Innovative Ideas by Students
Oxygen / carbon dioxide level indicator
S R-Valava, Aftab English Higher Secondary School
The system can detect levels of oxygen / carbon dioxide in the closed car and open windows when the oxygen level drops or carbon dioxide level rises, thereby preventing accidental deaths of children or pets locked inside the car.
New serving tray (托盘)
Alok Singh, Shah Faiz Public School
This serving tray has a release mechanism that can put cups / glasses on the table along with a coaster (玻璃杯垫) without touching it. Once while serving tea to a guest, Alok spilled (洒出) hot tea over him resulting in some burns to his hands. After this incident he came up with this idea to make serving easy and “stylish”.
Posture (姿势) correcting chair
Kulsoom Rizavi, La Martiniere Girls’ College
With sensors at appropriate places, the chair alarms the user when their sitting posture is wrong. Kulsoom dreamed up this idea after being regularly criticized by her mother for her bad posture. She thought that while it may not be possible to be reminded again and again by someone for sitting wrongly, this task can be done by the chair itself.
Sudden fall detector
Soumya Ranjan Behera, BTTS Upper Primary School.
The wearable device alarms others when the user falls suddenly. It is useful for old people and those suffering from fits, epilepsy (癫痫), etc. It will help keep an electronic eye on one’s loved ones. The idea struck Soumya Ranjan when his grandma suffered an epileptic attack and fell down. He wondered, what if she wasn't around

When I saw the documentary ADHD (多动症): Not Just for Kids, I was in tears after 20 minutes — the stories being told sounded much like my own. I’m in my 40s, I had read everything there was in health and science and I had no idea that the symptoms (症状) I had experienced all of my life were anything but normal. How had I missed this I called the doctor to get assessed. I must have sounded desperate on the phone; they took me right away.
Later, I researched everything I could about ADHD. It became clear that my misunderstanding and ignorance about the disorder had misled me. A million thoughts, a million regrets. Finally, I told myself I couldn’t change the past, but I could share the fact that ADHD can look much different from the super active child practicing back flips (后空翻) off of a chair.
As for me, things went another way around: I was a young girl, quietly sitting at my school desk, pretending to listen to the teacher. Meanwhile, I was watching and drawing the bird that landed in the tree outside. And I was rereading entire chapters of my textbooks and taking extensive notes because I couldn’t remember what I had just read because I was thinking of the bird I had seen earlier.
Later in life, I’d sit at the kitchen table, staring out the window. There’s no telling how long it will take. Thoughts rush in from yesterday, today and tomorrow. I need to make dinner, take the dog for a walk, the kids will be home soon... But I can’t move. I know that I should, but I can’t. Afterward, I berate myself, unable to understand why I didn’t get up, why I wasted so much precious time, so much of my life doing nothing, it seems.
Since being treated, I have an inner calmness that is new to me. Medication doesn’t organize my day; it doesn’t remind me to pick up the kids or walk the dog. However, it allows me to move when I’ve been staring out the window for too long.
