I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school. I won the B Division long jump and was a good sprinter(短跑运动员). As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meet. Before the sports meet, I had put in a lot of hard work and dedication during the training sessions. I woke up early every morning to go for runs and did countless drills to improve my technique. My teammates and I supported and encouraged each other during training, pushing ourselves to do better and achieve our goals.
The meet lasted two days, I had no events scheduled for the first day. So I kept myself busy by watching the others compete. Large tents were provided for the young competitors on one side of the track. Despite being assigned the last tent that was furthest from the track, I made the best of the situation by decorating it with our school colours and creating a supportive atmosphere.
The next day, I was getting ready for my events. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by the 8×50m relay later in the afternoon. I thought I was a pretty good jumper, but as the competition began, I realised I was vastly outclassed. We finished our jumps, and I came in fourth place, just missing out on a medal.
That was disappointing, but I reminded myself that we still had a chance in the 8×50m relay, for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg. The race date arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a tense minute or so, I heard the starter’s gun go off. When the first runners took off, I watched nervously and excitedly as my team runners kept up with the others. As they got closer, I realised we were at least in second place.

Reading Classics, Experiencing life
Every April 23rd is the World Book Day. In order to encourage more people to read more books, all kinds of activities are held on April 23rd.
I spend most of my free time reading famous books which affect me greatly. Of all the books, I like the Long March best. From the book I can know about our history better, and I am so proud of being a Chinese Reading not only broadens my horizons, but also makes my life more colourful. With the company of books, I never feel lonely.
I hope that you will enjoy reading as much as I do.

One possible version:
My turn arrived and I took the baton(接力棒) cleanly and began my run. The air rushed past me as I moved closer to the next runner. Then disaster struck! I saw a boy run across the track into my path out of nowhere. I couldn’t get away from him fast enough. I somersaulted over him after the collision. Because I was young and agile, I was able to quickly pick myself up and continue the race. However, the collision cost us valuable time. I handed the baton to the next runner. I knew everything was lost when he ran with all his effort, but it was too late. We’d blown our chance at a medal.
As a result, I left the meet empty handed. As a result, we just assumed it was bad luck. I, for one, felt terrible for letting the team down, but what was done was done, and we had no choice but to accept it. Anyway, it had been an eventful but unsatisfying day for me. And I learned about failure and success and how to deal with them. I am grateful for this unforgettable experience.

My first marathon. It’s pouring rain, my legs were cold, and I was wishing I hadn’t been too nervous to eat a bigger breakfast. “There were tables of chocolate bars every mile at my last marathon,” Dad says.
Suddenly everyone around us starts moving. Way up ahead I see smoke from the cannon. I can’t believe we hadn’t heard it. It took ages to reach the starting line. Our marathon started.
Soon Dad started to slow down. After only a mile, I overtook everyone in sight. And Dad was way behind with his left leg cramped(抽筋).
I soon reached mile 5, and I was feeling well. I still hadn’t seen a chocolate bar anywhere. Maybe they didn’t have them! Instead, the streets were lined with fast food places. But there were lines of runners at every shop.
By mile 10, my legs felt good but I was starving. How I wish I hadn’t just had one piece of toast for breakfast! It’s raining so hard that it hurt. My hands stung from the cold. I took a power gel out of pocket and tried to open it, but my hands were so cold that they felt as if they were frozen into fists. On the balconies people yelled and waved to me. That cheered me up a bit.
Then I ran past mile 13, the halfway checkpoint. Up ahead I could see my mum and my little brother cheering for me. Hearing my name from their cheers, I felt refreshed and kept on running.
Mile 15. I saw food at last! There were tables full of bananas. I grabbed a banana and scoffed it down. Then I ripped the power gel open. My hands had come unfroze. I squeezed the packet and filled my mouth with the gel. Chocolate would taste better.
When I reached mile 20, and I didn’t want to run another inch. Every step jarred my leg.

I started walking the next mile before Dad caught up running in an awkward way. He looked exhausted, but he smiled when he saw me. We walked and jogged together, and he told me about his previous marathons. He said that it’s not about winning, but about finishing the race. I felt grateful for his company, and we encouraged each other to keep going. The last few miles were tough, but we kept pushing ourselves.
Mile 25, we could hear the crowd at the finish line. It was a deafening roar, and it gave us a burst of energy. We looked at each other and grinned. We knew we were almost there. We could see the finish line up ahead, and our hearts were beating fast. We could hear our names being called over the loudspeaker. We picked up our pace and ran towards the finish line. When we crossed it, we hugged each other tightly. We had done it! We felt a sense of accomplishment that we had never felt before.

