Winter Solstice Celebrations From Around the World
The winter solstice (冬至), the longest night of the year, falls on December 21 or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 20 or 21 in the Southern. Since ancient times, people all over the world have celebrated this important astronomical occurrence in different ways. Here are some solstice traditions both new and old to help light your way to longer days.

Even Antarctica gets its share of solstice celebration, thanks to the researchers staying there over the long, dangerously cold season. While those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are enjoying the most daylight hours, in the Southern Hemisphere they are celebrating Midwinter. Festivities include special meals, films, and sometimes even handmade gifts.

Recently, video clips of Zhang Jianna, a city cleaner from Chaoyang Sanitation (环境卫生), have gone viral online.
The 49-year-old Zhang is from a village in Hebei province. With only a high school diploma, she had previously worked as a restaurant server and a store seller. In 2012, she took on the role of a sanitation worker in the embassy area of Sanlitun in Beijing’s Chaoyang District. One morning, a foreigner came to her and spoke a long string of unfamiliar words to her. Zhang didn’t know how to react. The special experience deeply moved Zhang and she was determined (下定决心) to learn English.
“I just want to help whenever someone is in need,” said Zhang. Without a teacher, she began learning English from her children’s textbooks, starting with basic words and phrases. With no fixed study hours, she used every free moment. While others rested, she memorized vocabulary and practiced speaking. Upon arriving home after work, she would note down new knowledge points and review them until thoroughly understood.
“Learning English at 40, I would easily forget the words I learned the previous day,” Zhang said. However, she persisted (坚持), reviewing words at night and then repeating them one more time the next day morning. She also downloaded over a dozen English learning apps on her computer and phone. “Learn step by step, learn every day.” Zhang said. To date, she has collected a vocabulary of around 3,000 English words, enabling her to talk fluently with foreigners. “Growing up without a college education, I sometimes feared being looked down upon. But every time I help a stranger in English, I feel incredibly achievable.”
“To serve others makes me happy and it’s where I prove my self-worth,” said Zhang. “After retirement, I also want to introduce my hometown in English and develop local tourism.”
4. What do we know about Zhang Jianna from paragraph 2
A. She graduated from a university.
B. She understood the foreigner’s words.
C. She wants to be an English teacher.
D. She works as a sanitation worker.
5. For what reason can Zhang learn English well
A. A college education. B. A decade-long persistence.
C. A high school diploma. D. A confident English teacher.
6. What can we learn from the underlined sentence in the text
A. Persistence is key to learning English.
B. Devote any possible moment to learning.
C. Growing up in a village is looked down upon.
D. Her inspiring journey leads to a new goal.
7. Which of the following word can best describe Zhang
A. Adventurous. B. Generous. C. Curious. D. Determined.

