The future is coming, and sooner than you think. These emerging technologies will change the way we live, how we look after our bodies and help us prevent a climate disaster.
E-skin
A soft e-skin could make giving and receiving hugs over the Internet a reality. It can sense the wearer’s movements and change them into electrical signals, which are picked up by another e-skin system via Bluetooth and changed into mechanical vibrations (振动) that copy the movements.
Brain reading robots
Thanks to a computer algorithm (算法) and a brain-computer interface, a brain-reading robot arm has been created by Swiss researchers. It’s especially intended for patients who can’t move their upper or lower body. It could learn users’ preference and be designed accordingly.
3D-printed food
Researchers in the US developed a novel method to 3D print cooked food. It makes a 7-ingredient cheesecake using food inks. The technology could be used to create personalized meals for everyone from professional athletes to patients with dietary conditions.
Energy storing bricks
American Researchers have turned red bricks, the cheap and widely available building material into “smart bricks” that can store energy like a battery to power up electric devices. They can be recharged hundreds of thousands of times within an hour.
1 What could be realised via E-skin technology
A. Assisting the disabled. B. Changing skin of hands.
C. Imitating human’s skin. D. Hugging a person online.
2. Which of the following technologies can be used to provide electricity

“For a long time, I thought poetry and mountain biking were complete opposites and would not go together at all,” says Mackenzle Myatt, a cyclist and writer from Canada, who just published her first poetry book, In Defense of Big Dreams, which goes around her lifelong love of mountain biking.
As long as Myatt can remember, she has been writing poetry and riding bikes. The two things were very separate sides of her — the sporty, competitive side and the part that loved books and writing, playing with language. It was only too mechanical to try to put them together until Myatt took ownership of her training and started digging into the mental and emotional side of sport. That’s when it really clicks with poetry.
Mountain bikers talk about the idea of flow quite a lot. During racing, the goal is to be able to achieve flow state and be super smooth as everything is happening automatically without thinking. The feeling of inspiration in writing is similar to the flow state on a mountain bike.
The flow can bring a sense of joy, which can then turn into a positive feedback loop between Myatt’s pursuits. “When I feel joy, I want to write about it now. But also, if I’m writing about joy, it encourages me to notice joy more often in daily tasks or riding bikes.” Myatt says.
In a sense, Myatt’s new book marks a successful new connection between the bike and the poetry, which not only runs throughout the book’s pages, but throughout her life, too. “The book is designed to inspire girls in sport and in life, but I really think the messages are universal and I hope that everyone can enjoy this book and act on their potential.”
4. What do we know about Myatt’s book In Defense of Big Dreams
A. It was a big success. B. It was written for riders.
C. It describes Myatt’s writing life. D. It combines Myatt’s two favorites.
5. How does the flow state benefit Myatt’s writing
A. It attracts more readers. B. It simplifies writing task.
C It pushes her daily practice. D. It forms a positive cycle of joy.
6. What is probably the best title
A. From a Cyclist to a Poet B. The Goal of Success: Flow State
C. Flow on the Bike, Flow on the Page D. A Canadian Bestseller Written by an Athlete
根据文章第二段“As long as Myatt can remember, she has been writing poetry and riding bikes. The two things were very separate sides of her — the sporty, competitive side and the part that loved books and writing, playing with language.(从Myatt记事起,她就一直在写诗和骑自行车。这是她的两个截然不同的方面——爱运动、好胜的一面和喜欢读书、写作、玩弄语言的一面)”可知,Myatt在In Defense of Big Dreams一书中结合了自己的两个最爱。
根据文章倒数第二段“The flow can bring a sense of joy, which can then turn into a positive feedback loop between Myatt’s pursuits. “When I feel joy, I want to write about it now. But also, if I’m writing about joy, it encourages me to notice joy more often in daily tasks or riding bikes.” Myatt says.(这种流动可以带来一种喜悦感,然后将其转化为Myatt追求之间的积极反馈循环。“当我感到快乐时,我现在就想把它写下来。而且,如果我写关于快乐的东西,它会鼓励我在日常工作或骑自行车时更多地注意到快乐。”Myatt说)”可知,流动形态形成了一个快乐的正向循环。故选D。
【6题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段““For a long time, I thought poetry and mountain biking were complete opposites and would not go together at all,” says Mackenzle Myatt, a cyclist and writer from Canada, who just published her first poetry book, In Defense of Big Dreams, which goes around her lifelong love of mountain biking.(“很长一段时间,我认为诗歌和山地自行车是完全对立的,根本不可能在一起,”加拿大自行车手兼作家Mackenzle Myatt说,她刚刚出版了她的第一本诗歌书In Defense of Big Dreams,这本书围绕着她对山地自行车的毕生热爱)”和最后一段“In a sense, Myatt’s new book marks a successful new connection between the bike and the poetry, which not only runs throughout the book’s pages, but throughout her life, too.(从某种意义上说,Myatt的新书标志着自行车和诗歌之间成功的新联系,这不仅贯穿全书,也贯穿她的生活)”可知,文章主要讲述了加拿大自行车手兼作家Mackenzle Myatt最近出版了她的第一本诗集 Flow on the Bike, Flow on the Page(自行车上的流动,页面上的流动)为最好的标题。故选C。

