plan gives you great flexibility (灵活性). Since nothing is booked far in advance, you can turn to something different when you change your mind or something better comes along. I changed my plan to meet a friend on an island in Thailand and stayed for a month. I wouldn't have had that experience if I had kept to my planned schedule.
However, most new travellers are the opposite—they overly plan their trips. Their whole journey is scheduled. Two days here, three days there. I understand why people do that. When time is short, you want to see as much as possible. You don't want to waste a single second.
Actually, it is better to slow down your pace. Spending more time in one place allows you to get a better feel of the rhythm (节奏) of life. You can visit at a more relaxed pace, see more than just the attractions, and open up your schedule to the happy accidents of travel.
When I first made my travel plan, I tried to include everything in it. Then I realized it was unrealistic, and revised my plan. I listed one or two things I want to see each day and spaced everything out. It's an important lesson to learn. I think the best trip plan is to work out the general path you want to take, book the first few nights of your trip, and let your travels unfold from there. In this way you are never locked into a certain place if your feelings change.

BEIJING (News Agency)—Children in China today spend five times more money than their parents did when they were young.
So what are all these children buying The list is long: iPads, cell phones and jeans are typical items that children “have to” buy. And they will do anything to get them. They ask their parents over and over until they buy them.
But parents also need to take the blame (责备) for spending so much money. They want their children to have the best things. They end up competing with other parents over whether their children have the latest products.
So it's no wonder children find it hard to learn the importance of saving money rather than spending it all the time.
And it's hard to save when companies use advertising (广告) and clever slogans to encourage young people to buy their products. They even encourage children to keep asking their parents for something until they get it.
Today, you don't even need to have money in order to buy something. Banks give out credit cards and loans (贷款) all the time, so people are saving less and less. We are used to carrying lots of money around. And if you don't have much, you can always borrow some.
But this hasn't always been the case. When our grandparents were young, there was very little money and everyone had to save hard for things they bought. They only bought things they needed, not things they just wanted.
The older generation made the wise expression, “Money doesn't grow on trees.” This is as true now as it was 50 years ago. They give money a great deal of value. And we all have a lot to learn from them.
1.The text mainly tells us ________.
A.differences between teenagers and their parents
B.what is popular among children at the moment
C.how to spend money wisely
D.children's high consumption (消费) of products
2.Why are parents to blame for children's spending a lot of money
A.They don't give children positive guidance in consumption.
B.They offer to buy the latest fashions for their children.
C.They always give children too much pocket money.
D.Their consumption habits set a bad example to children.
3.What does the saying “Money doesn't grow on trees.” in the last paragraph seem to tell us
A.The older generation understood how to teach children to save.
B.In the past, people attached more importance to saving money.
C.Money has a great deal of value both in the past and at present.
D.Money is not easily earned and people should be careful when they spend it.

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and pleasure. We use it to learn a new language. We find advice on it. We use it to connect with family and friends. We use it to stay in touch with events we care about. The list goes on and on.
As far as the Internet being a part of our lives,—well, that train has left the station. There is no going back to an Internet free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health It might be, say researchers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high blood pressure (血压) in a young group: teenagers.
The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week online may suffer from high blood pressure, which makes your heart and blood vessels (血管) work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure increases your risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause heart and other diseases.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old, took part in it. 134 of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. And researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers say the study is the first to connect heavy Internet use with high blood pressure.
The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy Bushrow. She said, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life, but it shouldn't ruin us.” Ms. Cassidy Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to stop to have a rest regularly from their computers or smart phones and do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that parents shouldn't let their children use the Internet for more than two hours a day, five days a week.
4.What does the underlined part “that train has left the station” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Life without the Internet is nowhere to be found.
B.The train has stopped at the wrong station.
C.There is something wrong with the station.
D.The train has changed its course.
5.What can we learn from Para. 3 and Para. 4
A.There is no relation between high blood pressure and heavy Internet use.
B.There are more advantages than disadvantages of heavy Internet use.
C.Heavy Internet users will probably have high blood pressure.
D.There is no harm of high blood pressure.
6.Andrea Cassidy Bushrow would agree that ________.
A.teenagers shouldn't use the Internet
B.the Internet will ruin human life in the future
C.smart phones are more harmful than computers
D.regular breaks are necessary when using the Internet
7.What can be used as the best title of the passage
A.Most Teenagers Have High Blood Pressure.
B.How to Prevent Teenagers from the Internet.