4. What did the author learn from the documentary
A. She might have been an ADHD patient.
B. She was wrongly assessed by many doctors.
C. She had never experienced any symptom of ADHD.
D. She was a very problematic child during school years.
5. Why does the author share her early experiences in paragraphs 3-4
A. To offer possible causes of ADHD.
B. To make it clear how ADHD develops
C. To show ADHD has more than one form.
D. To describe ADHD symptoms in children.
6. What does the underlined word “berate” mean in paragraph 4
A. adjust. B. blame. C. push. D. challenge.
7. How has the treatment affected the author
A. She has learned some basic life skills.
B. She has allowed herself more free time.
C. She has become motivated to take action.
D. She has developed more patience with her kids.
【答案】4 A 5. C 6. B 7. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了一位40多岁的女士在看完关于多动症的纪录片后,对自己过去生活的反思和自白。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“When I saw the documentary ADHD (多动症): Not Just for Kids, I was in tears after 20 minutes — the stories being told sounded much like my own.(当我看纪录片《多动症:不只是孩子的》时,我看了20分钟就哭了——里面讲的故事听起来很像我自己的故事)”可知,作者发现纪录片中关于多动症的故事和自己的经历很相似,通过纪录片她发现自己可能是多动症患者。故选A项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。第二段中“Finally, I told myself I couldn’t change the past, but I could share the fact that ADHD can look much different from the super active child practicing back flips (后空翻) off of a chair.(最后,我告诉自己,我无法改变过去,但我可以分享这样一个事实:多动症与超级活跃的孩子在椅子上练习后空翻有很大的不同)”作者提出自己对多动症的认知:多动症与超级活跃的孩子在椅子上练习后空翻有很大的不同。第三段中“As for me, things went another way around: I was a young girl, quietly sitting at my school desk, pretending to listen to the teacher...(对我来说,情况正好相反:我是一个小女孩,静静地坐在课桌前,假装在听老师讲课……)”和第四段中“Later in life, I’d sit at the kitchen table, staring out the window. There’s no telling how long it will take. Thoughts rush in from yesterday, today and tomorrow... (后来,我坐在厨房的桌子旁,凝视着窗外。不知道要花多长时间。思绪从昨天、今天和明天涌来……)”用自己的经历来说明多动症除了“超级活跃”外,还有其它形式。所以作者在第3、4段中分享了她早期的经历是为了表明多动症不止一种形式。故选C项。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据上文“I need to make dinner, take the dog for a walk, the kids will be home soon... But I can’t move. I know that I should, but I can’t.(我要做晚饭,遛狗,孩子们很快就会回家……但是我动不了。我知道我应该这么做,但我做不到)”可知,在生活中,作者总是无法去做自己想做的事情,身体不受自己控制。结合划线词所在句“Afterward, I berate myself, unable to understand why I didn’t get up, why I wasted so much precious time, so much of my life doing nothing, it seems.(后来,我berate自己,不明白为什么我没有起床,为什么我浪费了这么多宝贵的时间,为什么我的生命中这么多的时间似乎什么都没做)”中“unable to understand why I didn’t get up, why I wasted so much precious time, so much of my life doing nothing”可推知,作者对于自己的这种无能充满自责。故berate与blame意思相近。故选B项。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Since being treated, I have an inner calmness that is new to me. Medication doesn’t organize my day; it doesn’t remind me to pick up the kids or walk the dog. However, it allows me to move when I’ve been staring out the window for too long.(自从接受治疗以来,我内心的平静对我来说是前所未有的。药物不能安排我的一天;它不会提醒我去接孩子或遛狗。然而,当我盯着窗外看太久的时候,它可以让我动起来)”可知,治疗让作者有了采取行动的动力。故选C项。

Based on bone and tooth records, mammoths(猛犸象)were thought to have gone extinct about 12,000 years ago. But a new genetic sampling technique suggests the great beasts may have stuck around a lot longer. The story is in the soil.
Bones are rich sources of prehistoric genetic information, but not the only ones; items ranging from shed Ice Age skin cells to pine needles can contribute to the genetic record stored in dirt. Paleogeneticists(古遗传学家)have been analyzing "environmental DNA" from soil for a long time, but getting rid of non-DNA material without destroying these fragile clues is daunting(使人气馁的).
"Environmental samples contain a huge range of other chemical substances that are hard to separate from the DNA," says McMaster University geneticist Tyler Murchie. "We can't afford to lose whatever we can get."
In the new approach, soil samples are got and then broken into smaller portions, stirred and run through a "cold spin method" to separate as much DNA as possible. The DNA is then compared against an existing genetic library to detect species matches.
The method is limited because researchers using it need to know what DNA to look for. If a saber-toothed cat species is not already in the genetic library, the analysis cannot detect that animal. For known species, however, the process may yield exciting information. In their study, the researchers detected about 2,100 kinds of plants and 180 animals.