Parkinson’s is a progressive brain disease which leads to shaky hands and slow movement, and there is no cure. Tai Chi, a traditional Chinese martial art that combines (结合) slow, gentle movements with deep breathing and relaxation, may be an effective means of reducing the suffering. Recently, the researchers say that those who practised the martial art twice a week had fewer complications (并发症) and better quality of life than those who didn’t. Experts say the findings back up previous studies on the benefits of exercise for those with Parkinson’s.
The study, from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, monitored the health of hundreds of Parkinson’s patients for up to five years. One group of 147 people practised regular Tai Chi while another group of 187 did not. The researchers found that the disease progressed more slowly in the Tai Chi group on measurements of symptoms (症状), movement and balance. This group also saw fewer falls, less back pain and dizziness, with memory and concentration problems also lower than in the other group. At the same time, sleep and quality of life continuously improved.
Prof. Alastair Noyce, professor in neurology and neuroepidemiology at Queen Mary University of London, called it “an important study”—the positive effects on aspects of motor (运动的) and non-motor functions are impressive — but said there were limitations in its design, and more tests were needed.
“We already recommend Tai Chi, as well as other forms of exercise, but understanding which forms of exercise are most beneficial is an important goal to improve the long-term management of patients,” he said.
8. Why was the study conducted
A. To find a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
B. To improve the sleep quality of Parkinson’s patients.
C. To remove the misunderstanding of the previous studies.
D. To research the benefits of Tai Chi for those with Parkinson’s.
9. Which of the following is not the researchers’ finding
A. Concentration problem was lower in the Tai Chi group.
B. The disease progressed more slowly in the Tai Chi group.
C. Patients in the non-Tai Chi group continuously fell down.
D. Back pain and dizziness were relieved in the Tai Chi group.
10. What can we learn from Prof. Alastair Noyce’s words
A. Tai Chi should be given more preference.
B. Finding the most beneficial exercise is of importance.
C. It is unnecessary to do more related studies.
D. Improve the long-term management of patients is impossible.
11. What is Prof. Alastair Noyce’s attitude towards the study
A. Confused. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Worried.
D
Traditionally, the number of meaningful social relationships one can maintain is around 150. This concept finds its roots in the natural development of the human brain. However, in the digital age, where our social connections extend far beyond the geographical boundaries (界限), we easily create more connections with the help of the rising online platforms. Then, a question arises: Does the digital age rewrite the rules of social connection
A study published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking explored the effect of social media usage on the size of social circles and the closeness of relationships. The researchers found that more time spent on social media made for a larger number of online “friends,” but not a larger number of offline friends. Further, the findings were not linked to feelings of closeness towards online or offline friends.
Another study from the European Journal of Information Systems studied the link between social media usage and “social overload” — the feeling that too much of the energy for socializing is being used up by online relationships. The authors found that social media usage directly contributed to the experience of social overload, related to digital tiredness and dissatisfaction with social media.
With social media platforms rising, one’s ability to connect with people challenges the traditional concept. The brain, used to manage a limited number of relationships, now fights against the difficulties of dealing with a large number of digital connections, leading to a less attention and feeling investment (投入) in a relationship. And the online shallow connections can not develop meaningful, lasting relationships that stand the test of digital distance.
Therefore, in the digital age’s social whirlwind, instead of drowning (淹没) in a sea of weak interaction (互动), choose to engage in meaningful conversations and focus on the handful of relationships that truly fit your heart. Hug the beauty of face-to-face connections, allowing the richness of human interaction to flower beyond the digital world. By doing so, we create digital and physical spaces that truly improve our well-being.
12. Why did the author mention the traditional concept in the first paragraph
A. To tell a story. B. To develop the topic.
C. To show his sincerity. D. To give an example.
13. What can we learn from the first study
A. Online relationships were closer.
B Spending more time online improved one’s health.
C. Social media usage had no effect on one’s social circles.
D. The large online social circles didn’t mean the large number of offline friends.
14. What was the disadvantage of engaging in too many relationships
A. It resulted in one’s less attention to a relationship.
B. It caused the brain to break down and damaged the health.
C. It led to expression errors when one socialized with friends.
D. It developed shallow connections that stand the test of distance.
15. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Offline Relationships: The Source of Well-being.
B. Social Overload: Do You Have Too Many Friends
C Social Media: The Bridge of People’s Connections
D. Online Friends: The Cause of Digital Dissatisfaction.

