Katya Echazarreta recently made history as the first Mexican-born American woman and one of the youngest women ever to fly to space—a lifelong dream she was able to accomplish at only 26 years old.
On June 4, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket carried its fifth group of passengers to the edge of space and Katya got an opportunity to apply for one of the six seats through a nonprofit called Space for Humanity. The previous flights had been all filled to capacity.
The organization’s goal is to send passengers to space and allow them to experience the “overview effect”, a phenomenon astronauts have described after looking down at the Earth from the outside. “They recognize that, as humans, our commonalities far outweigh our differences,” Space for Humanity says on its website.
Katya, an electrical engineer originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, was selected for the trip from a pool of 7,000 applicants from more than 100 countries based on her outstanding achievements in the space industry, and this met their requirement—sending “exceptional leaders” to experience. After going through training, she and her five fellow passengers took off from Blue Origin’s launch facility in West Texas. The spacecraft took them 62 miles above the Earth’s surface, giving them a few minutes of weightlessness before a descent (下降) back to a parachute landing.
“The trip up was the most fascinating experience because a lot of us are used to traveling horizontally. But when you’ re in a rocket, you’ re going up vertically (垂直地) and that feels very strange,” Echazarreta said. “Seeing the Earth from the outside, I feel it really puts things into perspective. Everything that we’ve ever experienced—all of your problems, and all of your obstacles—and everything that feels like the end of the world to us sometimes, are all there. It feels so big to us, and yet it’s not, because I just left in a matter of minutes.”
4. What can we know about Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket
A. It has made history in space exploration. B. It only provides seats for the young.
C. It helps women to realize their dream. D. It has flown about 30 passengers to space.
5. What does Space for Humanity aim to do
A. Promote the development of space industry.
B. Send technology pioneers to live in space.
C. Let the passengers feel the overview effect.
D. Describe the phenomenon astronauts experience.
6. What may be one of the standards of the participants
A. Being wise. B. Being young.
C. Being brave. D. Being distinguished.
7. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Katya’s insight into the space trip. B. Katya’s trip that goes up vertically.
C. All the challenges facing Katya. D. Katya’s explanation for her motivation.