Not yet published results from other field sites are yielding similar results, Murchie says, and future fossil discoveries could strengthen the case. "We can use this approach to identify species in places and times we never knew they existed," he adds.
8. Why does the author mention "mammoths" in Paragraph 1
A. To present a fact. B. To show us an extinct animal.
C. To correct a mistake. D. To introduce the topic of the passage.
9. Which word can best describe the work of getting rid of non-DNA material
A. Challenging. B. Interesting.
C. Boring. D. Satisfying.
10. What is the disadvantage of the new method
A. It is very slow.
B. It can't detect unknown animals.
C. It is not very accurate.
D. It can only be carried out in the genetic library.
11. What is the text
A. A news report. B. A short story.
C. A book review. D. A research report.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. D
【解析】
【分析】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了科学家们通过研究泥土中动植物的DNA信息从而对它们获得更多的了解。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第一段“But a new genetic sampling technique suggests the great beasts may have stuck around a lot longer. The story is in the soil.”(但一项新的基因取样技术表明,这种巨兽可能存在的时间更长。故事在土壤里。)以及第二段的“Paleogeneticists(古遗传学家)have been analyzing "environmental DNA" from soil for a long time, but getting rid of non-DNA material without destroying these fragile clues is daunting(使人气馁的).( 古遗传学家长期以来一直在从土壤中分析“环境DNA”,但在不破坏这些脆弱线索的情况下去除非DNA物质是令人气馁的)”可知作者谈及猛犸象是为了引出文章的主题,科学家对DNA的研究。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。由文章二段“…getting rid of non-DNA material without destroying these fragile clues is daunting”(在不破坏这些脆弱线索的情况下去除非DNA物质是令人气馁的。)和第三段“Environmental samples contain a huge range of other chemical substances that are hard to separate from the DNA…”(环境样本中含有大量其他化学物质,很难从DNA中分离出来)可知,从泥土中提取出有用的DNA信息是很困难,是很有挑战性的一项工作。故选A。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第五段“The method is limited because researchers using it need to know what DNA to look for. If a saber-toothed cat species is not already in the genetic library, the analysis cannot detect that animal.”(这种方法是有限的,因为使用它的研究人员需要知道要寻找什么DNA。例如,如果一种剑齿虎物种还没有出现在基因库中,分析就无法检测到这种动物。)可知,这个新方法的局限是:只能检测到已知物种,不能检测到未知物种。故选B。
11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段的“Bones are rich sources of prehistoric genetic information, but not the only ones; items ranging from shed Ice Age skin cells to pine needles can contribute to the genetic record stored in dirt.(骨骼是史前遗传信息的丰富来源,但不是唯一的来源;从脱落的冰河时代的皮肤细胞到松针,这些物品都可以促成储存在泥土中的基因记录)”以及下文的介绍可知,本文介绍了科学家们通过研究泥土中动植物的DNA信息从而获得对他们更多的了解。据此可知本文是一篇研究报告。故选D。

Adults who had close contact with natural spaces during their childhood could have a better mental health than those who had less contact, according to a new study by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (IS Global),an institution supported by “la Calxa,” involving four European cities—Spain, the Netherlands, Lithuania and the UK.
The all-adult study gave 3,600 participants a questionnaire on how frequently they used e natural spaces during childhood — for example, playing in a garden, riding a bike at the park or hiking in a forest. They were also asked about the importance they put on using such places.
Volunteers were then given a psychological test, which included a variety of questionnaires and problem-solving activities, to analyze their nervousness and feelings of depression within a four-week period.
The results consistently showed that the people who were more exposed (暴露的) to natural spaces had higher mental health scores compared to those with lower childhood exposure — as did those who attached higher importance to using green spaces.
The study’s coordinator (协调员), Wilma Zijlema, wrote that the results “show the importance of childhood exposure to natural spaces for the development of a nature-appreciating attitude and a healthy psychological state in adulthood”. She also stressed the importance of “recognizing the meaning of growing up in environments with limited opportunities for exposure to nature”.