Sara, my neighbour, and I were sitting in our yard, chatting, and frowning at the wooden house across the street.
Nobody in the neighbourhood had met these two young men there yet. The two men had long hair and beards and dressed strangely. They kept to themselves. When they came outside, they never made eye contact with anyone. “They sure don’t fit in with the neighbourhood,” Sara said, the corners of her mouth turning down as she stared at that house.
Sara said, “What about our street parties We’ve always included everyone. Should we invite them ” I sighed, “Try being nice, Sara.” Suddenly, Sara sat up straight and her eyes grew wide with curiosity when a government car pulled up before Mrs Swain’s house next door. We hurried over. Mrs Swain was recovering from cancer and lived alone. Sara and I tried to keep an eye on her.
The man from the car put a piece of paper on Mrs Swain’s door and hurriedly left. Mrs Swain looked old, thin, and very tired when she opened the door. We three looked at the paper. It read: “Someone complained your grass’ length is against city rules. Please cut it in five days, or you’ll be fined.”
It was a shame that nobody had cut her grass for her. However, Sara and I were both pregnant and our families were out these days. What was worse, we were on a tight budget, and the other families here were on vacation.
Sara and I comforted Mrs Swain, telling her we’d figure out a way. Mrs Swain blinked in confusion, “Who would complain Everyone knows that my old lawnmower is broken. And I’ve been sick too.” “It may be those two guys across the street,” Sara whispered, angrily staring at that wooden house.
Just then, a voice that seemed too gentle to be coming from the strange young man behind me said, “What is going on Is she alright ” He nodded towards Mrs Swain. Sara looked at him coldly and said, “Some guys reported her because her grass is too high.” Her eyes ran over him disapprovingly, but he didn’t seem to notice.

The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month, marking the end of the Spring Festival.
There’re a wide range of interesting activities. People get together to have a family reunion dinner, eating tangyuan, balls of sticky rice flour stuffed with different fillings. Its round shape symbolizes unity, harmony and happiness. After dinner, family and friends go out to enjoy the magnificent and dazzling lantern shows and guess riddles written on the lanterns.
It allows Chinese people to gratefully reunite with family members, which has been an integral part of Chinese culture.

The young man and his friend quickly made eye contact and nodded seriously. Then they turned and walked back towards the house. Just then, Mrs Swain’s eyes widened in surprise, and we followed her gaze. The two young men were hurrying across the street, one pushing an old lawnmower and the other carrying a weed eater. Without a word, they worked to cut Mrs Swain’s grass. In silence, we knew we’d made a big, embarrassing, and silly mistake. We regretted misunderstanding the two kind men, and just stood there awkwardly.
After they finished the work, Sara and I walked in shame to apologize for judging them. “Forgive us for being rude,” we said. They just humorously replied with a joke to get us out of our guilt. Later, Mrs Swain carried juice and homemade cookies to the tired men. Mrs Swain thanked them and offered to pay them. But one man smiled, “We’ll keep your grass cut if you keep making juice and cookies for us.” That day, we learned a lesson. Never pass judgment on people because they don’t look, dress, or sound like you. They may be much better people than you.

Mrowwwwl! The cat meowed angrily as she clawed at Jennifer’s arm, drawing a thin line of blood. Just as quickly as she struck out with her claw, the agile(灵活的) orange cat leaped back to her hiding space under Jennifer’s bed. From underneath the bed, two green eyes produced bright light, staring back out at Jennifer.
Jennifer was starting to feel discouraged in a major way. She was never the one to give up; but it had been several days like this since she adopted the cat—Darla—from the animal shelter, struggling to win over the young cat’s affection through treats and soft and gentle whispers. It was during her summer break, so she had plenty of time to keep trying to win over the animal. But it wasn’t time that was the issue—it was Jennifer’s emotions that were quickly fading.
It had been two years since Jennifer’s beloved brown tabby(斑猫)—Marlin—passed away. She could never quite get over the shock and emptiness which remained in her heart when childlike joy once thrived. Marlin had been Jennifer’s faithful friend and loving companion through all the pains and trials of growing up. After Marlin died, things were never quite the same again for Jennifer. It was the first real death to pierce Jennifer’s heart and signaled the end of her carefree childhood.
She desperately wanted Darla to love her the way Marlin had and for her to love Darla just the same; but what was Jennifer supposed to do now The cut on her arm was all she had to show for her effort. Jennifer sat on the floor, burying her face in her hands, and her body trembled as she softly began to cry.

Dear teachers and fellow students,
At present, the problem of garbage pollution is getting so serious that our campus is now being surrounded by garbage.
To solve the problem of garbage pollution, we are supposed to take some effective measures. To begin with, it’s a good idea to sort the garbage properly so that they can be treated easily and differently. Besides, we had better raise students’ awareness of protecting the environment.
In my opinion, it is everyone’s responsibility to reduce garbage pollution. Only if we work together to reduce garbage can we live in a better environment.

One possible version:
After a few minutes, Jennifer noticed a strange feeling—fur. It was Darla brushing up against her face. A wave of warmth surged over Jennifer’s heart. She raised her head and found the little cat staring into her eyes, meowing gently, as if she sensed Jennifer’s pain and came to apologize. Jennifer’s tears dried out and her heart was healed by the little creature’s company. Then, a thought suddenly came to her that Darla was not the one in need of comfort, but she was.
Jennifer then reached out her hand towards the cat. Darla, suddenly aware of the hand’s presence, moved back to eye the hand cautiously, for quite a while. Then she made an attempt to approach very slowly, and finally pushed her head against the palm of Jennifer’s hand. Jennifer responded by stroking her softly, and the cat accepted. With a good stretch Darla rested happily next to her. Jennifer was clear that it was true feelings that brought them mutual trust.
