There is no better way to immerse yourself in Saskatchewan’s diverse landscapes than by hitting one of the beautiful hiking trails. Here are three hikes to discover.
Gem Lakes Narrow Hills Provincial Park
The Gem Lakes are located in the Narrow Hills Provincial Park of Saskatchewan. Their waters are fed by springs from the surrounding hills, reflecting the sun and creating gem-like colors. There is a 5-kilometre hiking trail that loops around the tiny lakes. You can bring a tent and spend the night in the campground. The lakes are stocked with fish and many people bring their kayaks to spend the day floating around in the tranquility of the water trying to catch a delicious meal.
Nut Point Trail, Lac La Ronge Provincial Park
Located on a peninsula that extends to the massive Lac La Ronge lake is the Nut Point trail, a 30-kilometre backcountry hike along the spine of billion year old rock. The hiking trail ends with a beautiful spot overlooking the historic Lac La Ronge Lake. Set up your tent on the rocks in order to enjoy the sounds of the water. If you’re lucky, the Northern Lights will explode overhead in night sky. Make sure you bring your bathing suit for a relaxing dip in the cool waters!
Sand Dunes (沙丘) Nature Trail, Douglas Provincial Park
Have you ever wanted to walk on a rolling sand dune There are two places for you. The first are the famous Athabasca Sand Dunes, the world’s most northerly active sand dunes. The second are the Great Sandhills, a 1, 900-square-kilometre protected area. The hike in Douglas Provincial Park sand dunes is a time machine of geological history. Don’t ever tell Angela Alvarez it’s too late for dreams to come true. The old woman just brought home a Latin Grammy for best new artist, becoming the musical award show’s eldest winner ever.
The Cuban American musician’s crowning moment came after decades of writing songs but performing them only for friends and family. Until she was 90 years old, she went to the Avalon and gave her first concert.
“I loved music very much,” Alvarez says. “When I was a child, I had two aunts that played the piano and taught me how to sing. Whenever there was a family gathering, I was the artist; they made dresses for me and I always liked to perform.” Music was always there for her, as it helped her cope with the ups and downs of life: from love and motherhood, to her relentless efforts to reunite her family and the eventual loss of her beloved husband and, years later, of her only daughter, both to cancer.
Listening to many of these songs while growing up was especially influential on her grandson Carlos José Alvarez, a professional composer and producer based in Los Angeles who owes his love of music largely to his Nana, as her grandchildren called her. As Angela was getting on in years without ever recording any of her work, he had an inspiration that made him fly quickly to Louisiana to document each and every one of her songs, for “the legacy of our family”.
“I hope this entire project inspires young people to sit down and talk to their elders. Ask them questions. Ask them about the dreams they had once upon a time. They will be surprised at what they will find” Carlos concludes. “If we don’t ask them, they won’t tell us, and their wisdom and dreams will leave with them.”
“There are people who give up, but I did not give up, and I always fought,” Angela said during her wining speech. “I promise you that it’s never too late.”
4. What can we learn about Angela’s experiences
A. Angela’s songs are all about family love.
B. Music provides strong support for her life.
C. Angela becomes the most successful musician.
D. Angela is always dreaming of giving a concert.
5. How did Angela influence her grandson Carlos
A. She taught Carlos how to compose music.
B. She helped Carlos record the songs in studio.
C. Her songs fueled Carlos’ passion for music.
D. Her success inspired Carlos to help the elders.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Angela
A. Inspiring and determined. B. Generous and adorable.
C. Efficient and ambitious. D. Adventurous and creative.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing this article
A. To show the ups and downs of Angel’s life.
B. To encourage the elder to pursue their dreams.
C. To provide a history of the Latin Grammy Awards.
D. To highlight Angela’s achievements as an elder musician.
C
“I never know what to say around other people. Whenever I am in a group of people, I feel like everyone knows what to say and I have no idea. When I do try to join in or answer a question, I get anxious. My heart starts thumping. This happens at parties or meetings with parent groups, but I feel judged—as if I were being interviewed for a job. I don’t enjoy these experiences, so I routinely avoid them. People think I am a loner. Maybe I am ”
Individuals experiencing this type of social discomfort are often polite and considerate. They do not interrupt others and they say please and thank you when it is appropriate to do so. They often avoid eye contact, because it makes them feel judged. They feel like others can see how uncomfortable they are. Individuals experiencing these symptoms are often very intelligent, but their anxiety prevents them from being able to demonstrate this in front of others.
Fitting into most groups of people requires conformity (从众). You need to be interested in the topics that others in the group are interested in and think and talk about them the way they do. Becoming an essential part of these groups requires that you sacrifice some of your individuality in order to adapt your perspectives, values, and styles to fit in.