Last September, several hundred tomato lovers gathered on a sunny, breezy day in Portland, Ore. for Tomato Fest. Agricultural researcher Matt Davis was handing out samples of experimental tomatoes which were dry-farmed.
Dry-farming, a form of agriculture that doesn’t require irrigation, has roots stretching back millennia. But in the 20th century, the practice largely fell out of widespread use. Today, however, farmers are once again experimenting with dry farming as they struggle with water shortages, which are being exacerbated by rising temperatures and more frequent and intense droughts linked to climate change.
It’s a common misconception that dry farming means growing plants without water. Instead, dry-farmed plants take up moisture stored in the ground rather than sprinkled (洒) from above. Thus, sites must generally receive more than 50 centimeters of annual precipitation (降水量) to create moisture in the soil, and the soil must be composed of fine grains that help preserve that water over time.
Dry-farming won’t solve all of agriculture’s woes, but it offers a way forward. Farmers have noticed that dry-farmed plots contain only about a fifth of the weeds that grow in irrigated plots. Not having to pull up as many weeds can translate into labor savings. Coupled with not having to manage irrigation facilities, dry-farming can simplify a growing operation.
In 2016 and 2017, Alex Stone and Jennifer Wetzel from Oregon State University grew different varieties of winter squash in Corvallis. The pair irrigated some vegetable fields and dry-farmed others. After harvesting the squash and leaving them in storage for four months, they found that about 80% of the roughly 1,250 dry-farmed winter squash were still marketable while the number dropped to 50% out of the roughly 1,150 irrigated winter squash.
“You get to really learn what the environment gives you, and you learn to respond accordingly.” Michael Johnson, a specialist at the University of Arizona says, “A relationship develops between the cropping system and the farmer. It’s a beautiful thing that needs to be cherished.”
8. What does the underlined word “exacerbated” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Highlighted. B. Worsened. C. Relieved. D. Improved.
9. What can we know about dry-farming
A. It helps grow plants without water.
B. It enjoyed great popularity in the 20th century.
C. It has certain requirements for the composition of soil.
D. It is an effective method to address environmental problems.
10. What did Stone and Wetzel discover about dry-farming in their experiment
A. Its produce contains less water. B. Its overall yields tend to be higher.
C. It makes the growing process simpler. D. It tends to yield longer-preserved produce.
11. What is Johnson’s attitude towards dry farming
A. Conservative. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Skeptical.
D
“Many people consider cats to be a largely nonsocial species,” Daniel Mills, a veterinary behaviorist at the University of Lincoln, tells Science. “There is clearly a lot going on that we are not aware of.”
To collect data on these furry subjects, researcher Lauren Scott of the University of Kansas Medical Center frequented a cat café located in Los Angeles for about a year and recorded videos of interactions between 53 cats. In total, Scott gathered 194 minutes of feline (猫科的) films that contained 186 interactions. With the help of her co-author, evolutionary psychologist Brittany N. Florkiewicz, she analyzed the cats’ facial signals. The pair discovered 276 expressions made up of a combination of 26 facial movements, including shifts in ear position, blinks, nose licks and whisker (胡须) and mouth movements. Of all expressions, about 45 percent or 126 were categorized as friendly, 37 percent were aggressive and 18 percent were ambiguous.
“These findings show it is good to look at a cat’s ears, eyes and whiskers to understand if they are feeling friendly,” Florkiewicz tells. “Their mouth provides a lot of information about whether a cat fight is likely. People may think that cats’ facial expressions are all about warning other cats and people off, but this shows just how social and tolerant pet cats can actually be.” The team also identified a “common play face” among cats, which was characterized by a dropped jaw and drawn back corners of the mouth.
Still, the scientists detected some patterns: Cats tended to move their ears and whiskers toward one another during friendly interactions and away during unfriendly ones. When the animals are aggressive, they often shrink their pupils (瞳孔) and flatten their ears. Cats display negative emotions with flattened ears and curled-back whiskers.
The new study could be used to help humans adopting cats find one that’s more likely to get along with existing pets, or it could help pet owners understand their feline companions better, Florkiewicz tells Science.
12. What did Lauren Scott do to collect data about cats’ facial expressions
A. She observed cats in their natural habitat.
B. She shot videos of cats’ interaction at a cat café.
C. She conducted experiments in a laboratory setting.
D She interviewed cat owners about their pets’ behaviour.
13. If cats plan to make an attack, they will ________.
A. move its ears and whiskers forward
B. narrow its pupils and flatten its ears
C. close its ears and twist its whiskers
D. lower its jaw and draw back the corners of the mouth
14. What can we learn from the passage
A. Cats’ nonsocial nature is well confirmed.
B. Cats’ facial expressions are usually offensive.
C. Cats’ expression study will assist pet adopters.
D. Cats’ expressions won’t signal their negative emotions.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Friendliness and Aggression of Cats
B. The Social Nature of Cats
C. Facial Signals and Interactions of Cats
D. The Common Behaviour of Cats

