EW’s Most Anticipated Movies of 2024
2024 has an overwhelming array of exciting cinematic treats in store for moviegoers. Here’s what we can’t wait to watch this year.
Dune: Part Two (March 1, in theaters)
Denis Villeneuve’s sandy sci-fi sequel was one of the biggest projects delayed by last year’s Hollywood strikes. Joining Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya are series newcomers Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Lea Seydoux, and a very bald Austin Butler. And though this second part will finish adapting Frank Herbert’s original novel, Villeneuve already has ideas for how he’ll expand the saga.
Civil War (April 26, in theaters)
Alex Garland directs A24’s most expensive project to date: a sci-fi thriller that sees the United States once again at war with itself. Real-life couple Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons star alongside Cailee Spaeny and Wagner Moura. We don’t know much about the film’s plot so far — its only logline describes it as “a race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge.” The first trailer suggests that 19 states have seceded from the Union.
Inside Out 2 (June 14, in theaters)
2015’s Inside Out is one of the finest and agonizingly beautiful pieces of the modern Pixar era. Now Pixar is returning to Inside Out to see if there’s any other gold to mine from the mind of Riley. The young girl, who we followed on her family’s tumultuous move from the Midwest, is now a teenager in San Francisco and facing a whole new emotion: Anxiety (Maya Hawke). That addition somehow feels super relatable to the current times.
A Quiet Place: Day One (June 28, in theaters)
Hush now. The next movie in the saga of A Quiet Place is almost upon us. While the first two films tracked the Abbott family as they fought to survive a world invaded by vicious alien monsters that hunt through sound, this next one will be centered on new characters played by others. Details are being kept under wraps, though we think it’s fair to assume the movie will be taking us back to the day the monsters first arrived on Earth.

A. Dune: Part Two
B. Civil War

3. What do Dune: Part Two and Civil War have in common
A. Both have blond hair.
B. Both will be released on the same day.
C. Both are directed by the same director.

A kindhearted family put themselves in a risky situation to rescue an aggressive owl that had become trapped in a soccer net. One morning, the Larsons discovered a trapped owl on the football field. They immediately wanted to rescue the poor owl, but they found that the owl was very aggressive. Fearful of the owl’s sharp claws and beak, Dave Larson approached with caution when he discovered the bird in his family’s soccer goal in Oak Creek, Wisconsin.
In the dramatic footage, the distressed owl can be seen tangled in the netting while Dave slowly but surely attempts to cut the bird free. During the proceedings, Dave’s wife, Sue, filmed the rescue, which saw the startled bird snap at Dave on numerous occasions, stretching out its claws every time he got close. Fortunately, the family was able to free the distressed bird, with their son Travis sharing the clip online where they were showered with praise for assisting the animal on September 27.
Sue said: “We were very nervous knowing how strong and sharp his beak was, which he kept snapping to scare us. He also kept stretching his claws out every time we got close to him. We were able to feel a little more at ease when the owl eventually realized we weren’t trying to hurt him, and he seemed to relax and let us cut him free. As soon as he flew away, there was instant relief of the situation. But it was more happiness at knowing he was alright and being able to see him fly and move without injury.”
This beautiful story warms people’s hearts and also tells us that man and nature need to coexist in harmony. When we take care to protect Nature, Nature rewards us generously; when we exploit Nature ruthlessly, it punishes us without mercy. We need to have deep reverence for Nature, respect Nature, follow Nature’s laws and protect Nature, so as to build a homeland of harmonious coexistence between man and Nature.
4. Who uploaded the video of freeing the owl online