In 2015, inspiration struck Jennifer Lee like an apple from Newton’s tree. In her case, though, it was a dumpling.
Lee and her friend Yiying Lu were texting about upcoming dinner plans. Lee sent over a picture of dumplings, and Lu turned to her phone’s emoji keyboard for a dumpling emoji. But none existed. For most people, this kind of omission would only bring annoyance. For them, big actions.
Within hours, Lu, a graphic designer, created her own picture of a dumpling and sent it to Lee. And Lee found the emoji-ruling organization — the Unicode Consortium (UC), which sets the standard text and emoji in nearly all the world’s writing systems. Then, Lee paid $75 for an individual membership and attended its technical meetings. The committee were happy to see there were outsiders who cared about the process. Before the committee, Lee presented her proposal for the dumpling emoji with more than 1,000 words, explaining the necessity of adding a dumpling emoji.
Finally in February 2016, Lee and Lu received approval for their beloved dumpling emoji. The committee were so impressed that they asked Lu to help design three other images of emoji: the takeout box, chopsticks and the fortune cookie. For them, it sparked a lifelong passion. Later, they co-founded Emojination, a grassroots group with the motto “Emoji for the people, by the people”. It advocates for more inclusive and representative emoji.
In the world of emoji, nothing gets through without initiative. “Clearly it matters, because the world cares so much. It’s a worldwide explosive passion for the usage of emoji that brings them to phones,” Lee said.
7. Why is Newton’s apple mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To show the difficulty of creating new things.
B. To prove the proverb “Great minds think alike”.
C. To illustrate the inspirations for Lee’s emoji vividly.
D. To indicate the importance of the following discovery.
8. What does the underlined word “omission” probably mean in paragraph 2
A. Response. B. Absence. C. Pictures. D. Existence.
9. How did Lee and Lu get their beloved emoji approved
A. They set standards for it. B. They worked for the UC.
C. They wrote something about dumplings. D. They persuaded the committee with a proposal.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The purposes of using emojis. B. The significance of Emojination.
C. Lee and Lu’s follow-up success. D. The popularity of the dumpling emoji.
C 8. B 9. D 10. C

根据第一段中“In 2015, inspiration struck Jennifer Lee like an apple from Newton’s tree. In her case, though, it was a dumpling. (2015年,灵感就像牛顿树上的苹果一样击中了珍妮佛·李。不过,击中她的是饺子)”可知,此处用苹果击中牛顿让他产生了伟大的灵感,来类比饺子击中珍妮佛·李让她产生了灵感,很生动鲜活。由此可知,提到牛顿的苹果是为了生动地说明李的表情符号的灵感。故选C项。
【8题详解】
词义猜测题。根据画线词的上文“Lee sent over a picture of dumplings, and Lu turned to her phone’s emoji keyboard for a dumpling emoji. But none existed. (李发来了一张饺子的图片,陆在手机的表情键盘上想输入一个饺子的表情。但这些都不存在)”和下文“would only bring annoyance (只会带来烦恼)”可推知,此处指没有找到饺子的表情符号会让人烦恼,即“缺失,遗漏”这种表情符号,画线词意思应该与absence“没有,缺乏”相近。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Before the committee, Lee presented her proposal for the dumpling emoji with more than 1,000 words, explaining the necessity of adding a dumpling emoji. (在组委会面前,李用1000多字的篇幅介绍了饺子表情包的设计方案,说明了添加饺子表情包的必要性)”可知,两人用一项提议说服了组委会,让她们的表情符号得到批准。故选D项。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Finally in February 2016, Lee and Lu received approval for their beloved dumpling emoji.

He was about to sit down when Steven put his foot on the chair. “This seat is taken,” he said. “Sit with the girls.” The others laughed loudly. Brady lowered his head and walked away.
After school, Brady sat alone on the school bus. I felt sorry for him. I thought about sitting with him, but I didn’t want to be made fun of. I remembered how everyone laughed at me when I, a boy, knitted a scarf for my favourite teacher. I didn’t like being laughed at, so I gave up knitting.
But what would have happened if I’d stood up for myself An overwhelming sense of regret and guilt was lingering in my mind all night. So, I was determined to stand by Brady.
The next day, we had gym class. The coach announced that we would have a basketball game and Steven and I were the captains of the two sides. Steven lowered his head and walked to Brady. This time he swallowed his pride and patted Brady on the shoulder. “Not bad! Bro!
C. It pushes her daily practice. D. It forms a positive cycle of joy.
6. What is probably the best title
A. From a Cyclist to a Poet B. The Goal of Success: Flow State
C. Flow on the Bike, Flow on the Page D. A Canadian Bestseller Written by an Athlete
C
8 What does the underlined word “omission” probably mean in paragraph 2
A. Response. B. Absence. C. Pictures. D. Existence.