Teenage summer camps
We helped on a nature reserve (自然保护区) for a week. We did different things every day, including cutting the reeds (芦苇) by the lake. Every day, we took turns to cook, in teams of five. When it was our team's turn, we made a simple dinner of pasta and salad for everyone. Judging by the fact that there was none left, we didn't do too badly!
—Adam
We stayed with families who had kids of our own age, and because they were on a midterm break they came with us on all the trips. So except when we were actually in a language class, we were spending time with our new friends. It was a great way to practice the language we had been working on in the classroom.
—Oliver
Every morning we had the same breakfast, and then cleaned up the camp. When it was all completely tidy, we could head off for the day. The first time we went into the city, we were put into teams and given lists of things to spot, like statues, squares and other landmarks. With some help from the locals, my team found almost all of the things on our list and came second. We went to different museums and galleries in and around the city every day. It was a great chance to learn about another country and its history.
—Sarah
We stayed in a youth center in the suburbs, and went into the center of town by bus every day. It was a good way to see a bit of the city, and it didn't take long to get to the theater where we had our classes. I loved the atmosphere in the old building, and we could walk around during our breaks and watch rehearsals (排练). We learned a great deal and I'm looking forward to putting it all into practice at my school drama club next term!
—Malika

It's not possible to stay together with loved ones all the time. Sometimes family members have to be far away from each other. During that time, they might face something terrible. Although we know what they are suffering, being far away makes it harder to help and comfort (安慰) loved ones. There is no use worrying a lot about them. Instead, keeping a positive attitude of support is more helpful than getting into worrying about them. I think it is what I can do to help my loved ones.
My daughter has been working full time about 10 hours a day during summer. She has to study hard for a big entrance exam. At first, like most people, I wanted to try to solve the problems and analyse (分析) the situation. Was there a better way of time management Was there a better way of studying for this test However, that was not always helpful. Sometimes, it even gave more pressure to her. Sometimes it might sound like there was something wrong to improve. However, it was just tiring at the end of the day. What would be the kind thing to do in this situation It was hard to read someone's mind. I decided to just chat with her online and send a hug emoji (表情符号) this time. It seemed more suitable than talking about solutions. Giving space can also be an act of help, comfort and kindness.
It is a fun and meaningful experiment to actively think about kind things to do rather than let it happen naturally. I've realized it and I'm grateful for this chance to share online. Give it a try too and you'll enjoy sweetness.
4.What can we learn from the first paragraph

A young Jewish girl begins a diary just as World War Ⅱ is about to break out in Europe. She records the details of her daily life, but more than that. Eventually, the diary comes to a heartbreaking end with the girl shot to death by the Nazis. However, it's not the story of Anne Frank. This is Renia's diary, a journal that has been hidden for years in a safe box. Now it's coming to light with the help of Renia's sister and niece.
For a long time, Elizabeth didn't even know that her older sister Renia had kept a diary as a teenager in Poland. Then suddenly one day in the 50s, Elizabeth got the diary and started to read it. She was totally stunned and couldn't get very far. “It was too painful to read it,” recalled Elizabeth. “I just put it in the basement and didn't think about it.”
Alexandra, Elizabeth's daughter, grew up knowing about the locked diary. As Alexandra got older, she was more interested in it. “If I could read this diary, maybe I'll explore some things from the past,” she thought.
She got the diary from its hiding place. When she read it, Alexandra was shocked. “It's the description of a wonderful girl who showed great courage in terrible times. My aunt's world comes to life as the diary shifts between a teenage girl's daily life and the war.”
Elizabeth and her daughter Alexandra are excited that the diary will be published. “It is a story that needs to be heard now more than ever. We should never repeat the same types of racism (种族主义) and hate that lead to violence,” says Alexandra.