C. The owl called the traffic police and the insurance company.
D. The owl didn’t sleep well yesterday morning and was tired.
7 What can be the suitable title for the passage
A. Protecting the Environment Right Now B. Keeping Up with the Larsons
C. Kindhearted Couple Free Aggressive Owl D. A Natural Art Museum In the Larsons’ House
C
In the days between a nighttime fire that consumes a building, and a typhoon (台风) hitting a remote place, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Monster” makes up a story in which the most consequential and mysterious element is what makes the human heart work the way it does. Set in and around a lakeside town school where a mother’s righteous conflict with a new teacher parallels (与……并行) the growing bond between two outsider kids, this beautifully presented work from Kore-eda is a delicate web of compassion and embattlement: three separate views of one stretch of momentous time, spun and respun with care and craft.
Kore-eda has long been Japan’s master of melancholy (忧郁). As a director, he is known for his unique cinematic style. The changing perspective of movie “Monster” is a patient bid for honest understanding, a way to achieve grace. A one-truth movie that’s nevertheless thick with human complexity, it rotates flexibly, in tandem with the sorrow score that marks the great Ryuichi Sakamoto’s last film work. Ultimately, what begins as a case of justifiable anger ends up hiding a heartwarming story of acceptance. We just needed to see what we often don’t see, or don’t allow ourselves to recognize.
Once the focus lands on the touching reality between Minato and Yori, two characters in the movie, however, “Monster” has peeled away the intentions of adults to reveal a relationship between two isolated, imaginative children, who were effortlessly realized by their young portrayers, and what feels like a ground-level origin story of humanism. But also of the misunderstandings arising from it that we’ve already seen morph into the “monster”-ization of others, something that Kore-eda takes pains to explain.
The kids themselves, as if mirroring the movie they’re in, talk excitedly of a “big crunch” coming, when the universe will expand and pop and everything will go backward. Is their fairy-tale inspiration, and the rebirth implied in it, sparked by the actions of the adults around them Who knows But as composer Sakamoto’s farewell piano motive gives merciful bitterness to the closing loop of “Monster,” behavioral mysteries don’t seem so ungraspable, and the truth finally resembles a symbol of hope.
8. What can be inferred about Hirokazu Kore-eda from the passage
A. He hated being in school as a little kid.
B. He is proficient in drawing.
C. He has already made many successful films before.
D. He loves to make science fiction movies.
9. What does the underlined word “portrayers” probably mean
A. Actors.
B. Weather forecasters.
C. Painters.
D. Teachers.
10. What can we know from the third paragraph
A. People have misunderstandings about real monsters.
B. The island is often hit by typhoons.
C. What Kore-eda wants to express is about learning.
D. Both Minato and Yori are lonely children.
11. In which part of a newspaper this article can be found
A. Advertisement.
B. Entertainment.
C. Economy.
D. Weather.

False and misleading information supercharged with cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) that threatens to erode democracy and polarize (极化) society is the top immediate risk to the global economy, the World Economic Forum said in a report Wednesday.
The Global Risks Report was released ahead of the annual elite gathering of CEOs and world leaders in the Swiss ski resort town of Davos and is based on a survey of nearly 1,500 experts, industry leaders and policymakers.
The report listed misinformation and disinformation as the most severe risk over the next two years, highlighting how rapid advances in technology also are creating new problems or making existing ones worse. AI-powered misinformation and disinformation is developing as a risk just as billions of people in many countries, including large economies like the U.S., Britain, Indonesia, India, Mexico and Pakistan, are set to head to the opinion polls this year and next, the report said.
“You can use AI to do deepfakes and to really impact large groups, which really drives misinformation,” said Carolina Klint, a risk management leader at Marsh, whose parent company Marsh McLennan co-authored the report with Zurich Insurance Group. “Societies could become further polarized” as people find it harder to verify facts, she said. Fake information also could be used to fuel questions about the legitimacy of elected governments, “which means that democratic processes could be eroded, and it would also drive societal polarization even further,” Klint said.
The rise of AI brings a host of other risks, she said. It can empower “malicious actors” by making it easier to carry out cyberattacks, such as by automating phishing attempts or creating advanced bad software. With AI, “you don’t need to be the sharpest tool in the shed to be a malicious actor,” Klint said. It can even poison data that is scraped off the internet to train other AI systems, which is “incredibly difficult to reverse” and could result in further embedding biases into AI models, she said.
12. What is the passage mainly about
A. The threat we are facing of artificial intelligence
B. Deepfakes that bring convenience to people’s lives
C. Social division originating from artificial intelligence
D. The key role of the artificial intelligence in astronomy
13. What will happen in U.S. this year and next according to the passage
A. Donald Trump will become the President of the United States.
B. The United States will hold a public opinion poll.
C. The United States is about to erupt into a war.
D. AI will cause a large number of Americans to lose their jobs.
14. What does Carolina Klint say about the impact of AI on democratic processes
A. AI will enhance democratic processes greatly.
B. AI will have no impact on democratic processes.
C. AI could erode democratic processes and drive societal polarization further.
D. AI will improve the legitimacy of elected governments.
15. Which of the following statements is not implied in the text
A. The World Economic Forum considers AI-driven misinformation a serious threat.
B. The Global Risks Report was released specifically for the Davos meeting.
C. AI-powered misinformation can be used to challenge the legitimacy of elected governments.
D. All countries mentioned in the report are set to have elections this year and next.