Some individuals are chameleon-like in that they naturally pick up the patterns of relating to different groups and change themselves accordingly. They accommodate themselves to the group. They leave their individuality behind. For some people, this is automatic and they don’t even register that they are changing themselves to fit into groups. However, if you are one of those people who feels disconnected in most social group settings, it may be because your personality refuses conformity. You have difficulty liking what other people like and you stop changing the way you think in order to feel part of a group. Perhaps it’s better for you to stay true to yourself. Maybe you are better off
8. What is the function of paragraph 1
A. To introduce hard experience of social anxiety.
B. To explain why some people avoid eye contact.
C. To compare different types of social groups.
D. To recommend ways to go for job interviews.
9. What would people do when experiencing social discomfort
A. They are mindful of proper social manners.
B. They are eager to stop others judging them.
C. They tend to observe what others are doing.
D. They try to demonstrate their intelligence.
10. How can we possibly fit into most groups
A. By improving the communication skills.
B. By sharing interest and adapting to others.
C. By showing respect and kindness to others.
D. By practicing active listening and speaking
11. What would the author agree with according to the last paragraph
A. We should abandon our personality to fit in.
B. Not changing ourselves is also a good choice.
C. Refusing help will turn you away from friends.
D. Following suit is a requirement in the society.

Despite heavy illegal hunting of rhinos, South Africa’s Kruger National Park is still a natural paradise. One of the largest remaining lion populations in Africa lives there. Yet there is something the local animals fear even more than the big cats.
Liana Zanette of Western University in Ontario and her colleagues were able to show that animals react most strongly to human voices and flee in response. For their experiment, the team placed camera traps and loudspeakers at water holes in the national park, which allowed the researchers to influence and record the behavior of a total of 19 mammal species. They played the animals sounds of normal conversations of humans in four South African languages, dogs barking, gunshots and lion sounds.
The study group found that animals were twice as likely to flee and yacated an area faster when they heard human voices than when they heard lions or gunshots. This was true for 95 percent of the animal species observed, including giraffes, leopards, hyenas, zebras, kudu, warthogs, impalas and rhinos. Only elephants were significantly more likely to run from lions than from humans.
The same was true of the time that animals spent at water holes: they usually stayed longer when lion sounds were played to them than when human voices were heard. Wild dogs, leopards and buffalo were the only animals who stayed at water holes longer when they heard humans, and the difference was not statistically significant for these species. “There is a notion that animals get used to humans when they are not being hunted. But we’ve shown that’s not the case,” Clinchy says. “Fear of humans is deeply rooted and common, so we need to seriously address it for conservation reasons.”
The team is now investigating whether its customized sound systems can be used to help endangered species, such as the southern white rhino, away from known poaching(偷猎) areas in South Africa. Initial tests of keeping rhinos away from such areas through the use of human voices have been successful.
12. What can we know about South Africa’s Kruger National Park
A. Rhinos are effectively protected in the park.
B. Lions are the biggest threat for local animals.
C. Human voices cause fear in the local wildlife.
D. It is a natural paradise without illegal hunting.
13. What does the underlined word “vacated” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Occupied. B. Left. C. Encountered. D. Filled.
14. What did researchers find about animals’ reaction to different sounds
A. Elephants are more afraid of humans than lions.
B. Giraffes react most strongly to lions or gunshots.
C. Rhinos were more likely to run from lions than gunshots
D. Wild dogs stayed at water holes longer when hearing humans
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Human Voices: a surprising deep-rooted fear in wildlife
B. Lions: the primary source of threat for the local animals
C. Lion Sounds: the potential use for wildlife protection
D. Humans: the impact on decreasing rhino population

Over the past three decades, an 81-year-old Chinese man has been operating a small zoo. The zoo in Enshi, Hubei Province, is called the “world’s loneliest zoo” because few people visit it. Most of the animals there are unhealthy.
Luo Yingjiu began keeping animals at home in the 1980s. After seeing wild animals kept in cages for sale at a market, Luo bought them and took them home to give them medical treatment. He released (释放) those able to live on their own into the wild and continued to raise those that could not live independently. There were so many animals in his house that the local government suggested he open a zoo. With the government’s financial aid, the zoo was opened in 1989, the only one in the city at that time. During its peak time, the zoo had some big animals, including a tiger and a lion. The business later became worse because visitors were not interested in the zoo’s “old, weak, sick and disabled” animals.
Using his pension (退休金) to operate the zoo, Mr. Luo refused to listen to other people’s advice to close it. “It is not just a zoo; it provides the habitat for the animals,” he explained. “If the zoo is closed, where can these animals go They cannot even survive in the wild.”
As he operates the zoo, he keeps on rescuing animals. A black bear with one paw injured was saved 17 years ago. A dog named Dianzi was saved when its former owner planned to abandon (遗弃) it. A monkey that has been at the zoo for nearly 30 years is almost blind because of camera flashes from visitors who took photos. For those animals that died, Luo buried them on the nearby mountain.