How to Organize Your Digital Files
Searching for a file on your computer is a whole lot easier than digging through a pile of papers, yet it’s far from being a perfect system. Lately, it’s been hit-or-miss for me. ____16____ I hope some of these tips will help you.
Use “resources”, “in progress”, “final”, and “scrap” folders for projects.
There are plenty of ways to title your subfolders for projects, but one of the most intuitive(使用简便的) is to have folders for stages of your project. ____17____
The “resources” folder is for things like images, documents, and other items that are needed to complete your project. ____18____“Final,” as you might imagine, is for the project files once the project has been approved and is done. “Scrap” is for anything you want to save from the project that doesn’t belong in the “final” folder.
____19____
It’s near impossible to find a photo quickly when you have thousands of photos all named something like “20211108_0978234.jpg.” So for photos I like to have a date structure and folders for key events or categories, such as: 2021 >01 (for the month)>2021-01 Mom and Dad 50 Anniversary LA. This way, you can either browse your photos by year and month or search for folders that include “Mom”, “Dad”, “Anniversary”, or “LA.”
Use tags.
In addition to creating a folder structure that works for you, consider tagging files. ____20____ Say, for example, you want to see all of your photos for all of your holiday celebrations. You can set up a tag for “holidays.” And then to narrow down the results, you can search using the tag.
A. With tags, you can connect multiple files across folders.
B. For photos, use a date structure and keywords for your folders.
C. This way, you can always know which is the final project file to grab.
D. The standards will keep files organized and make them easier on the eye.
E. “In progress” is for the current working version or versions of the project.
F. To find files more efficiently, I’ve been rearranging my digital filing system.
G. Move your photos to a more specific folder or back them up on an external storage device.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My mother believed in using things up. Last year, our cornfield had a bad harvest because birds feasted on the crops. It was probably then that Mom’s frugality(节俭) became even more extraordinary. She began keeping everything that seemed useless in the attic(阁楼)—worn-out clothes, old sheets, broken umbrellas, and some other old items. Mom’s favorite saying was “waste not, want not”. My brother Josh and I weren’t sure what that meant until the “Affair of the Scarecrow(稻草人)”, which, as it later became known, left a lasting impression on us.
The story began with a pretty hat that Mom received as a gift to protect her from the sun. However, Josh and I could see that Mom’s frugal nature and fashion sense were in battle. Mom really didn’t want to get rid of the hat—it was new and had a lot of use left in it—but neither could she stand wearing it. She tried to take off the fancy decorations, but they were stuck on tight. She’d have to find some other solution.
Josh and I watched as Mom headed upstairs to the attic with the hat. “Waste not, want not,” she called back down. We heard boxes being moved around. Moments later, Mom leaned out, holding a flour bag full of straw, and with a mysterious smile, she placed the hat on it.
“What is that for ” I asked, confused. “A scarecrow!” Mom exclaimed. “But not a good one yet. It needs a strong body to stand firm in the field,” she said with a frown. “And it doesn’t look scary enough,” Josh remarked. I had to admit that Josh, though younger than I was, could sometimes be more imaginative. Josh and I turned to each other, searching for a good idea. Soon enough, Josh’s eyes lit up with inspiration.

A Conservative.

D. She interviewed cat owners about their pets’ behaviour.

____19____
It’s near impossible to find a photo quickly when you have thousands of photos all named something like “20211108_0978234.jpg.” So for photos, I like to have a date structure and folders for key events or categories, such as: 2021 >01 (for the month)>2021-01 Mom and Dad 50 Anniversary LA.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
“Come with me!” Josh called out.

Paragraph 2:
In the days that followed, the scarecrow stood tall.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “Come with me!” Josh called out. The next instant, he raced upstairs with lightning speed. I hurried to follow him into the attic, where we began a thorough search. Mom was amused by our excitement when we found the broken umbrellas and used them as the backbone of the Scarecrow. After that, we sorted out some old sheets and tied them on. The scarecrow now looked even scarier. We dragged our creation to the cornfield and planted it firmly in the mud, our hearts full of hope.
In the days that followed, the scarecrow stood tall. Serving as a silent guardian, it successfully scared the birds away. Under its watchful eyes, our cornfield flourished this year. To our amazement, Mom’s useless things from the attic had come together to create something extraordinary. As we enjoyed a good harvest, her favorite saying, “waste not, want not”, echoed in our hearts. The “Affair of the Scarecrow” has taught us the value of creatively transforming seemingly useless items into treasure, making us aware that frugality is a good quality after all.