In our kitchen, there was a wooden table and three chairs — one for Dad, one for Mom, and one for me. In the cellar (地窖), the very last jar of apple jam lay quietly on the shelf, waiting to be turned into an apple pie when Dad came back. Mom sat at one end of the table. I sat in the middle between her and Dad. I tried not to look at Dad’s empty place. Dad had gone to the city to look for work for a long time.
Every night, I lay awake in bed and waited for the train to stop. Waited to hear the creaky (嘎吱作响的) gate Dad’s going to fix when he came home. Waited to hear the sound of his work boots dropping on the step by the kitchen door, and his voice calling, “I’m home!”
Every night, as I lay there, I stared at the window and the curtains Mom made from empty flour sacks (麻布袋).
Every night, Mom came to kiss me good-night — after the train’s gone by. She had been listening, too. “Go to sleep. Your dad will be home soon. Maybe for Thanksgiving.”
Time dragging by, it finally came the day before Thanksgiving. I went to sleep with the sound of train wheels in my head, whispering, “Maybe tomorrow, maybe tomorrow.”
Early the next morning, the smell of coffee woke me. I ran into the kitchen. There he was! Dad lifted me onto his shoulders and pretended to stagger from my weight. “How’s my boy You’ve gotten so big that I can barely lift you up anymore.”
He put me down, and I stared at the two sacks on the table. One said FLOUR — I knew that word. I tried reading the other: S-U-G-A-R. Dad whistled admiringly and winked at me. Mom and I had been practicing my letters most days. I could see that Mom was pleased with me. “I’m going to bake a pie for your dad’s homecoming dinner. Jimmy, bring me that jar of apple jam from the shelf in the cellar.” Mom smiled at me.

C. Economy.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Never mind, boy, accidents happen,” Dad said and wiped my tears.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Possible version 1:
Hearing this, I took the steps two at a time to the cellar. The next second I was in front of the shelf. I stood on tiptoe and took down the jar carefully. I could hear Dad and Mom laughing upstairs and Mom’s hands slapping the dough. Wanting to join them, I hurried up the steps, and my foot caught on the middle one. I put out my hand to steady myself, but I tumbled down. The jar slipped through my fingers and smashed on the floor. The jam we’d been saving and saving flew everywhere. Wrong-footed, I burst into tears and heard Dad’s footsteps closer and closer.
“Never mind, boy, accidents happen,” Dad said and wiped my tears. These words seemed to have magic and gradually I settled down. Through the shirt, I could smell the dust of the train and the city as well as that of Dad’s. How I wished I hadn’t hurried. “Next time I will be more careful,” I thought to myself. Having swiftly dealt with the mess, Dad lifted me onto his shoulder and went back to Mom. “Now out of the kitchen, you two,” Mom said, “I'm going to bake my mama’s sugar pie, without apple jam!” I followed Dad out and helped him fix that old creaking gate until Ma called us in for Thanksgiving dinner.
Possible version 2:
Hearing this, I took the steps two at a time to the cellar. “No problem.” I jumped at the request and rushed downstairs. The jar just stood quietly on the shelf, but it seemed a bit high. I climbed up the chair nearby and extended my arms as long as possible. When I just grasped the jar, I lost my balance and fell down. I couldn’t help crying. What made me sad was not the pain but the jam — now scattered everywhere. There came Dad’s footsteps and Mom’s voice, “Are you hurt ” I shook my head slightly. She helped me up and asked me to go upstairs. With heavy footsteps, I moved slowly and tears welled up in my eyes.
“Never mind, boy, accidents happen,” Dad said and wiped my tears. “But I ruined your homecoming dinner.” Sorrow overwhelmed me and I kept sobbing. “No, my son,” Dad smiled gently, “My homecoming dinner is not about pies, but about you and Mom.” Hearing this, I stopped sobbing, “But what can we eat tonight ” “How about an apple pie without apple jam ” Mom came upstairs and cut in. Dad and I exchanged a glance and nodded. After a while, I found myself sitting in the chair, but this time, I sat in the middle between Dad and Mom.
(We can go without apple jam. Why not make a pie with apple jam )
(…but this time, I sat with Dad on the left and Mom on the right.)
Possible version 3:
Hearing this, I took the steps two at a time to the cellar. “Yes! Madam.” I saluted, acting as if I were a solider. I ran downstairs as fast as my legs could carry me. After a while, I jumped upstairs with the jar in both hands, humming a joyful tune. But after I handed the jar to Mom, things went crazy. Mom was busy slapping the dough and asked me to pass her the sugar. Instead of scooping a bowl of it, I held the sack up. Just at that very moment, the sugar sack slipped away and all the sugar ended up on the mud floor. Realizing I spoiled Dad’s homecoming dinner, I burst into tears.
“Never mind, boy, accidents happen,” Dad said and wiped my tears. “I meant to help,” I whimpered, “but... I should have scooped some of it...” Dad squatted down and brushed the hair out of my eyes. “Next time it will just be fine.” I looked into Dad’s eyes and nodded. Dad lifted me onto his shoulder and turned to Mom, “Dear, can we make a sugar-free apple pie ” Mom, who had been watching us lovingly, replied “Of course!” and began to work on it. On that Thanksgiving evening, beside the wooden table sat three of us, I myself between Mom and Dad. Though sugar-free, the apple pie tasted sweeter than ever before.