Luo said he remembers every animal’s name. “Animals and humans are born equal,”he said. “We should respect their right to survive.”

The Hadza hunter-gatherers of Tanzania live a life that has not changed much over ten thousand years. They have no crops, no house animals, no permanent shelters. In spite of long exposure to agriculturalist groups around them, the Hadza have maintained their lifestyle.
The story of the spread of agriculture is the story of growing population density (密度). Villages formed, then cities, then nations. Agriculture’s rise, however, came with a price. It introduced infectious diseases, social inequality, occasional famines (饥荒) and war. Professor Jared Diamond of UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) has called the adoption of agriculture “the worst mistake in human history”— a mistake from which we have never recovered.
Looking at the Hadza, you can see why he came to this conclusion. They do not engage in warfare. They do not live densely (稠密地) enough to be threatened by an infectious outbreak. They have no known history of famine (饥荒). The Hadza diet is more stable (稳定 的) and varied than that of most of the world’s citizens. They live almost entirely free of possessions. They enjoy an extraordinary amount of leisure time, “working” — actively pursuing food — only four to six hours a day.
The chief reason the Hadza have been able to maintain their lifestyle so long is that their homeland is not an inviting place. Recently, however, population growth has brought a flood of people into Hadza lands. The region has generally been viewed by outsiders as unused, a Place in need of development. The Hadza, who by nature are not a combative (好战的) people, have almost always moved away instead of fighting.
There are many things to envy about the Hadza, mostly what free spirits they appear to be. Free from schedules, jobs, bosses, bills, traffic, taxes, laws, social duties and money. But who of us could live like them It’s incredibly risky. Medical help is far away. One bad fall from a tree, one bite from a snake, and you’re dead. The fact is that it’s too late for us to go back to the Hadza lifestyle. Of greater concern is that soon it may be impossible for them to maintain theirs.
28. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Agriculture’s rise. B. The growth of population.
C. The formation of village. D. The appearance of a city.
29. What’s the characteristic of the Hadza
A. They are always busy in all seasons
B. They like fighting with the other nations
C. They are often in hunger because of fight
D. They are always leading a free life without fight.
30. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. It’s convenient for the people of Hadza to get medical care.
B. It’s worth visiting the beautiful scenery of the Hadza.
C. Visitors can be welcomed warmly by the people of the Hadza.
D. The author is worried about the current situation of the Hadza.
31 Which is the best title for the text
A. Agriculture of the Hadza B. The Unique Hadza Lifestyle
C. The Attractive Diet of the Hadza D. The Medical Care of the Hadza
D
Imagine coming home after a long day at work and being welcomed by a loving pet who greets you warmly. Better yet, imagine a pet that never has to be fed and never has to use the bathroom.
Robopest provide many of the perks of a real pet without all of the responsibility. These furry (毛的) robofriends are more advanced and lifelike than remote-controlled toy dogs. Many feature realistic fur for an enjoyable petting experience and make sounds and small, natural movements.
Paro is one of the most popular companion robots. It is a robotic baby harp seal (鞍背海豹) with cute black eyes and a pacifier (安抚奶嘴) that doubles as its charger. Created by Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Paro is more than a stuffed animal. The little seal is packed with five kinds of sensors: touch, light, audio, temperature and posture. Plus, Paro is super intelligent; it can learn to behave in a way that the user prefers. According to the Paro website, “If you stroke (抚摸) it every time you touch it, Paro will remember your previous action and try to repeat that action to be stroked.”
While animal-assisted therapy (疗法) and the benefits of pets have been analysed in numerous scientific studies, real animals may not always be the appropriate choice for an older adult. Animals can be a lot of work; they can spread some diseases to humans and they may not always be on their best behaviour. That is where robotic pets come into play. In a study on Paro’s effect on hospital/nursing home residents, researchers found that those who interacted with Paro were less lonely over the period of the trial.
Robot pets are becoming a common fixture in assisted living communities and, as years go by, these robopets will become more advanced at copying real animal behaviours. While some believe that robot pets can’t compete with real animals, the companionship they provide to older adults cannot be denied.
32. What does the underlined word “perks” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Solutions. B. Challenges. C. Chances. D. Advantages.
33. How smart is Paro
A. It can work without electricity. B. It can touch its user.
C. It can repeat its user’s words. D. It can adapt its actions to its user.
34 What is paragraph 4 mainly intended to explain
A. What researchers have found about diseases.
B. Why robotic pets are suitable for people.
C. What dangers animals can bring to humans.
D. Why hospitals apply animal-assisted therapy.
35. What is the author’s attitude to the future of robot pets
A. Disapproving. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Unclear.