Dad and Mom had got to go on a four-day business trip. They taught their elder son Daniel and younger daughter Jane how to feed and look after their dog, Spot, how to take good care of themselves—learning to cook if they could, or ordering pizza—with money left on the table—if they were busy, and told them to keep their rooms clean and tidy. They asked Daniel to be in charge.
On the very morning when the parents left, Mom kissed them and said to Daniel gently, “Young man, do take care of Spot and Jane.” Daniel promised, “I will, Mom.”
Too excited to fall asleep again, Daniel and Jane jumped out of bed, calling out each other to get up. Their pet dog, Spot, heard the similar voice and rushed in, with a ball in its mouth. Jane stuck(伸) her head into Daniel’s room,“Spot got up an hour earlier. Let’s walk it.” Daniel said excitedly, “I’m coming, but, Jane, don’t forget to keep your room clean and tidy.” “I will.”
They ran with the dog in the yard and threw the ball away for Spot to bring it back. They had fun playing with Spot the whole morning. Washing Spot was slow and tiring as it was the first time they had done it. Then Daniel settled down to his homework while Jane did her reading with interest.
The following day, Jane begged her brother to order pizza for lunch. Daniel agreed excitedly, “We haven’t tasted that for long and we behave ourselves, right ”After a while, he added, “We should save money, too.” Within half an hour, they treated themselves to a big pizza. However, in the afternoon, Spot looked sick, lying lazily and unwilling to move. Daniel was concerned about the dog and took it to the pet clinic immediately with Jane as their parents had done.

A. Confused. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Worried.

A To tell a story. B. To develop the topic.
C. To show his sincerity. D. To give an example.
13. What can we learn from the first study
A. Online relationships were closer.
B. Spending more time online improved one’s health.
B Social Overload: Do You Have Too Many Friends
C. Social Media: The Bridge of People’s Connections
D. Online Friends: The Cause of Digital Dissatisfaction.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. B

前面“Traditionally, the number of meaningful social relationships one can maintain is around 150. This concept finds its roots in the natural development of the human brain.(传统上,一个人能够维持的有意义的社会关系的数量约为150个。这一概念源于人类大脑的自然发育。)”提到传统社会关系的数量为大约150个,后面“However, in the digital age, where our social connections extend far beyond the geographical boundaries (界限), we easily create more connections with the help of the rising online platforms. Then, a question arises: Does the digital age rewrite the rules of social connection (然而,在数字时代,我们的社会联系远远超出了地理界限,在不断崛起的在线平台的帮助下,我们很容易建立更多的联系。那么,一个问题来了:数字时代是否改写了社会联系的规则?)”讲述了在数字时代能够建立更多关系,但也产生了这是否会改写社会联系规则的问题。由此可推测出,作者提到传统概念是为了引出接下来的主题。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“The researchers found that more time spent on social media made for a larger number of online ‘friends,’ but not a larger number of offline friends.(研究人员发现,花在社交媒体上的时间越多,网上的‘朋友’就越多,但线下的朋友却不多。)”可知,在社交媒体上花的时间越多,网上的朋友会越多,但线下的朋友却不多,由此可推测出,网上社交圈大并不意味着有许多线下朋友。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“The brain, used to manage a limited number of relationships, now fights against the difficulties of dealing with a large number of digital connections, leading to a less attention and feeling investment (投入) in a relationship.(大脑过去用来管理有限的关系,现在却在与处理大量数字联系的困难作斗争,这会导致人们对一段关系的关注和感觉投资减少。)”可知,参与太多的关系会导致对一段关系的关注减少。故选A。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“However, in the digital age, where our social connections extend far beyond the geographical boundaries (界限), we easily create more connections with the help of the rising online platforms. Then, a question arises: Does the digital age rewrite the rules of social connection

【答案】When Dad and Mom arrived a day earlier, they were amazed to find everything in a mess. Mom was angry and shouted, “Listen to me, young man—I left you in charge. We thought you would act like an adult, but look at the mess. The money for food has been used up but why does Spot still look hungry What did you do with the money we left ” Jane explained anxiously, “Mummy, Spot is sick, so we spent the rest of the money taking it to the pet clinic.”
Daniel ran into his room with tears in his eyes,“Jane, there is no need to explain and Mom won’t trust me any longer.” Comforting Mom, Dad said calmly, “There is probably a good explanation for everything.” Hearing the little daughter’s words, Mom understood that the reason why they had no time to clean the house was that they waited for Spot at the clinic all day. Mom regretted acting so angrily and was satisfied that Daniel learnt to be responsible for others. She apologized to Daniel sincerely and hugged him in her arms, saying that “you are really growing up into a young man.”
