When I first moved to China in 1998, I thought I would impress my class by using some Chinese in my speech about American weddings (婚礼). I told them everyone brings a gift to the wedding for the couple. As soon as I said this, all of the students looked surprised. I knew I had said something wrong. I realized that instead of telling them that everybody brings gifts to the hun li for the couple, I had said people bring gifts for them at the li hun!
I get laughs from some of my students because I often make mistakes and my Chinese sounds strange at times. But I tell them that sometimes their English is really strange too.
One asks, “What are you like to do in your free time?” And the other answers, “I very like basketball.” I find that even good English speakers make such mistakes. The second is by far the most common mistake I have heard among Chinese English speakers. It is a result of first thinking in Chinese and then translating each word in the sentence into English. This, of course, makes some Chinese people's English sound strange.
“We should get off the car here,” a student told me. My school had asked two students to show me around the city by taxi. In English countries, we “get off” a bike, bus, or train. However, when we leave a car, we say “get out of the car”. Perhaps the student had learned “get off” means xia in Chinese and he thought the phrase (短语) could be followed by any means of transportation. To avoid such mistakes, you should take collocations (搭配) seriously. Only learning vocabulary and grammar is not enough.
Some of my students sound more like a book or machine than a human. Perhaps they have gotten used to depending on books. You can also read English books out loud or use a CD, but you need the real thing. If you have a chance to hear a native speaker from an English speaking country, practice repeating what you hear. They can teach you how to have a conversation.

English is full of funny expressions that don't always make sense. Idioms are phrases and sentences that do not mean exactly what they say. Even if you know the meaning of each word, you may not understand the idiom because you don't understand the culture behind it. Here are some English idioms based on animals.
When children jump around and act silly, their parents may tell them to stop “monkeying around”. To “monkey around” means to do things that are not useful or serious, or to simply waste time.
Many American families have and love pet dogs. But for some unknown reason, Americans use “dog” in a phrase that means to feel unwell. If you are “as sick as a dog”, you're really, really sick.
Sometimes you may also hear cats mentioned in conversations, “I told you to keep that secret, but you have just ‘let the cat out of the bag’! ” You probably guessed it—that idiom means to reveal a secret or tell facts that were previously unknown.
Dogs and cats don't always get along, but they appear side by side in a commonly used idiom. When it rains heavily, people might say it's “raining cats and dogs”.
Heavy rain often ruins people's plans for outdoor activities. But on a lovely day, you can have a picnic. If a swarm (一群) of tiny bugs love your food and start to hover (盘旋) around you, it would be really annoying. That experience perfectly explains why people often tell someone who keeps bothering them to “stop bugging me”.
Idioms are very common in both spoken and written English. If you want to have a better understanding of English, you have to learn idioms.

People often ask which is the most difficult language to learn, and it is not easy to answer because there are many things to take into consideration (考虑). Firstly, in a first language the differences are unimportant as people learn their mother tongue naturally, so the question of how hard a language is to learn is only relevant in terms of learning a second language.

However, for Japanese speakers, who already use Chinese characters in their own language, learning writing will be less difficult than for speakers of languages using the Roman alphabet (字母).
Some people seem to learn languages easily, while others find it very difficult. Teachers and the circumstances (环境) in which the language is learned also play an important role, as well as each learner's purpose for learning. If people learn a language because they need to use it in work, they often learn it faster than people studying a language that has no direct use in their day to day life.
No language is easy to learn well, though languages which are related to our first language are easier. Learning a completely different writing system is a huge challenge, but that does not necessarily make a language more difficult than another. In the end, it is impossible to say that there is one language that is the most difficult language in the world.

The year was 1955, and the Wappen von Hamburg had just started its life, transporting tourists from Hamburg, Germany to the island of Helgoland in the North Sea. So, how did that ship end up, sixty years later, on a river near Stockton, California

Willson renamed the boat Aurora. When he sprang the news of his buying the ship on his girlfriend, Jin Li, she said she didn't have the courage to look inside the ship:“It was a disaster. You don't know what's going to be behind a door or in a room.”
But together, slowly, they got to restore (修复) the ship, with some parts, now looking good.
Aurora is one of the only remaining midcentury ships. The rest either sank (沉没) or were turned into new forms of existence. Maritime historian and collector Peter Knego said of Aurora, “You look at her. She's a beautiful creation. And she's so lucky to still be around. Every ship of her generation is pretty much gone.”
Thanks to a volunteer team and, now, a popular YouTube channel, Willson's hope is to turn the ship into a hotel, or maybe even a museum.
“Now I feel the boat is bringing a lot of people together. It brought me and Chris even closer together, and is attracting local people and people from social media,” Li said. “And I think, maybe, it isn't a bad idea that a small guy has a big dream.”

When a language disappears, we lose the culture and history of a people. We also lose the knowledge of the people who speak the language. In a famous case in northern Australia, doctors couldn't find a cure (疗法) for a skin problem that the local people developed. When they asked a native woman, she used her own language to describe a plant which could cure the disease. There are many other examples of why disappearing languages are important. Speakers of the Kallawaya language in Bolivia have got a wide vocabulary of medicinal plants in their part of the rainforest which doctors in the modern world have never heard of, and speakers of the Yupik language of Alaska have got ninety nine words for ice, which shows that they've got a unique understanding of their world. Our planet would lose that understanding if these languages disappeared.
But we don't have to lose as many languages as some people think. Using modern technology can save small languages, and we mustn't lose the culture, history and knowledge that these languages contain (包含).