According to the study, 73 percent of Europe’s population only has limited access (接触机会) to natural spaces. Mark Nieuwenhuijsen, director of IS Global’s Urban Planning, said that “Many children in Europe lead an indoors lifestyle, so it would be desirable to make natural outdoor environments available, attractive and safe for them to play in. We make a call on policymakers to improve the availability of natural spaces for children and green school yards.”
While this study was based in Europe, a lack of green space can affect anyone, anywhere. So remember to make time to immerse yourself in nature, as your mental health is just as important as the physical one.
12. What can we learn about the study according to Paragraph one
A. It was carried out only in four European cities.
B. It is supported by all the adults who are physically healthy.
C. It indicates the more contact with nature, the happier one’s childhood will be.
D. It shows adulthood mental health could be related to childhood exposure to nature.
13. What do we know about the study
A. The participants were from all over the world.
B. The participants included both children and adults.
C. It focused on the participants’ physical health state.
D. It consisted of a questionnaire and a psychological test.
14. What do Paragraphs 5-6 mainly talk about
A. The process of the study. B. The method of the study.
C. The value of the study. D. The difficulties of the study.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title of the passage
A. Importance of Physical Health. B. Benefits of Natural Green Spaces.
C. Values of Psychological examinations. D. Problems of Europe’s Young Population.
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. C 15. B

Cory had a quarrel with his mother for his study and left home in the morning. He had been wandering on the streets for almost a whole day, feeling so depressed and hopeless.
It was freezing cold at dusk on such a winter day. And the sky was dark. He was walking down an empty street where there were no passers-by, because people must have been at home for warmth. Cory was walking to a crossroad when suddenly he came across a little boy stuck in the middle of the road alone like him.
Cory had meant to turn a blind eye to him at first. But the boy’s situation worried him. He approached the boy, asking, “Hey! Why are you alone here Where is your mother ” “I want to find my mama and papa. Please take me home,” the boy replied, bursting into tears. Cory led him away from the crossroad. Then, he asked worriedly, “How did you come here What’s your name ”
“I’m Simon. I was playing with my dog. The dog ran away, and I ran after him for a long distance. But when I wanted to go back home, I lost my way,” cried the boy. Feeling pity for the boy, Cory made up his mind to help the boy. He couldn’t have the little boy staying here alone.
Attempting to look for his home, Cory took the little boy to different neighborhoods. But things didn’t go that smoothly as he had expected. It was getting darker and darker, and Cory thought he had to help Simon find his home. He knocked on every door, but without luck. Worn out and starving, he realized Simon must be very hungry. He offered him the chocolate he had bought with his rest money. It began to snow and he removed his coat and put it around Simon. Luckily, there was still a bakery store with the door open. He borrowed a phone to call the police station.

【答案】One possible version:
After a while, a police car pulled up and Cory waved to it with excitement. Two policemen came out of the police car and Cory couldn’t wait to explain what had happened to Simon. Then, the policemen checked for any missing person’s report without any delay. Meanwhile, they drove the two of them around the nearby neighborhood one by one to search for Simon’s home. Finally, they successfully contacted the little boy’s parents. Cory was more than glad to see Simon s reunion with his parents.
Seeing the reunion of Simon and his parents, Cory was deeply touched. He thought of his own parents, the warm home and his mother’s delicious supper. He thought his parents must have been as worried as Simon’s and they must have been anxiously searching everywhere for their son right now. The more he thought about it, the more guilty he felt for what he had done to his mother. All his anger died away in an instant and he rushed in the direction of his home.

6 What does the underlined word “berate” mean in paragraph 4
A. adjust. B. blame. C. push. D. challenge.
7. How has the treatment affected the author
A. She has learned some basic life skills.
B. She has allowed herself more free time.
C. She has become motivated to take action.
D. She has developed more patience with her kids.
